        Book Description

Images of Jamaica and the Bahamas as tropical paradises full of palm trees, white sandy beaches, and inviting warm water seem timeless. Surprisingly, the origins of those images can be traced back to the roots of the islands’ tourism industry in the 1880s. As Krista A. Thompson explains, in the late nineteenth century, tourism promoters, backed by British colonial administrators, began to market Jamaica and the Bahamas as picturesque “tropical” paradises. They hired photographers and artists to create carefully crafted representations, which then circulated internationally via postcards and illustrated guides and lectures.

Illustrated with more than one hundred images, including many in color, An Eye for the Tropics is a nuanced evaluation of the aesthetics of the “tropicalizing images” and their effects on Jamaica and the Bahamas. Thompson describes how representations created to project an image to the outside world altered everyday life on the islands. Hoteliers imported tropical plants to make the islands look more like the images. Many prominent tourist-oriented spaces, including hotels and famous beaches, became off-limits to the islands’ black populations, who were encouraged to act like the disciplined, loyal colonial subjects depicted in the pictures.

Analyzing the work of specific photographers and artists who created tropical representations of Jamaica and the Bahamas between the 1880s and the 1930s, Thompson shows how their images differ from the English picturesque landscape tradition. Turning to the present, she examines how tropicalizing images are deconstructed in works by contemporary artists—including Christopher Cozier, David Bailey, and Irénée Shaw—at the same time that they remain a staple of postcolonial governments’ vigorous efforts to attract tourists.

        Book Description

As new towns and cities spread across the American frontier in the nineteenth century, itinerant artists soon followed, documenting these growing urban centers by drawing aerial perspectives, also known as bird's eye views. Commissioned by land speculators, local businesses, civic organizations, and individual citizens, these renderings fostered both civic pride and local commerce. The use of color lithography, a recent invention popularized by such prominent publishers as Currier & Ives, allowed the inexpensive reproduction of the highest-quality drawings, so that a bird's eye view was within the financial budget of even the smallest towns. These extraordinarily detailed lithographs eventually numbered in the thousands and now serve as a rich pictorial record of North America as it stood a century ago.
This sequel to our highly acclaimed title An Atlas of Rare City Maps collects over 100 views dating between 1835 and 1902, showing the streets, buildings, churches, bridges, waterways, and surrounding countryside of North American towns, ranging from burgeoning metropolitan centers to small logging towns and mining camps. Baltimore, Brooklyn, Denver, Indianapolis, Memphis, Montreal, New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Syracuse, and Washington are just a few of the cities presented in this collection. The exquisite color and fine detail of these bird's eye views have been reproduced in all their original glory; also included is an introduction by John W. Reps providing a background on the artistic process and on urban development in the nineteenth century.

This is a book of graphics. In fact, I would use it as a coffee table book if it were not so precious to me.

It is an archive of drawn, etched and printed aerial perspectives.

It is great for design and compositional predecence in both urban and small town planning. If you are designing a small town and you wish for it to grow, this book would be an useful reference, as it graphically depicts the beginnings of many major U.S. cities.

This book shares the light, color, and poetry of Mexico with its readers. The photographer's passion for his subjects comes through with every photo. It is also an interesting view into the unique Mexican history of fiestas; the context of the traditions within daily life is very intriguing. I would highly recommend this book to those interested in either Mexico or color photography. It is a beautiful and sensitive work.

          Book Description

Step aboard a private plane for a breathtaking tour of the immense and varied wilderness of Latin America—lush lands and scenic waterways nearly impossible to experience any other way. Your guide to this remarkable vision is Robert B. Haas, award-winning environmentalist and one of the world's foremost artists in aerial photography.

To create this elegant portfolio, Haas covered 14 countries and an astonishing 80 percent of the land mass of Latin America. In magnificent color and exquisite composition, he captures the majesty of the Amazon, the fickleness of rare wildlife in Patagonia, and the incredible topography of untouched lands. Photographs are presented in large double-page panoramas, inviting the viewer to appreciate their abstract qualities and become absorbed in rich details. The aerial perspective gives a generous view of the land below: While large-scale environmental effects may be seen, man's blemishes are mostly diminished when viewed against the vastness of the land. A full-page map highlights countries and specific places photographed.

An introduction by Marie Arana—author of American Chica and Cellophane—prefaces the book. The photographs and commentary are organized thematically: landscapes, humans and their impact, wildlife, abstracts, ancient sites. Poignant essays penned by Haas while living in Latin America expand on themes important to understanding the region: culture, economy, development, tourism, and more.

5 out of 5 stars An exceptional book of photography.......2001-02-28

The photographs in this book are anything but boring and uninspiring. My guess would be that the negative reviews came from people who were expecting colorful pictures of sun-bleached and touristed Mexico. To me, this book offers photographs that are the true essence of the soul of the Mexican everyman. They're exquisite pictures that portray the richness and variety of Mexican rural and urban culture. And the span of time covered makes them especially interesting. The essays are a great contribution as well, especially the ones written by the photographers themselves.

1 out of 5 stars badly edited book.......2000-03-01

the photos seemed a bit lacking, i believe it was the editors that had some problems picking the right ones. maybe they weren't real photographers or lacked training, or whatever, but i wouldn't reccomend this book unless you were REALLY desperate for some photos.

4 out of 5 stars all of Mexico's surreality in one book.......1999-08-19

I beg to differ with the online review who characterized this book as boring. The vast appeal of Mexico has been deftly assembled by the editors who have chosen a range of photos that captures the country's rural and urban spirit and its place in history and art. The quality of the reproductions is fine and the commentary in English and Spanish offers the opportunity to enjoy the book from the perspective of a visitor as well as a native. As a survey of photography of Mexico, it is far from comprehensive, but it offers a broad selection of images that leaves no doubt about why so many photographers, professional and amateur, travel there.

                2 out of 5 stars over-hyped and under edited.......1998-12-31

Mexico offers a plethora of picture opportunites and photo essays, but this book does not bring out its potentials. A bad choice of picture selections by the editors obviously had something to do with how BORING this book really is. Save your money and goto Taco Bell for more Mexican enjoyment than this book will provide.

                      Description:
This paper draws on the resource-based view of the firm and contributes to our understanding of how the development of internal resources and capabilities in SMEs can provide sources of competitive advantages in the international arena and improve their business performance. This research found statistical evidence to suggest that business performance measured by growth rate, efficiency, productivity and shareholder's financial returns, is positively related with the development of internal capabilities such as soft technology (methods and processes that support the firm) and hard technology (externally acquired equipment, in-house development of machinery and innovation in raw materials) and a strategy of continuous improvement, innovation and change. A number of relevant contributions are proposed in this piece of research that expands our understanding of how SMEs can compete in the international context: (1) firms whose explicit business strategy emphasizes innovation and knowledge creation have been able to successfully participate in global contexts; (2) even though financial resources are important for a firm to leverage performance it was found that development of internal capabilities has been more important than limited financial resources in order to develop competitive advantages to compete with larger and multinational competitors; (3) results of this research support the proposition that from an associational economy perspective the development of a geographical region or country should be an interaction among a number of constituents namely government policies, the firms themselves and universities and research centers among others.

                          Book Description

As large firms move into international markets, smaller firms find it increasingly difficult to compete internationally. This book explores the nature of the international market for smaller firms and discusses ways that they can compete and use their unique competitive advantages in the global markets. The chapters examine niche markets that do not require economies of scale and ways of rethinking the relationship between local and global markets. Tamir Agmon and Richard L. Drobnick also explore the need to design new control systems across borders that recognize local norms and the new accounting systems that have developed based on differing country environments.

                              Book Description

This is the only available volume to summarize current knowledge of prehistoric regional exchange in the American Southwest and Mesoamerica. As such, anthropologists and archaeologists will find it a valuable source of important data for comparative analysis of regional systems relative to sociopolitical organization.

An excellent collection of thoughful review articles on patterns of ancient trade and exchange. There are nine chapters, covering the Chaco Anasazi (F. Mathien), Northern Anasazi (E. Blinman & C.D. Wilson), Hohokam (R. McGuire), marine shell exchange in N. Mexico and the SW (R. Bradley), Mesoamerican turquoise (P. Weigand & G. Harbottle), Mexico (R. Santley & C. Pool), lowland Maya (P. McAnany), and southern Central America (J. Hoopes). The introductory chapter by Baugh and Ericson provides a good overview of relevant archaeological theory.

                                Book Description

In this unique volume, archaeologists examine the changing economic structure of trade in North America over a period of 6,000 years. Organined by geographical and chronological divisions, each chapter focuses on trade in one of nine regions from the Arachiac through the late prehistoric period. Each contribution explores neighboring areas to llustrate the complexity of North American exchange. By charting the econmic structure of these regions, archaeologists, economic anthropologists, and economic geographers gain greater insight into the dynamics of North American trade and exchange on a continental wide basis.
