This new edition of "9 Heads" is the re-statement of the author's approach to the subject of black and white drawings, incorporating the most developed thinking and views, both in terms of what the end product should look like, and how best to achieve it. "9 Heads" also presents a different style of finished drawing, one where figures are usually more fleshed-out and where garment fabrics are more rendered than in the drawings of the previous edition. This edition has been extended in scope as that together with "Colors for Modern Fashion" the two books constitute all the elements of modern fashion drawing from Beginners through to Advanced.

Great book for fashion illustration beginners and an excellent book for anyone with fashion illustration/art experience. Glossy pages,rendering,shading folds etc,. Up to date illustration sketches; many sketched poses,and flats in this book. My classmates were borrowing this book from me during class. You won't regret this purchase. This book is really heavy;Cover is made cheap. The front cover has fragile thick plastic corners that tear.

This was a gift for my daughter. This item came very quickly and in really good shape for being used. My daughter is a talented woman and she has designed clothes since she was 5 yrs old. This book is incredible for her to continue her gift and talent in designing.
Best sketching book out there!!.......2006-12-23
I was really weary of buying this book because of the price, but I actually got it for a discounted price and it's SO worth it. It's a huge book and this new edition includes chapters on men and children. Personally I got it because I'm applying to F.I.T in NYC and I need help with my sketching skills (I have none). I found this book to be the best that I have seen and it has helped me so much. The instructions and the "9 heads" theory (9 heads make up the human body) are very simple and easy to understand. I love that she uses the "box" method to help you draw faces. I have never been an artist and this book helped me to draw some fabulous fashion sketches. SO worth the money if you really need to learn to sketch for fashion design.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were measured in smoke samples from wood carbonization during charcoal production, in both particulate matter (PM) and gaseous phases. Samples were acquired using a medium-volume air sampler at 1.5m distance from the furnace. Particle-bound PAH were collected on Fluoropore polytetrafluoroethylene filters and gas-phase PAH were collected into sorbent tubes with XAD-2 resin. PAH were extracted with dichloromethane-methanol and analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results showed total emission from the furnace of 26@mg/m^3 for the 16 PAH and 2.8@mg/m^3 for the 10 genotoxic PAH (from fluoranthene to benzo[g,h,i]perylene). High emission of 16 PAH in the first 8h of wood carbonization was detected (64@mg/m^3; 56% of the total emission). Associated with PM, 11% of the total emission of 16 PAH (in both phases) and 60% of 10 genotoxic PAH were found. Relative ratios (for example, [Phe]/[Phe]+[Ant]) for the PAH of the same molecular weight were obtained and compared with the published data. The concentrations of benzo[a]pyrene equivalent (BaP"e"q) were estimated using the list of toxic equivalent factors suggested by Nisbet and LaGoy, 1992. The values of 0.30 and 0.06mg/m^3 were obtained for the total concentrations of BaP"e"q in PM and gaseous phase, respectively. 30 and 0.06mg/m^3 were obtained for the total concentrations of BaP"e"q in PM and gaseous phase, respectively.

The aim of the present study is to obtain safe and pure drinking water from surface water, which has been polluted with pesticide. Pesticide contaminated surface water samples were prepared by spiking commonly used pesticide, Isoproturon, in different surface water samples collected from different parts of India. Attempts were made to evaluate the efficiency of different adsorbents in removing pesticide from distilled water. Dosages and contact time of the selected adsorbent, pH were varied in order to optimise the treatment parameters for maximum removal of pesticide. Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm were also established in this adsorption study. Coagulation and then adsorption studies were performed on pesticide contaminated surface water as pre-treatment to reduce membrane fouling. Nanofiltration was done on pre-treated water in a test cell in dead end mode. The NF permeate was analysed for pH, turbidity, TDS, COD, TOC, conductivity, hardness, and colony count. RO was suggested after NF if necessary. The quality of NF/RO permeate water compared well with the potable water of our laboratory.

Biomass slurry fuel (BSF) production has recently been developed as a natural energy for the conversion of solid biomass into fuel. In addition to using fuel, filtrates from BSF production may also serve a chemical source with several organic compounds. There is an increasing interest in the research and application of biomass-based filtrates. In this study, fungicidal and termiticidal properties of filtrates from BSF production using sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) and acacia (Acacia mangium) wood were evaluated in laboratory decay and termite resistance tests. Wood blocks treated with the filtrates showed increased resistance against brown-rot fungus, Fomitopsis palustris. However the filtrates from sugi wood processed at 270 ^oC which contained less phenolic compounds than the other filtrates were effective against white-rot fungus, Trametes versicolor. Phenolic compounds of filtrates seemed to play a role in the decay resistance tests however the filtrates did not increase the durability of the wood blocks against subterranean termites Coptotermes formosanus. Despite high acetic and lactic acid content of the filtrates, vanillin content of the filtrates may have served as an additional food source and promoted termite attack. It can be concluded that filtrates with phenolic compounds from lignin degradation during BSF production can be considered for targeted inhibition of brown-rot.

The study seeks to demonstrate the potential role that industrial ecology could play towards energy poverty reduction and environmental conservation in Kenya through sustainable charcoal production and consumption. This is achieved through an exploration of the application of the life cycle management (LCM) concept that identifies various opportunities for technological intervention for energy and environmental conservation and reduction of material and energy losses. It also identifies opportunities for income generation at various stages of the product's life cycle; an aspect critical in poverty reduction in developing countries. The study finds that applying LCM in the charcoal trade in Kenya can deliver social, economic and environmental benefits to developing country communities and should, therefore, be promoted. However, appropriate legal, policy and institutional frameworks must exist in these countries for this to occur.

Great resource for Rus' Illuminations. Good printing. The notations of where the pieces of illuminations are from are incredibly helpful. For begining illuminators, realize that the book only gives portions of illuminations and not the whole manuscript. Also, the color scheme seems to be a little off when comparing these pictures to the original manuscripts. There are a couple of places where there is a use of one-tone color instead of a two-toned color and the metallics don't come through very well.

An Interesting Elseworlds Book.......2005-03-14
I, Joker is an interesting Elseworlds book set in the future. Long forgotten is the Batman of the past; the future Gotham city worships Batman as a god. Told largely from the perspective of the Joker, this narrative is a rather unusual twist from the normal Batman stories. The artwork is solid, though idiosyncratic at times.
One of the principle problems, however, is that the narrative is so bizarre that many readers are likely to be turned off in the first few pages. If you are a big fan of the more unusal and strange Elseworld stories, you'll probably enjoy I, Joker. That having been said, other than a unique storyline and a few interesting revelations along the way, don't expect much in the way of a sophisticated Batman story. I, Joker lacks the political commentary of artists such as Miller, it lacks the character depth found in some of the better Batman comics, and its oddness will prevent it from holding the status of a classic Batman narrative.
Overall, a solid read, but be prepared for an offbeat narrative. This Batman story is not for everyone.

Humour is a key feature, laughter a central element, disrespect a vital textual strategy of postcolonial transcultural practice. Devices such as irony, parody, and subversion can be subsumed under an interventionist stance and have accordingly received some critical attention. But literary and cultural postcolonial criticism has been marked by a restraint verging on the pious towards the wider significance and functions of laughter. This collection transcends such orthodoxies: laughter can constitute an intervention but it can also function otherwise. The essays collected here take an interest in the strategic use of what can loosely be termed laughter in all its manifestations. Examining postcolonial transcultural practice from a range of disciplinary and methodological perspectives, this study seeks to analyse laughter and the postcolonial in their complexity. I am a Music Therapist working with different populations. I havebeen using the 1983 edition of The Melody Book and was delighted to find a new edition, incorporating old favorites and adding new ones. The songs/melodies are wonderful selections, all singable, in appropriate keys, and are of such wonderful variety! As I looked through this book time after time I thought, "THERE that song is! I've been looking and looking--and now I have found it!" I marvel at how much work must have gone into collecting these songs. The background notes are interesting and add to the enjoyment. Various movements/dances are in easy-to-follow format. As in the 1983 book, the index is also great! I wish I could afford to give this book to my music therapist friends. I will certainly recommend it!
