This is a great book, full of useful advice on how to use art materials safely. Contains many pictures of artists and their solutions to the problem of using sometimes toxic materials in their personal studio space. Easy to understand and well organized, this book is good to keep as a reference manual, and many schools have it on their required reading list.

A glimpse into mental illness.......2005-02-15

If you are looking for a book from which to gleen ideas, this is not it. If you had written this book and handed it to a psychiatrist, he/she would ask if you had stopped taking your meds. I was grossly misled by the accompanying glorious reviews, thinking I was actually purchasing a useful architecture book. This is a book half filled with Adam Kalkin's work and half filled with the child-like scribblings, insane ramblings, and pornographic "art" of an obviously mentally ill person. Not genius, not deep or insightful, just insane. If you are a fan of Adam Kalkin's work as I am, but don't want the useless pages, you should buy PreFab Modern. It contains all of his important work with much larger and better photographs. Unless you are incredibly eccentric, this is a book you would literally be embarassed to show your friends and family. A waste of money.

Semantic Incontinence.......2004-06-27

"Semantic incontinence" is a term from the list of '100 Comments on Architecture and Hygiene' at the conclusion of this book by Adam Kalkin, and I feel that this two word turn of phrase encapsulates the narrative of this book as well as any other. The book is extremely difficult, no, impossible, to categorize. It is essentially a photographic primer on the stark, almost anarchist, ultra-modern architectural works of Kalkin. I am a great fan of contemporary and industrial architecture, but I have never seen it taken to this level before.

Interspersed with the architectural forays are hand drawn, child-like sketches of concepts that are far beyond the boundaries of normal architecture books. In particular, the "Sphincter of Loneliness" on p. 94 caught my attention, as did the test on p. 59, which features such questions as these:

Diaper is to Sari as:
a) urbanism is to classicism
b) rain is to fog
c) fez is to spanking

Who was the least well known:
a) Plotinus
b) Elvis
c) The Nancy Drew Series

Essay: Write twenty words or less on the following topic
Clinton: Sage or Bedwetter?

Clearly this is no ordinary architect. While some of his works are a bit too industrial even for my tastes, you will be hard pressed to find a more unusual, stimulating, weird, or fun book on contemporary architecture.

Unspeakable.......2003-12-12

Wear shades! What you see in Adam Kalkin's hyperpolished mirror might scare you. Aphasic and perverse, Kalkin throws knife-edged arcs into the sky. This is what you get when geometry sleeps with poetry. Sniff the pictures and then eat the book to complete the synesthetic experience.

...because you cannot imagine what is in it; I find it remarkable that anyone could. I bought this book mainly based on the cover picture, because I like looking at innovative design. I did not expect the combination of (1) delightful, radically imaginative, yet practical architecture / interior design with (2) insightfully sardonic Monty Pythonesque, Warren Zevonish humor. The blend, throughout, is liberating. There are many excellent photos as well as professional and kid-like drawings. You will feel admiration. You will laugh. You will want a house made of shipping containers. You will want to call the number that shoots the gun that misses the ...(buy book to find out what). The book includes plans and photos of the author's art exhibits. It will make you want to sit down with pencil and paper to design! Nothing could have prepared me to appreciate this book except all the crap I've been exposed to in the last 40 years that is supposed to be penetrating, funny, and original in art and building. It is what you really want on your coffee or bedside table. You'll feel badly if your dogs rip it up. It is not an imitation. It will damage that dead stuff that hangs out in your CNS.

A venal and combustible mix of troglodytic patois. Perfect bathroom reading; small, but raw enough to inflate your bowels with a new sense of self. You will laugh, sweat and vascillate between repulsion and enlightenment. A perfect gift for someone you might befriend.

This volume deals with the medical and paramedical topics, compiled from the works of Flavius Josephus, the Jewish historian who lived in the first century C.E. in Judea, and later in Rome. The study of medicine from ancient Jewish sources has focused on the Bible and the Talmud, the content of which is primarily theological and cultural. The present work reveals two main trends. Josephus' paraphrase of the Biblical narrative introduced a number of additions and/or discrepancies which bear on medicine. Moreover, his account of the Jewish War and of contemporary political events includes many details related to medicine and hygiene. This book deals with physicians and healers, diseases and epidemics, with surgery, psychiatry and psychology, and with therapeutics. The work concludes with a discussion of medical metaphors and with a sequence of detailed treatments of topics including suicide, the Essenes and King Herod. This book is way out dated (1989). If you are looking for specific up to date information to open an account it's a waste of your time and money. If you want general information about the banking system then it's worth the read.

In 1988, Dr. Peter Drucker wrote an influential article, "The Coming of the New Organization," in which he argued that companies would in the future become flatter organizationally to capture the potential of knowledge workers. One model, he opined, was the symphony orchestra where the conductor adds vision, but must evoke the best performance from her or his independent players.

Leadership Ensemble looks beyond Dr. Drucker's vision, to the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra's practices in operating without a conductor! The result is a "dynamic equilibrium" where everyone takes turns playing leadership roles and is encouraged to provide the kinds of ideas that only conductors normally propose. Interestingly, the Orpheus group is inspired to make great music . . . along the lines of what the collaboration of chamber groups has always done. If they thought that having a conductor would help, they would get a conductor. Instead, they seem to have harnessed many dimensions of the talents of all 27 musicians in the group. Their intent is to evolve further in this direction, so the book represents the group at a point in time, rather than at a destination.

The usual orchestra is run like a dukedom, with the conductor in charge. Few opinions are asked for and even fewer are brooked. In fact, independent surveys show that musicians in orchestras generally have very poor job satisfaction. The authors joke that "every dictator aspires to be a conductor" because a conductor's power is so absolute.

The best part of this book involves describing the way the orchestra operates to select a repertoire, decide how to perform a piece, determine who will play what parts, and handle differences of opinion. There are many other interesting sections about how the musicians have expanded their roles to get into more areas of management and recently (1998) were added to the board of trustees. The processes involved reminded me a lot of what jazz musicians do more informally, and improvisational actors do on the spur of the moment. The remarkable thing is that great planning is captured by the orchestra, without getting bogged down in spending too much time preparing. Their processes are very complex and effective, and depend on thoughtful and timely action by everyone involved. I would love to see a DVD version of this book that involved showing them at work in preparing pieces and handling other important tasks.

The key principles of their success are boiled down into 8 principles. These concepts are elaborated with a few examples from other organizations (mostly profit-making companies), five steps for implementation, and problems to look out for in implementation. Although this material is good, I would have preferred to have read more about Orpheus itself instead.

A key caution that I have about the advice here is that the organizations using these principles were either founded upon them, or have been using them extensively for a long time. I'm not sure that the transition from a more hierarchical organization will go rapidly and smoothly. If the purpose was to advise companies and nonprofits on how to make these changes, the authors would have done better to focus on organizations that were recently hierarchical and rapidly changed to something close to what Orpheus does.

If you are like me, you will be tempted to dismiss the example because it involves highly talented and motivated musicians who earn a good living. But the authors have brought into the book enough examples of nonprofessionals responding just as well that I was persuaded that this model probably can be taken much further than most companies are trying to do. Will CEOs be comfortable in this new role of encouraging the culture, and staying out of the way? I hope so!

Where can you let go and do less as a leader and allow others to lead more? Where do you need to do more as a leader for your organization to accomplish more?
