5 out of 5 stars Praise for one of our most thoughtful & talented architects.......2003-01-26

Alfredo De Vido won my admiration years ago for his consistent efforts in designing carefully considered residences and commercial projects in a wide variety of responsive, exciting and inspiringly original contemporary styles, wonderfully matched to his clients' programs. Anyone recognizing real architectural excellence will enjoy the beautiful and instructive photographs and drawings (including interesting construction details) of this New York master architect's fine work. If you take De Vido's lifework to heart as I have, you will also greatly enjoy Alfredo De Vido: Selected and Current Works (The Master Architect Series III)/ISBN 1875498761 as well as his own books - House Design: Art and Practice/ISBN 047152980X, Designing Your Client's House/ISBN 0823013073, and Innovative Management Techniques For Architectural Design and Construction/ISBN 0823072916.

    Product Description

As the dominant form of electronic mass communication in the United States from the 1930s into the 1950s, radio helped to forge a modern continental nation. It fused myriad subcultures—heavily rural, ethnic, and immigrant—into a national identity, unifying the nation in the face of the Depression and war. Later, federal deregulation allowed the radio of the “Golden Age,” 1926–1952, to devolve into a chain-dominated, satellite-fed plaything of Wall Street. Today, radio has the highest profit ratio of all the media outlets—and Golden Age traditions of programming taste, diversity, balance, and localism are a legacy squandered. This anecdote-rich sweep of radio history, from its birth as Marconi’s “wireless telegraph” through its current status under deregulation, analyzes the changing medium’s social, political, and cultural impact. It casts new light on many topics, including the roles of women and African Americans, programming sources outside the Hollywood-Broadway nexus, and arguments about Amos ’n’ Andy—once the hit that jump-started radio’s young networks, now a controversial remnant of a bygone era. The book is augmented with more than sixty photos, extensive source notes, and a bibliography.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Insightful: A Gem.......2006-09-23

This book is thoroughly researched and footnoted, with an extensive bibliography and scholarly content, yet is interesting and accessible to the lay person. Fascinating trivia is included; photos are unusual and interesting too - for example, a b/w close-up of Ronald Reagan at his first job, a radio announcer in Davenport, Iowa.

Detailed but concise and extremely well-written, the author covers the background of radio and lessons learned (or lessons we COULD learn) as they apply to today's media conglomerates and Federal regulators in the chapter "A Legacy Lost."

Outstanding nonfiction reading and well worth the price.

            Book Description

This landmark work explores the vibrant world of football from the 1920s through the 1950s, a period in which the game became deeply embedded in American life. Though millions experienced the thrills of college and professional football firsthand during these years, many more encountered the game through their daily newspapers or the weekly Saturday Evening Post, on radio broadcasts, and in the newsreels and feature films shown at their local movie theaters. Asking what football meant to these millions who followed it either casually or passionately, Michael Oriard reconstructs a media-created world of football and explores its deep entanglements with a modernizing American society.

Football, claims Oriard, served as an agent of "Americanization" for immigrant groups but resisted attempts at true integration and racial equality, while anxieties over the domestication and affluence of middle-class American life helped pave the way for the sport's rise in popularity during the Cold War. Underlying these threads is the story of how the print and broadcast media, in ways specific to each medium, were powerful forces in constructing the football culture we know today.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Reflections on the rise of America's Game.......2006-11-17

This is really a fascinating and well written book. Oriard looks at every angle in deconstructing how and why football became America's Game by 1960. Great illustrations accompany very readable text. It's a social history as much as a football history, but it speaks volumes about the sporting heritage of America and how race, class, and ethnicity are reflected in the game - and indeed how the game has forced us to confront some of the less savory facets of American society, particularly race. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the history of football and American popular culture.

5 out of 5 stars Enlightening Trip Back to Radio's Golden Era.......2007-09-11

Chuck Schaden is the only person ever inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame for being an avid listener. Schaden was a radio fan during radio's golden age and when he reach adulthood, he began collecting and rebroadcasting these shows on his own "Those Were the Days" radio program.

During the 1970's, Schaden had the opportunity to interview many former stars of radio and he often broadcasts these taped interviews on his show. His book, "Speaking of Radio," contains the transcripts of these interviews.

Schaden interviews everyone from Don Ameche and Jack Benny to Rudy Vallee and Willard Waterman (the book contains 46 interviews in all). Most of the subjects were part of entertainment industry but Schaden also interviews World War Two correspondent, Bill Baldwin.

The beauty of the book is that Schaden is so extremely knowledgeable that he is able to ask questions that get at the kernel of whatever program he is discussing with his interviewees (not that he ever takes center stage -- he just knows how to ask the right questions to bring out the best answers). The result is an extremely enlightening read on a largely forgotten but significant slice of American entertainment history.

The book is practically unavailable on Amazon but you can find it at his website, "NostalgiaDigest.com."

I am reviewing the cassette that accompanies the book, "A Golden Age: The Golden Age of Radio". The cassette really does add to the book by adding background sounds to the story. I had the book first and debated on the cassette awhile before deciding to locate one.

I rated it 4 instead of 5 because at the beginning and the end, when the girl is listening to her headphones, you get blasted with rock music. I don't like being blasted and I don't like rock music. Other than that, I recommend getting the cassette before they sell out.

                    Book Description

This special pottery combines the traditions of Pueblo and Navajo artists with daring new interpretations by the modern generation. In 280 beautiful color photos, styles inherently connected with old beliefs and Southwest clay are shown to have fresh appearance in the hands of contemporary potters. The book has three easy-to-use sections: Part 1 presents vessels (bowls, plates, ollas, pitchers, and vases) arranged alphabetically by living potters in Acoma, Hopi, Jemez, Navajo, San Felipe, San Ildefonso, San Juan, Santa Ana, Zia and Zuni families. Part 2 presents figures (storytellers and charming animal figures) arranged alphabetically by artists. Part 3 is an unprecedented directory of artists (kachina carvers, jewelry makers, sculptors and potters), in a comprehensive alphabetical format which combines biographies with the makers' personal beliefs to help the reader interpret their work. The Directory also cross-references the pottery shown in the book. This reference section alone makes the work indispensible for everyone concerned with contemporary Indian arts.
