Meinardus (Fellow of the Institute of Coptic Studies in Cairo) and Marie-Helene Rustschowscaya (Head Curator, Department of Egyptian Antiquities, Louvre, and Director of the Coptic section), as well as emendations and an introduction to this English-language edition by Gawdat Gabra, Christian Egypt: Coptic Art And Monuments Through Two Millennia is a truly stunning and unusually panoramic history of the artistic expression of the Coptic Church ranging across hundreds of years. Gorgeous color photography, illustrative black-and-white images, showcase the extensively detailed background information on the history and creation of great works of architecture and expression which fill this singularly impressive volume from cover to cover. And as a reminder of just how far politics and leadership have strayed, there's even a visit from the remarkably well-preserved Abraham Lincoln himself.

Hardly an insightful satire, it is rather one continuous repetitive republican joke about how gore is stiff, janet has a firm handshake, and clinton chases women - as if that was everything that defined these people. I can take a good satire - just make it, at least, interesting.

Long Insider Joke.......2003-06-02

It's like reading a Dilbert cartoon if you've never experienced corporate life - only it goes on much longer. Be aware that the entire book consists of an imaginary trip by the Republican author to a Democratic White House. Don't expect any facts or insights. Even as a Republican, I found the humor to be cloying and self-congratulatory. My impression of this book is: what a complete waste of intellect and energy. It's a really bad reflection on the Republican party.

Decidedly unSwiftian Blunt-Edged Satire.......1999-05-06

I bought this book thinking it would be an insider's view of the 1994 Senate campaign in California, when Mike Huffington, Arianna's ex-husband, committed $26 million of his own millionaire money to try to defeat incumbent Dianne Fienstein. Huffington lost and his political career has gone nowhere since. Not only that, but he has come out of the closet and declared himself openly gay. And recently he admitted to a journalist that he was not the conservative he made himself (she -- Arianna -- made himself?) out to be, but was actually a liberal. I'd like to get the view from that bedroom! But instead this book is a tepid collection of tongue-in-cheek dull satire. One of these days Arianna Huffington, who is a good writer and is capable of being quite thoughtful, will tell us what it was like to stage-manage a gay liberal's campaign for senate on the Republican ticket. Well, maybe she won't tell us. But I, for one, would love to hear that story, and I'm sorry I bought the wrong book.

Surprisingly Clever.......1998-12-24

In her countless appearances on the msnbc and cnbc babble shows, Huffington usually comes across as a thick-accented foriegner with a simple-minded sense of humor and a deluded sense of patriotism. But in her book "tales from the Lincoln Bedroom", Huffington displays a surprising knack for sophisticated satire and her observations of the current political scene are telling. It is hard to believe that this thick-accented, English-as-a-second-language foriegner could have written such a clever piece of non-fiction on her own. The passages in which she makes fun of the physical appearance of administration members Robert Riech, Donna Shalala and Janet Reno are especially amusing. To add a sense of balance to the book, it would have been advisable to make fun of how she, herself, drove her ex-husband to homosexuality. But on the whole, I must say, Bravo, Arianna!

an amusing account of the Lincoln Bedroom.......1998-09-07

I'm Arianna's biggest fan. She has an acerbic wit and I couldn't put the book down. I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to read some humorous revelations about politics. I enjoy Arianna because she speaks her mind and isn't afraid to tell it like it is.

A Postcard View of Washington State History!.......2001-02-08

This 1988 collection of historical tinted postcards, assembled by a renowned local author and historian, was timed just right for the Washington State Centennial in 1989. It's now a collector's item for both Pacific Northwest history buffs and postcard collectors.

The sections, with only captions and brief comments by Lane Morgan, are named: "From Sea to Inland Sea," "Seattle," "West of the Mountains," "Cascades," "Inland Empire," "Farm and Forest," and "Celebrations."

Since the elementary school where I am a librarian is located in a community originally established for the logging industry, students are always fascinated to see size of the logs, and even the lumber cut from those logs, as well as log cabins, oxen on a skid road, and log jams in the rivers. They are amazed to see a family's home built out of a single tree stump around 1910!

Other fascinating postcards include the native people, both the coastal and the inland tribes. Granted, this is a nostalgic look at Washington State, with early camping and skiing on Mount Rainier, irrigated orchards in Wenatchee Valley, the beloved "Kalakala" ferry boat on Puget Sound, and historic buildings, including the "highest and finest and best known office building on the Pacific Coast," the Smith Tower in Seattle.

While it may not seem like "history" to me, I remember as a 12 year-old in 1962 collecting the postcards shown here from the Century 21 Exposition, better known as the Seattle World's Fair, with painted views of the Space Needle and the Monorail.

This is a fun book to have for lovers of local history and nostalgia. This is one of those books that proves the old proverb, "A picture is worth a thousand words." It would be nice to see it back in print, but I imagine someone will come out with a new, updated version...perhaps in time for our bi-centennial in 2089!

Fascinating non-political book on White House history.......2007-01-12

People my age were taught citizenship in school and were taught to respect the President. I have always been fascinated with the personal lives of the Presidents and the folklore of the White House. This book does not disappoint if you like the "behind the scenes" information on the White House and its past residents. I also recommend the one written for children by the same author. This puts politics aside and restores some pride in the institution of our Presidency and their families.

A Wonderful Resource........2006-03-01

Season's Greetings from the White House is an excellent source of presidential Christmas/holiday items from the early part of the twentieth century to the present. Each President's holiday greetings along with staff gifts are shown. Mrs. Seeley has written an superb book which continues to grow with each new edition. The quality of photographs and the amount of them in the book make it worth the price. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has an interest in not only presidential items, but for anyone who has any interest in the holiday season.

Rich in history and nostalgia .......2005-01-20

Mary Evans Seeley is an expert on Christmas celebrations in the White House. Several years ago, she decided to share her knowledge and research dealing with personal First Family recollections and the result is the wonderful book "Season's Greetings from the White House."

It is a book for historians, Americana fans, Christmas collectors and art lovers. More than just behind-the-scenes stories, this richly illustrated volume shows, in full color throughout, the actual cards, prints and other Presidential gifts of sterling silver, pewter, glass, wood and leather. Most of the gifts were designed for distribution to White House staffers.

Seeley, who resides in Tampa, Florida, shares with the reader, the personal experiences of the wide variety of artists whose works came to grace Presidential cards and gift prints. To bring in historical color, the author interviewed a number of First Ladies and children of First Families.

The book's frontispiece displays the magnificent Neapolitan Baroque crèche in the White House East Room in 1963. The photograph was selected by President and Mrs. Kennedy for their Christmas card scheduled to be sent in December. Less than 30 were personally signed by both the President and First Lady prior to their fateful Dallas trip. These dual-signed Christmas cards are among the rarest of all Presidential Christmas memorabilia.

The photos of Seeley's historical collection of White House Christmas cards offers an interesting glimpse of our nation's culture and its values through the years.

It's no matter if you look upon the book as a major scholarly effort or simply a beautiful insight into the traditions of our First Families, "Season's Greetings from the White House" makes an excellent gift for the holidays and is a wonderful reference book for historians who are seeking the human side of Christmas in the Presidential Mansion.
