Maybe Not..........2007-03-19

It's a bit too short for anybody who really wants to learn how to draw The Little Mermaid at a thin 40 pages. The instructions don't give away anything that you couldn't figure out by looking at screencaps of the movie. If you're reading this, you must have access to a computer, so my advice is to just search for some images of The Little Mermaid and try to draw on your own. For very small children it's probably just fine, but for anyone age 10 and up, this might be a little boring.

It really works!.......2001-03-25

Even though this book is meant for kids, I bought it anyway. I'm 16 and I really want to be an animator when I'm older, and surprisingly this book really helped me learn to draw all the "Little Mermaid" characters on my own, and helped me get a basic grasp of the cartoon anatomy. I have all the books in this series and I LOVE them all, they really helped my cartooning skills & they're fun to use as well.

My First Ariel.......2001-02-22

For those of us who want to draw, but have little or no actula experience, this book is invaluable. By going through the fundamentals of the proper procedures of drawing Ariel and her friends, one will be able to achieve artwork that really looks like her, instead of being an incredible simulation. The only drawback is that there are not enough drawings of Ariel, but you get a sense of body position, facial reactions and making the drawing flow. It works for me

Views of Paris nightlife in the early 1930's.......2004-04-29

Divided into 19 sections, each including a short essay on one subject (ex.: The Street Fair) with accompanying illustrations. Photographs include full-page printed to the edge of the paper (unfortunately also to the spine of the book), full-page with border, half and quarter page. Copyrights on most of the the photographs, listed in an appendix, range from 1931-33, a few are 1934.

Most of the 150 photographs are very good duotone reproductions, a few are less than great. My copy is a softcover, publ. by Thames & Hudson, 2001, labeled Printed in Italy on the back cover.

The subjects range from public toilets and their various uses, through petty underworld figures, gay nightclubs, prostitutes and brothels, bums, to backstage at the Folie-Bergere and an upper-class opium den. One interesting section deals with the annual "Balls" (read orgies) organized by the Schools of Medicine and the Arts on the Left Bank for their students. All get a sympathetic and nonjudgemental treatment. Overall an fascinating, but fragmented glimpse of Paris night life in the early 30's.

An amazing snapshot of a time long forgotten..........2003-08-27

The photographs and stories in this book are truly remarkable. The underground world Brassai allows the reader to navigate is one that will leave a mark on your heart and tear at your soul. From lonely streetwalkers to the many faces of Parisian nightclubs, this amazing photographic journey gives a modern audience a true glimpse of what life was like in the 30s.

If you don't have it - get it........2001-09-08

Don't let the title put you off, there is very little in this book that would shock a modern audience. Times certainly ain't what they used to be. Brassai's photos and writings of a time now long gone however will slowly infuse in you a strange and somewhat uncomfortable nostalgia for a time long before you were born and places you wouldn't visit had you been born. Removed so far in time, it's all very safe - perhaps.

This book examines the problematic relationship between unions and the unemployed in New York City during the 1990's. Historically, trade unions in the U.S. have had an interest in the political mobilization of the jobless to expand unemployment insurance and lessen the threat of lower wages, reduced union density, and weaker bargaining positions for unions. Despite these advantages, trade unions have rarely organized the unemployed, because they represent a potential threat to the organizational control, leadership, and legitimacy of the trade unions themselves. Moreover, the interests of the unemployed conflict directly with those of the securely employed trade unionist.
The study identifies union responses to unemployment at local and regional levels and the responses of independent activist organizations. The research suggests that hiring hall unions produce exclusive organizing strategies that have deeper accountability to their members, but with organizing objectives that serve only the narrow interests of core members. By contrast, workplace-based unions typically engender class-oriented unions with narrow accountability to members, but with organizing objectives that extend beyond their immediate members.

Unemployment Activism.......2005-02-22

This book represents the best of political and social ethnography as it provides an account of how micro-organizing among the unemployed transformed the national unemployment law. At the book's core is an examination of the testy relationship between labor unions and social movements. Simply put, the author asserts that unions and organized labor bodies typically ignore those that are not members while those unions that rely on hiring halls remain intertwined with the jobless. While this analysis is novel, I would like to see the author further elaborate on this theoretical perspective and provide additional case study material to prove his point. Overall, however, this book richly documents organized labor's relationship to the jobless as the neoliberal policies of the United States were undercut by the federal government. I highly recommend this book. The book, however, is quite expensive, so I suggest you take it out of your library, as I did.
