Book Description
Luis Barragan is an icon of contemporary architecture-a genius of color, light, walls, the garden, the tower, the rooftop, he has influenced an entire generation of current architects, not least of them his one-time collaborator Ricardo Legorreta. Admirers of his work note its serenity, its harmony. In 1979, when Barragan was presented the Pritzker Prize, his work was referred to as "a sublime act of the poetic imagination." It is this aspect of Barragan's work that is presented in The Life and Work of Luis Barragan, a biographical portrait that reveals Barragan as a master of what he himself called "emotional architecture."
Barragan's impressions and influences are recorded here, from his early years in Gudalajara to his work in Mexico City, and his highly inspiring travels in the Alhambra, the villages of Greece, and northern Africa. His rejection of the concepts of Le Corbusier and the International Style, and his embrace of the ideas of the French intellectual, painter, and landscape architect Ferdinand Bac provided valuable framework for understanding both the theory and form of Barragan's oeuvre.
Brilliant color photographs record Barragan's vibrant work as it has never been seen before, including generous interior shots of such varied projects as Casa Cristo in Guadalajara, and Casas Galvez, Egerstrom, and Meyer, all from his Mexico City years. Barragan was perhaps first and foremost a landscape architect, and this book spotlights his gardens, and his vanguard, landscape-based approach to architecture itself-centered on the close relationship between landscape, color, and architecture in Mexico and the other lands that inspired him.

Different approach to an unknown Barragan.......2006-11-04
The book is full of highly artistic and unique photos, taken at different seasons and through many years, showing an unknown side of Barragan, far away from other books or writings. It was written by authors that knew Barragan personally, fact that enhances its uniqueness and versatility.
Good effort but there's a better alternative.......2000-06-18
If readers are looking for a concise book on Luis Barragan, this book is NOT it. Rather, you are urged to look at Luis Barragan: The Complete Works which not only have architecture pictures but also detailed discussions by few academics & even Luis Barragan acceptance speech of his winning of the prestigious Pultizer prize. But if readers are just a pedestrian reader on architecture like me, you would appreciate this book for it contains beautiful photography (sometimes, pictures of the same thing taken from different angles) & GENERAL discussions upon Luis' refusal to conform to any particular architecture movements but rather following his vision of how an architecture should be depicted. He's not only an architect but an architect & artist combined, a sensible & faithful individual to his culture, core values. The readers are also given a quick overview of his exit from Guadalajara & his rising from ashes in Mexico, inspirations that he attained from his trip to the Meditarrenean & Africa (namely Morroco), his relationships & eventual downfall with artists that he worked with. Overall, a good effort but superficial for the academics.

An enjoyable reference.......2003-09-03
I have found this book to be an excellent reference for those artists, such as myself, who have long used acrylics but have tried dabbling with watercolors, but with not as much success. Daniel Chard gives a wonderful approach to using acrylics transparently and achieving a watercolor-type effect - without the drawbacks of either medium. His section and examples of brushwork (and finger techniques) alone were worth the price of the book. Excellent composition material is a bonus.

For beginners of landscape painting.
A Hearty Meal.......2000-07-29
This book is easily one of the all-time great books on painting. It is not just a book on highly 'realistic' landscape painting in acrylics, rather it is an application of analytical thinking about painting to the particular problems of landscape. In a market saturated by fluffy and useless how-to books, this dense and meaty offering is one of the few that stand out as a must-have for anyone who is serious about representational painting.
The section on composition is one of the most complete overviews of the subject I have seen to date; it includes topics such as unity and variety, the effects of 3-D illusion on composition (or vice-versa), the dynamics of the rectangle, left-right 'reading', and some deep analysis of Chard's own paintings. In other sections Chard discusses his rationale for representational painting, the concept of 'analogous' imagery, viewer's expectations for visual space, and details his methods and working processes. Each topic is covered with wide-ranging and carefully considered throughness.
Chard communicates his insights with great clarity and detail. As a result this is a real reader's book, it has a lot of text in it along with the illustrations. If large paragraphs make your eyes glaze over you may find this book daunting, but struggle on and you will most likely find that the information and food for thought were worth it.
Chard's book may not answer all your questions about painting, but it will provide a great deal of food for thought, and a pattern of principles and analysis that can be applied to a wide range of challenges and mediums in the visual arts...
Analytic approach to realistic landscape painting.......1998-07-31
This book presents a thoughtful, analytic, and sometimes esoteric, approach to landscape composition and painting. The example plates are gorgeous and support the text. The step by step plates clearly demonstrate the approach. The close ups show fine brush and color techniques. The final chapter presents a series of exercises for the reader to try. I did and improved my techniques considerably.
