Particularly good for Santa Fe style details but has material appropriate for Territorial style as well, which makes it a good companion for "American Adobes" by Beverley Spears. Should not be criticized for lack of plans, as the title makes clear that this is a book strictly about details.

Here's the major pluses of this book, one worth adding to a bookshelf on New Mexican style:
1. Photos of authentic architectural details, many of them now gone or extinct, making this a valuable resource - and one that should be even more valuable in years to come.
2. An opportunity to see the interiors of several old and historic Santa Fe homes, with close-ups of such details as the fireplaces, tin and iron fixtures , doors, gates, window treatments, corbels, etc.
3. Historical information which provides added insight and perspective
All of the above is more than enough to warrant a place on my bookshelf. Now, a few words about what this book is NOT: if you are looking for architectural layouts of homes, complete with specs, etc...this book is not what you want. But if you want a close look at the fine details that can make or break authentic New Mexican style- details such as Corbels, Portal Posts, Doors, Windows, alacenas, Railings, gates and mailboxes- this would be a wonderful addition to your library.

This book was very reader friendly and would be great for someone that doesnt know alot about cats. Its short and basic. There is a chapter on why cats hiss and the authur advised that cats hissed because they were trying to sounds like a snake since most animals fear snakes. Thats alittle hard to belive... thats like saying dogs growl because theyre trying to sounds like a bear or something. Dont buy that to much but the rest of the book was good.

This great little book will make a wonderful gift for any cat lover! It provides answers to those little nagging questions that cat lovers have - like why do cats purr and where does that purr come from anyway. It is a small book, well written, and a treasure for the price.
A troubleshoot book on cats.......2005-09-26
I found this book on vacation in a book store and my boyfriend and I have read it several times. We finally understand more about our cats and why they do what they do. Why my girl cat every once and a while goes crazy running around the house making a barking noise. Cats are definitely a strange animal...an animal that takes time to understand...if you ever can.

"Why Do Cats Do That" is an informative book. It tells why cats do the things they do! For instance, why their eyes glow, why they purr, why the flop down on their sides when they are happy...and so on. However, this book is a bit on the dull side, and not one to really get into.

I used to raise kittens for a local shelter, and I was amazed at how perfectly the illustrations in this book capture the essence of kitten-hood--without being stiff or overly artsy. The story is simple and sweet, and fun to read aloud.

The most beautiful cats.......2005-04-03
I was given this book many years ago, but have discovered it anew since we started reading it to our toddler son. The story is really too complicated for him, but he is entranced by the beautiful cats. Their eyes, in particular, are mesmerising. We revel in the clever rhymes (how often does "verisimultide" appear in verse I wonder?) and can imagine this book becoming a family favourite. What a pity that it's out of print!

Any cat lover will treasure this book. It's a combination of beautiful cat illustrations (which are really almost portraits) and tongue-in-cheek poetry that captures the nuances of personality with which all cat owners are familiar. My fiancee and I have had fun writing Leman-esque poetry about our own cats, inspired, of course, by this book.

This book was and still is my favorite children's book........1998-10-15
I don't think I can fully discribe how much I *love* this book. It is a precious story about a little kitten's discovery about the world around her. I could almost repeat the book word for word. The over all theme of the book is that some times you get into a lot of trouble being curious (like falling into a pond trying to figure out what a fish is), but sometimes it's very good (like finding a new friend). This has to be one of the greatest childern's books. My copy is very old and ragged from many years of use, and I'm trying to get a new one.

Lynne Berry, The Curious Demise of a Contrary Cat (Simon and Schuster, 2006)
There are good kids' books, and there are good kids' books. Lynne Berry writes good kids' books, the kind that will both entertain the little ones and fill their adults with a kind of twisted glee that such things with the power to warp and traumatize young minds exist.
Witch decides to have a party, and she wants Cat to help her with various tasks. Cat, of course, is contrary (drat that cat!), and gets more and more aggressively annoying as the story goes on until... well, I read Lynne Berry's first kids' book, Duck Skates, after reading this one. My wife was confused at my disappointed look, and even more so when I said, "well, jeez, no one gets turned into a frog in this one!"
Berry has crafted a minor gem here, telling a story in a pattern of verse that gets surprisingly complex (for a book aimed at the preschool set, anyway) at times, and managing to pack an actual rich, multi-layered story into a very few pages. As good as Berry's lovely verse-- maybe even better-- is Luke LaMarca's gift for illustration. The pictures in the book go so well with the text that it's hard to believe two people were responsible for this tome. It's a grand pairing, and I hope it continues long into the future. ****
A perfect story to spark a child's imagination.......2006-08-11
Like Robert McCloskey and Ludwig Bemelmans, Lynne Berry has the rare gift of packing a real story - fully realized plot, engaging characters, and nary a lecture in sight - into just a few hundred words. Contrary Cat does all this in a style that's a pleasure to read aloud (something those of us who're required to read the same book 7 times a day understand is no small selling point). This is a fun story whose characters are spot-on; you will immediately feel you know this cat.
And Luke LaMarca's illustrations are perfect. This is one of those books I'd consider buying an extra copy of, just to take out some pages and frame them. There aren't many illustrators whose books I would buy regardless of the writer, but if he keeps this up, he'll surely become one of them.

Cutest book ever!.......2007-01-29
My daughter (4.5) checked this book out from her school library. She was actually able to read most of the words herself. I helped her with the rest, and now she has it completely memorized. It's a great book for beginning readers because it doesn't have a lot of words on each page, but it's much more interesting than "the dog ran..." The pictures are wonderful and the little story is precious. My youngest daughter even asks me to read it to her, and she is not a "booky" person like her big sis! Sadly, we have to return the book tomorrow. I definitely recommend this book! Hopefully, her library will have Volkmann's puppy book too!
Great Book - What Fun!.......2001-04-11
The pictures in this book are so adorable! And the story is equally charming. The kittens watch a goldfish and trying to decide if they can swim too. How Mr. Volkmann got these kittens to pose in some of these pictures is a mystery to me. I highly recommend this book for children learning to read (my daughter is about to turn four) and for younger children who you read to.

You should but this Book!.......2003-12-23
Not many characters are tougher then Judge Dredd. He enforces the Law in Mega-City One. But there is a new Cheif Justice, and he treat the law as a joke. He passes insane laws that can not be followed. There is a lot of humor, the best of which involves Cal's selection of Deputy. There are great battles and great characters. The only one I did not like was Fergie. It is a crime to not buy this book, and you don't want Judge Dredd to think you are a criminal!

Frankly, I'm embarassed for the authors. I have the second edition, and it is rife with errors. It just illustrates what a PhD is worth these days. I held out hope that the enclosed CD would have a spreadsheet of value (as it implies in the text) but all that is included is the book in PDF format. Thanks guys, that's helpful! Your next book should be titled "How to lie on the cover about the contents".
I just don't know at whom they are targeting this book. Too basic for anyone in finance with a semester of accounting under his/her belt, maybe it's for kids in high school in Junior Achievement? People running Kool Aide stands?
I think we all know the market -- their students who are hosed into buying it. Click another link to get away from this book as fast as you can, so my suffering is for a purpose.
almost worthless.......2000-09-26
This book is practically useless for anybody who actually needs to do financial analysis and forecasting at work. 90% of us use spreadsheets for financial analysis and forecasting, and we end up working with complex spreadsheets which tie everything from complex sales forecasts to income statements to balance sheets to cash flow projections. I am still looking for an appropriate book and/or spreadsheet add-ons that will allow me to do this. I have been searching in vain for such a program and/or book. Does anybody know?

The section on spreadsheet is terribly outdated - obsolete even. It's pretty much like a basic reference for financial modelling but does not really provide the step by step approach to the topic. Sorry but I don't think you will find useful tips on financial forecasting here.
Decent reference for practical financial analysis techniques.......1999-03-24
This book is useful for looking up not just formulas but valuation methodologies in a hurry. However most of the techniques, though illustrated well, do not go very deep. This book is probably good for beginners in finance. Experienced readers may be served better by other publications. All in all, I found this text useful as a quick and easy "boiled down" reference guide for models, formulas and valuation techniques.
A a good book which needs to be updated.......1998-08-15
This is a good book which contains financial formulas and many examples of business analysis. The chapter on spreedsheets is badly outdated. This detracts from the book because business analysis is now all about spreadsheets. The short chapter on outdated financial programs detracts from the book. Their are other, better, books now available.
To be fair, the book covers a very complete collect of business analysis precedures and still is a good reference.
