Tony Smith is primarily known as a sculptor of large abstract constructions, which he made during the last 20 years of his life. Less well known is the fact that he was also an architect and a painter--a true Renaissance man. In the mid-1930s he studied drawing, painting, and anatomy at the Arts Student League in New York, later moving to Chicago, where he took courses in architecture and design at the New Bauhaus. Subsequent work with Frank Lloyd Wright led him to establish his own architectural firm in the 40s. Becoming disheartened with the role of architect, he returned to painting, and in the late 50s found his ultimate calling in sculpture. This volume provides the first complete overview of the career of this unique figure in the postwar American artistic vanguard. Published in conjunction with a 1998 exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, this book presents Smith's life and work in all mediums; thoughtful, critical essays; an illustrated chronology; a section of writings, interviews, and letters by Smith, his family, and his friends; and a selected bibliography and exhibition history.

The illustration work is fantastic probably the best in its field in the world, however I just lost a bid on this on ebay - the winning bid was £5.20! - the ebay copy was in perfect condition although used as photos were provided of it - so theres no way this book is worth $147.00 in used condition and paperback - total rip off! ( unless its wrapped and bound in gold or something....)

I found this book to be very absorbing but definitely intended for the mature reader (17 and older.) If you plan to purchase it for a school library, be sure to read it in its entirety first. Several of the writings contain strong language and explicit sexual material.

Recently, the central bank of China lent part of its enormous reserve of foreign exchange to two of its largest banks in difficulty. This seemed to be a very clever policy response since the capital infusion did not affect the money supply nor sacrifice the currency peg as has traditionally been the case. This paper considers the viability of this policy and asks why other Southeast Asian countries with large reserves of foreign exchange did not adopt a similar approach to combat their bank problems in the 1990s.

Japanese labour market practices have attracted considerable attention in the West for two reasons. Firstly, innovative human resource management (HRM) is responsible for the development of competitive industrial sectors. Secondly, inner flexibility of the labour market has produced low unemployment and wage flexibility. This study provides a thorough investigation of the distinctive features of Japanese internal labour markets (ILM) and occupational labour markets (OLM), closely analyses important changes in ILM and considers future developments. It combines a mixture both of descriptive and of theoretical and econometric work and builds on the authors' well known previous research in this area. Also contains a detailed case study and the econometric analysis of HRM policies used by a large Japanese firm. Although the focus is on Japanese ILM, international comparisons are made throughout, mainly with reference to Europe and the United States.
