4 out of 5 stars Another useful book.......2004-06-18

This book has one unusual strength: most poses are shown from many angles, up to about two dozen in some cases. This gives extra insight into unusual foreshortening and into how the figure articulates.

The weakness of this book is that, in order to show so many different views on a page, each figure photo is relatively small. This is especially disappointing because the models are all Japanese, where most pose books show only European features and figures. This book never meant to document details of faces, though, so I really can't complain,

5 out of 5 stars light and dark.......2000-03-14

From moderate shadow to deep chiascuro effects this is a beautiful addition to the Pose File series. The other books excellently describe the figure, in proportion, motion and moving through space, but mostly in an even tonal scale. This volume emphasizes the extremes of that scale, making it a necessary addition to the set.

5 out of 5 stars good book, decent series, outrageous price..........1999-10-12

I'm trying to learn how to draw, and the books in this and similar series would be really helpful--if I could afford any of them. I found this book in a store where I live and decided to buy it until I checked the price tag that the store had stuck onto it. because I lived in Japan for a while, I'm used to the printed price that appears on all books, so I had just looked there. I have decided to wait until Christmas when I can buy it myself for a decent price. Blah.

5 out of 5 stars Not the last, mind you..........1999-02-26

--Please read my,(Cobalt) previous reviews of the earlier volumes--

-- I am surprised to see that there is no listing of Pose file 8 (Overhead/Underfoot) or Pose File 9 (Group poses), and I would like to take a moment to say that they are both great and you should do your best to find them somewhere... -- Volume seven is one of my favorites, the theme here is lighting, and the lit models look great and show much detail. The poses themselves are a plethora of themes from the previous series, with the added element of a single light source, making some of the models even look sinister, (fantasy artists should have fun with that). Definitely one of the better volumes.

    Cobalt

    4 out of 5 stars It's Pose File 1... And then some..........1999-02-26

---Please read my,(Cobalt) review of volume one---

--Pose File 2 is basically a sequel to Pose file one. I have noticed that the poses are not only different, but also just a little more dynamic.--Unlike the later series, there appears to be no major theme, (I still can't read that Kanji) but it is a thorough book nonetheless.--I recommend that you get the later "themed" series, and then get 2 to complete your collection. --Definitely useful, but don't rush this one...

5 out of 5 stars The Mayas of today: Who they are, how they live and think.......2004-02-03

This book is an excellent read. It provides great estimula for both mind and eyes. As I have lived and worked among poor Mayan peasants for many months, I have been suveying the market of books that describe the situation of the Maya of today. Who they are, how they live, how they think. This book shows you it all, without pretending to be an anthropological monograph.

The advantage of this book is that it does not try to submit its message to the reader in didactical terms. Instead, the photos and the accompanying essays elegantly unfold a series of descriptions, episodes and profound insights that together make it possible for the reader to grasp what Mayan life is like today, and how it evolved from the 1960's and 30 years ahead.

The "photo-essay" chosen by Everton as the form of presentation is a brilliant choice. Everton, author and photographer, lets the reader see a series of facets of Mayan everyday life from the point of view of individual Mayan friends of Everton. The solidarity and love with which Everton shows us scenes from Mayan everyday life do not undermine the books credibility. All general conclusions are based on individual examples. The care for precision in details and the interest taken in describing the common episodes and daily chores of Mayan peasant life make it possible for us to get close to Everton's friends. I have not come across any other book that equals Evertons work in this respect.

Perhaps the greatest advantage of the book is the way it reveals to the reader how the book came to be. Already the introductory chapters pose the problem, how we should think about the concept of Mayan culture. It discusses how Mayas are usually portrayed in the Western world, and it contemplates how this idea can be refined.

Some 20 Mayan peoples of today are the descendants of the ancient Mayas who built the famous pyramid temples. But we must consider that the Mayas have a present and a future as well as a past. Otherwise, we will not be able to understand the dynamics of contemporary Mayan life, says the book. In this respect, the ever changing Mayan culture is just like any other human culture in history.

Everton's photo essays form a persuading defense of the value of what he calls the "cultural diversity" of the world. Everton shows us that cultural diversity may be just as necessary for the survival of the human race as is the biological diversity found in our surroundings.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding review of modern Mayan culture.......2001-04-27

Everton profiles several Mayan families and follows their lives, in words and pictures, for twenty years. The results are compelling and the black and white photgraphy is stunning. He presents the changes that are taking place in their culture due to the demise of the hennequen and chicle industries and the rise of the tourism industry. The message is one of hope. The Maya have survived through thousands of years of change and they will continue to do so. Having met some of the people profiled in the book in person, I can tell you it is genuine in everyway. A must have for anyone interested in the Maya people and the survival of indigenous cultures!

4 out of 5 stars The drips at MAD, in all humidity, offer a shower of laughs.......2005-03-20

    "It's raining, it's pouring...
    Read this, you'll be snoring..."

Does anybody try to see a paperback reprint as hard as the usual gang of idiots as "MAD" magazine do on these back covers? Anyhow, "The Weather MAD" was first published in 1990, so I missed pretty much everything that is collected within these pages when it first came out. The exception is the first piece, "Raiders of the Lost Art," courtesy of artist Jack Davis and writers Dick De Bartolo & Frank Jacobs, which explores Hollywood jumping on the cliffhanger bandwagon because of the success of a certain Stephen Spielberg movie starring Harrison Ford regarding a character now renamed "Inbanana Jones." For those who are aficionados of these "MAD" parodies, the final selection in the book is Mort Drucker and Lou Silverstone's send up of "magnumb, p.u." which takes on hit television shows that feature a private detective who wears wild Hawaiian shirts, tight designer jeans, drives a Ferrari, and operates out of the estate of a wealthy writer (that should narrow it down a bit, huh?). Davis and Silverstone work together to do "Stuff We Don't Get to See on the Tube," which takes some potent jabs at familiar television shows and personalities that would still be true today since to the best of my knowledge "National Geographic" has still not done a special that shows topless white ladies.

In terms of familiar favorites, you will find a couple of installments of Spy vs. Spy, Dave Berg providing a look at "The Lighter Side of..." assorted topics this time around, and Sergio Aragones teaming up with John Ficarra for some "MAD" suggestions for things to "Give Thanks" for on Thanksgiving. The best example of comic anarchy in this collection is Paul Coker and Barry Liebmann's "Isn't It Suspicious..." This is a look at the hypocrisy of a world where doctors are allowed to park illegally on emergency house calls (even though doctors no longer make emergency house calls). Right behind that is "A MAD Look at Discrimination," in which George Woodbridge and Larry Siegel look at the history of discrimination in this country, ending with the principle of "reverse-reverse discrimination" in the quest for equal rights.

This is followed by Coker and Jacobs presenting "Still More American Jokes They're Telling Poland," which falls a bit flat because the answers to the joke questions are all true but not necessarily funny because they are sadly true, not funny true. But Coker and De Barolo's "MAD Guide to Understanding Statistics" is legitimately funny because it is true. Some pieces, such as "More Subdivisions for Public Places" and Al Jaffee's "Video Games Based on Real Life" are really dated at this point. Besides, it was too soon for me to look at one of Paul Peter Porges bits about uses for live lobsters. Consequently, "The Weather MAD" is a solid paperback offering, but not a collection of verifiable "MAD" classics (like they would ever put together one of those on purpose).

                            Book Description

It would seem that business investment in information technology (IT) is at root no different from business investment in anything else. After a careful consideration of the costs of the investment and its anticipated benefits, a decision is made as to whether the benefits of the investment outstrip the costs and by how much. If the benefits are competitive with other investment alternatives (say, a major marketing campaign), then the business will commit financial resources to the IT proposal. Otherwise it won't. This decision making process is at the heart of capital budgeting. Senior executives have been making IT investment decisions for well over three decades. So why is the measurement of IT investment payoff so difficult and controversial? Why do we need a book dealing with contemporary approaches to measuring IT investment payoff? Why have earlier approaches to measuring IT investment payoff proven unsatisfactory? In what respects have earlier approaches fallen short? Do we need to scrap earlier approaches entirely or can we find important improvements to these approaches such that they can be newly applied to effectively measure IT investment payoff in ways that are convincing to senior management? This book will help you to find improvements in existing methods for measuring IT investment payoff as well as to find new, innovative methods for addressing the value of emerging IT.

                            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent publication for measuring retuns on IT investments.......1998-12-14

This is a valuable publication that provides a wealth of information in the area of measuring returns on Information Technology investments in organizations. The book addresses many critical issues of assessing IT investment payoffs in a very clear and systematic fashion.

While many publications have addressed the issue of adaptation and integration of IT in modern organizations, not too many publications have addressed the issue of ways for measuring IT investment payoffs. In recent years, many organizations have resorted to outsourcing options and other alternatives due to the lack of full understanding of how to measure returns on their IT investment. While much have been said about advantages and potentials of IT in organizations, many IT managers have failed to develop a concrete method of measuring the payoffs on their various investment in information technology resources. This lack of accountability have created many doubts in the mind of upper management that returns on IT investment can not be measured accurately. In my opinion, this book provides a significant contribution to the body of knowledge that is seriously needed to understand the issue of measuring IT investment payoffs. It also provides many techniques for carrying out programs that can allow IT management to bring accountability to their organizations.

Overall, this is an excellent book for those who are interested to learn and apply the concepts of measuring IT investment payoffs.

                                      Book Description

Addressing the current dearth of available literature on this topic, the editors use a range of international case studies to explore street vending and informal economies which continue to be, especially in developing countries, a vital economic driver.

This volume collects essays from authors around the world about the markets and vendors they know best, including studies of USA, China, Mexico, Turkey. The contributors speak of the struggles that vendors have faced to legitimize their activity, the role that they play in helping societies adapt to and survive catastrophes as well as the practical roles that they play in both the local and global social and economic system.

As well as highlighting the importance of street markets as a phenomenon of interest in itself to a growing body of scholarship, this study demonstrates how an analysis of street vending can provide insights not only into economic anthropology, but also urban studies, post modernism, spatial geography, political sociologyand globalization theory.
