Classic Techniques for watercolour Landscapes.......2007-07-01
This is a good book and one of Ray Campbell Smiths best too that holds great loose brush work using a limited palatte. I highly recommend artists that like (fantastic) loose brush work in a low key style buy this book. Watercolor is a medium that is very easy to make complicated and over work. It's re-freshing to see an artist that can teach with ease this challenging medium watercolor.

Painting Coastal Scenes.......2007-07-01
Well known artist Ray Campbell Smith shows how to paint with watercolors a subject that can be a challange to paint yet in a easy to understand way. Painting Coastal scenes is a great book that will help the painter understand a much easier way to record the coastal life. Ray Campbell Smith is a another great artist much like Ron Ranson. The paintings in the book hold fantastic loose brush work in a low key style.
Dull subjects, ok tutorials.......2007-03-01
While I liked the tutorials in "Painting Coastal Scenes", I found the subject matter and color palettes dull indeed. However, this is English (clench your teeth when you say "English") watercolour and this means that natural light, and monotone scenes that reproduce a foggy landscape or waterscape are to be admired and emulated.
There were a few interesting tutorials on painting boats and shine on water, but very few that dealt with how to represent marshy plantlife on gleaming water. This book seems to be more suited to the OTHER side of the pond. If you live on an estuary (as I do) you will need to check some other sources of painterly expression...unless you happen to like Mr. Smith's style of watercolor. I found it dull and boring, though truthful to its subject. I was looking for a different way to represent this subject and this book simply did not inspire me at all.

Stimulating analysis for intermediate watercolourists.......2000-06-06
This book gives analyses of dozens of the artist's luminous watercolours. Each painting is given a full page, with a facing page of details on the painting of the picture. The book is organized by type of subject. Unfortunately for beginners, this book doesn't have a guiding thread, and so I would recommend it for slightly more advanced painters. Fans of Ron Ranson should like this book.
bland.......2000-03-25
This book was a terrible disappointment. Although it is clear that he knows something of painting in watercolors, the samples given were bland. Spread across the entire page that blandness became stifling. This book would work for a true novice but any one else should steer clear.

This book is well organized and easy to use. As an ophthalmic photographer of 21 years duration I can attest to the quality of the information presented. I have personally purchased this book for my staff as a reference guide. The illustrations are excellent; albiet, they suffer a bit in the printing process. This is a must have for any ophthalmic photography suite!

EACH ILLUSTRATION TELLS A STORY.......2005-12-01
Tomas Giorello has always been one of the half-dozen or so artists whose work I've always looked forward to seeing in the many outstanding Gallery Girls collections from SQ Productions. Giorello simply illustrates some of the most beautiful women ever put on paper. In Inferno, Giorello gets his first collection all to his own that spotlights this amazing talent. Working proficiently in any genre including fantasy, horror, sci-fi and eroticism, Giorello displays an exceptional penciling ability whose work looks fabulous reproduced just from pencils.
I love the diversity and the sense of wonder and adventure of the pieces in Giorello's collection. Each illustration is a story all on its own. Page 6 features a nude female Indian shaman conjuring up a powerful buffalo spirit. Page 11 finds a nude blonde about to be come a sacrifice to some dark God. Note the detail of the glistening amulet on the robed priest and the whispy smoke of the candles. Page 12 depicts a frequent them in this book...gorgeous and scantily clad prehistoric women either riding, killing, or posing with prehistoric beasts, in this case the nude cavewoman is with a pair of sabre-tooth tigers.
Page 29 has what is probably my favorite work of the entire book with two nude warrior women, dressed in thigh-high leather boots and leather gloves and armed to the teeth. There's a great drawing of a Conan-esque barbarian with a huge battle axe and holding his trophy of several horned demon skulls strung at the end of a rope. Another great piece finds a bald, tribal woman, naked and tied to a burning stake as a monstrous snakes writhes around her. Page 61 has a female warrior in some dank, temple ruins surrounded by several decaying mummies.
I'd love to see Giorello's work done in a strip format as he seems to have strong story-telling skills. It's a great collection by a young artist who is yet just 31 years old and still improving his craft all the time. Brilliant!

Unemployment in Theory and Practice examines the effectiveness of current policies in the battle against unemployment. It uses a variety of country case studies to analyze the range of potential causes of and cures for unemployment and analyzes the complex nature of labor markets. This volume surveys the policy options and prescribes a mix of both macro and microeconomic policies to combat unemployment effectively. The contributors address the issue of policy targeted groups, including self-employed and older workers, and offer a comprehensive survey of key empirical findings. Issues considered include the rising number of self-employed in Australia and the labor market prospects for the aged in Germany. Particular labor market policies are discussed including the role of training and concerted international action through social democratic and trade union collaboration. The nature of unemployment in countries characterized by economic and social transformation, such as Bulgaria and Poland, is also analyzed in detail. The final section of the book is dedicated to wage policy and compensatory pay for the unemployed. It challenges the conventional neoclassical wisdom that wage constraints and limited trade union power will necessarily lead to labor market improvements and reduced unemployment. Evidence from Germany and South Africa is used to argue that collective action is a promising policy alternative. International in scope, the book will be essential reading for undergraduate and postgraduate students of economics, political economy, industrial relations and international economics. It will also appeal to professional economists, sociologists, political scientists, trade unionists and policy advisors.
