this book assumes that you already know how to use scissors and glue. the rest is up to you! without giving heavy handed instruction, it lets kids (and adults) use their imagination to make what ever they like. the paper included is beautiful. in my mind, it's the whole reason for buying the book. you can make illustrations (collages) just like eric carle's. thanks to him for providing all his fans with this great pad of paper.
A Total Disappointment!.......2002-06-16
Don't bother with this book, you'll be disappointed. The only thing worth while about this are the few sheets of decorative tissue paper that come with it. I know nothing more about collage after reading this book then before I bought it. Do yourself a favor and DON'T waste your time or money on this. There are MUCH more informative books out there.
Not Just for Kids!.......2001-10-26
I was looking for a very elementary, how-to collage book for myself and this is a good one.
Because Carle wrote and stocked this book for children, it is very basic, but that was what I needed to get me over my fear of trying a collage of my own. His explanation of the format and process was very simple but very thorough. There are enough colors and designs of tissue papers to get anyone off to a good start in creating several different collages.
I think this would be a great gift for children and even for an adult who yearns to find the artist within!

When I put this book on my wish list months ago, I had never seen the book before. Now that I have the book, I can say that this is an excellent gift for a gradeschool aged child, and the tissue paper that it comes with is beautiful. As someone who loves the art of Eric Carle, I thought it was fun to work with paper similar to the materials that he uses in his art. The instructions are so easy, and with a touch of supervision, this book could easily turn a rainy day into a fun and creative project. This book would be especially good for those children who have read Eric Carle's picture books.

Beside instructions and illustrations on how to do a collage, the book also contains 72 printed tissue papers to make finished pictures that look enough like Eric Carle's work to please any child. My five year old was delighted with her projects.

He shows how the grouping of elements, the weight given to each and the way they're depicted influence how observers perceive them.
Part one is an introduction to emotional content. The three subsequent parts guide readers through the steps of Brommer's system:
1. Selecting elements: This section includes two in-depth demonstrations on the selection and editing process.
2. Sketching the scene: Quick one-minute sketches lay out possible groupings for the elements selected in the step above.
3. Using color to evoke emotion: Color's impact on mood, temperature, light, dominance of elements, and sense of place. Full-length demonstrations show how to use color to convey emotional content.
A balanced mix of instruction, in-progress illustrations and beautiful completed work make the concepts concrete for all levels of artists.

A very limited notion of emotional content.......2006-03-16
The title of this book is at least somewhat misleading, since Brommer uses such a narrow and arguably pedestrian notion of emotional content in painting. This is not to say that this book has no value, but it is much more of a how-to book than the title suggests. The focus of the book is really on painting technique, not emotional content. If you want to be challenged philosophically and creatively about infusing emotional content into your paintings (such as can be found in the emotionally expressive works of painters like Munch, Kollwitz, O'Keeffe, or Pollock, for example) then you'll need to look elsewhere. On the other hand, if you want to focus on how to represent landscapes, townscapes, seascapes, and other traditional painting subjects using watercolor alone or combined with Brommer's trademark collage approach, then you might find the book worthwhile (but much of the material here can be found in his earlier book on watercolor and collage).

This is one book which I enjoyed reading and putting it to practice. The title really explains it all. If you want pointers to use painting (and collage) to express your feelings and interpret it, see examples from other artists' works - this is the book for you. It's simplified so that it can reach the public (no fancy words). I really enjoyed this book and also his other books and videos like watercolor and collage etc. Gives me a good feeling that I can do it too.

I am not a watercolorist so don't go by me on this one. I would not recommend it for getting info on color and design for emotional impact in general, and not if you are using other mediums. However,I gave this book five stars because it seems to be good book for watercolor and collage for beginners; it has several generous watercolor and colleage how-to sections, and has some wonderful examples and photographs.

The second edition of Working Women in America: Split Dreams highlights current research on critical issues affecting American women in today's global workplace. It features updated information and examples, including extended discussions of women's activism within and outside of the workplace, the impact of globalization, the effects of the glass ceiling and sexual harassment, and women's roles in the U.S. labor movement. Retaining the focus of the first edition, this text emphasizes the continuity of women's work experience. It seeks to dispel the misconception that women's work is a recent phenomenon, when in fact women have been working throughout history. The book also addresses the constant tension and multiple roles that women must manage. The lives of working women are indeed characterized by "split dreams": most women who work are constantly juggling their work and family dreams. It is therefore misleading to concentrate solely on the workplace when seeking to understand women's position at work. Rather, one must pay attention to the connections among societal institutions. To this end, the authors argue for and utilize a structural approach-one that examines the ways in which the economy, education, the family, and the polity reflect and influence one another and help reinforce women's subordination. Only when these connections are brought to light is it possible to begin to formulate alternatives to conventional ideas concerning work, family, and gender roles. The authors begin by situating their research in opposition to dominant sociological models of work. They then provide a thorough historical overview of women at work, carefully examining the diversity of women's experiences by race, ethnicity, class, and age. Economic, legal, political, familial, and educational institutions are also analyzed to show the ways in which they help produce and maintain inequality for women in the workplace. Working Women in America: Split Dreams intersperses first-person accounts throughout the book and provides a number of vignettes of women employed in a variety of occupations. It is an ideal text for courses in women's studies, sociology, economics, social work, and history, and fascinating reading for anyone interested in women and their work.

The book focuses on the problems that face women everyday in the workplace. Whether one is actually referring to the labor force as the workplace, or the home as the workplace is a huge part of this book. Our society accepts that women should automatically take on the responsibilities of child care and housekeeping in addition to a regular job (if they wish to even have a job on top of all these tasks). It's not easy for women, and Hesse-Biber uses several examples and hard data to back up this book.
Not only is the "average, white American supermom" discusses, but also the differences in race, class, and other factors that can influence women's place in the "working world."
The book is very useful and Hesse-Biber always takes a strong feminist perspective. One fault would probably be that she doesn't show both sides as best she could, but overall, the book is an enjoyable one.
