Book Description
The newest titles in the Princeton Architectural Press Campus Guide series take readers on an insider's tour of the University of Washington in Seattle, Rice University in Houston, and Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Beautifully photographed in full color, the guides present architectural walks at three of America's finest campuses, revealing the stories behind the historic and contemporary buildings, gardens, and works of public art.?
The community of Cranbrook, designed by Eliel Saarinen, combines modernism with arts-and-crafts and art deco impulses; more recently, Steven Holl, Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, and Rafael Moneo have made contributions to Cranbrook's campus.

Book Description
This follow-up to the Paper Rad collective's recent hit, Paper Rad, B.J. and da Dogs, is both a return to form and a move forward. Comic strips, psychedelic imagery and the group's trademark lo-fi digital wizardry lend Pig Tales Digest the feeling of an old-school variety show. Bounding from stories, to suites of gag cartoons, to drawings of Alf, Miss Piggy and other pixillated creatures, this book literally ricochets between silly humor and serious satire, raising the house style of exuberant digital Neo-Primitivism to new heights. This well-priced, accessible sampler, featuring an introduction by the artist Donald Baechler, is sure to reach a wide audience.
Book Description
An award-winning artist concocts a really fantastic-looking drawing workbook that’s as fun, colorful, and carefully structured as the cartoons themselves—and a must on every aspiring cartoonist’s bookshelf.
From mastering the correct facial proportions to drawing believable scenes with human and animal figures: that’s where this effective and engaging how-to course takes would-be cartoonists, whether they want to create a superhero or mock the latest political shenanigans. It teaches basic drawing skills, provides guidance on the necessary tools, covers a wide range of styles and techniques, and offers thoughtful projects that encourage experimentation and originality. The plentiful images delight while they instruct beginners on perspective and foreshortening; depicting the figure in movement and through body language; portraying furniture and common objects; and defining a sense of place. Develop a good sense of composition, see how to come up with ideas, and put together an effective portfolio. An artist’s gallery presents a range of enjoyable professional work, including caricature and political satire, children’s cartoons, slice-of-life sequences, and more.

Filled with extraordinary information & examples........2007-04-09
This book is loaded with a lot of information for the cartoonist. It is not just a book for an artist with the talent to create a story line for a comic strip or book, but the suggestions work for all types of drawing. Hatching marks (or shadows, wrinkles, personality...) are imperative, and should never be so busy you lose the image. This book will also help a person judge proportions and perspective so that whatever type of art they choose to do, help is in these pages.

Artists Beware.......2001-02-01
I recently recieved this book for Christmas. As an aspiring comic and cartoon artist, I usually try to pick up as many books concerning the subject as I can; they are few and far between. I was excited at first, but upon reading through it, I was very disappointed. Not only did I not learn very little that was new for me from this book, it did not deal in depth with either the art or the more technical side of comic books (the writing, the layouts, the character development, and so on). It DID provide some minute details that I hadn't run into, such as average page numbers and page sizes, but that was about the extent of the book's usefulness. I believe, however, that this book was intended for a different audience; mainly, those people who are trying to draw comics for the first time. This book will more than likely give them a generalized overview of what the genre is that they are looking at. However, to the more experienced artist, who has been at the drawing board for a year or two and with a few other comic instruction books on his shelf, this book doesn't deliver.
Take the next step . . ........2000-06-21
If you are an aspiring comic book artist looking to take the next step - from merely sitting at your desk and sketching to making publishing-ready work, this book can help point out this little details that most overlook or fail to learn.

New to Computer Coloring? Pick this book up!!!.......2007-09-30
When I first got Photoshop, intent on learning how to color my drawings in that comic book style, I didn't know where to start. So, I started surfing Amazon for computer coloring books, and bought a few. Some of them were good, some just plain awful, but of all of the ones I bought, this is certainly the best.
"Digital Manga Workshop" is an excellent introduction for amateurs looking to get their work colored via computer. It provides handy, step-by-step guides on the process, and is extremely useful. Even the novice Photoshop user (much of the book focuses on the use of Photoshop, much to my delight) will have no trouble following their instructions. I cannot recommend this highly enough.
A great intro to digital coloring.......2007-02-11
As many have already stated, this book has little to specifically to do with manga. I personally think the title and drawing style were probably chosen to be more catchy and specific than just "digital coloring." There's no shortage of digital artwork out there that has nothing to do with manga or anime style, and this book is relevant to anyone wanting to learn to color their artwork digitally, regardless of how it's drawn.
Whereas many web coloring tutorials are either very locked in about techinque or horrendously general, Digital Manga Workshop covers several specific options. It shows not just how to color in the typical cel style of a lot of digital artwork, but also airbrush, painting and watercolor styles as well.
The book gives instruction in both Photoshop and Painter depending on which is best suited for the style being covered and even offer some low-to-no cost alternatives to those programs.
The book also covers the important step before and after the coloring process, such as scanning and digitally inking drawings so you have god base to start with, and export so all your hard work doesn't end up as a blotchy web graphic.
Digital Manga Workshop definitely isn't the be all/end all book of digital coloring, but considering the wealth of information covered for such a low price, it's surely a worthwhile book to have around
Misleading title; really digital anime style.......2007-01-19
I wish I could give this book a good review. Unfortunately, I can't. The title is very misleading. If you expect this book to teach you how to draw manga images digitally (as I did), you will be very disappointed. 99.9% of all manga images are black and white, and use frames, speech bubbles with text, sound effects, black and white line effects, and tones (black and white patterns that read as gray when printed). This book does NOT cover any of this.
It also contains some ludicrously incorrect information. For instance, it says that unlike American comics (where you have a penciler, inker, and letterer), Japanese artists do everything themselves. Nothing could be further from the truth, as any interview with a mangaka (Japanese manga artist) or perusal of the copyright page will tell you. In fact, most manga are created by a primary artist and several assistants.
Here's an even worse example. In the introduction to digital inking, they say, "In manga-style artwork, inked lines are usually contour lines...the linework of a character's hand would depict the outline of the fingers, but wouldn't show shading, wrinkles, or folds in the skin. It is up to the colors to show depth and texture." Um, except, manga is published exclusively IN BLACK AND WHITE. There are no colors! Have they ever read a manga? My mind boggles. Pick up any manga and open it and you will see for yourself. They go on to say, that "inking techniques such as hatching, stippling, and spotting black...are atypical in manga style art, but can be employed for stylistic purposes to achieve a distintice look."
This would be news to CLAMP, the studio that created many manga bestsellers, who are famous for their beautiful black and white line work. Or to, well, any of the mangakas, really.
This book teaches very basic color, digital techniques in anime `cel' style. It focuses on Photoshop and Painter, and ignores Illustrator and the manga-specific software (such as ComicWorks and Manga Studio) completely. They don't even cover the fact that most Japanese mangakas as well as most American digital art, is done on the Mac platform.
I gave it two stars because it does teach some simple techniques to create layered, color digital art, but these techniques are better covered in the many free online tutorials available on the web or in other, more comprehensive art technique books.
Fantastic.......2005-10-09
I love this book, I picked it up after I saw the interview on G4tv and fell in love with it. My art has expanded so much since I read this book. I've been thinking about using my computer for my art for a long time and when I saw this I said to myself " wow this was just what I'm lloking for." If you even think you would enjoy this style of art I highly recommend this book.
Digital Manga for Dummies........2005-09-22
With the ever increasing popularity of manga art, Digital coloring and CGing have became something common nowadays. Lindsay Cibos and Jared Jodges work you through everything you'll need to make the backbone of an excellent manga character--from the character itself to the coll background behind it. This is a MUST HAVE for any aspiring manga artist--and this book makes it easy for anyone with a computer to use.

Book Description
Contrary to popular belief, when you buy an expensive camera the exposure skills DO NOT COME with it!
When you buy an expensive GUITAR, you KNOW that playing skills DO NOT COME with it! When you buy an expensive CAR, you KNOW that driving skills DO NOT COME with it! When you buy an expensive CAMERA, why, then, do you NOT KNOW that exposure skills DO NOT COME with it?
This book teaches the beginning Digital/35mm photographer (9th grade level) the simple and practical methods of correctly exposing a subject. This is also the world's first Digital Zone System book that addresses the application of the Zone System of exposure using current manual digital cameras including many of today's D-Slrs. The book covers in detail the applications of a camera's meter, an off-camera spot meter, an off-camera incident meter, and easy-to-remember techniques for exposing sunlit to moonlit subjects without a meter. The book uses Farzad's simplified 5-stop technique using 100 ISO color slide or Digital Film as its base, but the same techniques can be applied to Black and White, as well as color negative film with different ISOs. Since all the thinking is done before the photographer takes the picture, the book is ideal for this millennium's 35mm photographers that use one-hour processing labs. Since all the exposure decisions are made ahead of time (before the picture is taken), the technique saves the digital photographer many hours that he or she would waste behind the computer trying to figure out what he/she wanted to capture in the first place. The highest level of math required from the reader to understand this book, is to be able to multiply and divide a number by two. Also in the fourth edition (with the Lotus flower on the cover), a special calibration section is added to the end of the book for all those photographers who have spent a few thousand dollars on their D-Slr and are consistently getting underexposed and unacceptable images.
The fourth edition also includes Digital footnotes and assignments for photographers using manual digital cameras. The book also includes Digital as well as 35mm exposure cheat sheets for Canon EOS 5D, Canon EOS 10D, Canon EOS 20D, Canon EOS 30D, Canon EOS A2/A2e, Canon EOS Rebel TI, Canon EOS Rebel XT, Canon EOS Rebel Xti, Canon PowerShot G5, FujiFilm FinePix S7000, Minolta Maxxum 5, Minolta Maxxum 7, Minolta Maxxum 9, Minolta Maxxum STSi, Nikon Coolpix 990, Nikon Coolpix 5700, Nikon Coolpix 8700, Nikon D50, Nikon D70, Nikon D80, Nikon D200, Nikon F4, Nikon F5, Nikon F100, Nikon N70, Nikon N90, Nikon N6006, Nikon N8008s, Pentax *ist-D, Pentax 645N, Pentax MZS, Pentax PZ1P, and Sony DSC-F717.

A very useful Book to begin Photography........2007-08-24
The Confused Photographer's Guide to Photographic Exposure and the Simplified Zone System
I am a beginner to the world of photography. The reason for me to buy this book was the difficulty with getting a correct exposure to suit different lighting conditions and objects.
After reading this book now I am able to get a correct exposure and make it quickly.
This is the best book I read which is intended for beginners as well.Book provides a lot of details in a very easy to understand format.Ample graphics are used and the Author gradually takes the reader from very basic exposure techniques to more advanced ways.Further he provides some quick steps as well.
Great way to de-mystify the field of exposure.......2007-06-03
I ordered this book as I felt that I was getting nowhere with my undrrstanding of exposure. Over the past few months I agonized over which ones to buy and after much searching I have to say that this book is up there at the top.
The author has also been generous enough to answer my questions on his system and provided me with some answers that are worth their weight in gold!
Thank you Bahman for de-mystifying the subject of exposure and thank you for helping me on the road to improving my photography!
Great book.......2007-05-14
This book assumes that you know very little and then takes you through to teaching advanced techniques in getting the correct exposure every time. A well written book.
Wow -- This is the book to have on the subject of Zone Systems.......2007-05-12
I was familiar with the Zone System, which is used to draw out more detail in a photograph. In fact, you can find a fantastic description of the process on Wikipedia.
In a print system where you have a white paper that turns black when exposed to light, you expose for the dark parts and use dark room processes to get the light parts.
In a digital system, things are reversed because you have a black starting point that turns white when exposed to light. As such, one exposes for the lighter elements and use digital software to post-process the darker areas.
Things become a little confusing though when you are trying to remember what you're trying to do and you realize your meter isn't giving you the reading you want.
Meters expose to 18% grey. Humans, for some reason, perceive this amount as 50%. That is, if you see black and you see white, what you'd call 50% grey in the middle would actually be reflecting only 18% of the light falling on it. Weird, I know. Anyhow...
Anything you point your camera's meter at, it will try to adjust the tone as 18% grey. As such, you first have to learn to see the tone independent of color. This book teaches you how by showing numerous examples along side of extremes.
Once you're pointing your camera's meter at the right place for the zone system to work, you then have to compensate for your meter not knowing you did that. Once again, the book gives plenty of examples, shows all combinations possible, and teaches you several ways to think about the problem so that you know whether you need to expose more or less and by how much.
To top it off, not all camera models work the same way with notation. For instance, if your camera says +2, does that mean that you are adding two stops to what the meter is reading? Or, are you indicating that the meter is two stops more than what you want? The answer is that it depends based upon your camera, and that's covered too.
Once you've got all the mechanics worked out, the book then covers the zone system and works into more advanced applications of it, and then touches on the artistic aspects.
There's lots of big pictures on sparse pages to specifically reduce confusion and deliberately designed not to overwhelm the reader with details that aren't needed for that example. Conversely, during discussion moments, complete coverage of the topic is provided in a very approachable manner.
Two thumbs up for the author of this book. I wish other authors would cover subject matters as clearly and coherently.
A users review.......2007-02-08
Ask many different photographers for advice and guidance on learning the zone system (as I did) and you will get as many different replies. Also, many books written on the subject unnecessarily complicate their explanations and therefore discourage beginners. Considering that exposure is the most important concept in all of photography, anyone with more than a passing interest and a desire to create beautiful pictures will sooner or later arrive at the door of the zone system. Photography and the zone system go hand-in-hand like red wine and steak. I had purchased at least 4 different books on the subject and still been confused until I read the book by Mr. Farzad. Within 1 hour I suddenly realized how simple it all was and was wondering why it hadn't been explained so simply before this publication! Copiously illustrated with simple diagrams I would defy anyone to not understand the zone system after the first read of this book. For the past 4 years I have been teaching photography at my local college and I use the simple explanations as taught in the book with my students. Within an hour or two, 90% of the class find the zone system it simplicity itself. Do yourself a favor, stop being confused and read this book, your pictures will benefit almost instantly. I would have no reservations at awarding this book 10 out of 10.

If "Knowledge is power"..........2004-02-17
I had to read this book a few years ago for a class at university. A friend lent it to me, and I found it interesting, instructive and easy to read. As a result, I ended up buying it.
The author of "Estructura económica internacional" ("International economic structure"), Ramón Tamames, is a well-known spanish economist who teaches at the Autonomous University of Madrid. The 1st edition of this book was published in 1970, but this is already the 19th edition, and it has been updated to include some of the more important developments in the economic field up to 1999.
Tamames tells the reader about the formation process of the international economy, and about the origins of international economic cooperation, without forgetting to pay attention to the different processes of integration that are taking place nowadays. As if that were not enough, he also deals with some issues that have great importance nowadays (like economic fluctuations), and studies the most important economic potencies.
The reason for the success of this book is clear. Tamames gives the reader the theoretical basis that is essential to understand the international economic structure, thus allowing him to appreciate better what is happening around him, and act in consequence. If "Knowledge is power", this book is a good way to empower the average reader who wants to know more about the modern world, and the economic processes that take place in it.
On the whole, highly recommended... Enjoy it !!!

From the supplier: The Assn of Private Pension and Welfare Plans has proposed a simplified pension program to expand the voluntary employment-based retirement system. Five basic principles of the program are decrease administrative costs and restrictions, remove revenue-driven proposals, do no harm, maintain the voluntary aspect of the system and improve user education. Additional proposals by the association include allowing older individuals to make additional contributions and ease the portability of benefits.

Book Description
This book uses findings from a major recent research program involving economists, psychologists, sociologists and public policy experts to show that economic self-interest and cultural and traditional factors interact in complex ways in people's responses to risk and uncertainty in everyday life, so that exclusive reliance on both rational actor theoretical approaches and consumerist policies is flawed.

From the supplier: The Supreme Court ruled in a 5-4 decision that the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) does not allow monetary damage suits to be filed against nonfiduciary companies that knowingly join in a fiduciary company's deviation from responsibilities. Specifically, the court dismissed a lawsuit that sought damages from Hewitt Assoc under ERISA provisions. Former Kaiser Steel Retirement Plan participants claimed that the nonfiduciary company Hewitt had contributed to the underfinancing of the retirement fund and was liable for damages.

Book Description
Now firmly established as fixtures of the American workplace, temporary employees comprise a much-discussed but still poorly understood segment of the labor force. In this consciousness-raising book, Jackie Krasas Rogers explores the realities of temporary work from the points of view of workers, agencies, and clients, focusing especially on issues of race, gender, power, and identity.
Rogers investigates the situations of two very different kinds of temporary worker--lawyers and those in clerical settings--and finds contrasts and similarities between the two groups' reasons for seeking temporary work, the type of tasks performed, and the value attached to that labor.
The goals of temporary workers can be at odds with the interests of the agency and the client, the other players in the power triad of "temping." Where clerical workers often see temporary employment as a stepping stone to a permanent job, many find upward mobility more illusory than real. Because temporary workers can be called in and let go at will or whim, and they have no established social relations in the workplace, they often work harder than permanent workers.
Rogers, one of the authoritative scholars of temporary work in the United States, uses extensive archival and field data--including notes from her own work as an office temp--to put a face on America's temporary workforce.

Chapters consider both exploitation issues and control issue.......2001-02-21
Temps: The Many Faces Of The Changing Workplace surveys temp work as it applies to both high- and low-skilled participants, considering the experiences of temps at all levels and examining the changes the industry has experienced over the years. Relationships between agencies, clients and workers are examined and chapters consider both exploitation issues and control issues often at the heart of temp work conflicts.
