A Master Degree level business book. So many business books are sooo '101' and dry and unimaginative. The Peaceable Kingdom is fresh and sounds a clear voice. Cleverly written but yet profound in thought. Just knowing that there are people in management and top CEOs that profess in following the principles in this book brings hope to an otherwise ego fear driven realm.

If Your In Advertising, Stay Away.......2003-12-04

Most books on advertising and creativity are pretty bad, and this one is no exception.

I wish for once we could have a creative who talks about process more than accomplishment. Instead, Stan Richards (and authors like him) spend many pages complimenting their own genius. Unfortunately they give us no insight into what supposedly makes them a genius.

Just search Amazon for Stan Richards other book "The Land of Many Breasts". Trust me, it's much more fascinating than this one. And a more accurate depiction of his agency. I think you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

A Monument to Being Mediocre.......2003-11-04

Whoa. I didn't even know people still thought like this. Something tells me either Mr. Richards didn't really write this or... wait, he didn't write it.

I'm sure Mr. Richards is a smart man. After all, he is rich. And all rich people are smart, right?

But seriously, what Stan fails to see (even though he gives it lip service) is that creativity is the most important thing to any agency worth it's salt. Not media buying capabilities. Not budgets. Not even account service.

He speaks a lot about being a straight shooter, about being in Dallas, about having a jet, etc. But he doesn't really talk about ideas. He doesn't talk about the kind of thinking he loves.

Originally prepared as a text for students aspiring to high political positions in Confucian China, One Hundred Unorthodox Strategies is a compendium of Oriental strategies concisely stated and each individually illustrated with a description of battle from Chinese history. These historical examples shed new light on the often enigmatic formulations of the ancient strategists on subjects such as Strategic Power, Defense, Vacuity, Spirit, and Victory. Acclaimed translator and Chinese military specialist Ralph Sawyer adds his own thoughtful commentary, deepening the reader's understanding of the intricacies of Chinese strategic thought.

The unknown author of these hundred short chapters has left a different and worthwhile contribution to military history. Sawyer, the modern commentator, has made it even more relevant to the contemporary reader.

Each chapter has three parts. The first is almost always a brief reference to Sun Tzu, Ssu-ma Fa, or some other classic of strategy and tactics. The second part reaches into China's long written history to find historical examples of each precept.

Although phrased as a commentary on older texts, the reader should remember the rigid social structure and respect for ancient wisdom common in the Ming dynasty (when this was written). New ideas were suspect, even irreverent to the extent that they challenged the classics. Instead, new ideas were concealed as commentaries on the established wisdom. One should not dismiss these commentaries as just a rehashing of texts that were a thousand years old even then.

The third part of each chapter is Sawyer's modern addition, sometimes longer than both traditional parts together. Sawyer uses these notes to explain historical content and to point out relevance to the modern world. The real value of Sawyer's commentary, however, is its extensive citation of other Chinese military classics. He will often provide the whole passage to which a chapter alludes, as well as related passages from other texts. I found this very helpful, especially when Sawyer quoted classics that are little-known or inaccessible to English speakers.

The indices are good, providing reference by topic, by proper names referenced, and by the eight classics references for which commentaty is provided. There was no bibliography, though, a real loss. I would very much like to read the Wu Tzu or other unfamiliar titles named, but I'll have to hunt those down on my own.

This shouldn't be your first book on classical Chinese strategy, but it will be a welcome addition to any serious collection.

Definite keeper, where's my Hardcover?!?!?!?.......2001-09-06

This book is fantastic. Each chapter is a stategy illustrated by historical examples, followed by authors comments. Sawyer does not ruin the historical accounts with his own take on the interpretation of the event. This is happily so unlike the myriad of crummy interpretations of 'Art of War' and 'Book of 5 Rings' available, polluted by the translators' opinions and biases. This is a testament to Sawyer as a scholar 1st and foremost.

He provides insight and opinions in his comments after the strategies and examples, but lets you draw your own conclusions about the relevence and applicability while you read each short strategy.

I have been able to apply these strategies to real life situations in dealing with individuals and groups. It has helped me in business and personal relationships by drawing parallels between the strategies and applying them figuratively. It has also helped me in a literal sense in mundane theaters like computer gaming as well.

I want this in hardcover!!! I will pay for it!!!

The book provides an interesting perspective into the many dimensions of strategy. It gives an introduction, a historical example, and discussion of each section. It is up to the flexibility and insight of the reader to make full use of the information provided.

100 enjoyable chapters on unconventional thinking.......2000-08-19

Concicise and entertaining, short one to two page essays. Each chapter has 1) a forword explaing the strategy, 2) a historical battle examples, 3) and a commentary on how to best apply the strategy. Easy to read, allowing you to enjoy one strategy at time without having to go back over previous chapters. This book reiterates in an entertaining way what B.H. Liddell Hart says in his classic book on military 'Strategy.' I recommened this book to everyone who wishes to view the world from an unconventional point of veiw.

This book suits a graduate course in basic management control systems very well. It is easy to read, with short and clear-cut chapters containing the essentials. This may be its only disadvantage: Sometimes it is too short and plain in its discussions. The cases makes the book well suited for case based courses.

You gotta know Scherr ..........2001-01-07

I presume that the other reviews from "WV" are from students at West Virginia University where Frederick Scherr is a professor. I had Dr. Scherr as an instructor for finance, and he has to be experienced to understand the book. Scherr knows his stuff very well, and he presents it with engineering accuracy (because he has a BS and MS in engineering - chemical?) and the cases come from, I believe, some of his previous work experiences in the chemical industry.

I graduated 12 years ago, so the version of this book that we used was the working transcript. Actually, I believe I still have two of those somewhere .... We had to go to Kinko's to purchase blurry photocopies made from a dot-matrix printed copy in draft mode with a ribbon that needed changing. A working transcript at that stage is always loaded with errors, and the quality of the print was beyond difficult to read.

I'm sure the published version of this book improved a great deal.

For 25 years, theory about the causes of, and possible solutions to, the problem of unemployment has been dominated by Phelps and Friedman's natural rate of unemployment hypothesis. This postulates that the equilibrium rate of unemployment consistent with steady inflation is determined by structural variables: sustainable reductions in unemployment can be achieved only by measures to change underlying microeconomic structures, such as benefit and pay bargaining systems. Belief in the hypothesis has faltered since the 1980s, the hypothesis being unable to explain the dramatic upward shifts in European unemployment rates. These essays reflect upon the fundamental structures underlying the hypothesis, assess the related evidence, and look forward, suggesting possible modifications. In contrast to the single rate postulated by the natural rate hypothesis, several of the contributors propose that there are ranges of unemployment rates consistent with steady inflation.
