Fascinating non-political book on White House history.......2007-01-12

People my age were taught citizenship in school and were taught to respect the President. I have always been fascinated with the personal lives of the Presidents and the folklore of the White House. This book does not disappoint if you like the "behind the scenes" information on the White House and its past residents. I also recommend the one written for children by the same author. This puts politics aside and restores some pride in the institution of our Presidency and their families.

A Wonderful Resource........2006-03-01

Season's Greetings from the White House is an excellent source of presidential Christmas/holiday items from the early part of the twentieth century to the present. Each President's holiday greetings along with staff gifts are shown. Mrs. Seeley has written an superb book which continues to grow with each new edition. The quality of photographs and the amount of them in the book make it worth the price. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has an interest in not only presidential items, but for anyone who has any interest in the holiday season.

Rich in history and nostalgia .......2005-01-20

Mary Evans Seeley is an expert on Christmas celebrations in the White House. Several years ago, she decided to share her knowledge and research dealing with personal First Family recollections and the result is the wonderful book "Season's Greetings from the White House."

It is a book for historians, Americana fans, Christmas collectors and art lovers. More than just behind-the-scenes stories, this richly illustrated volume shows, in full color throughout, the actual cards, prints and other Presidential gifts of sterling silver, pewter, glass, wood and leather. Most of the gifts were designed for distribution to White House staffers.

Seeley, who resides in Tampa, Florida, shares with the reader, the personal experiences of the wide variety of artists whose works came to grace Presidential cards and gift prints. To bring in historical color, the author interviewed a number of First Ladies and children of First Families.

The book's frontispiece displays the magnificent Neapolitan Baroque crèche in the White House East Room in 1963. The photograph was selected by President and Mrs. Kennedy for their Christmas card scheduled to be sent in December. Less than 30 were personally signed by both the President and First Lady prior to their fateful Dallas trip. These dual-signed Christmas cards are among the rarest of all Presidential Christmas memorabilia.

The photos of Seeley's historical collection of White House Christmas cards offers an interesting glimpse of our nation's culture and its values through the years.

It's no matter if you look upon the book as a major scholarly effort or simply a beautiful insight into the traditions of our First Families, "Season's Greetings from the White House" makes an excellent gift for the holidays and is a wonderful reference book for historians who are seeking the human side of Christmas in the Presidential Mansion.

I laughed out loud reading these plays! Seriously, David Sedaris is one warped individual who has given all of us the gift of sharing his experiences! You will not be sorry you read this. Unless, of course, you are really uptight. If you need a good laugh, a good irreverent laugh... this is for you!

Very funny, sarcastic........2005-07-30

It would appear many of stories are somewhat based off the authors life. Some of the stories are just sarcastic takes on society and how people act though. I liked this book, the first of the authors I had ever read. I was compelled to make my purchase after hearing the author on NPR giving an interview and reciting a few paragraphs from the Santaland story. I wasn't disappointed. If you like to l laugh and think, this is for you. It probably helps to be a bit jaded and appreciate a darker humor.

Good, but not quite as insanely hilarious as expected..........2003-10-10

I bought this compilation because after purchasing "Strangers With Candy" Season One on DVD, this kept showing up in my Amazon recommendations every day for over a month. I read the reviews, and decided it couldn't be that bad. It wasn't. It just wasn't that super, either. Sure, there are funny parts, and sure I could envision some of this on the stage, but the truth is that David Sedaris' storytelling is good but somewhat short of other NPR geniuses like Garrison Keillor.

I'll keep reading him, in search of the comedy stroke that so many others seem to have found, but I guarantee no milk was coming out of my nose while choking out laughter during this read. It kind of seems like the sort of writing a high school kid might do on a sitcom (the character Warren P. Chestwick from NBC's "Ed" comes to mind) to blossom his stage career, but it just doesn't hold up well on its own. Call me uncultured if you want, but I just don't think he's worth the salt of some of the other NPR favorites. But like I said, I'll keep reading.

Well worth reading.......2002-04-19

I picked up this book at the library after recognizing the title of "The Santaland Diaries" from posters I had seen in downtown Pittsburgh at Christmastime. Figuring it would be a quick read, I borrowed it and started paging through it.

I don't think I ever stopped laughing.

"The Santaland Diaries" is a hilarious one-man play about the author's experiences working as an elf in Santaland at Macy's department store in New York City. Chronicling everything from his dismay at having to choose an 'elf name' to be referred to as, to his questionable co-workers (including profiles of all the Santas and the woman who desperately wanted to wear her costume home everyday), the quality of visitors, and his final relief at the end of the season, Sedaris has put together a brilliant piece of work.

I only regret that I missed the chance to see this performed at Christmastime, and hope that I have a chance to see a future show. It's worth a read, at the very least, and you may find yourself quoting it as I have ("It breaks my heart to see a grown man dressed as a taco" is one of my favorite lines, and I find ways to use it in conversation entirely too often). Great for a quick pick-me-up.

Santaland, Yes!; This Script, No!.......2000-12-29

"The Santaland Diaries" is superlative satire. The words bristle and delight. Sedaris is a genuine American voice -- witty, sardonic, removed, unpredictable. I have seen "Santaland" work on stage many times. Way funny stuff.

However, why read a script when you can read the original prose in *Barrel Fever* or *Holidays on Ice*? You could even track down Sedaris reading it aloud on CD? The DPS script seems a backwards way to encounter "Santaland" on the page.

As far as "Seasons Greetings" goes, well, let's just say that this is not a piece of writing for the ages.

I have owned this Holiday cookbook for at least 10 years
and it's fantastic. I am now buying a copy for my parents

Food for lady who has no time to cook.......2000-04-17

I bought this book on sale due to the food pictures in thebook. A person who love cooking usually can tell if the author isgood by looking at the pictures of the final product. What attracted me to get this book was her recipe for pick up drumsticks. That is the most simple recipe I had seen for baking up drumpsticks that looked like they were fried. Other ideas in the book are also great and time saving. Our church always having special holiday dinner or special dinner gets together for rivival meeting nights, etc. It is so hard to finds people who are willing to cook for such large audience. This is a life saver for ladies who are in charge of the food for those special occasion, even for a Chinese church. I had already shared some of the recipes with friends at church and they just can't wait to try them out (This also include busy guys who help their wives out with cooking). I highly recommend you to get a copy of this book. END

Terrific recipes for holiday and party entertaining........1997-11-24

I immediately went out and purchased this book after attending a party in which the hostess presented a beautiful and tasty appetizer buffet using eight different recipes from Season's Greetings. The recipes are all eye appealing, delicious and in most cases easy to make. Recipes also include make-ahead tips. I highly recommend it for the beginner as well as the seasoned hostess.

The furniture industry is not a major employer in the United States. Employment in the American furniture industry stood at 491,200 as of 2002. This is less than 0.4% of the overall employment in the United States. It seems that the furniture industry lends itself less to labor-saving technologies than other industries. Between 1982 and 2002, furniture employment grew by 13.6% while total manufacturing employment fell by 11%. Hourly wage rate in the furniture and fixtures industry averaged $12.65 compared to $15.30 for manufacturing as a whole in 2002. The average furniture employee’s earnings were just 82.7% of those of the average manufacturing employee. During the past 20 years, this gap has gradually narrowed. The reason for this difference must be found in the fact that the output per worker (labor productivity) in the furniture sector falls short of that among all manufacturers by almost 50%.

This is due to the introduction of labor-saving technologies. This is a study of the Spanish Labour Movement in Barcelona from 1939 to 1988, with particular emphasis on the period between 1962 and 1976. It explains how the movement, so long the scourge of the Franco regime, became the poor relation of the new democracy it had helped to create.
