Book Description
Walker Percy (1916-1990), the reclusive southern author most famous for his 1961 novel The Moviegoer, lived most of his adult life in Covington, Louisiana. In the spirit of traditional southern storytelling, this biography of Percy takes its shape from candid interviews with his family, close friends, and acquaintances. Their voicessometimes in agreement, sometimes notreveal the ways Percy interacted with the people in his very deliberately chosen environment.
In thirteen interviews, we get to know Percy through his lifelong friend Shelby Foote, his brothers LeRoy and Phin Percy, his former priest, his housekeeper, and former teachers, among others, all in their own words. Over the course of the interviews, readers learn intimate details of Percy's writing process; his interaction with community members of different ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds; and his commitment to civil rights issues. Presenting Percy from a variety of vantage points, David Harwell provides new material to help us better understand Percy's existential questionings and offers a more comprehensive treatment of the writer's character than traditional biographies provide. What emerges is a multidimensional portrait of Percy as a man, a friend, and a family member.
Customer Reviews:
Walker Percy Remembered.......2007-08-14
Walker Percy best described by his brothers Phin and Roy, and Shelby Foote. In Walker's books there appears to be no influence by Shelby, and in Shelby's books there is not a hint of Walker, but these friends from childhood were always a part of each other's life. The person who knew Walker Percy the least appears to be the ex-priest, James Boulware and sadly, the person who knew him best, his wife Bunt, is not heard from. A marvelous little book...will make you want to read all of Walker Percy's books!
Unique windows into Walker Percy through his friends.......2007-05-15
Nicely packaged little treat for Walker Percy junkies, it can also serve as a fine introduction to the man. Harwell gives us an intelligent and well researched, but utterly unpretentious and accessible, set of interviews with some of Percy's closest associates. The reader is given insights from brothers of Percy, his priest, Shelby Foote, his teachers, housekeeper, New Orleans bookstore owner Rhoda Faust, and, most interesting of all if illusive, Rev. Will Campbell.
The picture that emerges is beautiful and complex. Percy is the committed Catholic convert, yet forever questioning. He is warm and social, yet private. Civil RIghts activist, but Vietnam War supporter to the end.
Takes its place alongside Ralph Wood as my favorite work on Percy.

Picturing Southern Writers.......2007-08-21
In their book SOUTHERN WRITERS essayist William W. Starr and photographer David G. Spielman have achieved what few people are able to do in that the biographies of the writers and their photographs are of equal importance. Mr. Starr for each of the 72 Southern authors, if I counted correctly, usually tells us, in one page, how each writer goes about working on his or her craft-- it is surprising how many of them still either write in longhand or plug away on an old typewriter-- and then discusses some of their works and sometimes includes a quotation from the writer. Some of the lions of course are included: Eudora Welty, Reynolds Price, William Styron. At least four have died since this book was published in 1997-- Ms. Welty, Mr. Styron, Larry Brown and Shelby Foote; and there may be others I do not know about. While most of the authors write literary fiction, there are also essayists, poets, writers of nonfiction, history writers, mystery writers and humorists included as well. I was pleased to see Mickey Spillane listed. My father, a blue-collar worker, loved his detective stories.
Mr. Spielman says in his "Photographer's Note" that he shot most of the photographs within a period of 210 days and that he wanted to catch his models showing their "natural expression-- the writers, their spaces and not the photographer's idea of these." He admirably accomplished his goal. With the exception of one or two writers, whose names shall remain anonymous, these writers-- Billy Baldwin, Jill McCorkle, Lee Smith, Ernest J. Gaines, Gail Godwin, Wendell Berry, Pat Conroy et al.-- make you want to sit on a front porch with them, drink a coffee or iced tea and listen to them spin a yarn. What many of them seem to have in common is that they inhabit spaces filled with delightful clutter.
One thing is certain: there will not be a shortage of fine writers from the Southern United States in the foreseeable future.
Book Description
'Things ain't now like they used to be nohow,' a Virginia native told a WPA worker in the 1930s. Indeed, a central theme unifying the hundreds of life histories recorded by Virginia Writers' Project fieldworkers between 1938 and 1941 is that the narrators all bear witness to the vast socioeconomic and cultural changes brought about by the Great Depression and the New Deal's responses to it. These never-published VWP narrative interviews, however, have remained largely unknown and unavailable to readers until now.
Talk about Trouble presents 61 Writers' Project life histories that depict Virginia men and women, both blacks and whites, and offer a cross-section of ages, occupations, experiences, and cultural and class backgrounds. Headnotes set the context for each life history and introduce people and themes that link individual events and experiences. One hundred sixty photographs, most taken in the state by Farm Security Administration or Virginia WPA photographers, add graphic texture and backdrop to the stories and lives recounted.
Customer Reviews:
Social History and Folklife Studies of Virginia.......2001-03-13
During the 1930s, writers and photographers who needed employment documented local history and culture for guides to their states. Some of these WPA guides remain fascinating reading even today. A great deal of the material, however, was never published. This book comes out of the WPA materials that were collected for the state of Virginia. The book consists of photographs and excerpts from interviews along with introductory comments by the editors. There are various themes that are presented, and the editors develop commentary to interpret what they present. The photography is first rate, and there are a lot of interesting stories in this book that are well worth reading. The book also has an archival quality which will make it a valuable resource for historians as well as for folklorists completing contemporary studies of Virginia folklife.

Book Description
This collection of postcards of Southern writers is the most stunning and significant collection of its type to date. Acclaimed photographer Curt Richter does not focus his lens on capturing the totality of a writer's life but instead presents a moment of reflection in the face of the pressure of and struggles with creativity. Includes 24 detachable postcards of writers such as Harry Crews, Ralph Ellison, Richard Ford, Walker Percy, Ishmael Reed, Alice Walker, Eudora Welty, and Bailey White.
Customer Reviews:
PENETRATING PORTRAITS.......2002-06-27
What can a picture tell you about a person? The answer is quite a bit as you view these penetrating portraits of southern writers. A writer's tools are words to convey a story. Photographer Curt Richter uses his tools of lighting, mood, camera and the subjects themselves to reveal a visual story whose impact goes far beyond words.
Over a seven year period, Curt scoured the country taking pictures of those writers associated with the south. His labor was not in vain for he blessed us with outstanding visual views of these writers not seen before. These are not a compilation of formal studio portraits nor are they casual snapshots. You are given a series of sepia toned pictures whose faces, postures, hues and eyes that reveal something more about the subject that meets the eye.
Ralph Ellison looks like an elder statesman as he peers into the lens. Larry King appears to have a haunting quality as his off focus face gives us a smile. Eugene Walter looks like a supplicant in prayer or is he just fooling us? Let your mind and imagination decide as you see this wonderful display of southern authors. For those of you who are collectors of some of their works, you will be delighted with their pictures.
Robert Coles has written a foreward to the book introducing us into the world of southern writers and the culture of the south. Ann Beattie provides us with her observations regarding this collection through her afterword. Now relax, open this book and reflect upon these gifted writers of prose and poetry who have shared their wares with the world.
A Portrait of Southern Writers.......2000-11-24
I have never been so captivated by photographs that truly depict their subjects. I have seen other works by Curt Richter and he truly is the finest portrait photographer of our time. Congratulations on a sensational effort. It came at the right time of year because I am giving this book to all of my friends and family.
Outstanding, Magnificent Photography.......2000-11-15
It's so wonderful to see a group of photographic portraits that dispense with the current trend of the snapshot and at the same time have the courage not to follow a formula. The photographer is obviously aware of the history of portraiture occuring even before the advent of photography. As they say in "Fiddler on the Roof" -- "tradition." Thank God for some tradition. It seems so avant-garde. I throughly enjoyed the book.
Outstanding photography!.......2000-11-10
An exquisite book of photographs. Curt Richter has caught a good deal of the character of a large number of the South's finest writers. One of the most amazing photos of Robert Penn Warren I have ever seen. I might say the same thing about the photos of William Styron, Eudora Welty, and Reynolds Price. Almost every portrait is compelling.
Simply Beautiful.......2000-10-25
The photos in this book are quite stunning. Somehow Curt Richter has produced scores of telling and rather magnetic portraits of sagging, middle-aged Southern writers. A miracle of sorts. Highly recommended.

Also includes full financial data, earnings reports, S&P rankings and stock recommendations.
Customer Reviews:
tons of info in VERY useful format.......2006-01-29
I love owning this book and I generally buy the new edition every year. My investment company offers the S&P reports on their website, but I like to own the book so I can easily browse it, mark it up, flag specific stocks with Post-It-Notes, and so on. I focus quite a big on Standard & Poor's proprietary "investability quotient percentile" [IQ]for my buy-and-hold stock decisions. (I also take a careful look at the ten-year dividend history.) You will also find five-star buy vs sell ratings, target price and when set, earnings/dividend rating, fair value, volatility, relative strength, key stock statistics, dividend data, and LOTS of other information. There is quite a bit of interesting and well-written prose about each company, too---it's not all charts and numbers.
dunk shot.......2006-01-17
its S&P -- 'nuff said.
The CFA level analysis of the 500 most watched companies in the US is astute and pithy.
If you're looking for a comprehensive review of those stock's pros and cons, pick up this book.
excellent reference.......2000-05-01
An excellent reference for any investor, lists all of the s & p 500 with all necessary data for research. Truly a must have for the investor who wants to make money.
