Great ideas..........2007-06-08
This book has been very useful to me so far. It has an easy design style moving from kitchen to living room to bathroom to bedroom with lovely pitures and tips on how to use the space you have available. A number of the pictures were for areas which did not fit my description of small but they did provide ideas that I was able to use for my place. This was a good buy for me.
Helpful and Enjoyable.......2007-04-02
There are numerous photos of a wide array of possibilities for a small living space. The overall aesthetic is comfortable, practical and charming--NOT over the top, expensive and/or absurd like some interior design books. I found several ideas for my own home in this book and am happy I purchased it!
One thing you might want to know is that the majority of ideas are better suited for home owners, rather then renters.
It's okay i guess.......2007-01-01
There were some okay ideas & pictures, but the small rooms were not that small, or if they were small, they did not have any limiting factors (doors, windows, closets). So not a good match for me, because I live in a gerbil-warren of a house. But the pix were pretty.

Book Description
A cutting-edge design book for small apartments, Studio Apartments: Big Ideas for Small Spaces introduces the reader to the joys of small space living, whether in simple studios, tiny one-bedrooms, or more complex arrangements where two small rooms or studios are joined to form a larger but still compact living area.
Studio Apartments examines in detail how more than twenty architects have created remarkably refined and varied living spaces within small confines. A master bedroom can be carved from seemingly nonexistent space and then concealed behind a frosted-glass wall. A kitchen can evolve from a closet. A single long room with windows only at its end can become a warm and inviting living space. Here are some of the freshest, most original approaches to creating a real home within spaces smaller than 1,000 square feet, and in some cases less than 500 square feet.
The twenty-four beautifully photographed apartments are presented complete with floor plans, gorgeous before and after photographs, and clear text that leads the reader through the design process and highlights the "big idea" that makes each apartment distinctive.
With Studio Apartments, an apartment dweller with an eye for style can transform their dreams into reality. In this book, James Trulove takes on the challenge of interior design for small apartments. With photos and case studies including floor plans of more than twenty studios under 800 square feet each, readers are shown solutions to the typical problems architects are asked to solve: creating sleeping alcoves, efficient kitchens, appealing bath and dressing areas, adequate storage, and work and entertainment areas.
Actual projects show how architects and interior designers extract maximum style and usage from small, urban apartments: a master bedroom is carved from seemingly nonexistent space and then hidden behind a frosted glass wall; a closet becomes a cook's kitchen, and a single long room with windows at one end is transformed into a warm and inviting living room. The "big idea" that makes each apartment special is highlighted in designs ranging from traditional to casual modern to cutting edge.In this book, James Trulove takes on the challenge of interior design for small apartments. Customer Reviews:
Very Modern.......2005-08-24
All of the spaces shown except one(Which also happens to be the only one under 800 sq ft) are very modern. Over all the pictures and layouts were nice, but to me kind of cold. I think it mentions casual modern, didn't see too much of that! If you like looking at ultra modern and expensive, larger than 1000 sq ft lofts, then buy this book!
Modern ideas for small and nice spaces.......2005-02-12
I thought the styles and ideas are wonderful, if you have modern taste with creative resources to pay for the remodeling of your studio apartment. Granted, most the apartments displayed were from individual that could afford to spend a good sum of money to remodel, however, I was able to get good ideas to re-decorate my studio apartment in South Beach (Miami Beach, Florida). The benefit to buying this book was that I did not have to buy 10-20 Architecture magazines in order to acquire ideas. I was able to duplicate a bath room in this book, without "breaking the bank"-if you have the time to research and compare costs.
For example, I shopped on E-bay(vessels sinks/best prices for modern fixtures and sinks: www.aquaimports.com), Home Depot(only the bath tub)and "leg work" for the bathroom tiles (Modern little colorful tiles) (Spanish Tiles Corp, located in Miami, Fl)-called many contractors. Please remember before starting any project, check with your buildings and local zoning requirements, to under-go the projects seen in this book. If you are wondering, no I am not rich, but I did "cash in" my 401K in order to buy the apartment and remodel it, it was better than leaving it in the "stock market."
A book for guys...........2002-02-17
Okay, maybe I'm biased or old-fashioned or both, but I don't find the apartments shown in BIG IDEAS FOR SMALL SPACES-STUDIO APARTMENTS attractive. The authors are both men with a great deal of knowledge about design, and I am sure their ideas will appeal mostly to men.
The examples shown are minimalist, modern, angular, and seem to belong to hard-working types who drop in only to sleep. For the most part these apartments are lacking in color which is the single most important element in decorating as far as I am concerned. Although the authors show some colorful ideas in their section on "cozy" apartments, for the most part their idea of making a place more homey seems to be adding books on shelves, chunky ashtrays, and sports trophies. In addition to cold, angular furniture and clunky "knickknacks", the minimalist rooms are often without curtains and/or have walls that are downright stark. One idea of "lightening" shows a curtain with a "porthole" in it that allows one to "look out" at the view.
If you're a guy looking for a book on how to decorate an appartment with a modernist "masculine" look this may be the book for you. One other note: the book was printed in China and the photographs looks like those in 1950s era books even though the publication date is 2000.
Beautiful and creative.......2001-10-17
This is one of my favorite design books. I notice some other reviewers have complained that the apartments shown in this book are beyond their budget (alas, mine too). However, the concepts can be applied with less spendy solutions, and let's face it: a book filled with photos of ordinary spaces would lack the magic that this book possesses and would inspire fewer people (if any) to dream about their own space.
Inspirational.......2001-10-16
Excellent combinations of photos and drawings to show off the features of these fantastic units. Before and after plans illustrate how design potentials can be optimized and achieved...

Stylish look at dozens of ways to create storage & space.......2002-08-31
It's true, unlike the other reviewer I live only with my husband. Yet we both work from home, have numerous hobbies, store stuff for relatives who live on a boat but like to visit and access their belongings, and host visitors. Possessions seem to multiply like mice, yet we want a stylish home. How to cram it all in while maintaining the illusion that our home is full of space?
Christine has written a book filled with clever ideas, all of them illustrated with beautiful photographs on, I think, every single page. Anyone who values a beautiful home will acquire valuable ideas by looking at this book - it's become one of my top favorites. I think someone looking for graceful ways to present their precious belongings will especially appreciate this book as she shows how to highlight each room.
While you can't make a space bigger, you can make it a pleasure to live in. My rooms will always have more stuff visible than the staged photos in this book, but they do give me inspiration (particularly when I'm in the mood to get rid of stuff!).
Small Ideas for Small Spaces.......2001-10-02
The book is beautifully presented, fun to look at, and sometimes interesting to read. I didn't want a coffee-table book! I wanted ideas for my small townhouse, and I found the ideas and suggestions uninspiring and impractical. The ideas would be useful if I lived by myself, and could decorate my home in the gallery-like fashion of the homes in the book. Well, happily, I don't live alone. I have a family, and two cats, and life isn't simple, or uncluttered. A beautiful home is important to me, but not at the cost this book offers. I'll continue my search for practical suggestions to help me accommodate our lives, possessions, and needs.

Book Description
The first book in a new series, Pocket Gardens provides design solutions from professional landscape architects for small garden spaces. Landscaped looks that may have seemed possible only in large areas can be achieved on a small terrace or patio, a roof or townhouse garden, or on a small lot-and this book shows readers how. Each garden features a "big idea"-the design solution that makes that garden special.
More than thirty gardens by twenty noted landscape architects are presented with beautiful color photographs, along with plans and drawings that provide detailed guidance. Readers are shown ways to achieve a range of looks, from a traditional New England garden to an avant garde garden fashioned from recycled glass. Professional tricks are revealed, including how to make small outdoor spaces appear larger using screening devices, terracing, "the borrowed view," and water to create reflections, as well as paving and planting techniques.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing Garden Design Book.......2001-04-29
I was truly disappointed in this garden book. I was not inspired or intrigued by any of the gardens shown. I do admit that the book may appeal to someone with a very small urban courtyard and a preference for the avant garde style garden. The gardens were mostly minimalist with emphasis on huge graphic shapes imbedded in the lawn or piles of crushed glass layed out in pyramids. Really, an "aluminum garden"?? If there is no plant life, isn't it really just a patio and not a garden? The photography was less than stellar, with several photos out of focus. The two to three page spreads per design usually just had photographs of the same object from three different angles. I do not recommend this book for anyone who enjoys gardening with plants, discovering new plant varieties, or are looking for inspirations for plant combinations. The hardscape designs weren't very interesting either.
Small Gardens - but by American Standards!.......2000-05-14
This is a wonderful book - and useful too, since it contains garden plans for each garden featured. Living in the Netherlands, we found that the definition of "small" according to this book does not apply to some of the really (!) small gardens here. Yet, we can adapt the plans, adopt just a few of the design solutions, or consider the sometimes unusual materials applied. Definitely worthwhile, if only for the beautiful photography.

Customer Reviews:
Good Graphics are Not Enough.......2005-07-17
One question I presume authors and editors ask when preparing an instructional manual for beginning photographers is how much information to present. One doesn't want to bog the beginning photographer down with so much technical detail that he or she just gives up on the effort. At the same time there are some critical tasks in photography that require a good insight into what technical things are happening in the camera if the beginning photographer is to take something more than snapshots. This question came into my mind while reading this book.
The editors of this and a whole series of photography books by AVA seem to have given serious consideration to graphic design and have created a handsome looking book. The illustrative pictures are quite attractive. The format presents brief instructional text under a subject heading like "Adding Light" and then a few one- or two-word pointers like "ringflash", "reflector" and "bounced light". The editors are so committed to this format that the book starts with a section entitled "How to get the most out of this book". I congratulate AVA on trying this approach, but I'm not sure it's effective.
For example, for the serious beginner it's important to understand the relationship between the amount of light in the scene and the camera's aperture and shutter speed and the film or digital media's sensitivity. The information is in the book, but in just a few very brief paragraphs. I felt that this section could have been expanded significantly.
On the other hand, more than half of the book is devoted to a section called "What to shoot". Here are subdivisions like buildings and gardens, children, and landscapes. Undoubtedly, it's important to provide the beginner with a broad overview of the opportunities for photographs and there are a lot of useful tips in each section, but some of the sections seem overdone. There are six pages devoted to underwater photography. This is a branch of photography that is so specialized that no one should think of undertaking it based on six pages of a beginners manual. At the same time devoting so much space to underwater photography means that some other subject, like exposure, had to be scanted.
Another opportunity that was missed was the discussion of digital photography. Given that more than half of new cameras sold are now digital, this should have been an important emphasis in the book. Yet I don't recall that there was a single mention of histograms (a display of the distribution of light values in a picture) which are one of the most significant advantages of digital cameras. (I couldn't look up histograms in the index because there was none; a serious omission in a reference book!) Four pages were devoted to film itself but not a page was devoted to digital capture media.
There is a section on digital processing but I expect that only the experienced user of PhotoShop, clearly not the audience for this book, would understand it.
Each of the many photographs in the book includes a discussion of the circumstances under which it was taken with some shooting data. Some readers will undoubtedly find this feature useful if they give the material thoughtful analysis.
Some of the information in the book is wrong or misleading. For example the author suggests that longer focal length lenses have shallower depth of field. But for a given image size on the media and the same aperture, depth of field is the same regardless of focal length. The author also suggests that digital media don't suffer reciprocity failure during long exposures. That is true, but she doesn't mention that there is usually increased electronic noise.
In summary this is a beautiful book, aimed at the beginning photographer that tries a different graphic design approach to instruction. It's too bad that more emphasis was not given to topics important to the beginner.

Baseball and Billions: A Probing Look Inside the Business of Our National Pastime
ASIN: 0275934411 |
Book Description
Kenneth M. Jennings examines union-management relations in professional baseball, bringing together all the information the sports fan needs to follow the issues surrounding player-management arbitration in this unique industry. Covering the history of collective bargaining action in baseball from 1869 to the 1990 season, this book examines the issues that influence those high-profile player-management-owner negotiations. Balls and Strikes reveals: how in recent years the Major League Baseball Players' Association (MLBPA) has successfully parlayed owner disunity into substantial gains for its members; that baseball, in a statistical sense, surprisingly exhibits little discrimination against black and Hispanic players; how there is very little relationship between pay and performance in professional baseball. Baseball fans and sports journalists as well as professionals in management and labor relations, will find Balls and Strikes a fresh and exciting look at America's favorite pastime. Balls and Strikes presents the confrontations and relationships between players and management from the perspective of several hundred collective bargaining participants--the union and management officials who negotiate the labor agreement and the players who must approve and live with it. Kenneth M. Jennings derives his perspective from a variety of media sources, related biographies, autobiographies, and articles. The result is a highly readable book about owners, commissioners, agents, the media, manager-player relations, player pressures including drug and alcohol problems, race and ethnic issues, and player mobility and salaries. The book discusses the history of collective bargaining action in baseball from 1869 to 1966; the year Marvin Miller became president of the MLBPA, through the 1970s and Miller's successful bargaining efforts, into the 1980s and the opening of the 1990 season. Balls and Strikes discusses key participants in the collective bargaining process--owners, agents, the media, managers, and players--and concludes with a look at contemporary industrial relations issues in professional baseball: drug and alcohol abuse; racial discrimination; and the relationship between pay and performance.

THE ECONOMIC REALITY OF BASEBALL.......2000-02-10
This book is an intense and pretty thorough historical contemplation of the economic aspects of Major League Baseball. For someone interested in learning more about how baseball functions as a business and not just as a pastime, Jennings's book is a helpful starting point, because not a lot of books have been written which focus solely on the various labor and business issues in baseball. He gives many different aspects of the business of baseball their due, including a thorough analysis of the reserve clause, the aftermath of free agency, and Marvin Miller's success (with the help of the Major League Baseball Players Association) in cultivating a union consciousness among the players. I read this book right before Marvin Miller's autobiography, and it provided me with a lot of background information on free agency and the various labor disputes which have surfaced in baseball over the years. Jennings has a flair for writing history, and integrating his analysis with anecdotes which draw the reader into the reality of the business world of baseball. Jennings's one downfall in this book is that he kind of leaves it blowing in the wind- I would have liked for him to speculate more on the future of the economics of baseball. After such a thorough critique of the various elements and events which have become pivotal in baseball's business, I expected him to carry it further. Still, I would reccommend it to anyone interested in examining baseball from a more business or labor-oriented perspective.
