    Book Description

One of the most original and powerful Russian twentieth century artists, Alexej von Jawlensky worked for most of his life in Germany with early spells in France. After he had come to terms with the impact of Gauguin, Cezanne and Matisse, his work went through Fauve and expressionist periods in the development of a highly personal style, In 1909 he helped found the Neue Kunstlervereinigung in Munich, and along with Kandinsky was an outstanding member of that group. He became one of the great twentieth century explorers of the soul, for whom art was 'nostalgia for God.'

This, the first of three volumes that will catalog nearly 2,000 oil paintings, covers the period up to his enforced departure from wartime Germany, during which he developed his brilliant use of colour. Pioneering introductory and end matter to the volume includes an authoritative biographical outline and a full list of one-man and group exhibitions, with Jawlensky's illuninating brief memoir of 1937.

The artist's inventory of his work, carried on after his death by his son Andreas and his wife Maria, was continued after Andreas's death by his wife and daughters Lucia and Angelica, now keepers of their grandfather's archive in Locarno.

                  Book Description

When tourists become lost, overwhelmed, tired, inspired, bored, enlightened, confronted, hungry, upset or tipsy, when they get cheated or fall in love, perceptions change and surprising associations and experiences come to light. In trying to figure out a city, they are mostly investigating themselves. In this madcap tour through five important international cities, Martin Lorenz and one guest artist per city gave themselves 48 hours to experience their destination, to document it and create a visual diary without the use of computers. The resulting evidence reveals places and situations that could never get mentioned in the guidebooks, offering exhibitionistic glimpses into the personal lives of the reporters and the real energy of each city. This volume covers Frankfurt, Copenhagen, Berlin and New York.

                    Book Description

'European Gastronomy into the 21st Century' is a unique text examining the development and origins of European food traditions within social, economic and geographical contexts.

Gastronomy is the art and science of good eating and drinking: a concept that extends outwards to embrace wider notions of tradition, culture, society and civilisation. This book provides a rigorous, well researched and much needed treatment of the subject, systematically outlining:

                    * the development of European gastronomic tradition, and the social, economic, philosophical and geographical contexts of change
                    * the experiences, philosophies and relative contributions of great gastronomes, past and present
                    * the interplay of traditional and contemporary influences on modern gastronomy
                    * the relationship between gastronomy and and travel and tourism
                    * salient issues of nutrition, food hygiene and health promotion

Taking an all-encompassing look at the subject of gastronomy past, present and future, 'European Gastronomy into the 21st Century' uses example menus and case studies to demonstrate the theory. It also provides an insight into the business arena, using key destination restaurants to illustrate management techniques and marketing issues. Accessible and highly structured, the book guides the reader through its wide-ranging and thought-provoking content.

5 out of 5 stars A fun and useful travel guide when doing business in Japan.......2003-01-10

This is a unique and interesting business travel guide and gives a lot of value for its pocket size. As a former military attache to Japan, I was impressed by tips it offered in areas that even seasoned Japanophiles struggle with such as the fine art of giving presents and expert dining etiquette that goes way beyond the standard business cards and bows. The reader gets a rare peek into the minds and hearts of the Japanese people. It's also a sociological and cultural study in value-shifts that are occurring in today's Japan and business changes in foreign investment policies and deregulation. A lot of emphasis has been placed on behavior and language in interpersonal relations, even to the extent of how many seconds to wait before responding to a question! Clear and easy-to-use charts are an excellent feature. The book also begins with a humorous quiz on Japanese famous figures, history and food, and shows how we really do need this new book and the information it provides. Examples of advice are: "When you get in trouble, apologize profusely" and what to do if you're staying near an active volcano. This guide is easy to read and helps us understand the Japanese character and way of thinking. It's also very enjoyable. We loved it! Thank you Brian and Sue!

5 out of 5 stars You would be an alien without this book!.......2002-12-05

Because of my work as an interculturalist, I enjoy reading various books on cultural preparation for Americans, et al, going overseas. This book is by far the best quality to prepare a business traveller or even a tourist for life in Japan. It is concise, yet informative, and supplies plenty of pertinent anecdotes which assist the reader in understanding values which we, as Americans, typically find too foreign to comprehend.

                            Book Description

Empty Meeting Grounds continues Dean MacCannell's post-anthropological search for the cultural subject that is about to emerge from the encounter of the ex-primitive and the postmodern. Here he follows the tourists in their attempts to penetrate the deep periphery (in an essay entitled "Cannibalism Today") and then back home again (in The Desire to Be Postmodern).

Empty Meeting Grounds examines the new cultural forms and community arrangements that accompany the development of global tourism. MacCannell examines the implications of the movement of tourists on Highland Thai trekking tours of primitive villages, and the New Guinea cannibal tours, and sets this new form of tourism against the corresponding reverse movement of formerly primitive and peasant peoples from the remote periphery to western centers of wealth and power.

In Empty Meeting Grounds, MacCannell does not treat these two opposing movements as unrelated. Rather, he sees the linkage between the "ex-primitive" and the postmodern as ineluctable at the level of emerging global culture. The thesis of this book is that human kind has already arrived at, perhaps even gone beyond, the historical moment of the invention of a new kind of community, but we are not yet capable of facing the implication of our collective invention. Will it be a synthesis of the positive human dimensions of so-called "primitive" existence and the beneficial elements of modern social systems and technologies? Or will it be the most repressive alienated existence we have so far devised for ourselves?

Written in the spirit of theoretical activism, MacCannell speculates about the future while being grounded in the present. His theoretical discussions are based upon practical examples: his analyses cover the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Statue of Liberty restoration project, the management of Yosemite National Park and the sale of an entire town of Chinese farmworkers.

3 out of 5 stars personal anger outweighs solid topics.......2007-09-20

Dean MacCannell's "The Tourist" was one of the cleverest, most innovative books I have ever read. (I've reviewed it here on Amazon too.) He analyzed the subject of tourism so that nobody could look at it in the same way again. I was really impressed and used the book in my Anthropology courses and in other places. So, when I saw this volume on sale some years ago in a book store in Cambridge, Mass., I bought it. The title certainly promised more worthwhile insights on the topic of tourism. Having just read the book, I must say I was very disappointed.

EMPTY MEETING GROUNDS is about tourism only in some circuitous, roundabout way. Yes, there is a very short chapter about a Chinese-built town in California, the last such labor-ghetto town in the state, which was bought by a Hong Kong company to be turned into a tourist attraction. This chapter was certainly up to MacCannell's old standard. But the rest were mostly only tangentially connected to tourism. The various essays comprise angry rants or long-winded expositions of MacCannell's own thoughts, own mental ponderings on various issues. While these can be interesting--the man is certainly original and insightful--they don't comprise a focussed collection. Besides that, you have to accept some very long reaches, broad jumps, and inattention to facts or counterarguments. Like many works of the same kind, it is based on the plan that a) you ought to accept 1 because I say so. b) therefore 2 is true, 3 is true, 4 is true and so on. But if we don't accept 1 ? And if there are no facts backing up that 1 ? Well, we have to take those facts on faith because we are not given many. I got tired of reading a poorly-organized collection of arguments, blanket statements like "Postmodernism is driven by the desire to forget the horrors of modernity..." (217) MacCannell fears the rise of fascism in the USA, certainly a reasonable fear, he argues that we are becoming inured to violence--also true---and so on, but to connect these things to postmodernism as a set of theories or a trend in modern social science requires a great leap.
His ideas about cannibalism, arising from an interesting movie called "Cannibal Tours" get bigger and bigger, wider and wider, seeing our world culture as one which appropriates everything and everybody, swallowing it all. But somewhere in there the author's anger overwhelms his reasoned arguments until you feel that he is merely pissed off. That's fine, but I prefer calmer presentations. MacCannell was better when he applied his thinking to a single subject. I think most readers will have trouble with this book.

5 out of 5 stars MacCannell, erudite and angry, chronicles postmodern decay.......1997-08-26

Dean McCannell, an angry academic, takes on the pervasive rot around us in a fascinating collection of essays. The appropriation and conversion of cultural and material goods into commodities is a process that MacCannell calls by its correct name--cannibalism. The historically recent assimilation of all available cultural and material goods into a monolithic system has created a monstrous world order which provides no alternatives to itself. These passionate essays reward many readings. I do not feel I exaggerate when I call this a great and indispensible book.
