8th Edition:.......2006-03-06
This book is, as far as I can tell, the same as the 8th Edition. The only difference is the cover of the book. Page numbers are the same, pictures are all the same. I accidentally purchased the wrong book, but turned out it worked just fine and I paid 1/10th of the price.
too much highlighting.......2005-09-25
From the outside, the book appeared to be in great condition, but when I opened it, it was full of highlighting on almost every line of every page. I guess I will not be able to sell it back at a reasonable price. Had I known that it was full of highligting, I probably would not have purchased it.
Artforms by Preble and Preble.......2005-09-14
This is an exciting excellent book in the area of art and the forms that art is inpacted by. The illustrations to this book are exciting and colors are radiant.

Book Description
This book contains the first study of the musical culture of ancient Israel/Palestine based primarily on the archaeological record.
Noted musicologist Joachim Braun explores the music of the Holy Land region of the Middle East, tracing its form and development from its beginnings in the Stone Age, through the Bronze and Iron ages, and into late Roman timesa span of time ranging from the twelfth millennium B.C. to the fourth century A.D.
This is not a study of "music in the Bible" or music in "biblical times" but a unique, in-depth investigation of the historical periods and cultures that influenced the music of the region and its people. Braun combines significant archaeological findingsmusical instruments, terra cotta and metal figures, etched stone illustrations, mosaicswith evidence drawn from written (mainly biblical) texts and anthropological, sociological, and linguistic sources.
The portrait Braun assembles of this past musical world is both fascinating and innovative, suggesting a reconsideration of many views long accepted by tradition. Enhanced with approximately 200 illustrations, this exceptional work will be a valued resource for scholars, students, and general readers interested in the history of music, biblical studies, the ancient Near East, Jewish studies, and the Holy Land.
Customer Reviews:
Challenging Survey of Ancient Music in Israel/Pal........2004-10-15
This is well researched and documented look into music from Ancient Israel/Palestine. Braun exhaustively looks at the all the evidence, both archaeological, Biblical, etc. to gain a sense of the music of the times, but cultic, private and public.
His sense of always trying to weave the very best conclusions from all the evidence is convincing, although for most of us readers who do not have all the experience of reading the vast literature on the subject, one is lost as to most reasonable views. Braun helps by providing his own interpretations of such, and for this reason this work is helpful.
He breaks his investigation into timeframes: Stone AGe, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Hellinistic-Roman. These are each accompanied by one of the books strongest features besides the documented bibliography is the wealth of fine photos and drawings to illustrate the evidence as the commentary alludes.
About the evolution of musical expression.......2002-09-14
Music In Ancient Israel/Palestine: Archaeological, Written, And Comparative Sources by Israeli musicologist Joachim Braun is the first truly comprehensive study of the musical culture in Israel/Palestine in antiquity, as interpreted from the available archaeological record. An engrossing, informative, academically endowed exploration of the crafting of musical instruments and the evolution of musical expression as understood through evidence, as well as scholarly hypothesis stretching from the stone age to the Hellenistic-Roman period, Music In Ancient Israel/Palestine is a singularly amazing and very strongly recommended analysis which is a welcome an valued contribution to both Music History and Mideast Archaeology reference shelves and supplemental reading lists.

Book Description
“This volume gives evidence of many years of careful research and reflection. It is a sound study of the influence of the landowning southern aristocracy in state and national affairs. Members of the Clay family, like many others of the antebellum period, combined law, agriculture, and politics. They lived the ‘good life’ of the planter class and struggled to defend what they considered southern rights. The Clement C. Clays, father and son, both distinguished themselves in the U.S. Senate [and] the latter also served in the Confederate Senate.”--Mississippi Valley Historical Review
“The history of one of Alabama’s most distinguished families. . . . The author succeeds in the difficult task of making the past come alive again, and she does it by the skillful employment of a multitudinous number of sources.”--Alabama Review

Customer Reviews:
Great book for the 1920-1950 era........2006-11-06
I appreciate the writing style of this book published by The University
of Kentucky Press. It can be used in classrooms, I would think, and it
is also an enjoyable read for the casual reader who is interested in
Appalchian hill life in the first half of the 1900s. Van Willigen's
great narrative is well-complimented by some equally great black and
white photos. The author avoids using unnecessary, scholarly wording
and gets down to telling very interesting stories. Much use is made
of real wording from people he has interviewed.
For me, a Mid-westerner, this book is a must-have. I have an interest
in Appalachia and the Ozarks during the time period covered by this
book. It is a real "find" for me It will always have a place in my library.
Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to a new hardcover copy with a very nice dust jacket...you'll want to keep this book, too.

Book Description
We must do something to end the sleaze and dumbing-down of our culture. We must protect our children from all the garbage spewing out of Hollywood, TV, and from the violent video games-such as Pokemon. Christians, and all persons of good will (from all faiths) must join together in this crucial struggle against the drug-sex-violence culture that is enveloping us. The question is: What kind of society will we pass on to our children. One of tasteless vulgarity and scatological humor, or one that reflects the highest form of our Judeo-Christian heritage? The vulgarity and violence will not end until be begin to do something about it. We pray that this book will encourage its readers to help combat the Culture of Death by helping to build a Civilization of Love.
