5 out of 5 stars Finest humanities textbook I've seen.......2000-02-07

We used this textbook for a humanities survey course at my high school. My teacher said it was the finest he'd seen out of dozens, and after using it for his class, I have to agree. The art, maps, pictures, and everything help bring the past to life, and the text, while easy to read, says everything it needs to.

Finally, an art book which includes not just female artists but also art from more regions than Europe and Great Britain. This book is consice and factual in its assessment of art history. Considering that the basic appreciation of art is subjective and therefore opinion based, Stokstad keeps her personal views to herself and merely reflects the views of each period or region which affected art (and therefore art history) and why certain types were popular.
I would recomment this as a good expansive look at art history for students or art enthusiasts!

    2 out of 5 stars Class Book - no.......2007-06-02

I had to have this book for my Art History I class, and the second for part II of the class. This was not a book that encouraged me to look further into art history. From what I see the author put many of her own opinions into this book. That is not what makes the history. . .history is history, not opinion based ideas and theories. I would not reccomend this book for teachers that would like to inspire their students to pursue art history further. . . good variety of art work, just not good enough to appreciate it.

This children's book is well worth having (for adults, too)--I recently bought a second copy I found on sale at a local gift store, and would be glad for several more! It reminds me just a little of Wind in the Willows, with the anthropomorphic animals, but it's very much its own book. A rare, timeless voice--you wouldn't necessarily guess it was written within the last 50 years--and an uplifting, "kinder, gentler" vibe. You come away from this book with a good feeling. The author is also a gifted illustrator, and the book contains many of his drawings.

Cecil Younger, the protagonist of John Straley's series of mysteries set in Sitka, Alaska, isn't exactly a slacker, but as PIs go, he doesn't invest his job with a great deal of energy or effort. In Cold Water Burning, his sixth outing, Cecil stumbles with characteristic good nature through his assignment: to find a missing man he himself helped acquit of burning a boat and killing its occupants. The man's vanished, along with $50,000 a tabloid advanced him for his version of how the crime really went down.

A talented stylist whose prose sparkles like the sun on icy tundra, Straley excels at sketching unusually picaresque characters and painting brilliant word portraits of Sitka's beautiful and unforgiving setting. All the elements are in place for a satisfying thriller--the unsolved murders aboard the Mygirl, Cecil's role in helping the accused man go free, and the anger of the victims' survivors, which ultimately places our hero in the murderer's gun sights. But they take second place to Cecil's relationship with his most trusted mentor, George Doggy, and both the plot and the pace--not exactly a breakneck ride to begin with--suffer as a consequence. There's a brilliant scene right out of The Perfect Storm as Cecil heads out on a very large ocean in a very small boat to rescue Toddy, his autistic housemate. Straley manages to stitch the somewhat ragged edges of the plot together convincingly enough, but he may need to light a fire under Cecil if he expects him to continue to carry this series. --Jane Adams

              Book Description

Award-winning author of The Angels Will Not Care

P.I. Cecil Younger works out of Sitka, Alaska, a land of perfect beauty and not-so-perfect lives, where there is nothing more dangerous than an unsolved crime — except maybe the man trying to solve it....

Three years ago someone brutally killed four people on the scow Mygirl. In a crowded courtroom Cecil Younger helped the accused go free. Now the man charged with the Mygirl murders has disappeared. As a storm bears down on the Alaskan coast, two people connected with the case die in separate, sudden, and bizarre explosions of gunfire.

Younger is certain that someone is trying to finish the grisly job begun on the Mygirl three years earlier. But to prove it he must chase down a wooden sloop on the wind-lashed sea. Out in the lethal storm Younger will come face-to-face with the shocking truth that has already twisted so many lives — and now could end his own.

Cecil Younger is a private investigator in the town of Sitka, Alaska, and his greatest success as a defense investigator has left him suffering with nightmares of murder, fire and screaming children. Three years after the arson death of two adults and two children aboard a fishing scow, Cecil is still convinced Richard Ewers had nothing to do with the crime. But just as a raging storm heads straight for Sitka, Ewers, who was found innocent at a highly publicized trial, goes missing along with fifty thousand dollars and his wife Patricia asks Cecil to find him.

Cecil agrees, but when he doesn't act fast enough for Patricia, she takes matters into her own hands. Her attempt to interrogate a couple of the suspects ends in tragedy, leaving Cecil looking like the town villain, responsible for yet another miscarriage of justice. With almost everybody against him, Cecil doggedly plods on with tension building until another tragedy strikes the town. In a terrific conclusion to this five star tale, Cecil must battle not only a personal enemy but also the deadly forces of nature.

              5 out of 5 stars Local with a bias.......2003-04-09

I will start out declaring my bias: I lived in Sitka, Alaska for 7 years (now in Juneau for the past 3) and know John and the people of Sitka well. It is for this reason actually I thought I would share something, possibily of interest, with readers or potential readers of John's work.

It was quite obvious to me that John used his latest novel not only to entertain his readers, but to tip his hat to the people of Sitka who have provided him such good material and, more importantly, friendship over the past many years.

Many of the positive side characters and a few of the main ones in this latest novel are John's friends and neighbors. If not in total, at least enough to convey a "tip of the hat" from John to them. While this is not unique to this book or John as a writer, he references so many local people and in such a way that reading the book was like watching him shake hands and pat the backs of his fellow Sitkans.

I hope readers are able to pick up on this and that it allows them to feel perhaps even more immeresed in the Sitka by the Sea John describes so well.

I've been a fan of Straley's books after visiting Sitka, which is where he lives. I have read them all and without question this is the best yet! I love an unpredictable book, Straley does well in this fashion.

              4 out of 5 stars Couldn't Put It Down.......2003-01-04

This is one of those books you find yourself reading into the wee hours of the morning. Definitely a fun read and nonstop action.

I gave it only four stars because a truly great book has interesting ideas in addition to an interesting plot. In truth, I would have given it 4.5 stars if that was an option.

Straley's books are all consistently fun to read. The earlier novels are more rich with Native American folklore. This one has an intricate plot that keeps twisting this way and that all of the way until the end.

Read this book now. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Colder Water Burning is HOT!.......2002-10-17

Cold Water Burning by John Straley is the latest foray of Cecil Younger the private eye. In this outing, our intrepid hero (who is on the wagon) is caught up in a nasty investigation involving a murder of a family. The more Younger digs, the more bodies turn up. An excellent tale that reaches heights of poetic expression without being corny. By far the best novel of Straley's to date. Though all good, this one is quite touching. The descriptions of the folks of Sitka could be like that of any small town America.

              Book Description

During the evening of October 4, 1980, in the Pacific Ocean nearly 330 miles from Valdez, Alaska, a fire engulfed the engine room of the Prinsendam, a Holland America cruise ship carrying 320 passengers, most of them elderly. As the fire raged out of control, the ships captain faced the most dire decision of his career: Could he give the order to abandon ship in the face of a typhoon bearing down on the Prinsendams position? The story of this disaster at sea, and of the near-miraculous rescue that ensued, is recounted in heart-stopping detail in this powerful book. Drawing on extensive interviews with passengers, crew, and coast guardsmen, combined with exhaustive research, Burning Cold brings to life the last moments of the doomed cruise ship and the heroic efforts of the Coast Guardsmen who managed to transport every passenger to safety before the Prinsendam rolled and slid bow-first to the bottom on October 11. Told in the hour-by-hour style of Walter Lords Titanic classic, A Night to Remember, the book recreates the drama of one of the most memorableand successfulrescue operations ever to be conducted at sea.

A very interesting tale of disaster at sea. An enjoyable read with a few technical errors. Having been involved in this event as a member of the U. S. Coast Guard in Juneau at the time of the disaster I was very interested in the story. Overall a very good job on the part of the author.

4 out of 5 stars (Nurse) Opinion From One of the Last Off The Ship.......2007-06-08

The Story Of The Prinsedam is one that was long overdue. As the only Nurse onboard the Prinsedam as it caught Fire and Sank I would have greatly enjoyed sharing my accounts of what happened on that day to Mr. Jeffers. The Story is still very intriguing, swaying here and there from the truth. Overall I enjoyed reading about an event in my life that makes a really great story.

4 out of 5 stars a book about the "Prinsendam".......2007-04-17

The book was interesting. Why did it take so long to get a book on the "Prinsendam"?

The reason for four stars is that the author claims that this was "the greatest sea rescue of all time". No, it wasn't. THE GREATEST SEA RESCUE OF ALL TIME WAS IN JULY 1956 WHEN NEARLY 1,700 PEOPLE WERE SAVED FROM THE "ANDREA DORIA"

              2 out of 5 stars Blah.......2007-02-06

I was on the Woodrush at the time of this disaster. Nice to see a review by one of my old friends here, who felt the same way I do about this book. This truly was not only a Coast Guard response, but a Sitka response as well; everyone in that town turned out to help, be it hotelier, clothing store, or EMS (kudos to Anne and my former mother-in-law) This book just didn't seem to give much thought to the bigger picture. Purchase the book if you were not there, but my advice would be if you were involved in "The greatest maritime rescue in Coast Guard history," to simply keep your memories of this in your heart.

3 out of 5 stars Fire And Water Don't Mix.......2006-11-13

This book chronicles the October 1980 voyage of the Holland America liner "Prinsendam," the rescue of her passengers and crew, and her ultimate foundering in the Gulf of Alaska. The story certainly has enough substance to be enthralling and suspenseful, but I found the book to be overly wordy; references to authors like Shakespeare pointlessly bloat the book, there are frequent, over-dramatic bits of trivia inserted, and the author reminds the reader in approximately every other sentence that rescuing elderly passengers at sea in bad weather is a difficult proposition. (I got that concept the first time.) There is also seemingly limitless speculation on what movie stars would play what roles if the story was produced as a feature film, a device that I found extremely annoying.

The book relies on press clippings and passenger recollections more than the official Dutch accident investigation, which tends to color and sensationalize some of the events. There are also some factual errors and oversights both on the maritime and on the aviation rescue side of the house, which detracted from the book. The author attempts to personalize the accident with backstories about the passengers, which in many cases backfires: in particular the former New Jersey state senator (Fairleigh Dickinson) who is lionized by the author comes across as a pompous windbag, and appears more insufferable than heroic in my estimation. Characters are great for plot development; the right characters are critical.

One major flaw in the book, which tends to relegate it to the historical litterbin is the complete lack of a bibliography or reference citation system of any sort. In a nonfiction book of this nature, that is an absolutely unpardonable sin, and one that would essentially force any serious maritime historian to take the book with a grain of salt.

Having said all this, I awarded the book three stars: despite the faults, it is the only published account of a noteworthy sea disaster, and does teach valuable lessons about maritime safety on cruise ships. The "Prinsendam" disaster taught the cruise industry a lot about shipboard safety, and the ships of today are safer because of the accident. I recommend this book only with reservations: the storyline is occasionally gripping (though generally bloated with trivialities), but the account could, and should, have been much better. If you are interested in safety at sea, this is a quick and not uninteresting read, but understand that the safety systems in cruise liners have changed substantially since 1980, and many of the lessons learned have now been broadly incorporated in shipbuilding and procedural practices.

                              Book Description

For more than a quarter-century, despite the admirable excavations that have unearthed such humorists as John Gorman Barr and Marcus Lafayette, the most significant of the humorists from the Old Southwest have remained the same: Crockett, Longstreet, Thompson, Baldwin, Thorpe, Hooper, Robb, Harris, and Lewis. Forming a kind of shadow canon in American literature that led to Mark Twain's early work, from 1834 to 1867 these authors produced a body of writing that continues to reward attentive readers. The antebellum humorists provide an important look into the social and economic conditions that were prevalent in the southern "new country," a place that would, in time, become the Deep South. While previous books about Old Southwest humor have focused on individual authors, Justus has produced the first critical study to encompass all of the humor from this time period.

                                Book Description

The Old Southwest flourished between 1830 and 1860, but its brand of humor lives on in the writings of Mark Twain, the novels of William Faulkner, the TV series The Beverly Hillbillies, the material of comedian Jeff Foxworthy, and even cyberspace, where nonsoutherners can come up to speed on subjects like hickphonics. The first book on its subject, The Enduring Legacy of Old Southwest Humor engages topics ranging from folklore to feminism to the Internet as it pays tribute to a distinctly American comic style that has continued to reinvent itself.

To begin, the book focuses on frontier southern humor as manifested in works of Faulkner, Erskine Caldwell, Flannery O'Connor, Eudora Welty, Woody Guthrie, Harry Crews, William Price Fox, Fred Chappell, Barry Hannah, Cormac McCarthy, and African American writers Zora Neale Hurston, Ralph Ellison, Alice Walker, Ishmael Reed, and Yusef Komunyakaa. It then explores southwestern humor's legacy in popular culture—including comic strips, comedians, and sitcoms—and on the Internet. Many of the trademark themes of modern and contemporary southern wit appeared in stories that circulated in the antebellum Southwest. Often taking the form of tall tales, those stories have served and continue to serve as rich, reusable material for southern writers and entertainers in the twentieth century.

The Enduring Legacy of Old Southwest Humor is an innovative collaboration that delves into jokes about hunting, drinking, boasting, and gambling as it studies, among other things, the styles of comedians Andy Griffith, Dave Gardner, and Justin Wilson. It gives splendid demonstration that through the centuries southern humor has continued to be a powerful tool for disarming hypocrites and opening up sensitive issues for discussion.

                                    Book Description

In the antebellum South, the "plain folk" maintained social norms, ideals of honor, justice, gender, and liberty that were significantly distinct from town and planter gentility, and the humorists of the Old South captured this important distinction. Southwest humor flourished from the 1830s through the Civil War and this book provides a thorough investigation of the unique and innovative contributions of these humorists to the field of American literary realism, such as use of vernacular authenticity, complex character portraits, and the narrative technique of disclosure. Thus, when the Southwest humorists "tell about the South," they provide an endlessly entertaining and realistic representation of the vast complexities of the antebellum South and illustrate that the roots of literary realism were sown and nurtured on the southwestern frontier.

                                      Book Description

The humor of the Old South—tales, almanac entries, turf reports, historical sketches, gentlemen's essays on outdoor sports, profiles of local characters—flourished between 1830 and 1860. The genre's popularity and influence can be traced in the works of William Faulkner, Erskine Caldwell, Eudora Welty, Flannery O'Connor, and Harry Crews, as well as in Al Capp's Li'l Abner comic strip, the stand-up comedy of Jerry Clower and Jeff Foxworthy, and The Beverly Hillbillies.

This collection of essays includes some of the most significant writing on the topic to have appeared over the past twenty-five years, much of it revised and updated, as well as newly commissioned articles that bring fresh insights and employ new approaches to the subject.

“Forward-looking and intelligent. Rather than accepting the genre as an effusion of the region, the essays approach the materials as literary evocations of social and civil life.”—David E. E. Sloane, Executive Director of the American Humor Studies Association

What's amazing and valuable about this extremely entertaining book, which comes disguised as a manual for the challenged writer, is the humane, intelligent, sensible and charming persona behind every sentence. (Incidentally, it's probably true that a challenged writer is anyone who is making a decent effort.) There are life lessons in here -- about the value of being truthful and clear and kind. For example, Burckmyer tells you how to avoid being unintentionally mean or patronizing. E.g.: ``As you are surely aware, this seminar is available to corporate clients only." Presidents Clinton and Nixon might well have benefitted from a section in the same chapter that begins: ``When you must apologize, do it up front and in full." Burckmyer is not at all the rigid English teacher. For example, she shows how the passive voice may be useful in some cases, to protect someone. As in: `` `A mistake was made in Customer Service.' (It was Betsy's first day on the job: let's give her another chance. If this customer gets her name, she's toast.)" She's kind to readers (as well as to Betsy), gently leading us out of the traps we all get stuck in trying to undo a split infinitive, or rewrite a sentence that ends with a preposition or correct a dangling participle. She shows us in a nice way how to avoid the embarassment of being caught mixing metaphors. Why is this sensible advice only for business writers anyway? Poets need to be clear, historians need to be concise. Mystery writers need to avoid dangling participles. There are newspaper columnists and novelists out there who could benefit from everything in here. The lifesaver in the book, useful for anyone writing anything, is Appendix A, ``Getting Started and Following Through on a Writing Project." This isn't mushy believe-in-your-dream kind of stuff. One good practical piece of advice: ``Don't stop when you're in trouble." Burckmyer is pretty much, via print, the perfect teacher. Firm but gentle.

At last, a style manual with style!

Each chapter in this little gem of a book asks and answers a question on writing, everything from "Have I Written for my Audience?" to "Have I Sweated the Small Stuff?" Although geared to the workplace, the author's common sense approach to grammar and writing would work in any setting. Imagine the rules of grammar written in an informal style, very clearly, and often with wit (e.g., the "breath comma" and the "death comma")! Each chapter is filled with very good examples and with practical solutions to common writing problems. Each chapter also ends with helpful bulleted notes to summarize key points.

A very practical guide to help readers improve their writing, but also kind of fun to read!

Ms. Burckmyer has obviously mastered the art of writing herself, and can make her readers laugh while she also teaches them. This is a gem, and its scope is far beyond the world of business writing; anyone who seeks to communicate effectively in print will gain from reading it. And chuckle besides!

Pop this one into your briefcase or bag and hail the train to Boston! In one easy commute to the office, I scoured this book for trainstopping advice which fired me up for a dynamic written presentation once I hit my morning meeting. My boss borrowed it and hasn't returned it yet! ALL TOOLS FOR CLEARlY COMMUNICATED BUSINESS LANGUAGE AND WRITING COMES TOGETHER IN THIS BOOK - with humor, intelligence and the happy wisdom of a writer who seems to know how the mind suffers in the uninspiring atmosphere of the everyday office workplace. Her book is a grammatical cup of fresh Starbucks coffee -- sharp, to the point, and oh-sooooo-needed!

5 out of 5 stars A practical and effective primer that is fun to read!.......1999-03-15

If only Ms. Burckmyer had written this gem 20 years ago! I am a recently retired business executive who had to resort to my own improvised methods of teaching the rules of English construction and effective writing to a generation of bright young managers whose good ideas were masked far too often by disorganized and poorly executed written work.

Why Does My Boss Hate My Writing? is a handy little book that can be readily absorbed --and actually enjoyed-- by even the most reluctant or defensive of those in need of remedial instruction. It tackles and teaches the basics of good writing in easy-to-read chapters that illustrate, often with engaging humor, the practical consequences of inattention to the rules of effective writing.

Ms. Burckmyer accomplishes much more than providing the reader with an enumeration of the basic lessons of grammar and syntax, she addresses the subtleties of tone and style that soothe the concerns of disgruntled customers, win negotiations with business adversaries, and convince the skeptics within our organizations of the wisdom of our thinking.

I highly recommend this succinct and well written primer. It should be required reading for every management trainee, newly minted M.B.A., and the legions of junior consultants, lawyers, and accountants who aspire to be business advisors. I also recommend this book for the seasoned executive; it contains some helpful reminders that may refrest your own writing style and make you a more effective critic of your company's communications.

                                                  Book Description

The nine essays collected here examine ethnic relations, discrimination, and affirmative action in different regions of the world. The contributors focus throughout on the political economy of ethnic relations - an area that has until now been largely neglected in the literature. Written by economists, the papers both offer theoretical and empirical insights into standard neoclassical models of discrimination and explore in depth the historical and institutional features of the specific cases under study. Six of the papers address discrimination and affirmative action in developing countries; the remaining essays examine the problem as it has been manifested in socialist states. The aim throughout is to offer the reader an enhanced understanding of the economic and political genesis of the often catastrophic problems associated with ethnic discrimination. Following a general introduction by the editor, the contributors examine relations between Arabs and Jews in the Israeli labor force; the complex interactions between human rights, affirmative action, and land reform in Latin America; and ethnic relations and the new economic policy in Malaysia. The three additional studies of ethnic problems in developing countries look at apartheid in South Africa, political and economic discrimination in Sri Lanka, and ethnic conflict in the Sudan. Turning to an examination of ethnic discrimination under communism, the contributors analyze the problems faced by gypsies in Eastern Europe, the politics of ethnicity and affirmative action in the Soviet Union, and labor market discrimination and ethnic tension in Yugoslavia. A bibliography is included for those wishing to pursue further research on the subject. By focusing attention on discrimination in regions of the world little studied in past works on ethnic conflict, these essays represent a unique and important contribution to the literature of international economics and political economy.
