The Rietveld Schröder House
Ida van Zijl , and Bertus Mulder Manufacturer: Princeton Architectural Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1568982127 |
Book Description
Schroder House, built in 1924 in Utrecht, the Netherlands, is the first and perhaps the most famous structure designed by revered de Stijl architect Gerrit Rietveld. A pilgrimage site for architects and historians, this small townhouse is considered the first truly modern residence. Its revolutionary open-plan layout provided an alternative to confining small rooms, its strip windows broke down the barrier between inside and outside, and its primary color scheme and shifting wall planes were symbols of its rupture with tradition. This title on the building's history presents a wealth of new information, including new photographs showing details uncovered in the recent restoration, archival images from when the house was built, and floor plans of each level of the house. It also contains material from the extensive archive amassed by the client, as well as information provided by Bertus Mulder, Rietveld's assistant at the time the house was built.Customer Reviews:

review of Mondrian - Structures in Space.......2000-05-13
The author places Mondrian's work within the context of the times it was made, discussing concurrent developments and how other artist's work was influential on Mondrian, and how his work in turn influenced other artists. Several illustrations reproduce the work of these other artists.
The text is both biographical and developmental, as the various periods of Mondrian's work are all discussed, from his earliest Hague school-influenced landscapes through his Cubist inspired works to his mature Neo-Plastic paintings.
The photographic reproductions are excellent, and the text is informative without being scholarly. For anyone needing an introduction to Mondrian's work and career, this is the book for you.

Towards Universality: Le Corbusier, Mies and De Stijl
Richard Padovan Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0419240306 |
Book Description
There is no shortage of books about Le Corbusier, or Mies van der Rohe, or De Stijl. This one is different, however, in a number of ways. First, it does not treat them as separate subjects, but in relation to each other. While their response to De Stijl throws some new light on Le Corbusier and Mies, it is above all De Stijl who can be defined in relation to them. Second, the purpose is to excavate the philosophical foundations of their work, rather than to merely describe and discuss the work itself. Third, Padovan looks for connections between the aims and ideals of the 1920s and such "post-modern" concerns as the creation of habitable "places" and the survival of the historical city.

The Artists of De Stijl: A Guide to the Literature (Art Reference Collection)
Donald Langmead Manufacturer: Greenwood Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0313305528 |
Book Description
This guide summarizes and evaluates the available literature concerning the Dutch artistic movement De Stijl, which was headed by art critic and painter Theo van Doesburg and was comprised of such architects and artists as J.J.P. Oud, Piet Mondrian, Rovbert van 't Hoff and Georges Vantongerloo. The loose-knit group took its name from the avant garde journal they first published in October 1917: De Stijl (The Style). Although it was limited to Holland, De Stijl promoted ideas about a universal art, combining tenets of theosophy, an holistic view of the oneness of all things, including arts and culture, and socialism. This bibliography examines publications that deal with the movement and with affiliated groups and individual members. Art historians and scholars of modern and of Dutch art and architecture will appreciate this comprehensive tool for further research. Within individual sections for the movement and for its members, entries are chronologically arranged with separate categories for books, monographs and catalogs, and periodicals. A final section analyzes and presents the contents of the journal De Stijl.

Interest Rate Modeling and the Risk Premiums in Interest Rate Swaps (The Research Foundation of AIMR and Blackwell Series in Finance)
Robert Brooks Manufacturer: Research Foundation of AIMR & Blackwell Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0943205387 |
Book Description
This monograph addresses the return side of the decision to use interest rate swaps or other interest-rate-contingent claims. Because the economic costs of decisions related to a company's policies toward debt maturities are important to stock price performance, the analysis in this monograph has practical implications for investment analysts. Brooks demonstrates how an at-the-market swap with a risk premium can have a significant impact on the expected return from using the swap.

Female Corporate Culture and the New South : Women in Business Between the World Wars (Garland Studies in the History of American Labor)
Carroll Gilliga Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Library Binding ASIN: 0815331843 |
Book Description
Before World War I, Southern women's participation in the workforce consisted of black women's domestic labor and white working-class women's industrial or manufacturing work, but after the war, Southern women flooded business offices as stenographers, typists, clerks, and bookkeepers. This book examines their experiences in the clerical workforce, using both traditional labor sources and exploring the cultural institutions that evolved from these women's work-related milieu.
Businessmen throughout the South molded this workforce to meet their needs using both labor-saving management techniques and exploiting social mores to enforce gender boundaries that limited women's workplace opportunities. This study traces the social and economic implications of Southern women's increased participation in clerical labor after World War I. While it increased the civic activities of white middle-class southern women, it also confined them to a routinized days work and limited venues of occupational achievement. Through a varied network of business women's clubs and organizations, women struggled with their new identities as workers and attempted to integrate their work lives with their community and family obligations.
