Book Description

translated by Graham Thompson

edited by Sarah Whiting

Differences brings together ten essays written over the past decade by the distinguished Spanish architect and theorist Ignasi de Solà-Morales. Many of the essays have never previously been translated, and the author has provided a new introduction especially for this English edition.

Contemplating the panorama of contemporary art and architecture, de Solà-Morales posits that there is no one way to describe today¹s practice; instead he concentrates on elucidating the present dynamic of contrast, diversity, and tension.

In an unorthodox pairing, de Solà-Morales derives his inspiration from both phenomenology and Deleuzean poststructuralism. Combining these philosophical inheritances allows him to reinvoke the human subject without referring to classical humanism or announcing the death of the object. His retrospective review of the disciplines of art and architecture, particularly as they have developed since World War II, provokes him to design, draft, and ultimately build a description of modernism¹s lineage of subjectivity. The result is a provocative construction of fluid "topographies" that articulate, rather than depict, the shaky ground on which our current artistic and architectural production rests.

The essays: Sado-masochism: Criticism and Architectural Practice. Topographies of Contemporary Architecture. Mies van der Rohe and Minimalism. Architecture and Existentialism. Weak Architecture. From Autonomy to Untimeliness. Place: Permanence or Production. Difference and Limit: Individualism in Contemporary Architecture. High-Tech: Functionalism or Rhetoric. The Work of Architecture in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction.

The mediocrity of thought culled in these essays is equal to the quality of the translation. De Sola-Morales was a fine architect and an important theorist. His death was a great loss to the community of minds that comprise our discipline. This collection is far from his best effort. Look elsewhere, particularly his essay in the 2G publication of the Barcelona Pavilion reconstruction which demonstrates the nimble intellect of a cultured man.

This collection of essays by Solà-Morales is a very good place to start if you want to understand contempory architectural thought in a wider perspective. Although the author has his own particular viewpoint and refers to the theory and practice of many different architects, artists and philosophers, he always has important points to make in each essay. The structure of the book as autonomous essays with themes which recur throughout the book enable an understanding which does not depend on rigorous knowledge of philosophical lines of thought. In this way the book provides a useful starting point for deeper inquiry into how the modernist project in all disciplines has fragmented. Solà-Morales is comprehensive and far-sighted in his acknowledgement of lines of thought and action such as the radical critique of the 60's and it's significance to architecture. The main premise of the book is a particular way of thinking with which Solà-Morales tries to place architectural works and thought. His enthusiastic reinterpretation of the work of Mies in 'Mies van der Rohe and Minimalism' is remarkable in it's clarity. I found his praise of the work of contempory architects such as Foster, a little too optimistic in relation to the current situation however (High tech, functionalism or rhetoric).

4 out of 5 stars a good way to see architecture........1998-08-24

Personally, I think that is a good book. Other readers may not buy what the writer thinks but I think that it is really good to know an opinion and to understand his argument. This book inspires me to rethinking about architecture in a deeper and alternative way and help me to know what I want to pursuit in the future. The writer comments on different styles of the contemporary architecture and he implies a new way of future architecture.

Okay this one is different. Very fantasy. I wanted to read because the thought of the guy being the horse and the sex was intriguing. Well it's not what you think. Lots of HOT sex, which is good! Small story but with feeling.

5 out of 5 stars An exciting, passionate read.......2005-12-04

Terra, an elite fighting carrier, dreams of the luscious Inez. He can't wait to meet his mate. Inez values her freedom. She doesn't want to be tied down to anyone, let alone a handsome horseman. These two strong characters collide with a passion that sizzles the pages.

A longtime fan of Kate Hill's work, Dream Stallion does not disappoint. She paints vivid characters with strong, realistic dreams and puts them against a backdrop filled with danger and intrigue. The fantasy setting comes to life with the threat of the Spikes and the characters in the village. This book provides a complete package, a setting, characters, passion, and plot. A page-turner this book is a must read. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

My only complaint? I don't think Linn gets his own story.

Most new parents don't think the first 12 months of parenthood is a laughing matter...till they read this collection of 101 cartoons by Lynn Johnston. There's something about sleepless nights and babbling days that seems a lot funnier in a cartoon book.

This is a very fuuny book. It makes you see the lighter side of parenthood. I laughed through and through. What makes it more appealing is that over 20 years later I have experienced the same things that Lynn Johnston wrote about then.

                                      Book Description

Ela Bhatt is widely recognized as one of the world's most remarkable pioneers and entrepreneurial forces in grassroots development. Known as the "gentle revolutionary," she has dedicated her life to improving the lives of India's poorest and most oppressed citizens. In India, where 93 percent of the labor force are self-employed, 94 percent of this sector are women. Yet self-employed women have historically enjoyed few legal protections or worker's rights. In fact, most are illiterate and subject to exploitation and harassment by moneylenders, employers, and officials. Witnessing the terrible conditions faced by women working as weavers, stitchers, cigarette rollers, and waste collectors, Ela Bhatt began helping these women to organize themselves. In 1972, Ela Bhatt founded the Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA) to bring poor women together and give them ways to fight for their rights and earn better livings. Three years after SEWA was founded, it had 7,000 members. Today it has a total membership of 700,000 women, making it the largest single primary trade union in India. Bhatt lead SEWA to form a cooperative bank in 1974 - with a share capital of $30,000 - that offered microcredit loans to help women save and become financially independent. Today the SEWA Cooperative Bank has $1.5 million in working capital and more than 30,000 depositors with a loan return rate of 94 percent. Through years of organization and strategic action, Ela Bhatt developed SEWA from a small, often ignored group into a powerful trade union and bank with allies around the world. During the last three decades, SEWA's efforts to increase the bargaining power, economic opportunities, health security, legal representation, and organizational abilities of Indian women have brought dramatic improvements to hundreds of thousands of lives and influenced similar initiatives around the globe. We Are Poor but So Many is a first-hand account of the vision, rise, and success of SEWA, in India as well as internationally. The book begins with a history of the early days of SEWA and an exploration of the Ghandian philosophy that helped shape SEWA's formation and vision. It follows with an account of the struggles and challenges that SEWA faced in its journey and describes how these were addressed and overcome. It then explores the freedom that SEWA has facilitated for women working in the informal economy by presenting several inspirational stories of individual SEWA members. The final chapter describes the international extension of SEWA's work, the challenges that women face in the informal economy worldwide, and how SEWA can be effectively replicated in other parts of the world. This volume is unique in that it will elaborate the specific experience and knowledge of Ela Bhatt in her and SEWA's journey and provide insights and knowledge that no outside researcher would ever be in a position to replicate.

                                          Book Description

"Sol Dollinger's remembrance of UAW's early days are juicy and provocative. His recall of those goofy internecine political battles within the union is tragic-comic. Yet they, united, even though hollering at each other, made GM, Ford, et al,recognize the union. The sequence involving Genora Johnson Dollinger, the heroine of the 1937 sit-down strike, is deeply moving and inspiring."

                                          --Studs Terkel

"Should be read by every labor person who takes the principles of trade union history seriously. . . . Brings the history of the UAW up for a new survey of the events to include the men and women who would otherwise be unsung heroes or written out of history totally."

--David YettawPresident, UAW Buick Local 599, 1987-1996

This story of the birth and infancy of the United Auto Workers, told by two participants, shows how the gains workers made were not easy or inevitable-not automatic-but required strategic and tactical sophistication as well as concerted action.

Sol Dollinger recounts how workers, especially activists on the political left, created an auto union and struggled with one another over what shape the union should take. In an oral history conducted by Susan Rosenthal, Genora Johnson Dollinger tells the gripping tale of her role in various struggles, both political and personal.

                                            Book Description

A seismic shift occurred inside the US trade union movement in October 1994 when the 'New Voice' campaign swept a new leadership into the AFL-CIO, the federation of American unions. Led by John Sweeney, the campaign forced the first democratic election for top officers in the history of the organisation. The new team, including Sweeney as President, Rich Trumka as Secretary-Treasurer, and Linda Chavaz-Thompson as Executive Vice-President, came to power promising changes from within. With the new leadership came a virtually complete recasting of the federation designed to meet the needs of working families in a changing economy and rebuild the most critical link in fighting for a more progressive and egalitarian America. The US union movement is making news again--from political action to organising, from challenging corporate power to building links with workers in an international arena. Yet, even with increased press attention and more public awareness of today's unions, the inside story of the new AFL-CIO hasn't been told before. In these pages the new programme of the federation is presented for the first time by those directly involved with its implementation. Not Your Father's Union Movement is an indispensable guide for anyone who is a union member or who cares about social change. The book also provides a useful introduction to today's unions for students, teachers and others. Among the topics discussed are programmes around organising, political action, women, immigrant workers, global strategy and international worker solidarity, and changing the union's image. Case studies of how labour won the strike against UPS, and the legislative fights to increase the minimum wage and defeat Fast Track Trade Authority, are also included. Contributors: Jo-Ann Mort, Harold Meyerson, Richard Bensinger, Karen Nussbaum, Steve Rosenthal, Kelly Candaele, Jerry Hudson, Amy Dean, Hector Figueroa, Barbara Shaillor, Guy Molyneux, David Kusnet, Mark Baldwin, David Glenn, Matt Witt, Rand Wilson, Juan Gonzalez and Noel Beasley.

5 out of 5 stars The Rebirth of the AFL-CIO.......2000-01-05

Jo-Ann Mort's book is a collection of articles about the changes that have been taking place in the new AFL-CIO. Under the leadership of John Sweeny and Linda Chevez-Thompson, the AFL-CIO has been reivigorated and has taken on many new project, such as "America Needs a Raise," a call for all Americans, Union or not to have a living wage and a rising standard of living. In prior years organized labor just tried to hold onto what it had, and saw its influence with the democratic party decline. But today's movement has focused on recruiting new members, and building membership in America's unions to secure a voice for all Americans. Many of the articles, such as "Part-time America Won't Work," which is about the 1997 UPS-Teamster's strike against the transitionto a part-time work force, are important to most people. Prior to 1995, it would have seen likely that organized labor would slip away. But today, with the new AFL-CIO's energy and issues that address the economic plight most American, seem to have momentum. Who would have thought of IBM employees trying to unionize fifteen years ago?

                                            5 out of 5 stars One great book - a real winner!.......1999-04-22

I have always been a huge fan of labor. I believe in the cause of the average guy. I am a proud pro-labor Democrat and a proud supporter of organized labor. I am a proud believer in the ideals behind the New Deal-Fair Deal-New Frontier-Great Society liberalism. I believe that government's job is to protect the weakest among us. Social and moral justice is a must. Thus, when I saw this book, I knew I would love it - and I did! This has labor's pro-worker political, economic and social agenda outlined clearly and concisely. Here you see what the working person in the U.S. needs - decent wages, good health care, education, training, a decent job atmosphere and a society which values families. Here you see the right wing's awful attack on labor through a cut buying power for the Minimum Wage, attacks on Medicare and Social Security and attacks on the right to collective bargaining. The fact is that, despite its often mentioned corruption from the leadership, labor remains one of the most credible sources for average political participation. Nowhere else can one who is honestly concerned about families find an organization or source which allows such participation politically and socially. Other groups - on left and right - do not allow this. The trial lawyers, health insurance groups, doctors associations, business groups and right wing anti-labor groups are all greedy bandits. The religious right manipulates persons and scares them. The civil rights organizations are the closest thing we have to labor groups. Yet, labor wins for labor is a group with an agenda which spans all parts of America. After all, who does not benefit from the right to join and strike with a legal union, universal health care, social investments in day care, education, jobs and training and family leave? Who does not win when the least among us get fed, clothed, housed and get a dignified job? The agenda outlined here is what we need in this right wing era. The U.S. desparately needs a health care system in which all have care. We need a rejuvinated public education system. We need fair labor laws. We need fair civil rights and equal protection laws. We need day care, family leave and a fair Minimum Wage. Full employment is still necessary. This book is great. For anybody who wants to find out where this country should be headed, this one is a true winner!
