Better ways to spend your money.......2007-07-15
COLOR HARMONY WORKBOOK is one of the most disappointing purchases in recent history. You would be better off with a five-dollar Colorwheel or using the Live Color feature in Adobe Illustrator CS3.
Separated into ambiguously named sections like "Romantic," "Earthy" and "Welcoming," this book depicts photographs of interior design and/or paintings. It then samples the colors and presents them in monochromatic, tertiary, complementary, analogous, and split complementary pallets. Most of the suggested combinations are very vibrant or Avant Garde. On page 32 there is a photo of a room with bright orange walls, light beige cushions surrounded by tan wicker and dark green accents. When you get past the monochromatic colors as depicted on page 25, some unrealistic combinations emerge.
Perforated color combinations appear on each page -- allowing you to go hunting through some of the most awful non-returnable paint available. To be fair, not all combinations are bad. Just consider, you can pick up swatch books with interior photographs for free from you local paint store.

This book begins with a presentation of 96 colors in a color wheel and then explores color combinations based on these 96 colors, plus grey which is added at the end.
The colors are divided in 22 groupings, according to the effect the colors would have: powerful, rich, romantic, vital, earthy, friendly, soft, welcoming, moving, elegant, fresh, traditional, refreshing, tropical, classic, dependable, calm, regal, magical, energetic, subdued, and professional.
Each grouping is represented with a particular color, containing a brief description of that color and its effect, and followed by color combinations which are sorted into monochromatic, primary, complimentary, analogous, split complimentary, split, clash, and neutral. These color combinationas are provided in two formats - one that would remain in the book and another one consisting out of swatches, which can be taken out of the book.
At the end of the book are given CMYK values of 96 colors, plus 10 consisting of white, black and the nuances of grey.
All in all, the book is very well organized.

As a web designer, I have found this book to be invaluable. I am on my 3rd copy of this book (my other copies met with a strange demise). Each time I need to buy a new Color Harmony book I search for others but come back to this one. It is a great primer for color combinations and how they can create different moods. It also has hundreds of different examples of combinations and does a decent job of explaining color theory. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to use color with the confidence that comes from understanding how colors work to convey a mood/message.
Amazing tool!.......2006-08-08
I saw this book at a friend's house and instantly fell inlove with it. As an upcoming Graphic Designer this book just opened my eyes to a bunch of new ways to use color in my designs and especially in the enviorment that they usually have to be presented in; this enhances the impact your design might have on the customer and still be totally correct for the theme you're looking for.
This is also a great way for artists to give a better atmosphere to their pictures or to simply expand their personal palette when they work on a piece.
Overall I think this book is a must have for artists and designers alike because it teaches you to work with color like the powerful tool that it is.

This is a great book for figuring out which colors go best with each other, however it's not really a "workbook" per se. Although I was a little disapponted about that, I'll still give this book 5 stars because the color combinations are spectacular.

I purchased this particular book to learn techniques...not how to catagorize my pictures under certain headings. Which is what this book is about;Mr.Hedgecoe's pictures are B U Tful but I wanted to know how he got there!He had the right headings but no content. I expected techniques and numbers not "you should do this, and not that".It was like he didn't want to give his secrets away.It has nice pics but definitley not a reference book.I hope I'm not 2 hard on him.

Covers all aspects of black and white photography. Great for who doesn't know anything about B&W photography. Darkroom techniques are made simple and easy. Powerful shots. Undoubtedly one of the best general B&W book.

Scott Myers has out done himself. Cartoons such as "Rodeo Dog" and "Look Ma, no thumbs!" will have you laughing until your side hurts. No matter what the situation, these dogs will find some way to get into trouble.

exellent catalogue of vienna exhibit.......1999-11-04
The exhibit in Vienna was small but sensational (not in the "Sensation" sense). The curators really did a great job finding these works representative of 19th century painting. There are works by Church, Hassam, Sargent and more. The exhibit though small was quite overwhelming. It helps to have a catalogue that has scholarly readable articles that accompany the paintings.

Excellent Music Compositions.......2001-02-01
Presented in an innovative format of book, music, and interactive CD-ROM, Arctic Odyssey was inspired by the journey photographer Richard Olsenius made through the Northwest Passage, a waterway that's still treacherous, mysterious, and alluring to adventurers. It all works very well to capture an authentic feeling for the majesty of the Arctic. The main attraction here is the music, which is beautifully done with a far greater range of melody than I've come to expect from New Age music. Indeed, thankfully it bears no resemblance to that idiotic, monotonous, whiny New Age stuff that makes me psychotic to the point where all I can think about is strangling somebody. The music here is mostly piano-based, and the whole package is well worth seeing and hearing.

This is a compelling read for anyone concerned about making democracy work to the benefit of their entire community. First a Dream tells the heartwarming and instructive story of how the people of Belevedere and Tiburon in Calfornia's Marin County dared to believe that they could build cooperatively a grass-roots community library that reflects and serves their diverse population in extraordinary ways. It is heartwarming to read how their community library, serving two quite different towns, engages and invigorates a remarkable number of their citizens in reading, the arts, and community improvement projects. It is instructive to see what it takes to build such a learning community into the roots of a society: a vision, extraordinary commitment and perserverence, flexibility, imagination and time.
This is one of the better guides I have seen on how constructively to involve an entire community in building its own living democracy. There are exciting and useful lessons here for anyone who is ready to engage in strengthening their neighborhood, town or society.
A True Study in Community.......2002-06-08
It is my good fortune to be the Director of the Belvedere-Tiburon Library, an independent community library created by the citizens of two adjoining municipalities in southern Marin County, California chronicled in "First a Dream". I am very proud of "First a Dream: A Community Builds a Library" and grateful to the people who made it possible. It is the inspirational and instructive story of the development of the library which opened its doors in April, 1997. It is also a study in community-building, local values, public spirit, and long-term commitment. The residents of the communities came together in thought, experience, and action to fill a need they both shared and worked together to finance, build and operate a new library. To achieve this, more than ten years of volunteer time and effort were given by hundreds of people.
The library is a partnership of the two municipalities and reflective and representative of both. It is a community gateway and cultural center, a place of shared responsibilities and benefits. Today there are more than two hundred residents serving on twenty+ committees and each is vested in maintaining the excellence of this library. In creating their own library, the citizens of Tiburon and Belvedere demonstrated something basic and good about people and communities, about social democracy and its power and glory. It shows that local community activists can take matters into their own hands and achieve something remarkable.
Congratulations and thanks to author Jo Ann Ridley for telling this story with such attention to detail, warmth, and enthusiasm. Thanks to artist and architect James Mallott for his beautiful illustrations and his remarkable generosity. Thanks to Dr. Kevin Starr, California State Librarian, for his eloquent foreword. The books takes you to a far away place,it could be a Venitian palace or a Turkish house of worship. The colors and design makes you wish you were a guest at this hidden get away. The short stories that acompany the photos give life to the msyterious surroundings. The book is a colelctions of most peoples fantisy getaways.

Lives Up to the Title.......2003-10-01
This is a well-researched book that adds to our understanding of the continuities of popular culture. A wide variety of popular culture contexts are discussed. David Crouch, for example, looks at how cultural meanings are represented in landscape while Sherrie A. Inness views the ideology of girls in girls' scouting novels.
Morris B. Holbrook's essay on the new nostalgia is a particularly interesting chapter. He talks about discovering the joys of popular music as he was entering adolescence and how it shaped his perception. Within that context he discovered the force of nostalgia. Like others in society, he learned that his buying patterns were influenced by popular entertainment. He notes, "In general, these echoes of the past form part of the cultural fabric of contemporary society. In particular, they exert an irresistible effect on consumer behavior. Indeed, their role in the consumption experience serves as the main theme of the present essay" (p. 83).
He goes on to discuss the implications for baby boomers. The issue of the collection cycle is discussed. One's motivation for acquiring is also addressed.
Nostalgia, as expressed through various media forms is his next topic. He talks about magazines, television reruns, classic films, and old music. He goes on to categorize the genre according to decades.
Three orders of nostalgia are listed: third order or interpreted nostalgia, second order or reflexive nostalgia, and first order or simple nostalgia.
This book is helpful in connecting the past with the present, with implications for the future in popular culture.

This volume brings together an international group of contributors to explore the impacts of structural economic change and technological progress on labor markets. The contributors goal is to present an in-depth comparative study of the ways in which different national economies have adjusted to structural changes like the shift to service-based economies and technological changes brought about by the increasing use of the computer in offices and on the production line. Examining the adjustment process from both a micro and macro perspective, the contributors analyze the flexibility potentials within the different institutional organizations of the labor market in the U.S., France, West Germany, Great Britain, and Sweden. The study begins with a comprehensive introduction written by the editors which discusses the problem of structural and technological change in economic, social, and political terms. Two subsequent chapters address the economic structures of post-industrial society and the differential characteristics of employment growth in service industries. The contributors then present individual analyses of the labor market situation in the five countries under study as well as two general studies of institutions regulating the labor market and flexibility within the labor market. Throughout, the contributors are concerned with key issues such as which systems seem to adapt best, how skill and educational needs may be met in the changing labor market, and the importance of flexibility in a system characterized by ongoing structural and technological change.
