What a disappointment!.......2002-08-03

How anyone could take the most facinating subjects in the world (the Nicholas Brothers) and make it dull, dead, BORING is beyond me! But this author has done it. I hope she has another career goal, because her writing is just awful and she conveys NO excitement, fun or even history. She glosses over Fayard & Harold's actual history and instead focuses on describing each tap step of each routine--and even to me, as a tap dancer, DULL! I want to hear their stories, for goodness' sake. I KNOW their dancing!

A scholarly analysis, but not a biography.......2000-10-10

I would recommend purchasing Ms. Hill's treatise on the dance and historic origins of the Nicholas Brothers' dance styles and choreography. However, those who seek a detailed biography will be disappointed, as this book was aimed to be a scholarly work, not a biographical one. The book has little mention of their personal life, marriages, divorces, activities apart and completely ignored many foreign films they made in the 1950's. Harold's marriage to Dorothy Dandridge is mentioned only in passing, and his extensive career in Paris for a decade was only lightly researched. No personal family interviews were apparently done. Although excellent as a dance resource, those seeking a more well-rounded insight on the personality and life of these two genious entertainers will be better served by a biography, which Ms. Hill's book does not aim to be. It will make a great companion work to a still much-needed in-depth look at their lives.

This is the book I've waited 30 years to see. Georgia Lee PhD probably knows more about Polynesian rock art than anyone except the original carvers of that art. She spent years on Easter Island, living among the islanders and recording the petroglyphs. When she came back to California after these field trips, she told us delightful stories about the people who lived there -- and she wrote about the island's archaeology (THE ROCK ART OF EASTER ISLAND, AN UNCOMMON GUIDE TO EASTER ISLAND, etc.)

Now, at last, she has written the stories she told us -- stories of the island people and her adventures among them. Why Eduardo wore a dirty tee-shirt when he greeted Prince Phillip of England, how Luz Mercedes got that nasty scar, the jail-break that ended when the escapees ran out of booze in that cave. And so much more. Wow. "Island of Memory" indeed. What a treat.

A new book appearing on Rapa Nui bookshelf brightly features the whole set of interesting and curious facts about the island and the islanders, the narrative of the modern history developing in the front of the author. Starting from the eighties of the past century, it encompasses many specific topics hard to find in the existing Easter Island literature. The reader can literally feel the pace of time, reflected in the described sequence of changes taking place in Hangaroa village and the archaeological sites of the island. Buildings are constructed, hotels grow, cars increase in number; airplane flights became more frequent, enabling much more people to visit Rapa Nui; archaeological sites undergo throughout investigation and are become re-built from the ruins.

The book supplies interesting details concerning the rock art recording project carried out by the author, describing the work performed at 'Orongo, Rano Kau, Poike, in the vicinities of 'Anakena and Ahu Ra'ai. We learn about the discovery of the cave with Make-make petroglyphs, statues returned from Hangaroa back to the solitary ceremonial platform at Poike and the "traveling moai" set upright near Tongariki after its travel to the exhibition in Japan. There are descriptions and photos of Ahu Tongariki destroyed by a tidal wave and its current reconstructed appearance.

The book is richly illustrated, featuring over 150 black and white photos, more than a dozen color illustrations, about 20 petroglyph tracings and numerous drawings by the author, which adds a special touch to the book. Among the photos published in the "Island of Memory" are one-of-a-kind: breath-taking aerial views of the island (Rano Kau, 'Orongo, Tahai complex, Ahu Tongariki, Poike peninsula and Poike ditch); photos from Motu Nui islet and its caves; photos illustrating the filming of BBC Easter Island documentary in 1987 and the Hollywood movie a couple of years later. The evolution of the Tapati festival from early days to the modern times spectacular show is discussed.

Several chapters of the book are devoted to the islanders and their life, showing the kind, strong, optimistic, and open-hearted Rapa Nui people; there are many romantic and moving descriptions of the enchanted island, its scenery and unique sites, which makes the reader longing to visit this beautiful place in the Pacific. All of this together with the incredible story-telling skills of the author, supplying bright humorous descriptions of the different events that occurred while her rock art recording project was in process, make this book very interesting and fascinating, bringing it (to my opinion) to the "must have" category for everyone, who wishes to learn more about the history and culture of Easter Island.

This book will bring back memories of the Rapanui people to anyone who has been lucky enough to visit Easter Island. Those who haven't been but are interested in this special place will gain an appreciation of these resilient people that will rival their wonder and awe of the "mysteries" of Easter Island. This is a very high-quality book, with 192 pages, which dimensions are of 20 x 30 cm (approximately 10 x 12.5 inches). It contains more than 220 full-color photographs that range from aerial photos taken during various flights and under different light conditions, to underwater pictures of caves and native fish species of the island. It has a large number of photographs of archaeological sites and landscapes, but, and perhaps most importantly, the last 58 pages are devoted to photographs of islanders of Rapa Nui that belong to the Rapa Nui ethnic group. Also included are images of the Tapati Rapa Nui, which is an event that brings their ancient customs and rates to life.

An excellent addition to the Rapa Nui library, with glorious color plates showing every aspect of the island. So many Easter Island books focus wholly on Easter Island's past, and the moai statues. This one includes excellent aerial views of the whole island and island life as well as its archeological splendors. A few too many of those pretty girls than can really be justified though, Carlos!

I heard that Robert Sabbag was a good writer so I decided to pick up Snowblind up and read it and I couldn't put it down. I thought that it gave a really close look into the drug trade and it was very detailed so you really got a feel for the life that was lead. I have started reading his books now and I can't stop. I have told many of my friends to read the book.

One of the best........2002-07-18

If we consider Thomas de Quincey's "The COnfessions of an English Opioum Eater", Baudelaires "The Artificial Paradises" and Ludlows "The Hasheesh Eater" the three classical pillars of the drug books, "Snowblind" sets a new way of approaching the theme.

Sabbag manages to write a funny, entertaining and well defined book about what the beginning of the cocaine smuggling was. He has inherited the best ways of HUnter S. Thompson without loosing and inch of his own style. This book is the "bible" for all smugglers. In the last edition of Cannongate there is an introduction by Howard Marks, author of the bestseller "Mr Nice". Well, if you liked "Mr Nice" this book goes way beyond in the form and in the content. The characters shown are interesting and relevant to the story, the information delivered will not bore you. Sabbag tells what he has to (a lot) and misses what would bore you.

Normally drug books will fall into topics like rude language and obscure characters most of the time very badly developped, now, Zachary Swan is a dandy, the language is only rude when there are direct implications for it to be so (not often) and when you finish the book you have the feeling you have gone through the adventure with the Silver Fox (name given to Swan by Canadian Jack).

Interesting, But Dated.......2002-03-10

I enjoyed this book, but it was a slow read. I thought it was interesting how Swan smuggled in the 70's, but I'm sure none of these techniques would work today--if for no other reason, the cocaine-sniffing dogs! The author writes very well, but he was so sharp and witty, that I'm afraid a lot of those witticms flew right over my head, and I had to re-read many times to figure out what was meant, and even then, sometimes couldn't.

Too detailed, where's the excitement.......2001-12-17

After seeing the movie Blow and reading the related book, I enjoyed the subject so much I bought this book. I was disappointed. First, this is a very old book written in the 70's. Almost an amatuerish attempt. This book describes the drug smuggler, how he gets in the business, how he imports and makes his connections, and how he eventually is caught. Unfortunately, the author didn't know how to edit the book and instead starts on a story and then decides to give you an education on everything he has read about the subject. Then he goes back to the story. Therefore, I found this book to be verrrrry slow.

On the positive side, it's almost comical how this guy falls in the business and decides to go to Columbia to set up his product. Not really knowing anyone, he just meets street people and eventually runs into connections. The smuggler's real talent is concocting the scam on bringing the product in. Most of his shipments are not stopped, but even if they were, he develops stories so his mules can act like they had no knowledge and won't be charged. You should be aware, this is really not a big-time smuggler on the scale of the Blow character, but rather this smuggler brings in enough to last him a few months, then goes back for another trip.
