From the Publisher.......2005-11-22
"Treasures of Taliesin presents 106 drawings of 77 Frank Lloyd Wright buildings that were never built--buildings that Wright believed were his most interesting works. This revised, updated, an[d] newly designed edition includes new text from Bruce Pfeiffer, Director of Archives at The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Pfeiffer draws on his long association with Wright to describe the circumstances surrounding the germination of each project, characterizes the personalities involved, and explains why the work was not completed. The stories include political intrigue and assassination, as well as providing glimpses of personalities such as Mike Todd, and Ayn Rand, and a poignant recollection of Marilyn Monroe, who wanted an entire floor of her planned home with Arthur Miller for their children. There is even a residence for a mysterious client whose identity was known only to Wright.
"In his careful selection of projects, Pfeiffer has created a visual history of Wright's accomplishments over a career that stretched from 1895 to 1959. Treasures of Taliesin ranges in scope from the minutely detailed--Wright's admonition to Franklin Watkins to "use cadmium plated screws with a electrical screwdriver" to secure the cypress siding of his studio-residence--to the uniquely extravagant: a description of the 26-foot drawing for the Mile High Building, exhibited in 1956 to the astonished world. This collection of drawings is both a feast and a fascinating overview of Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural genius.
"164 pages, 106 color reproductions, 13 x 10". Casebound book with dust jacket. ISBN: 0-7649-1041-8."--© Pomegranate

Book Description
Frank Lloyd Wright believed that his unbuilt designs were the most interesting of his works. Here are 106 color plates of his drawings for 76 unexecuted designs. Twenty-nine of the drawings have never been published.
Pfeiffer has created a visual history of the development of Wright’s work that extends in time from 1895 to 1959
and in architectural interest from his admonition to Franklin Watkins to “use cadmium plated screws with an electrical screwdriver” to secure the cypress siding of his studio-residence to a description of the 26-foot drawing for The Mile High Building that was exhibited on September 17, 1956.
Wright argued then that “This is the future of the tall building in the American city. Level Manhattan to one large green, like Central Park, and erect a few of these well spaced apart and you have the congregation desired by city work and city life, but surrounded with trees, fields, parks and streams.”
Pfeiffer draws on his long association with Wright to describe the circumstances surrounding the germination of each project, characterize the personalities involved, and explain what went wrong and why. The stories include political intrigue and assassination, as well as intimate glimpses of personalities such as Mike Todd and Ayn Rand, and a poignant recollection of Marilyn Monroe, who wanted an entire floor of her planned home with Arthur Miller for their children. There is even a residence for a mysterious client whose identity was known only by Wright.

Great for 3D designers.......2005-06-04
While viewing this book I saw great opportunity for modelling 3D projects. There are numerous futuristic styles that he covers in this book. But of course remember modellers, give credit to the creator.

LUSCIOUS BOOK.......2007-04-22
An absolute must for the naturalist and artist both. Comprehensive descriptions tell you everything germane about each of dozens of those "weeds" you think you know and will learn to love. The full color full page illustrations of every single plant are knockouts!
What a gorgeous book!.......2000-08-17
Having been totally enthralled by an exhibit of Anna Vojtech's paintings at an art gallery I visited back east, I was excited to learn that she had published this book of reproductions of her work. My husband is an amateur naturalist, and when I told him about the book he was eager to see it because of Ghillean Prance, a famous botanist and extremely interesting writer. So we ordered it.
This book is amazing! The reproductions are so beautiful and rich, and a few of the plants are portrayed in more than one season, so you can see the changes they go through as the seasons progress. The colors are perfect and you practically feel like you're sitting there in the woods with the artist while she paints a lily or trillium. The detail of the paintings (and even more so when you see them in person in a gallery!) is remarkable, intricate, highly skilled -- she's just a really gifted watercolor artist!
Ghillean Prance writes just the sort of text that makes these pictures feel so alive. He discusses some cultural or medicinal uses of the plants, or some folklore behind them, or something else really interesting that comes as a revelation. Dr. Prance is so knowledgable, he makes me want to become a naturalist.
Highly recommended for naturalists, gardeners, art enthusiasts, people interested in plant folklore, and anyone who just enjoys flowers.

Almost everyone is familiar with Korda's intense 1960 portrait of Che Guevara, an image that has come to represent revolution itself. But what happened in Cuba after that famous photograph? A great deal, as evidenced by the moving photographs in both this book and its accompanying exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. They flow around contemporary themes such as the everyday hero, collective memory, and siting the self, marking Cuba as both the mythical place in Wim Wenders's Buena Vista Social Club and a surreal place where four decades seem to overlap. Because most of these striking photographs are black and white, a more expensively printed book would have done them more justice--but the cover price is low, so accessibility seems to have won in this case. Regardless, anyone interested in Cuban culture or Latin American photography would find this book a great resource. --Juliette Cezzar

Survey of Contemporary Cuban Photography........2002-01-27
The book is a catalogue for the important exhibition of Cuban photography, "Shifting Tides: Cuban Photography After the Revolution," which was organized by Tim B. Wride of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Focusing on just three generations of photographers, starting just after the triumph of the 1959 Revolution, it highlights the important work of photographers in and out of Cuba such as Jose A. Figueroa, Maria Eugenia Haya (Marucha), Rogelio Lopez Marin (Gory) and Marta Maria Perez Bravo.
The essay by Cristina Vives, an independent curator in Havana and an art historian, offers a brief history and indeed a very personal close-up of Cuban photography and its importance not as a tool of a socialist state or society but as fine art. As an "insider", (she is married to the photographer Jose A. Figueroa), she has been both privileged and burdened with writing an elegant essay that although brief, is both concise and informative. The reader emerges with a clearer understanding of how the present "state of affairs" in Cuban contemporary photography came to be. The press was a close ally of the medium because of political and social reasons in the early stages of the Revolution but, nevertheless provided both work and a showcase for the talents of many. In addition, Ms. Vives examines the state of photography before this historical reality of that continues to be, the Cuban Revolution.
Curator Wride, in a brief telephone conversation to this writer, said the idea of an exhibition as this was four years in the making. The exhibition and book that accompanies it, have been worth waiting for.

An exciting look at Cuban photography.......2001-06-25
As an American photographer who photographs in Cuba I found this book to be both visually exciting and intellectually stimulating. The more recent photographs are complex and sophisticated. The preface by Wim Wenders was especially moving. Wenders summed up my personal feelings about this tiny neighbor in a poetic and passionate way. This book has convinced me to travel to see the exhibition in person.
PHOTOGRAPHS THAT SPEAK A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE.......2001-05-04
Explaining his concept for this absorbing collection of black and white photographs, Tim B. Wride, author and Los Angeles County Museum of Art Associate Curator of Photography, said "Shifting Tides" is intended to "expand the common perception of what Cuban photography is generally thought to be. That is, black-and-white, documentary reportage with a hint of magic realism, and replete with iconic images of Che and Fidel."
Rather, Wide continues, there "is the broad range and inventive nature of work, both conceptual and visual, that has been and continues to be done on the island. The work is expressive, sophisticated, and firmly grounded in an international art dialogue."
Covering 40 years of Cuban photography, the work is expressive, indeed. The volume may be roughly divided into three sections, one celebrating the work of such photographers as Enrique de la Uz, Ivan Canas and Jose Alberto Figueroa, who focused on the common man, workers, street scenes, and the marked changes found on the island.
Another section emphasizes everyday life after the revolution, and a third area is distinctly different as these artists never lived in a pre-Castro Cuba.
While grounded in Cuba, of course, all of these images speak a universal tongue, which is high praise for the artists who created them.

Book Description
A valuable set of reflections, anecdotes, and pure fund raising wisdom from one of the great pioneers in the development field.
--Michael O'Neill, professor and director, Institute for Nonprofit Organization Management, University of San Francisco
For over forty-five years, Henry Rosso has worked to enhance and advance the work and lives of professional fund raisers the world over. He has been recognized as the person who has most shaped present fund raising practice and theory. In this book of thoughtful essays, he explores a variety of topics including leadership, stewardship, the art of asking, building relationships, and more--all in a refreshing writing style that makes fund raising human and friAndly.
Customer Reviews:
A superb introduction.......2002-01-22
An excellent introduction to fund raising; without doubt the best available. Rosso is clear and concise in this brief and easily digested text. This is not a "how to" book. You will not learn the details of running a capital campaign or conducting prospect research. Rather, Rosso provides an overview of the elements of fund raising. The major laws of fund raising science are presented along with the less well defined knowledge areas of fund raising art. He discusses topics including sequential solicitation, the donor data base, and using a gift range chart. But also communicated are the human elements which are essential to success in this field. The account is highly personal, drawing on years of practical experience. The recollections are well chosen and thoughtfully integrated into the text. Although this book will have most value for those with little or no prior knowledge of its subject, I suspect that even the experienced fund raiser will obtain benefit from its reading.

Profit from Experience: The National Semiconductor Story of Transformation Management
by Gil Amelio
I have read this wonderful book around the mid-nineties. In a nut shell, it contains a first-hand account of "people leadership" as well as "business leadership" inside an industry giant, within the context of a corporate transformation that eventually achieved profitability growth, enthusiastic employees & happy customers.
I remember I had bought it because of my personal interest in strategic visioning. Also, I was attracted by a few of the tools as outlined in the book:
- 6 core issues critical to business success;
- 10 personal attributes to strive for;
- 6 steps to empowerment;
- attributes to look for when selecting, developing & keeping people;
The most interesting parts of the book are where the authors tell the reader how to create a powerful vision, chart out a course with a viable action plan, heighten commitment in the ranks (especially their desire to contribute), establish operational excellence as the standard by developing measurable metrics & benchmarks for success, & make the customer the best friend.
I remember I was transfixed for a while by a particular passage, on page 22, under the paragraph heading of 'Visualising the Dream.' Here the authors relates how they had recognised that a twenty-two page white paper, as part of the preamble to the Leading Change process, was too long for people to grasp readily. They then brought in David Sibbet of Grove Consultants. Sibbet & his team translated the Leading Change sessions (first for top-level managers throughout the world & subsequently moving down throughout the organisation) into creative visual rendering - sort of an artistic conception of the corporate vision. Some seven hundred people had participated. This eventually evolved into a single-page symbolic represention in the form of 'Spaceship National Semi-Conductor' vision poster. In reality, it had captured the thoughts & aspirations of all the employees within the industry giant.
Every employee in the organisation had a miniature copy of the vision poster to signify his/her contribution & commitment to the corporate vision. That's empowerment, at & across all levels!
The book did not fail at all in my expectations of the book. I have enjoyed it very much - & it's fun to read, too. Besides the strategic visioning, understanding the six critical business issues & empowerment aspects, I feel the personal attributes to strive for, as outlined by the author, are also real gems & are worth reproducing here, for the benefit of readers:
- be a role model, not a victim;
- know yourself;
- strive for balance;
- know how to deal with ambiguity;
- get out of your comfort zone;
- understand how to steadily raise the bar;
- pursue lifelong learning;
- be a good communicator;
- practise situational leadership;
- acknowledge mistakes & correct them quickly;
To conclude this review, this book, packed with real-life examples & personal anecdotes, is an excellent field guide to corporate transformation. It offers remarkable lessons & practical insights on People Leadership as well as Business Leadership.
[An inspiring companion to go with this book is Jim Clemmer's 'Pathways to Performance: A Guide to Transformin Yourself, Your Team & Your Organisation.']
Hard-hitting and Spot-on!.......2006-01-27
I was amazed that there are no reviews on this book. Perhaps it's because it was written so long ago and appears dated.
Make no mistake though that the steps that are in the book are timeless.
This is a book that anyone at any level can apply in day-to-day situations.
I highly recommend this book to everyone. It's not 'faddish' but is truly 'nuts-and-bolts'. If you want to know how to get things done, this book will be most helpful.
