Good -- But Not Quite as Great as the 1st.......2002-04-02

The sequel to Whiteout finds US Deputy Marshal Carrie Stetko on vacation in New Zealand, but still stuck in professional exile in McMurdo Station in the South Pole. When a Russian base blows up suspiciously, her bosses promise to bring her back to civilization if she'll cut her vacation short to go poke around the debris. Although Article I of the Antarctic Treaty prohibits any military use of the continent, the Russians are suspected of using their base as a weapons cache and her bosses want her to see if she can find anything out. While the first volume was a suspenseful procedural, this is a more standard thriller with higher stakes. Soon, Stetko finds herself pursing a team of elite Spetznaz troops gone mercenary who are fleeing across the ice with stolen nukes. Upping the cliché factor, Stetko teams up with a Russian GRU agent to track the rogue Spetznaz and recover the nukes.The art is quite good, and the story is pretty absorbing and filled with tidbits about the South Pole, but isn't quite at the level of the original Whiteout.

Great follow-up to the original.......2000-10-19

Whiteout: Melt exceeded my expectations for a "sequel". It's a great story about Carrie; an U.S. Marshall assigned to the coldest territory on Earth. While it is a cold and gritty spy/crime story, there's actually a little romance for our female Marshall. Greg Rucka (Keeper, Finder, Batman: No Man's Land) again does not fail to turn up the heat in this mesmerizing tale of cloak-and-dagger against a tundra backdrop. Steve Lieber's black-and-white art accentuates the hard-boiled mood and sense of cold in this espionage thriller. Highly recommended for anybody who likes great crime fiction or action/adventure.

Solutions for Problem Sets.......2007-05-16

This solutions manual was useful for the problem sets that had been assigned. Some of the problems in the text are internet exercises, and that is all that is said, INTERNET EXERCISE, anwers will vary. The manual is prepared by someone other than the authors, but overall, the formulas and solutions make the text more easy to understand, then the text by itself.

Booklet costs far more than it is worth........1998-05-29

This booklet (not book) may contain some valuable information. It is, however, sparce and difficult to locate. There is no index so it it necessary to search pages and pages in the (often vain) hope of finding something useful. The price of $7.95 for a 60-page booklet is outrageous.

Manchester University Press, 2000.

In this excellent book, Vincentelli examines ceramics as practiced by women worldwide, including approaches to clay, gender roles, the effects of technology, social pressures and ways of collaborating. She states that "women's traditions are characterized by simple technology and a way of working the clay that keeps the maximum closeness between the hand and the material." Although women gained access to the wheel in the last century, she feels they are also in the forefront of the reaction against using it.

I thought of Judy Chicago's Dinner Party when I read Vincentelli's statement that"the hierarchy of the western division between art and craft serves to devalue what women do and associate men with art and women with craft". Perhaps a new perspective on the art versus craft controversy?

Women Potters by Moira Vincentelli
Rutgers University Press, 2004 .

A fine study of traditional pottery that documents with great photographs potters handbuilding and firing in many countries. There is much here to interest not only potters, but anthropologists, art historians, archeologists, and those in clay and art education. Maps of ceramic activity in major areas of the world by women and men, both handbuilding and wheelwork, are fascinating. In the introduction, Vincentelli states: "It was intriguing to find that women still represented a huge percentage of the world's potters: in four out of five traditional societies, pottery is a female task. But why did I not know this?" If you read her book, you'll begin to understand.

Methods of digging clay, forming, decorating, sealing and firing are described in detail, (I want to try sealing a pot with milk before pit firing to see if it will actuallly work. There are lots of other ideas!)
Problems are looked at squarely. Vincentelli documents the impressive pots and process of"Munchie" Roden" in Jamaica, while noting the difficulty of selling her work given her location in Spanish Town. Photographs show the abandonment of equipment unable to be maintained in certain locations, and researcher Margaret Tuckson is quoted on the disadvantages in some situations of introducing new technologies. Both recommend supporting the continuity and viability of existing methods.
Vincentelli has an optimistic attitude about the future, believing that ceramics will continue to thrive even as it changes, and that women will continue to make beautiful pots. Her book is, likewise, beautiful.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Grounding this study is the idea that the military constructs particular "norms" for its successful leaders and that these norms are officially and unofficially endorsed throughout a military officer's career. Specifically, the Air Force discursively constructs its ideal service member as a white, athletic, heterosexual, Christian male. Military texts that emphasize this norm (particularly the heterosexual and Christian aspects) conflate notions of national protection with levels of masculine prowess. Therefore, by gendered default, such discursive representations diminish women or entirely exclude them from the ultimate leadership scenario war. Narratives from the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) in Colorado Springs, Colorado, are the main evidence for this claim. As an institution invested in the fashioning of officers and their careers, USAFA's narratives play a crucial role in understanding how the military constructs gender. Taken alone, these narratives speak primarily to a military culture; yet, when they are considered along with representations of military women in relatively contemporary films, the military's gendered constructions also reach a non-military audience. Beyond USAFA and film contexts this study turns to military figures whose auto/biographies peak national interest because they either blatantly support the acceptable norms or flagrantly disrupt them. This study, then, is a cultural reading of a variety of military narratives and how these narratives position women for leadership roles.
