Customer Reviews:
lovely book.......2007-01-16
Wonderful Degas photos illustrate ballet beautifully, I wanted one of them for myself.
Excellent series.......2006-06-22
My daughter has enjoyed all of the books in this series since she was about a year old. They were the first baby board books we sought out by author after seeing how much she enjoyed the Matisse one. This one is her favorite lately; she loves to dance around the kitchen when we read it.
Excellent first art book.......2006-04-21
Fun story about dancing, illustrated by Degas classics. My near 3 yo daughter loves dance related stories and she simply adored this book on the first read, "pretty pictures daddy". A great way to introduce art to your child, I look forward to the other books.
Beautiful art book for kids.......2006-02-07
I have four of Julie Merberg's books and this one isn't a disappointment. Her books are fabulous introductions to art for little ones. The pictures in this book are beautiful Degas paintings. My daughter loves looking at the dancers and listening to the flowing text that goes with the pictures. All of Merberg's books are worth the price if you want to begin introducing art to your little one.
Great intro to art.......2005-08-24
Our 7 month old daughter loves the books in this series and gets very excited when we get ready to read them to her. I can only recommend these to anyone that wants to introduce their kids to art in a fun and exciting way. The poems that accompany each picture are fun and relate to each painting, which also helps expand their vocabulary.
Customer Reviews:
Have your heroes always been cowboys?.......2003-08-14
I admit to a terrible weakness for good, highly detailed line drawings; I know real people and animals don't have ink outlines, but there's nothing like a great ink sketch to help you understand just how a creature, or an outfit, is put together. Jo Mora, who deserves to be far better known than he is, was a master of the medium, and nowhere does he strut his stuff better in this book, first printed in 1946, when he was 67 years old.
Mora begins with a brief, humorous sketch of the beginning of the American cattle industry--the early Spanish ranchero, the antebellum Texian frontiersman-cowhunter, and at last the first great trail drives to Kansas. He goes on to explain why the cowboy's dress and tools are as they are and how the rider does his work, complete with diagrams that show sequentially how a steer is "busted." He tells about the two chief systems of breaking a cowhorse, about the longhorn and his customs, the trail herd on the way north, the chuck wagon, the roundup, brands, rustling, and that indispensable item, the horse. He illustrates it all with fine detailed pictures that should help anyone, even if they've never seen a real cowboy in their lives, imagine how one should have looked. His friendly, casual voice, like that of Will James or Ramon Adams, is that of an old-timer at the campfire genially explicating upon something he loves and knows well, without ever forgetting that he may be dealing with a pack of ignorant greenhorns. This is one of the half-score or so of books that are absolutely indispensable to an understanding of the genuine "waddie" and his work. It begs to be brought back into print.

Book Description
An amusing and affectionate attempt to present some of the unique characteristics of the country church. The book's intent is to be a mirror in which rural church folks will celebrate themselves, as well as a window through which city church people can come to appreciate their country cousins.

Birk has done it again!.......1999-03-27
Move over, Jeff Foxworthy or take a seat in the pew. Ron Birk has jumped on that wagon and softened the humor just enough to make a perfect stocking stuffer for everyone in the family. Birk's humorous thoughts are proven successful many times over before he puts them down in books. A professional speaker, Birk presents after dinner and keynote speeches for groups across the country and receives accolades everywhere he goes for his Texas hill country brand of wit and wisdom. Between these dinners, and his monthly column in the Southwestern Texas Synod Lutheran Church newspaper, he has a good audience on which to test his material. As an athletic director said, "Where else can you find a minister who is also a goat rancher, a TV performer and an after dinner speaker? What a combination." Book Description
Have you ever wondered to what extent investor confidence and expectations impact stock market prices? In Behavioral Trading, stock market contrarian, Woody Dorsey, gives readers for the first time insight into his highly profitable proprietary market diagnosis techniques. These are often described as market expectations theory, behavioral finance and most commonly contrary opinion analysis. Dorsey's work is followed by major investors and the financial media seeks his macroeconomic perspective that is more than six months ahead of the crowd. For the first time, Woody Dorsey shows how his technique makes behavioral economics practical, accessible and understandable. He has developed his unique insights from his research of financial market probabilities during the past twenty years. Market Semiotics, both the name of Dorsey's company and his technique, is a research philosophy based on the logic of behavioral finance. In an illuminating and amusing fashion, this book offers an original and disciplined perspective that delivers precise forecasts of the market.

Market Insights without hesitation.......2007-06-02
I've been following Dorsey's ongoing work since 2003 when this book was released. It is essential to traders and investors alike, in order to capture the profits available from Market events. Also Dorsey avoids the risks inherent in events when faced with a beligerent Market. Dorsey's Book is the best work on Market Phenomenology since Reminiscences of a Stock Operator.
11/10
This Book is The White Truffle of Finance.......2006-09-03
Subtle, yet powerful flavors. Not for everyone. You really have to take the time to read it. I found myself coming back to it because it contains the principles behind successful investing. It's a groundbreaking work that may not be recognized for some time. It has rare or medium-rare, as you like it, insights into the market. Why read all the ordinary market books which all say the same thing. This is new ground.
One good concept and a lot of BLA BLA.......2005-10-02
Reader be advised that the author owns a consulting firm that applies Woody's proprietary model in making market forecasts and, needless to say, he's not giving out anything ...
Interestingly enough, the author criticizes the use of quantitative models, but later attempts to measure the "mood" of the market to use it in a quantitative model ... ? One more comment: the average reader of business publications expects to find some logic in the style; this is not fiction, and using a "keep the reader guessing what the author REALLY means" is no business reading.
Did you take English 101 like the rest of us?
This book is overpriced........2004-07-30
This book is a tool for the author to market his service. I cannot get much insight nor technique out of this book. John Mauldin's Bull's Eye Investing is selling for $17 and it's packed with all the information you need about investing. For trading, I would turn to the all time classic: Reminiscences of a Stock Operator. Human behavior hasn't changed much in the past century.
A Useful Investment Tool.......2004-06-13
This book gives you an inside view of one company's philosophy on using market psychology to make money in the market. Dorsey examines various approaches people use toward this end, before describing his own.
He begins by showing us how the market is not rational. Never has been, never will be. I personally experienced this during the dotcom stock bubble. I had shares of stocks that, per rational theory, should have done remarkably well. I did not own shares of Yahoo--which, per rational theory, was a total dog. My stocks stayed flat, while Yahoo soared. So much for rational theory. If you get nothing else from this book, the explanation of that lesson alone makes it worth reading.
Next, Dorsey delves into the three general concepts of psychological trading. All of these seem good on the surface, but results are inconsistent. Maritimers long ago learned how to navigate by triangulation. Dorsey navigates the stock market the same way, with his "triunity" approach. He shows how looking at the intersections of the three general concepts produces consistent results.
You may have read books espousing some "can't miss" philosophy or another. Don't worry--Dorsey lets the reader know his triunity approach still requires judgment. For example, if the indicators are in a certain area, that would be an indication that the market is about to hit a peak.
Dorsey explains that his method might miss the peak. And, it might miss a trough. But if you are not greedy, his method would appear to be a useful tool for profitable investing. Remember, pigs eat well but hogs get slaughtered.

Book Description
This book offers a history of Japanese television audiences and the popular media culture that television helped to spawn. In a comparatively short period, the television industry helped to reconstruct not only postwar Japanese popular culture, but also the Japanese social and political landscape. During the early years of television, Japanese of all backgrounds, from politicians to mothers, debated the effects on society. The public discourse surrounding the growth of television revealed its role in forming the identity of postwar Japanese during the era of high-speed growth (1955 - 1973) that saw Japan transformed into an economic power and one of the world's top exporters of television programming.

Book Description
Examining the premise that the process of economic liberalization has had a significant impact on the labor markets of many countries, this contributed volume studies that impact in different countries and regions from both theoretical and applied perspectives. While recognizing that liberalization entails many elements, the book focuses on how structural adjustment policies have contributed to the overall development effort. The first four chapters analyze the relationship between economic liberalization and labor markets, and then investigate this relationship within broader regions, such as North-South, transition economies, and Africa. The remaining chapters provide case studies of Greece, Chile, Argentina, Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago, and Turkey. All the country chapters treat political economy issues and related policy conclusions. Stressing the interrelationship between liberalization and labor markets, the chapters discuss the importance of institutional, political, and legal factors in considering the effects of liberalization policies on the structure of labor markets and its participants. The book is an important look at a previously unexplored area of economic analysis.

Description:
We investigate India's widening skill wage gap and narrowing gender wage differential during the two decades that coincide with the economic liberalization in the country. Using the nonparametric methodology developed by Katz and Murphy [Katz, L. F., & Murphy, K. M. (1992). Changes in relative wages, 1963-87: supply and demand factors. Quarterly Journal of Economics, 107(1), 35-78], we find that relative demand shifts contributed to relative wage shifts and that increases in the demand for skilled labor were mostly due to skill upgrading within industries. In assessing the contribution of external sector reforms to demand for skilled labor, we find that international trade-in manufactures benefited skilled men but hurt skilled women, whereas outsourcing of services generated a demand for both female and male college graduates.

Description:
The question of how trade liberalization affects the employment of children in developing economies is at the core of the debate on globalization. Trade theory predicts that an increase in the price of an exported good could either increase or decrease child labor depending on the magnitudes of the substitution and income effects. In this paper, we study the relationship between changes in the relative price of an exported commodity and child labor using household-level data from within a poor country. In particular, we relate child labor to regional and intertemporal variation in the real price of rice surrounding national and international rice market integration in Vietnam. We find that higher rice prices are associated with declines in child labor. Income effects play an important role in this relationship. Rice price increases are associated with the largest declines in child labor in households that are large net producers of rice. These findings show that greater market integration can be associated with less child labor. Moreover, our results suggest that the use of punitive trade sanctions on exports from developing countries to eradicate child labor is unlikely to yield the desired outcome.

Description:
We consider the relationship between relative price changes and the allocation of labor between households and the formal wage labor market in the context of Vietnam's liberalization of its rice trade in the 1990s. Many individuals in poor economies work within their own household rather than in formal labor markets. We find that larger rice price increases in a community are associated with declines in hours adults devote to work within the household and increases in time spent in the wage labor market. We also observe increased specialization in household economic activities accompanying these shifts in hours towards wage work. Our results are consistent with the idea that a growth in the extent of the market shifts production and labor from households to markets during development, thereby inducing gains from specialization. Thus, the reallocation of labor between households and markets in response to a trade liberalization might be an important component in understanding the link between trade and growth in very poor economies, currently the focus of the Doha WTO negotiation round.
