Book Description

Founded 100 years ago in Vienna, the Wiener Werkstätte-"Vienna Workshops"-was an idealistic movement to unite the fine and applied arts with the goal of creating beautifully designed and crafted objects for every purpose. Begun by Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser, the movement eventually involved hundreds of artists and craftsmen working in architecture, furniture design, tableware, metalwork, ceramics and glass, books, posters, carpets, jewelry, fabrics, and haute couture, not to mention paintings and the traditional fine arts.

This heavily illustrated, compact-format book offers as complete a record as we are ever likely to see of the group's astonishingly creative work, from complex, integrated environments such as Hoffmann's Palais Stoclet in Brussels and Cabaret Fledermaus in Vienna to individual objects such as enameled-glass stemware by Otto Prutscher and vibrantly colored postcards by Oskar Kokoschka. Wiener Werkstätte provides a comprehensive overview of this fascinating movement, one of the high points of modern design history.

3 out of 5 stars Good pictorial guide but without a lot of depth.......2005-03-21

Christian Brandstatter's book offered a broad overview of the 'Wiener Werkstatte (WW)' or 'Viennese Workshop', from the its history to its collaborators (the inimitable Josef Hoffmann, Kolo Moser, Adolf Loos, Gustav Klimt et al), exhibitions, architecture/interiors/furniture, Graphic Design, Glass/Ceramics/Metal and Fashion. The drawback was that text was brief and it was obvious that the author tried to make up for what was lacking in depth and detail with a slew of full-page/full-colored pictures that ran the gamut of the book. The distinguishing feature is the book's inclusion of many little-seen pictures across-the-board, but the sepia-toned photograph (not painting) of Madame Adele Bloch-Bauer* topped everything else off as it was the first I have ever seen in the plethora of English language books I have read on the subject matter.

*Adele Bloch-Bauer was a married socialite who was widely speculated to have had a long-time love affair with Gustav Klimt. She was arguably Klimt's most notable muse who inspired the artist in creating his best works of the "Gold Period", from the popular (even clichéd) painting of "The Kiss" to "Judith & Holofernes" to her many extraordinary full-length portraits beautifully decked out in sumptuous gold paint and glitter.

Given the dearth of books in English language on WW, I would recommend aficionados to delve into literature on some of the most representational, larger-than-life characters of the Secession movement:

(1) "Gustav Klimt & Emilie Floge: An Artist and His Muse" by Wolfgang G. Fischer - a look at Secessionist fashion and the illusive platonic love between the two protagonists;
(2) "Gustav Klimt" by C.M. Nebehay - one of the most insightful accounts ever written on the artist and his collaborators' involvement with WW;
(3) "Klimt" by Frank Whitford - well-written section on the construction and development of Palais Stoclet in Brussels, the most impressive mansion built and its interior meticulously designed and adorned by Josef Hoffman & the forerunners of the WW movement;
(4) "Egon Schiele" by Frank Whitford - a study on the short life of the wayward artist and its contributions to the movement; and
(5) "Kokoschka and Alma Mahler" by Alfred Weidinger - a walk through the tumultuous love-hate relationship between the most famous femme fatale and her artist lover of the period.

      3 out of 5 stars A book that has trouble deciding.......2006-12-25

      This book has trouble deciding whether it wants to teach basic artistic technicalities or just be a genre sourcebood with some how-to-draw guidance for intermediate artists. So many books flub this choice completely, this one doesn't do too bad a job. Again a good sourcebook for someone who wants the genre archetypes layed out simply with some advice on drawing them. But little else. Would be good for the reccomended younger reader.

      Because many of the handsome family portraits in this album of mothers and daughters are set against a velvety black background, the women jump out at the viewer with almost nothing to distract the eye. Some of the photos are arresting-Whoopi Goldberg en famille, for example--and others more plebian, but it's a pleasure to trace the generations through similarities to the eyes or hands, or, in the case of adopted children, a certain stance. Jamaica Kincaid contributes a dark and incantatory opening essay. "I have a mother, and I know her now and she had a mother; her mother is now dead," she writes. "...I knew that woman, my mother's mother; I know her more deeply and more fully than if I had spent every day of my childhood life with her." Brief paragraphs from each of the other women photographed point up the complex connection between mothers and daughters. What makes these texts particularly piquant is the words women choose to define their relationships when only a few are allowed. --Francesca Coltrera

      A pearl of wisdom passed along from mother to daughter can be far more valuable and often more lasting than any heirloom treasure. Generations of Women captures the gems that women bequeath each other generation after generation: knowledge from experience; strength from perseverance; courage; love; and determination. With a candid introduction by Jamaica Kincaid, this newest celebration of inheritance by Mariana Cook follows the success of her Fathers and Daughters and Mothers and Sons. Spanning as many as five generations, Cook turns her camera to women of all backgrounds and perspectives. Here mothers and daughters speak from every stage of life, sharing their own stories in their own voices -- each lluminated by Cook's graceful portraits. The result is a frank and uplifting record of women's lives, the legacies they share, and the differences that shape who they are. Through photographs and dialogues, Generations of Women reveals the unbreakable bonds that hold the women of a family together.

      5 out of 5 stars A fascinating look at women in the family........1998-11-19

      What is most interesting is how Ms. Cook captures the relationships of the women pictured in her photographs. You get a real sense of the proximity or the distance between family members. This book is a loving tribute to the family and would be a great gift to someone in your own.

      5 out of 5 stars With words and photos, a beautiful tribute to the family........1998-07-28

      Marianna Cook renders each family so beautifully with her camera. With words and photographs, this book beautifully chronicles women and their families. No two portraits are alike, and everyone telling of the relationships shared within each.

      Accompanying each portrait are interviews of the family members, some surface, but mostly poignant revelations about the relationships that they share with one another. I know that this book will touch everyone, not just those pictured within its cover.

          Book Description

          What makes the US different from other advanced economies is the opportunity for newcomers acting as entrepreneurs to start new companies, a few of which will then change the world. This book develops three points. First, the New Economy is real: part micro, part macro, and all digital. Second, its emergence around networked PCs propelled the US resurgence in the world economy during the 1990s. Third, rather than subsiding, the current US lead in information technology (IT) could well increase over the next decade. The reason lies in the clustered linking of venture capital and entrepreneurs in a system that can be stylized as `the invention of the method of innovation'. The central theme of the book is the vital role played by newcomers, acting as entrepreneurs, to overthrow the old order and blast through the deep tendencies toward stagnation that afflict advanced, affluent economies. Related strands are (1) an update and reappraisal of Joseph Schumpeter's vision of capitalist development, (2) a regional focus on the rebirth of US computing, and (3) a detailed inquiry into the geography of innovation in strategic clusters of venture capital firms and IT knowledge workers.

          The author provides a sharply etched portrayal of the geography of the new economy. He lists specific case studies of the failure of established managerial corporations to capitalize on inventions, a failure remedied by newcomers. The book recounts traditional and new theories of the entrepreneur and of creative destruction. Primers on venture capital, IPOs, and Internet business models are included, as are comparisons of theory and data on the emergence of new `strategic cities'. Lastly, it offers a brief, readable, detailed, and company-specific history of the PC revolution and the coming of the Internet.

            4 out of 5 stars Madame C. J. Walker: Entrepreneur, Philanthropist, Activist.......2003-10-30

            I have been picking up volumes in the Journey to Freedom series of the African American Library as I have come across them and this particular look at Madame C. J. Walker was the first where I did not recognize the name of the biographical subject. Born Sarah Breedlove a couple of years after the Civil War, she was a mother and a widow by the time she was 20 years old. In 1904 she had a dream in which a man told her the names of secret ingredients for hair-care products. As Lori Hobkirk explains in this informative juvenile biography, black women often lost their hair when they tried to wear it long. The morning after her dream, Sarah prepared her new tonic and was soon selling to to African American women all across the United States.

            Starting with door-to-door sales of her cosmetics, and having adopted the name Madame C.J. Walker after her second marriage, she amassed a fortune and in 1910 even built her own factory in Indianapolis to manufacture her line of cosmetics. As she told the National Negro Business League Convention in 1912, she was a woman who went from working in the cotton fields to working in the cook kitchen, and who them promoted herself into the business of manufacturing hair goods and preparations, eventually building her own factory on her own ground. Madame C. J. Walker represents the standard American rags-to-riches success story, but given that she was an African American woman who adopted a new name at a time when the richest people in the country were white males from old families is what makes her story so inspirational. In 1918 she became the first millionaire African American woman, but long before that point young readers will be impressed by her success.

            Walker and her daughter opened up the first of several schools where women were trained in the "Walker Method" of sales, but she also pioneered the idea of having her customers help her sell the products to other people. In addition to being an entrepreneur Walker was a philanthropist and activist. This Journey to Freedom volume is illustrated with period photographs from Walker's life, including some of the original ads for her hair-care products. The back of the volume has a Timeline for Walker's life, Glossary, Index, and books and web sites that provide Further Information.

            The goal of the Journey to Freedom series is to educate and inform children about the achievements and contributions of America's noted African American leaders, inventors, educators, scientists, entrepreneurs, entertainers, and sports figures. These volumes tell not only the story of the lives of such people from Benjamin Banneker and Sojourner Truth to Rosa Parks and Colin Powell, but also focus on the events that shaped their lives. Madam C. J. Walker was the one name on the list that I did not recognize, but after reading about her remarkable life it is one that I am not going to forget.

            Madam C.J. Walker Building A Business Empire
            By: Kryston Centis

            Madam C.J. Walker was one of the most richest African American women. She got rich by making haircare products for African American women. She sold the product that she made door to door first then she bought a house and used that for her office. When she sold her products from her house she mailed them. Finally she moved again where she could get a house and a business space. She started hiring people to work there and soon there were too many people so she made it bigger, hired a small amount of people and stopped hiring.
            Madam C.J. Walker liked to move to different places where she thought could get her more business. She seemed that she liked working and liked being accompanied by someone. People liked her for making their hair look better.
            The problem is that some of the people thought that Madam C.J. Walker was making their hair look like the white woman's hair. The women didn't like this and stopped buying her products. She wasn't happy and did something about it. Another problem was that Madam C.J. Walker was having heart problems and when people told her to rest she wouldn't.
            She talked to the customers and told them that they are all individuals and would never look the same as anyone else. Her customers started buying her products again. Madam C.J. Walker got very sick and died .
            I would recommend this book to someone else because you will learn something new about someone else. It was a good book and I learned something about her myself.

            4 out of 5 stars A Very Good Book.......2001-11-21

            I liked this book very much, although I really think they could have gotten more detailed. I would recommend this book to anyone doing a research project on women inventors. If you read it, you will definately have a better day, and get an 'a' on your project!
