Stone Walls Do Not a Prison Make.......2006-04-15

In 1949 the Federal Bureau of Prisons published Correctional Institution Design and Construction, a detailed "source book for planning and construction of institutions ranging in type from the small jail and short term detention facilities for juvenile delinquents to the maximum security type of institution." In the books introduction, James V. Bennett, the agency's director, wrote: "There are in the United States more than 300 state and Federal prisons, reformatories, and training schools. In addition, there are several thousand city and county jails and workhouses. This great diversity of institutions which house and handle convicted and accused criminals represents a tremendous investment in physical plants and human lives. Yet there is probably no other type of institutional construction in this country which has been devoid of intelligent planning and direction as has the construction of penal and correctional institutions."

Since the publication of that book more than five decades ago, the United States has witnessed a phenomenal growth in institutional construction and, by necessity, increased attention to prison architecture, thus addressing some of Bennett's concerns.

In 2000 Norman Johnston, Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Beaver College, provided the corrections profession a comprehensive and compelling history of the evolution of prison construction and design in Forms of Constraint: A History of Prison Architecture. In addition to its historical value, the book provides guidance for the design and construction of future prisons.

This is a scholarly, well-documented, and richly illustrated volume that represents a significant contribution to correctional literature. Norman Johnston's book adds value to the bodies of knowledge on prison history, institutional architecture, and the development of correctional policy.

Book Description

Excavations on the slopes of the Cittadella settlement at Morgantina in eastern Sicily have revealed nearly seventy tombs dating from the late eighth to the mid-fifth century B.C. In this volume, Claire Lyons presents a full publication of these Archaic cemeteries, examining the structure of the tombs, their rich range of grave furnishings, and the evidence for funerary ritual that they preserve. Often reused for multiple inhumation and cremation burials, these tombs provide significant documentation of the critical period when immigrant Greeks interacted with the substantial indigenous community, introducing foreign objects and practices that modified the local Iron Age funerary rite.

Detailed reconstructions of all of the burial contexts are presented in an illustrated catalog of the more than 1,350 artifacts found in the tombs. The author's close typological analysis of these grave goods--Attic, Corinthian, Lakonian, East Greek, colonial, and local pottery, as well as terracottas, jewelry, and metal objects--brings new evidence to bear on questions of chronology, production, trade, and function. A particularly intriguing chapter focuses on the meaning of the objects deposited with the dead in Archaic Morgantina, extracting from them information on class, social identity, gender, age, and ethnicity, as well as evidence for the process of transculturation that gradually transformed both the native and the colonial populations. The volume also contains an appendix on the human skeletal material, prepared by Marshall J. Becker.

Excavations conducted at Morgantina by Princeton University and the University of Illinois have revealed substantial Iron Age remains beneath the Greek town on the Cittadella hilltop. In this volume Robert Leighton presents a full study of this extensive protohistoric settlement in Sicily. The broad scope of evidence, particularly the survival of long houses and tombs with much of their structures and contents preserved, permits an unusually thorough examination of indigenous cultural traditions prior to the foundation of the Greek town in the Archaic period. An illustrated catalogue of the finds presents more than 700 artifacts from the site, most of which are previously unpublished.

The author discusses all the excavated protohistoric areas in detail, and presents a full range of maps, plans, excavation photographs, reconstruction drawings, and radiocarbon dates. The diverse body of finds includes a wide variety of pottery forms as well as tools and ornaments of both metal and stone that document local crafts, metallurgy, and numerous aspects of daily life. In studying these objects, Leighton draws on parallels with material from the Italian peninsula and considers the evidence of the historical sources, revealing links between Sicily and Italy in the protohistoric period.

The kilns at Morgantina, site of the well-known excavations in central Sicily, are an outstanding example of multiple potters' workshops in use during the late Hellenistic period. In fully documenting these ten kilns, excavated between 1955 and 1963, Ninina Cuomo di Caprio offers both a representative cross-section of the physical setting of ceramic production in this ancient Greek city and evidence for its daily industrial activity. She includes detailed plans and section drawings of each kiln and formulates hypotheses on its operation in light of modern thermodynamics. The text, which is in Italian, is preceded by an English-language summary. Cuomo di Caprio's archaeological study of the kiln structures and their ceramic products is supplemented by such diagnostic tools as thermoluminescence analysis, neutron activation analysis, X-ray diffraction, and optical examination by polarizing microscope. Opening an entirely new window into the everyday working practices of the Morgantina potters, this study demonstrates that they operated at a very sophisticated level: selecting and purifying specific clays, and adding certain materials to manipulate their working and firing characteristics.

This volume continues documenting the well-known excavations at Morgantina, a Greek town in central Sicily, in a presentation of the largest body of coins ever unearthed at an Italian site and published as a group. The excavations, conducted by Princeton University, The University of Illinois, and The University of Virginia between 1955 and 1981, produced nearly 10,000 identifiable coins--most of the them of Sicilian Greek and Roman issues, struck before the end of the first century B. C.. This numismatic evidence not only made possible the initial identification of the site as Morgantina, but has subsequently opened the way to reconstructing the history of early Roman Republican coinage and the bronze coinage of Greek Sicily. The catalogue presents a full list of the coins found at Morgantina through the 1981 season, with discussion of significant issues and illustrations of 679 specimens. A complete corpus and study of the coins struck at Morgantina is also included.

The most interesting thing that this book highlights is the "Policy Development Process." By allowing the reader to see how each branch of governemnt effects transportation policies, really gives the reader a better grasp on what they are reading. This book touches upon every aspect of transportation- environmental issues, safety, and economic issues that are important in everyday life. Another key idea that this book addresses is the list of Federal Government Transportation Agencies, Organizations, and Committees. By reading this book, one can gain better knowledge on policy development and the process that go along with it.

A Decently Written Book .......2007-06-06

I enjoyed reading this book.

The author went to great pains to cover this period in Minnesota's history. He disseminated the Minneapolis Citizens Alliance (CA) not so much in a chronological manner (he did that too) but in a way that allowed the reader to see the CA's multi-faceted and generational offensive against organized labor in Minneapolis.

Chapter 14 (A Network Of Spies) explained how the CA kept elaborate tabs on groups like the IWW, the Non-Partisan League and other radical elements AND shared this information with US military intelligence. Chapter 12 (Shaping The Hand Of Justice) showed how a well-financed CA helped elect, re-elect and influence judges sympathetic to labor injunctions and the open-shop stance. The author spent a great deal of time in explaining how the 1934 Teamsters Strike came about and how the effects of it led to the decline of the CA as a formidable organization.

With only a few exceptions where the author let his pro-labor sympathies slip out into the open, I found his research to be very well balanced, comprehensive and extensively documented. This was reassuring given the book's introduction was written by Peter Rachleff, a professor and left-wing labor activist.

If you're a fan of Minnesota (and Twin Cities) history or are a student of labor relations, I encourage you to read this book. You won't be disappointed.
