A good read. Mailer brings Picasso to life. Hard to put down.
I am re-reading this after a couple of years and I am remembering why I enjoyed it so much. It is nice to read an interpretive biography that makes Picasso human as opposed reading dry, critical art history for a change.

I found this book in an apartment in Florence, where i was staying for a couple days during a tour of Italy & Austria. The TV was broken, so i just picked up a random book that looked interesting. I hadn't read a book all the way through for a year or two, and wasn't planning on really reading this one either. After the first chapter, i could hardly put it down... The lady who owned the apartment let me borrow it for the rest of my trip, where i read the rest of it on trains and whatnot, and ended up thoroughly enjoying it. It is an extremely interesting and detailed book, which explores all of Picasso's adventures in Paris & Spain, his love life, and connects him to many interesting people, including some other popular artists of his time. Recommended reading for modern art fans..

Both blustering,rowdy boy geniuses...Both with their ups and downs with women. Mr. Mailer does his usual terrific job here,and admits a longtime obsession with the great artist. Anyone doubting Picasso's genius will have no doubts after reading this one. The author's descriptions of the great artist's youth leave one feeling that artistic genius is inevitable.From Spain to Paris,we are led on a jaunty trip.And he kept at it even into his nineties! In short,this must be among the classic special bios of perhaps the 20th century greatest artist!!

Mr. Mailer has done a great job on Picasso's early years. He has done solid research, knows the paintings and the personalities in Picasso's life very well. PP's relationship with Braque is presented clearly, the life in Paris in the early part of the century is well told too. Overall, a lively and entertaining read, much livelier than the door jam books of John Richardson.

Third title in the Brannon series.......2004-12-29
Stuart Brannon moves on, intending to go back home to Arizona and see what has become of his ranch. On the way, he gets embroiled in yet another drama - this time at Paradise Meadow, a booming mining town mayored by Dixon Rutherford, one of the outlaws from Hard Winter. Brannon's friend Peter Mulroney is jailed for a crime a did not commit, and Rutherford seeks to drive schoolteacher Rose Creek out of town. Once again, Brannon cannot merely stand by and do nothing where injustice runs rampant.
His attempt to help the townspeople overthrow corruption is not without complication, however. Rose Creek questions Brannon's faith, tipping him into internal crisis and making him wonder if his belief in God is pure and without contradiction, after all.
Bly gets better and better. A man who believes in God and old-fashioned chivalry, without apology; a woman strong enough to stand up for what she believes is right, although she may not understand the One who gave her the steel to do so; a rollicking adventure with a hint of romance that doesn't turn out quite as one expects it to.

Vicarious Travel and A Generational Saga.......2002-09-30
A generational study of following one's heart, beginning with the mother coming of age in the 60s and the daughter in the 80s. With very different perspectives and the usual mother/daughter drama, this is a very richly readable book that reminds me a lot of Pilcher and Binchy. The dialogue is a little muted, but this is intellectual (as in "use your imagination") non-bodice ripper kind of romance. An amazing weaving into a very enjoyable book that will take the reader from the Cornish Coast, to swinging London, to Scotland and ... then on to Afghanistan. The timing of this book makes the story all the more interesting in light of current events.
There is another generational novel entitled LEGACY OF LOVE which, if you are a more orderly person than I, you may wish to read first. Apparently that book leads up to this one, though I have to say this one stood quite well on its own. I do intend to read the earlier book, for I truly enjoyed this author.
Not like Joanna Trollope's other books.......2002-01-10
I just found this dissapointing. But then I am a big fan of Joanna Trollope writting as herself. This book was just to lite for me. A romance, a family story, but without the zing that her other books have that makes them something more than just a fun read.

London swings like a pendulum in the sixties, but Alexa Langley feels more like a fish out of water. Unlike her successful parents who thrive in the mod climate, Alexa feels shy and unworthy. Everyone concludes that Alexa is a classic underachiever who could do better. Even in marriage she fails though betrayal by her spouse is a more apt description. Alexa finally flees London with her infant Carly for a family owned Scottish castle that has been neglected for years. Will Alexa find the inner strength that flows in the blood of her female ancestors or is she the skipped generation?
In 1988, Carly finds an extraordinary journal that describes the adventures of her great great grandmother in Afghanistan (see A LEGACY OF LOVE). Unable to resist, Carly retraces the steps of her ancestor while not knowing what she seeks or what she will find as she treks across the war-scared landscape.
A SECOND LEGACY is actually two novellas in one book. Caroline Harvey, better known as Joanna Trollope, (both names appear on the title page - duh) provides her audience with the tales of two women. The story lines are similar yet quite different. Alexa's tale is a character study of someone struggling to find contentment and her self worth. Carly's plot centers on finding a place in the world too, but is more of a romantic suspense drama. Still each story engages the reader who feel empathy towards the heroines and shows why this writer is a highly regarded best selling author.

Stress levels in health professionals have been shown to be high in many countries and in most staff groups. Strees in health professionals.......2000-06-21
This book is the second edition (first published in 1987) edited by a clinical psychologist from the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, England and an organisational psychologist from Curtin University of Technology, Perth in Western Australia. There are also 25 international multidisciplinary contributors with most of the authors from the field of psychology. Stress in health professionals is devided into three parts: the study of stress, the stress of various professions and interventions with a total of 18 chapters. The first edition had focus on physicians at a time, when the field was in its initial stage, but the present edition has a much broader definition of health professionals, including nurses, health service managers, ambulance personnel and child protection workers. I especially liked the chapter on child protection workers, because this is a field, where in the "heat of the moment" the focus is most of the times on the child and their families. Cases of child abuse usually gets a lot of media coverage and in recent years the media has often blamed the professionals of overreaction and being too ready to remove children from their families, especially in cases of child sexual abuse. In this chapter results from a survey of doctors and nurses working in child protection from the Yorkshire region are presented. The higest levels of stress were caused by the fear of making mistakes, followed by overwork and organisational change. Doctors found the most difficult group to relate to were fellow pediatricians followed by senior managers, while nurses found social services personnel followed by senior managers their most difficult groups to work with. The book can be recommended as a resourse for health providers, managers and researchers involved in the field of work stress.
