4 out of 5 stars Escape into the pages!.......2002-02-09

This book takes to over twenty residences in a variety of settings. The author has divided them into five categories: rural, waterside, mountain and hillside, woodland and urban escapes. Each residence is shown with several luscious photographs and accompanied by copy describing various aspects of the owners idea of an escape, details of the restoration or building and descriptions of the residence itself. My one complaint was that it seemed a bit uneven with regard to depth of coverage given to each residence. The layout includes larger photos with lots of thumbnail photos, making it a jam-packed feast for the eyes without being busy. The photos are so lovely you can almost fall into the pages in a dream

5 out of 5 stars Stunning and visually pleasing to every eye!.......2000-12-02

GREAT coffee table book, or just to look through and DREAM of being able to "escape" to one of these havens. The photographs are so full of detail you can practically feel yourself sinking into the pillows.

Helpful information with each entry as well; all in all, very well worth the cost...

          Considered a cult classic (at least that's what it says on the back cover) from the artist who went on to write and draw the highly praised Why I Hate Saturn, The Cowboy Wally Show consists of four chapters. "The Cowboy Wally Legend" is our introduction to this overblown mockery of a film star; "Sands of Blood" and "The Making of Hamlet" are two crazy attempts at film; and "Cowboy Wally's Late Night Celebrity Showdown" is his final moment of television glory. This will appeal to fans of trashy television talk shows.

          4 out of 5 stars It's a rootin', tootin', raucous riot of show biz revelry!.......2007-02-10

          This was the first graphic novel created by Kyle Baker. It takes the form of a documentary about the fictional "fat, loud and stupid" TV star Cowboy Wally. A journalist is interviewing Cowboy Wally about his life, and clips of "highlights" from his less-than-illustrious career are shown. He was in many shows that were cancelled after about two weeks. Probably the true highlights of his career (and also of the graphic novel) are a French Foreign Legion film and a ultra-low budget version of Hamlet. This is a funny comic book, which shows that Kyle Baker had talent even at the beginning of his career.

          3 out of 5 stars Not so great Kyle Baker........2004-02-10

          The Cowboy Wally Show was a departure from what I've read from Mr. Baker. Very dry and tounge in cheek humour, which I am usually a fan of, didn't really get me here. The art is up to scratch for Kyle Baker, but the story seemed to plod on for me, with jokes that made me laugh few and far between. If you are at all interested in Mr. Baker's work, I suggest Undercover Genie. Still this book is worth a read, and you will be supporting a very fine talent in our time.

          4 out of 5 stars "Stupid ? I don't know the meaning of the word !".......2001-12-22

          Another one of Kyle Bakers self-contained Graphic Novels, aiming for fans of sarcastic/ironic humor of which there is plenty. Baker likes to secretly criticize and mock everyday society by filling his stories with fictional characters and than make them act (exaggerated, but still) like real persons we see everyday. This is another good example of it.

          This is the fictional life-story, brought as a documentary with many flashbacks, of Cowboy Wally. All the way from when his B-career started up till today. Cowboy Wally is a guy who's big, loud and stupid and who got into show-business (and moves around in it) by `questionable methods' to say the least. That doesn't stop him from bragging about his achievements though (he IS his biggest fan), meanwhile emphasizing "how normal he maintained to be for a star of his caliber'. The reader gets to witness him making really really really cheap movies, him exploiting people who trust him and even ruining Shakespeare's `Hamlet'.

          A pretty funny book (especially the last part where it all comes together and the past catches up on Wally) about a fictional TV-character, which satirically mocks real-life TV-personalities. Like in all Baker's books the humor is often very subtle though. The art is pure black-and-white (without tones of gray like in the same author's `Why I Hate Saturn'). It's nicely detailed and doesn't suffer from the lack of color though. It's comparable to Terry Moore's art in `Strangers in Paradise'.
          Although it's pretty good overall I feel it could have been better with lesser segments in it, but paying more attention to the segments which remained. It looks a little cramped now, as if Baker didn't have as much pages as he really wanted to tell the tale. Nonetheless, for fans of satirical/sarcastic humor this is a good choice AFTER you've read `Why I Hate Saturn', his better book.

          5 out of 5 stars The Man, The Myth, The Legend....COWBOY WALLY!!.......2001-10-02

          The Cowboy Wally Show presents the "Mockumentary" retrospective of the stellar career of TV "Legend" Cowboy Wally. The book unfolds like a real documentary- We get the "Candid Interview" first, followed by a rare screening of his French Foreign Legion epic "Sands of Blood", and, for the finale, a gut-busting screening, (as well as a behind-the-scenes glimpse), of the jail-house retelling of Hamlet, complete with a drag-queen Ophelia, and paper cut-outs filling in for actors. If you don't laugh at the prison scenes ("Hamlet......it's a nickname my mom calls me....") you must be dead. Kyle Baker is a genius!

          5 out of 5 stars Absolutely hysterical.......2000-07-30

          This is, beyond a doubt, the single funniest graphic novel ever written.

                  Book Description

                  The liberalization of capital movements has deeply affected the IMF's business. Crises occur with more violence and leave deeper scars. The Fund has mobilized ever larger rescue packages and yet it has often failed to achieve its stated aims. Does this mean that the IMF must transform itself, or even as has been suggested, that it has become useless? The new world economy still needs a Fund, but many of its practices must be rethought and its role redefined. Its traditional views of exchange rate regimes and the desirability of unfettered capital mobility no longer correspond to the situation of many developing countries. Its mode of intervention needs to recognize that "21st century crises" differ fundamentally from those that dominated during its first fifty years of existence. The continuous blurring of roles between the IMF and the World Bank is fraught with dangers; both institutions must redefine their functions. The answer is not an international lender of last resort. This report presents a detailed proposal for a new IMF, insisting on accountability and governance.

                                  Book Description

                                  Although all are agreed that current commercial realities dramatically affect the duties owed by directors to their companies, there is as yet no consensus on what, if anything, should be done about it. Some urge reform, or at least modification, while others insist that the traditional standard which may be expressed generally as `such care as is reasonably expected, having regard to the director's knowledge and experience' -- has the great merit of flexibility. In an initiative aimed at clearing this impasse, the English and Scottish Law Commissions have proposed a statutory formulation, on the grounds that this would at least bring more certainty and clarity to the applicable standards.

                                  This important book delves into the issues surrounding this debate, presenting the arguments for and against a statutory statement, with in-depth analysis of the various degrees of reform that could be brought to bear on the issue. The author approaches the subject in a variety of revealing ways:
                                  + through a historical survey of standards in the United Kingdom, especially as developed through case law;
                                  + through a comparative analysis with two civil law jurisdictions (France and Germany) and two other common law jurisdictions (Australia and the United States);
                                  + through a doctrinal analysis derived from the extensive literature on the subject, especially concerning the relevance of the law of trusts and the tort of negligence; and
                                  + through an analysis of recent UK legislative developments, particularly Section 214 of the Insolvency Act 1986 and the Company Directors Disqualification Act 1986. Practitioners and academics in company law, as well as thoughtful business people, will appreciate the depth and clarity of this analysis. Its clear-headed elucidation of a contentious issue is sure to move this important matter forward toward a timely and needed formulation, statutory or otherwise.

                                    This is a good reference book. It offers basic information on business writing, and has many templates for various business situations. Would recommend it highly, especially to somebody starting a first job.

                                    I purchased this ebook online and agree with the previous people who were dissappointed with it. I was pretty upset to find that the letters were not very professional at all. They indeed would be ok for a quick note but other than that i dont see any use for it. I needed help with a bid proposal and was shocked to find that the letter was a one page three paragraph letter. It was not at all professional and would definately not win me a bid. And last but not least, you couldnt even copy and paste text because the text is not text. Its scanned and therefore you cant copy and paste into a word doc. I just wasted $.. for nothing. Oh well a lesson learned.

                                    2 out of 5 stars I sent this one back!.......2001-06-29

                                    I was extremely looking forward to recieving this book in the mail. All of the reviews stated that this book was excellent for the busines writer. I, on the other hand completely diagree. I work in a professional atmosphere and need a book that will emulate the professionalism of the company in which I am employed. The author has geared this book towards people with absolutely no writting skills what so ever. The sample letters that are supposedly consice and right to the point are so simple that a child could have written them. Going through this book I saw letter after letter that contained on average three sentences for the whole content of the example letters used. I understand that letters that get right to the point are the most effective, however I was hoping for many examples of a certain type of letter than just one for each subject. The author wrote each letter using a made up business with certain characterists and stated that one could rewrite the letter to fit the characteristics for their own busines. In order to do this, one would have to completely rewrite the whole letter. What is the point of spending money on this book to just have to write your own letter anyway?

                                    1 out of 5 stars I SENT THIS ONE BACK-.......2001-06-28

                                    I ordered The McGraw-Hill Handbook in hopes that this was finally the book that would be approprite for the business professional. This book contains sample business letters that were so simple, a child could have written this book. The sample letters were on average three sentences long, which can be useful if you are informing someone of a schedule change or a quick thank you note. However,when you have much to cover in a letter or want to be absoultely clear on how to put a delicate subject the right way as to not offend someone, this book then becomes no longer useful. The author stated that the letters are based on real life scenarios which in fact is true. Anyone in a business atmosphere will need to write letters that thank the client for some reason or request a meeting with someone regarding business. However, the examples that she uses are targeted so precisily to the type of business that she made up that if anyone trying to use their own business in the letter, would no longer have an example to go by. This book was extremely disappointing. So dissapointing in fact that I will never buy another book from this author again.

                                                    Book Description

                                                    This book examines the struggle of unions and communities to save jobs in plant-closing situations in the 1980s. The unusual depth of the research allows the reader to grasp the key factors affecting such battles in an era of industrial restructuring. It contains new insights into "early warning" signs, their recognition and importance; the role of labor-management relations in both shutdown decisions and efforts to save the plant; the importance of corporate structure and strategy; the part played by economic market factors; and the role of local government, both potential and actual. The book concludes with an analysis of the current trends affecting labor-community activism of this type.

                                                    .......1996-09-16

                                                    Bruce puts the struggles in common terms. So many of this type are academic in nature.

                                                    Keep looking for the "alternatives", Mr. Nissen, as many of these classic labor situations (factories etc.) are gone for good. What can people do to survive, hopefully more healthfully, in America's post-industrial society? New models that take the ecology totally into account are equally important. Keep up the good work........
