Profiling more than 30 houses constructed on especially tricky sites, this book is a highly practical and instructive sourcebook following each step of the design and construction process. Projects include everything from cliffside homes that seem to hover in thin air and houses set on dramatically sloped plots to tiny, oddly shaped plots. A particular emphasis is placed on the engineering techniques, construction processes, and materials employed to pull off these architectural acrobatics.
Arian Mostaedi is a successful architect who has authored more than 20 books, including The American House Today (8489861374).

Difficult sites makes for not pretty sights.......2005-11-22
I found this book disappointing. Homes from all over the world are illustrated. I live in the US and am considering building a house on a difficult site. This book did not help much in designing a home.
First, almost all the homes are ultra-contemporary inside and out, and do not look all that inviting to view or live in. Many of the homes are shown from a distance and you can see neighboring homes. If someone built one of the homes featured in the book next to me, I would be very angry at the architect for designing a house that so clashes with the neiborghood home styles. I got the impression that these homes are good to look out FROM, but those looking AT these homes would not be as equally impressed.
The book has many colored pictures and a few good drawings. There are lots of crossectional views but little discussion of how the homes were built. You are lucky to get 3 paragraphs of written text on each home. This book may be fine for the coffee table, but not very useful in understanding the house beneath the table.

Misleading Title.......2006-04-17
This is an out-of-print book that I paid a small fortune for. There is very little out there on the topic of desiging and building a house on a difficult site. Regrettably, I have now discovered the title of this book is extremely misleading. Nearly all of the houses shown are built on large level pads (!?!). A few are partly constructed on the gentlest of slopes. None of the project locations shown here would remotely qualify as a "difficult site" in California. There are no "zero-lot-line" lots, no real hillside lots. Nothing. Further, all of the home plans (except one) are for highly conventional and rather unimaginative traditional designs, similar to those found on numerous house plan websites. What a letdown. If one of these books becomes available, don't be tempted.

Huge but good.......2002-02-24
This was the text for a class in Primitivism in Modern Art. It is a detailed chronicle of how "Primitive" art influenced the artists of the early 20th century, such as Picasso and Gaughin. It has great pictures showing primitive art that these artists saw in museums at the time, that influenced paintings directly. Beautiful to just have.

Best Map Around.......2002-02-06
This map is great if you are going to be using the T system to get around Boston

I recently used this guide for a week trip to boston. I am relatively familiar with the city, but this guide made it much easier to navigate. the maps folded out to show Boston in an easy way to understand. The actual text was concise and accurate, as far as I could tell. It gave just the right information that I needed for my trip, such as places to eat, where to see movies, how to get to each place and phone numbers. I used it many many times a day and learned a lot more about the city than i would have, had i explored solely on my own. I highly recommend this guide to anyone who will ever spend time in Boston and hates the big books that give you too much information. The only thing lacking was a guide to art galleries.

As a map/guide from Harvard University's Let's Go staff, who are located across the Charles River from Boston, in Cambridge, MA, you'd think that turning out an accurate map and list of sites for their home city would be a piece of cake- however it's first edition was filled with innacuracies, including map errors- an eggregious sin for any travel guide. I have not seen this '98 reprint, I hope that it has been corrected!!! As someone who went to university in Boston and worked in a bookstore frequented by visitors, I was pleased to be able to recommend two map guides that are far superior to this- both by the Professor Pathfinder company. One covers the Harvard University and Environs, and the other covers the MIT campus and Back Bay area, the two hot spots for tourists in Boston. It is accurate and gives extremely detailed maps of neighborhoods, incl. shop names and similar information, which is a great navigational help.

Alternative growth accounting methodologies were used to measure the contributions of the sources of growth to GDP growth during 1960-2002. This paper examines the theoretical foundations for macroeconomic policy coordination and the related empirical findings in Latin America, contributing an original analysis that advocates new dialogue mechanisms to facilitate coordination in this region. The theoretical survey is concerned with non-cooperative coordination games, including dynamic games and those with imperfect information. The practical value of these game-theoretic tools is illustrated using economic examples. One important result is that implementing different forms of dialogue in specific situations can help to reach a coordinated outcome with benefits across the board.

Don't buy furniture without this book........2007-10-19
I've bought this book twice - it's a must have before you shop for furniture. You save so much money the book really doesn't cost you anything. It will make you an informed shopper when buying furniture. Kimberly tells you what brands are sold where, and the discount you can expect. Information on stores to visit, stores to just call in your order, or stores to avoid are given - saving both time and money. Four years ago I wanted a sofa from a not so well known manufacturer and this book gave the info on the one place that carried that brand. I saved so much time and money, and knew what to expect when buying.
She also has a website referenced in the book that provides the lastest updates to the book, as well as comparing some prices, and lots of other great information. There is also very helpful information regarding purchasing fabrics for decorating.

Have not actually travelled to NC yet, but plan to in October. This book is very helpful in planning the trip and deciding where to go. It's exactly what the description is and I'm sure will be very useful.
Bought the book, made the trip to NC.......2005-05-23
I stumbled across Causey's book on a North Carolina furniture discounter's web site. My husband and I made the trip from Portland, OR, for less than $400 with all of our frequent flier miles and Marriott Reward points. We loved the people and had a blast! Causey's book was instrumental in helping to plan the trip. It reduced the number of stores we visited significantly, and we were able to trust in the discounters that we visited. Here's my advice:
1. If you don't know exactly what you want (ex: style of bedroom set), get the book and make the trip. We went to the After Market Sale in early May and just about everyone had a big sale. I can't understate the value of seeing so many pieces within a short time. We were able to quickly develop preferences for which styles, manufactures, and colors would work in our home. Our favorite place was the Hickory Furniture Mart - a great experience for those buying mid- to high-end furniture.
2. If you already know exactly what manufacturer and collection you want (maybe you've seen something in your home town), get the book and call all of the listed discounters for quotes. The book has an index by manufacturer, so it's really simple and will pay for itself in the time you save. There are tons of discounters, so the book is needed to weed through the masses.

At the end of the day, the trip was well worth it. We found a perfect dining room set and bedroom set to meet our needs. We ended up buying Thomasville furniture due to their very unique, warm, and rich Cognac stain (fantastic sales team at the Hickory Furniture Mart: ask for Shana Bretzius and Randy Huffman). Seeing all of these pieces in person, we thought Thomasville was a clear standout.
We are ecstatic and couldn't have found such perfect furniture for us without making the trip. We also validated that in all cases, the DirectBuy prices are lower than the NC discounters, even when including the After Market Sales. Unfortunately for us, DirectBuy doesn't carry Thomasville (due to Thomasville's minimum retail pricing policy), and we decided the Thomasville furniture was the perfect fit for us. We did, however, get the minimum pricing + free shipping + free white glove delivery (they carry it in and set it up) to Portland, OR. And, a much better deal than our local stores!
Saved thousands of dollars.......2004-01-20
I purchased a house recently and decided to replace almost all my furniture. I bought The Furniture Factory Outlet Guide for assistance. I saved literally over $10,000 using this book. My one recommendation to use this guide is to shop your local furniture stores, get the furniture manufacturer's name, the group name and/or number of the pieces you like. Then use the guide to call the stores listed in the guide that carry the furniture manufacturer you're looking for, and price shop, one against the other for the best deals. You really don't even have to go to NC, unless you want to spend a couple days looking and figuring out what furniture you like. Then go home and call the stores in this guide. Good luck and happy shopping.
