A Realistic Approach To Animal Photograhpy.......2000-05-17

The reality of life is that few of us can spend a carear in the field in pursuit of the cover shot for National Geo., but we can go to the local zoo etc. and create presentable images that we can be proud of, and perhaps sell. This book provides some of the guidelines. Nobody can give you the skills, this will only come after you apply yourself and expose a few miles of film.

Mr. Havelin's writing flows well, it is written with enough down to earth wit to keep a sense of reality. This I find rare in photography related publishing, and I credit him and the publisher for this.

The author offers useful advice, and demonstrates with his own work, and he is not afraid to show some of his shots that didnt come out perfect, to illustrate his point.

Shooting Animals With A Camera: From Awful to Awesome.......2000-05-17

I wished I had read "Practical Manual of Captive Animal Photography" several decades ago before filling albums with numerous truly awful photos showing animals or parts of them in zoos, aquariums, gardens, and on farms. By reading Havelin's newest photography book, I discovered why many of my animal photos leave a lot to be desired and what I can try to improve. Among the many pluses of the book are understandable advice, awesome and awful photos illustrating how to photograph and how not to, a colloquial writing style, print one can read without a magnifying glass, and, this was definitely not expected, ideas for locations to visit. I especially found it valuable to learn about photographing through glass and fences. For example, on page 54 in the book are several photos of a red panda in Zoo Atlanta. The first photo could have been mine. One can see a lot of metal fencing and ask: "Where is the animal?" In the last photo is only the red panda - no cage, no fence, and no wall. I am looking forward to follow Havelin's directions: "Look for right angle to minimize glare, and the correct depth of field to remove disturbing fence elements in front of and behind the subject creature."

Policy Uncertainty and Risk presents a contribution to risk analysis and risk management in public policy and management at large. Special emphasis is put on the utilization of scientific knowledge by decision-makers in instances where knowledge in both spheres of science and administration is highly uncertain and contested. The book therefore contributes a model of science-practitioner interaction in a policy area of strong current relevance.
The perspective is a realist constructivist one, which means that risk and policy are taken to be socially predicated insofar as we can choose and change the way we define and interact with its practices. It is realist insofar as we continually use such constructions to re-define and re-structure the world we live in.
Although essentially theory-driven and conceptually oriented, the authors develop their argument for a new interpretation of policy-relevant science through a number of pressing case studies. These studies include the recent BSE/CJD crises in the UK, the introduction of Marine Protected Areas in Sweden, and the current practices surrounding risk management in corporate bodies.
Drawing on empirical cases and theoretical explication, the book provides a number of suggestions as to how risk analysis and risk management may be more properly conceived of both from a practitioner as well as from an academic point of view.

The best so far !.......2001-06-02

Firstly let me begin by stating that I have read this work cover to cover three times and several chapters many times more. It is the best I have read to date and I have nearly every work (in English) on the Caspian - in regards to energy expliotation there is, so I do speak from a position of knowledge.

Although printed in early 2000 I did not get my copy until mid 2000. Compared to other works this is in a league of its own - both for content and the broad range of contributors. One of the things that bug me about works on the Caspian region is that IRan is relegated to a passing comment - because America's influence or its pipeline mentality seems to overcome other writers. This does work does not. Iran is central through this work.

Divided into 5 sections, with 16 chapters, this work natually being an edited work allows the reader to pick and choose sections or chapters to read. I particularly enjoyed the emphaise throughout the work on Iran - it was even-handed in its measure - which is what you would expect.

As with other works there is a section on the legal perspective of the Caspian and the chapter by Mirfendereski is very good - providing insights I have not come across in other works or articles.

The work is nearly 300 pages in length including notes, and was worth all of the $..... I paid for it - hardcover and a falling Australian Dollar did not help. This book is for those already with a reasonable knowledge of the region and with that in mind other introductory works such as Amineh or Crossiant/Bulents works may be better suited for the novice - of course there will always be overlaps between similar works but by far this is the best yet.

Part of the reason why I enjoyed this work so much is that it focuses on littoral communities of the region (and a brief chapter to America as well)(can't get away from them ) so in that regard it is not an all in one compendium, and there is a strong emphasis throughout the work on the actual Caspian Sea itself - as well as the energy reserves. It is a good book and worth the money.

This book is extremely timely. It addresses central issues facing trade unions at the workplace, taking a contrast between manufacturing, privatised utilities and the public services. It opens up key debates about the future of unions in major capitalist countries. The author insists that any understanding of trade unionism today must take the workplace as a starting place. It is here workers experience the contradictions of international restructuring and local imperatives. The book raises these issues in a sharp and focused way and should be read by commentators and trade unionsists around the world.
