Book Description
In this book, Robert Harbison offers a novel interpretation of what architectural theory might look like. The title is an echo of Wallace Stevens's "Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird." Like the poem, Harbison's work is a composite structure built of oblique meanings and astonishing shifts that add up to an engaging portrait--in this case a portrait of architecture in which use, symbol, and metaphor coexist.
The chapter titles indicate Harbison's themes, all of which bear parallel, implied, or tangential relations to architecture: Sculpture, Machines, the Body, Landscape, Models, Ideas, Politics, the Sacred, Subjectivity, and Memory. The journey through the chapters is roughly a journey from the physical to the metaphysical, a journey that is at once poetic, technical, and philosophical. Harbison examines his subjects with as few preconceptions as possible, taking familiar concepts and stripping away all associations until they become strange, producing ideas that are refreshing and new for architecture. The book straddles the ground between the intellect and the senses, leading the reader beyond the realm of theory and practice into the universe of the imagination, where "space" is experienced as something touched, seen, and thought.

I wish I was clever enough to find 13 reasons to read this book, however it only takes one. It is the single most important that one can read to critically investigate the environment(s) that we live, work, and practice in. The author masterfully articulates 13 ways of doing, without limiting himself to style or functionality of space/ place. In a word it is brilliant!

I live in the Middle East and good instructional art books are hard to come by. A fellow student bought this book while visiting in the states and brought it to class. Well, of course; all the students loved it. We found it so easy to follow and have attempted several of her projects. Which have turned out wonderful. We say here in Jordan, "Shur-kran", meaning thank you, Hazel Soan! You have helped a whole class of, eager for knowledge, students! I recommend it to everyone who wants to start in the watercolor medium. Now I am purchasing my own copy.

Alwyn Crawshaw's techniques simplify your paintings.......2005-01-09
I admire Mr. Crawshaw's techniques in many ways; he gives you methods to simplify how you paint people, boats and animals. He's known as an equestrian painter, so it's a bit disappointing that there isn't more in this book about painting horses (perhaps he's leaving that for a separate volume.) I also find Crawshaw's palette a bit dull--he goes for the natural look of muted greens and browns and blues--very realistic but not as exciting as the bright tropical colors that are now more in vogue in painting. This is in the true English tradition of watercolor. Nevertheless, I find that I've learned more by doing Crawshaw's exercises for painting things like trees and sheep than from many other books or videos. To rate this book; visually--it's not so exciting. Technique-wise, if you try out some of these techniques, your brushwork for certain details and compositions will become simpler and less worked-over. Recommended for that reason.

"SOUNDS OF MOVIES - Interviews with the Creators of Feature Sound
Tracks" by Nicholas Pasquariello

Nicholas Pasquariello has been writing about the technical side of filmmaking for a variety of periodicals for about twenty years, and he
now has published a valuable book that collects together interviews with thirteen individuals who are all prominent in the world of film sound.
The interviews span the last thirteen years, published originally in Mix magazine and others, and the interviews included here seem to have been
chosen for their timelessness, a wise choice. While this book seems aimed largely at the academic film community, there's sufficient depth
in the contents so as to be of value to "working professionals" in the film industry.
The book is divided into two main sections about production and post-production. The production interviews are with prominent production mixers; the section on post is with re-recording mixers,
sound editors, and "sound designers" who wear both hats. The balance is devoted to absorbing interviews on director/composer collaboration, the
archival restorations of 'Othello' and 'Lawrence of Arabia', and the perils of translating and dubbing foreign-language versions abroad.
In the production section the interviews are with Chris Newman on 'A Chorus Line' and 'Mosquito Coast', Drew Kunin on the rigors of getting
usable sound on racing yachts for Carrol Ballard's 'Wind', Ivan Sharrock on 'The Last Emperor', Simon Kaye on 'Platoon', Tod Maitland on 'The Doors', and Nelson Stoll on the marriage of documentary and feature techniques and the politics of the job.
It's an interesting and highly varied group of films, with an equally interesting and varied group of mixers talking. If you've never worked
in production, or if you've ever complained about the production mixing on a show you're working on, these interviews can be most enlightening.
You'll gain some appreciation for the difficult position these folks are in. Trying to reconcile the goal of good sound quality with the conflicting demands of preoccupied directors, camera and lighting needs, difficult locations, and budget realities, all the while "looking good
in dailies", is clearly revealed to be a most elusive objective.
In the post-production section are interviews with Mark Berger on re-recording 'Amadeus' and 'Mosquito Coast', Richard Beggs on sound
design for 'Cotton Club' and 'Tucker', Leslie Shatz on sound design for 'Mishima', Mark Mangini on sound effects for 'Star Trek IV', and Mike
Minkler on re-recording 'Explorers'. Like the production mixing section, the group of films here is quite varied and the personalities of the interviewees are often quite engaging.
The post section devotes most of its length to the interviews with Bay Area professionals. As a Hollywood sound editor, I was taken aback by
this at first, but then realized that this proves to be a bit of a virtue, because the multiple-hat wearing of Richard Beggs and Leslie Shatz allows the interviews to roam over the entire sound-post process, presenting a cohesive picture of what really goes on beyond the picture editing room. Perhaps this Bay Area weighting is a reflection of the tendency for many filmmakers who appreciate the value of collaboration to be attracted to the less-compartmentalized working methods there.
It proves useful to read about the difficult location sound recording on 'Mosquito Coast', and then read later about the ramifications of those
early decisions when Alan Splet and Mark Berger were trying to edit and mix the tracks. Where this book could be improved would be if there
more of these linkages of interviews. Also, when techniques with a long history are discussed in the interviews (such as dance foley for 'Chorus
Line') an internal author's reference about that history would be enlightening (as in: "Fred Astaire and others were doing this in
1934"). But these are minor quibbles, somewhat made up for by the presence of fascinating 'bonus' interviews with Vittorio Storaro and Dean Tavoularis on the cinematography and production design for 'Tucker'.
There's precious little published material on the working and creative processes of film sound, and this book helps to fill the void. Check it
out.

China is an incredible writer: unpretentious, witty, smart & incisive. I wish I had read her zine when I was starting to parent 9 years ago, but I'm glad I can read it now. Unlike authors of so called "alternative" or "punk" (ex: Alternadad or Mamarama) parenting books, China has walked the walk.

Personally, I loved this book. It is a good read for any anarchist,punk,or comic lover. The book takes a different approach to expressing some "not-so-mainsteam" ideas. There is some good old comic humor and some things that make you think. i started using this book with my students who are learning english. they found the example letters very useful for reference when writing for their jobs. i really appreciated the excercises that are included to learn how to write right the first time. we both liked that it was a 'real book' and not one just for ESL.

PREFACE In writing this introduction to the second edition of my first book, let me steal a paVaj aph from the preface of a book written by another. Joseph Conrad, Polish-born English novelist, in the year, peculiarly enough, that I made my ap pearance on this earth, wrote My task, which I am trying to achieve, is by the power of the written word, to make you hear, to make you feel it is, before all, to make you see That is your task, too, whenever you write a letter to make your reader see your product or proposition so vividly that he will be receptive tc any reasonable action you propose. The reading of this book will, I hope, make that task easier. If it does nothing else, it will certainly make you letter conscious and that in itself is worth while. Letter writing today is a profession, an art. Dont take it too much for granted. Dont just dash off a so-called sales letter and send it out, hoping it will do an effective job or hurriedly and thoughtlessly dictate a routine business letter, satisfied if it just answers another. Theres power in a good letter and not to take advantage of it is an economic waste. Remember that by their very customs and traditions people are vitally interested in letters. Of all the different PREFACE kinds of mail received, they are invariably opened first, and thats true whether the address on the envelope is handwritten or typewritten. So your letter has a decided advantage to begin with. It is almost certain to be opened and shall we say scanned Whether it is read, assimilated and acted upon depends to a large extent on the way you have put your thoughts together, on the construction of your message. If you want to write better letters friendlier, more convincing, more resultful I believe the careful reading of this book will help you. It wasnt prepared for the professional letter writer, but rather for the many thousands of men and women who perhaps write good letters now, but who could write outstanding letters with a little of the right kind of study and application. If I have done a good job, you should be able to apply immediately the information this book con tains to your own individual problems.
