Harold II is chiefly remembered today, perhaps unfairly, for the brevity of his reign and his death at the Battle of Hastings. The papers collected here seek to shed new light on the man and his milieu before and after that climax. They explore the long career and the dynastic network behind Harold Godwinesson's accession on the death of King Edward the Confessor in January 1066, looking in particular at the important questions as to whether Harold's kingship was opportunist or long-planned; a usurpation or a legitimate succession in terms of his Anglo-Scandinavian kinships? They also examine the posthumous legends that Harold survived Hastings and lived on as a religious recluse. The essays in the second part of the volume focus on the Bayeux Tapestry, bringing out the small details which would have resonated significantly for contemporary audiences, both Norman and English, to suggest how they judged Harold and the other players in the succession drama of 1066. The principal architectural features and ornament of the 267 Anglo-Saxon churches surveyed in Volumes I and II form Dr Taylor’s raw material. Four introductory chapters establish from first principles the logical basis for believing that these churches do indeed contain pre-Norman fabric. Individual elements like towers, arches, doorways, windows and capital decoration are then examined in detail. Comparisons are drawn wherever possible with contemporary continental practice and deductions are made about the reasons for important architectural features and the extent to which they had their origins in the requirements of monastic communities or the liturgy. The format of the hard cover edition has been reduced to match that of the paperback editions of Volumes I and II, (published in 1980).

I read several reviews about beginning cartooning books for my 7-year-old son and ended up purchasing this book and he loves it. I would recommend this book for any child who has an interest in cartooning.

Award-winning book a real hit with kids.......2001-10-30

I got this book for my son because it won the 2002 Oppenheimer Toy Portfolio Best Book Gold Award. For those who don't know, this is from a company that rates children's toys and books by how popular they are with the kids themselves. Anyway, this impressive book is a big hit with my son. He has practically worn it out, and goes to work on his cartoons right after his homework is done. I really can't believe the progress he has made. It's as if he has a private tutor! I got another copy of the book for his school's library, and they say it's now the most popular book there. Whatever Mr. Mayne is saying to these kids about cartooning, it's just what they want to hear. I recommend this book heartily!

Cartoons for the rest of us.......2001-10-20

Every kid, young or old, that has ever wanted to draw a cartoon has struggled with the elements of style. Anyone who has looked closely at Calvin and Hobbes, Doonesbury, or Peanuts can see that the drawings are deceptive; they seems simple, but are very complex graphically. At last, here's a book that shows the craft of cartooning in an utterly unassuming way. This book breaks down drawing cartoons to there barest elements, and by building on these elements, new artists can put together cartoons that can totally amaze. The tone is so conversational (and tongue in cheek) that the reader gets the feeling that Mr. Mayne is at their elbow, helping them to laugh at their mistakes and cherish their successes. The book refuses to take itself too seriously, at one point stating that cartoon characters routinely have four fingers because "Cartoonists are basically lazy." Although it at no point hypes itself as the "ultimate cartoon book for beginners", it is exactly that.

Delightful entertainment!.......2001-10-11

I purchased this book for my seven year old son, Benjamin. He loves cartoons, especially Captain Underpants, and wanted to see if he could draw his own. He didn't think he could draw well but after looking at the well laid out examples in the book, he came up with Super Embarrassed Man. He was really pleased with himself and now includes cartoonist on his list of things he'd like to be when he grows up.

Didn't Know Cartoons Were So Fun to Draw!.......2001-01-21

My mom has bought me a lot of cartooning books, because cartoons are my hobby. My favorite is this one, because it is like a cartoon strip itself and it also helped me learn to draw good cartoons! It has funny pictures in it that I learned to draw and then I made up my own cartoon character. I bought one for my little brother for Christmas, too, and he loves it just as much as I do!

Very well written.......2006-01-11

Coming into the Cost Analysis class, I was not the biggest fan of engineering economy. This book, however, was very well written and very straight forward. I took this class at a graduate level, and felt it might be more appropriate at an undergraduate level. The concepts are very basic, and though it gets into more difficult problems near the end, the book does a good job of walking the reader through problems step-by-step. It also gives several good examples, though they are not as thorough in the last few chapters.

Overall, kudos to the author for making the subject comprehensible and interesting.

For some, current developments are the result of new human resource management techniques which have overcome adversarial workplace traditions. Workers continue to place little trust in management, inefficient working practices persist, and attempts to build 'new industrial relations' have fallen short of the mark. Willing slaves? concludes by arguing that the best way forward is for organisations to commit themselves to long term labour relations policies which enable workers to participate in management decision-making.
