4 out of 5 stars A Guide to Understanding Land Surveys, 2nd Edition.......2000-01-26

I am a Professional Land Surveyor who bought this book 7 years ago before I was licensed. I enjoyed it thoroughly as a student, it was very well written and interesting. It is focused towards the novice or lay-person, not very technical and it was easy to understand. I still keep it as the best reference for writing legal descriptions that I own.

        5 out of 5 stars Incredible resource.......2002-11-06

Sadly this seems to be out of print now, but it's the single best resource I've ever seen for anything video. We wanted to use it as a textbook at school, but can't find a source for enough copies at a reasonable price.

I highly recommend picking this up if you've ever wondered "Just what does NTSC stand for" or "How do you use color bars"

4 out of 5 stars What else could you need?.......1999-12-30

Frank Normoyle, a technical trainer in New Jersey., December 21, 1999,

This book remains essential to our church's effort to produce quality shows as we work toward eliminating system and environmental bugs while steadily improving technical quality. It is our primary reference source. Using Today's Video allows us to intelligently interface with contractors and vendors. Now we can purchase the equipment we need and not just what the vendors will sell (big difference!). I recommed Today's Video to anyone interseted in this field from the curious to the expert.

        5 out of 5 stars A must-have book for any video producer!.......1999-10-15

When I first got this book I briefly skimmed it and thought I knew alot of what was in it. But the more I read in depth, the more I learned. Everything from using a vectorscope to storyboarding, non-linear editing, audio production techniques, and much more. The book is 700 pages and well worth it if you're just starting out or if you're an established production person. It is written in a friendly manner that is fun and easy to read. Mr. Utz does a great job covering makeup and being interviewed to lighting and switching techniques. This is one of those books that everyone should own because it covers so many different areas. I enjoyed most the sections on digital formats and HDTV. I also liked his tricks on making graphics come alive and altered perspective. Another great thing about this book is by reading it, you can become a tv genius and impress all your other video friends with knowledge of signal definitions and terminology most people don't know about. The color and black & white examples covered throughout the book demonstrate both what to do and what not to do in everything from talk show set-ups to setting your monitor with color bars. Well worth the money -- you won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Never left my side.......2006-01-02

This book reveals many answers to the questions even I asked when I started my career in cartooning. The interviews and thoughts, efforts put in to this book is one reason why even after 16 years as a cartoonist I still enjoy being able to read through this book and get something out of it every time. This isn't just for those starting out, it's also a reminder for those in the industry.

This book has so much to offer the budding cartoonist! Covering such things as: getting started, tools and techniques of the pros, developing great style and characters, creating funny cartoon ideas. turning your cartoons into cash, as well as resources and extra stuff, this book answers all the questions as well as shows you various styles of cartooning by many "strippers" from today and yesterday. I highly recommend this!!!

5 out of 5 stars Van Gogh of Rock.......2000-06-08

I've always been a great fan of Daniel, and I'm so thankful to finally get a book about him! This book answers many questions. It's great to finally hear the whole story! I wasn't aware of Daniel's visual art, and it was great to see hundreds of reproductions of his drawings and see how they're all tied into his complicated Hobbit-esque subreality of Daniel's own creation. The book gave me a deeper understanding of Daniel's creative process. Inspiring!

5 out of 5 stars Rock and Toil.......2000-06-07

Although much could be made of Daniel Johnston's troubled life and the wild stories it produced the author choose to down play this part of the Daniel saga (not completely ignoring it) choosing instead to decontruct his artistic process with brillant results. The book includes plenty of Daniels art, lyrics, and collorbations. Musicians have done well covering his songs and in an unusual twist, artist Ron English "covers" Daniel's drawings with amazing results. Daniel, in my humble opinion, is a national treasure and it is pleasing to see him written about with such insight and respect. I would love to see author Tarssa Yazdani tackle someone like Johnathan Richmond, Mojo Nixon or maybe even a visual artist.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2000-05-15

I loved this book. It's a heartbreaking story of how raw genius for songwriting can almost but not quite be beaten down by mental illness and the music industry. But with a little help from his friends, this guy keeps turning out gems of songs and glorious drawings about survival and triumph. And his life's story is still being lived. This subject deserves a second book, and hopefully, a happy ending. It would also make a great movie. Hey, Mike Meyers, here's your next role.

5 out of 5 stars My thoughts and a response to the Dentist.......2000-05-02

Dentist: Hello Daniel Johnston fans. I'm sorry, but I don't really agree that this is definitive account of Daniel's life.

Fan: Of course you don't because you're not mentioned in the book. It's obvious you're bitter because no one asked your opinion. Not a definitive account? 95% of the information in this book comes from Daniel himself, his closest friends, not to mention his parents. What are you thinking?

Dentist: You see, I have been a friend of "Danny's" for most of his life and believe the early portion of Tarssa's account is bogus.

Fan: Bogus? I have spoken to the author and Daniel about this book and the information has come from INTERVIEWS WITH REAL PEOPLE so what you are saying is that everyone is lying?

Dentist: I know I'll get alot of "this review didn't help" but who cares.

Fan: Well, if you're really Daniel's friend wouldn't you want this book to do well? For him? Doesn't this book celebrate the man, the artist, the songwriter? Not to mention clarifying alot of misconceptions that have been floating around for years? Isn't the overall perception of this book positive or am I missing something? I've read it ten times! Try reading it off of Nitris Oxide (sp)

Dentist: I lived it with Danny.

Fan: Then why didn't they interview the siamese twin?

Dentist: I visited him when he was in Weston State Hospital in Weston, West Virginia; I picked him up from his home in New Cumberland, WV and brought him into my home to listen to his troubled times during manic as well as depressive stages, I was there when his medicine wouldn't work, I was there when his parents, Bill and Mabel, needed someone to talk too, I was there when Danny decided to start recording again and dug out my bass to play along, I was there when we practice in Bill and Mabel Johnston's basement preparing for "Artistic Vice".

Fan: All I can say to this is READ THE BOOK! There are many accounts of the friends that have helped him throughout the years. Contact the publisher so you can give an interview for the next edition. Quit bitching.

Dentist: I am still here when Danny calls from Texas at least twice a week.

Fan: You don't have to fib. A little bird told me it MIGHT be once a month. Dentists aren't allowed to use hyperbole.

Dentist: Don't label Bill and Mabel Johnston as religous zealots. They are good and honest,God fearing people and have raised Danny the best they could.

Fan: I know for a fact that Mabel and Bill have both read this book and they don't feel the way you do. I looked for the word zealot and can't find it anywhere. You are so off base with that statement. This book talks endlessly about the support they have given Daniel since his childhood and never ONCE does it say anything bad about them.

Dentist: Yes, Danny had his moments of fuzzy recollection,

Fan: You say you've read this book but that's all you can come up with is "fuzzy recollection" I would say objectively he is quite lucid in many of his recollections.

Dentist: and yes he didn't always get along with his parents, but they do love him and Danny loves them.

Fan: Where does it say anywhere in this book that they don't love each other!

Dentist: I love him too, and am still waiting for a "definitive" auto-biography. This one isn't it.

Fan: It's not an auto-biography! It's a handbook. Do you love him enough to want what's best for his musical career? Thank God you don't have clout.

Was this review helpful to you?

Fan: Yes, in a way. It made me re-read the book to try and find out where the this guy is coming from and after reading the "more about me" section it's obvious he's bitter about not being interviewed for the book. I'm just glad that he didn't facilitate a book about Daniel himself for half of it would have been about Dentistry and how much he loves blood, and we would have to find out why the walking advertisement for Clockwork Orange puts a pacifier in his mouth. The one question I have for the dentist is......

Why didn't you let Kramer play bass?

                                    Book Description

Roots of Reform offers a sweeping revision of our understanding of the rise of the regulatory state in the late nineteenth century. Sanders argues that politically mobilized farmers were the driving force behind most of the legislation that increased national control over private economic power. She demonstrates that farmers from the South, Midwest, and West reached out to the urban laborers who shared their class position and their principal antagonist—northeastern monopolistic industrial and financial capital—despite weak electoral support from organized labor.

Based on new evidence from legislative records and other sources, Sanders shows that this tenuous alliance of "producers versus plutocrats" shaped early regulatory legislation, remained powerful through the populist and progressive eras, and developed a characteristic method of democratic state expansion with continued relevance for subsequent reform movements.

Roots of Reform is essential reading for anyone interested in this crucial period of American political development.
