5 out of 5 stars Tudy Sammartini.......2001-12-05

I have both of Tudy's books; she also wrote The Secret Gardens of
Venice. In October, I had the honor of meeting Tudy (what a colorful and dramatic character!) in Venice and accompanying her on a private garden tour of this magical city. She truly knows the aesthetic history of Venice and it shows in her books.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous!.......2001-01-11

This is a terrific buy. If you never wanted to go to Venice before - you will now! The photographs are outstanding and the text not too boring. An invaluable reference for artists. Thank heaven someone thought to study these ancient floors before they are lost! Supposedly "there is nothing new under the sun", well, I would consider having one of these designs in a new home, if I could find anyone with the patience to complete one!

4 out of 5 stars I like this book.......2006-06-06

This book was published in the United Kingdom. It's the same book as Barbara's 14 Formulas for Painting Fabulous Landscapes only with a different title and cover. Be sure to check out that title for more reviews and information on the material covered.

5 out of 5 stars Worth The Money.......2005-08-10

I purchased this art book like I have so many others - turned out that it was worth every cent I paid for it. Nice to get a book that provides the information promised rather than being just an advertizement for the artists work and no substance. I liked the book so much that I bought every book listed in her Bibliography and every single one turned out to be just as good -I read every one cover to cover and have even written Barbara to see if she can recommend any other books - nice to see there are still people with ethics that believe in giving the customer what they paid for - and in turn receive wonderful book reviews like this and the pride of knowing that they are benefiting every one who reads it.

This book has excellent examples and instructions for writing resumes, news releases, memos, bad and good news letters, and more. I picked it up as a text for my journalism class, but I will definitely be keeping it for future reference.

                            Book Description

The U.S.-Mexico and U.S.-Canada borders are the two busiest land crossings in the world. Canada and the United States are each other's largest trading partners and Mexico is America's second largest trading partner with trade between the two nations more than tripling since the start of NAFTA. The many immediate ripple effects of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon included a dramatic tightening of North American border controls and a hardening of the policy discourse about cross-border flows. This is the first book that explores the implications of September 11th and the new war on terrorism for border controls, cross-border relations, and economic integration in North America. The volume makes a unique contribution to important scholarly and policy discussions over the meaning and management of borders in an increasingly borderless (regional and global) economy, and adds fuel to broader debates over the changing nature of borders and territorial politics in a radically transformed security environment.

                              Description:
Alexander Del Mar's prescient and profound contributions to monetary economics have been basically disregarded for the duration of a century. This paper sets out Del Mar's contributions to monetary economics and economic statistics and demonstrates the striking relevance of his contributions to modern monetary thought. The contemporary arbiters and judges of intellectual merit were aware of Del Mar's writings but Del Mar was excluded from contemporary reference and recognition. His exclusion had led to his having been denied his rightful place in the history of economic thought. One explanation for the silencing of Del Mar is that his intellectual position placed him in opposition to the views of the leaders of the profession. Del Mar was also forthright in his criticisms of his contemporaries' views and was open in his writings in commenting on prior anti-Semitism. We present evidence suggesting that prejudice and bigotry in high places in academia were involved in Del Mar's exclusion from the consolidating profession of academic economists in the late 19th century.

                                Book Description

This work examines immigrantism in the US, the UK and France within the context of globalisation and questions our understanding of the 'state'. Doty uses the concept of desire as a way to understand the forces at work in the social, political and economic life, to explore the impulses which move society towards various practices and policies, and finally to understand statecraft.

                                  Book Description

Rapid economic changes throughout the world economy offer new possibilities for economic development. Yet the multitude of people in an impoverished underclass often find the burst of economic development in their country continues to exclude them. As technologies and demographics reshape economies, the underclass finds its skills increasingly peripheral to the urban economy into which it is drawn. The daunting task before Mexico in raising the living standards of its people is carefully analyzed with the help of economic theory. The current focus on Mexico and Latin America since the passage of NAFTA makes this a particularly relevant book for economists and readers interested in labor, international topics, and in Mexico.

                                    Description:
One of the great puzzles in science concerns the rise of early modern humans and the fall of Neanderthals. A number of theories exist, and many support the biological principle of competitive exclusion. But the evidence for such mechanistic theories in which biology is destiny is limited. In response, this paper develops a behavioral model of Neanderthal extinction. We show how the endogenous division of labor and subsequent trading among early modern humans could have helped them to overcome potential biological deficiencies. We discuss the relation between economics and natural selection, and show how trade may partially offset natural selection.

                                        Description:
Does the mainstream of economic thinking and analysis tend systematically to exclude ideas and approaches that could enrich the field, and, as a consequence, have important questions and issues been shunted aside for nonobjective reasons? Two recent volumes by heterodox economists that address these questions are Geoffrey Hodgson's How Economics Forgot History: The Problem of Historical Specificity in Social Science, and Steve Keen's Debunking Economics: The Naked Emperor of the Social Sciences. I evaluate their claims of academic exclusion and assess the current state of (selective) pluralism within mainstream economics.

                                          Book Description

`This is the best book I have yet seen on the social and political implications of financial market liberalisation and regulatory change in a globalizing world. The authors systematically analyse the relationships between powerful private sector actors, policymakers and regulators, and other interested groups, identifying crucial neopluralist coalition-building processes leading to complex pro-market forms of reregulation. Each chapter examines these processes at several levels: competing actors and institutions in the financial sector itself; wider political processes and power relationships; and distributive outcomes - or who wins and who loses in the multi-level playing field of 21st century global finance.' - Philip G. Cerny, Rutgers University, Newark, US and University of Manchester, UK

This book focuses on recent financial market reforms, and their implications for social, economic and political exclusion. In particular it considers the hitherto under-researched question of whose interests govern the design of regulatory mechanisms and who influences the decision-making process. This process is set out as contested terrain, in which there are winners and losers, and in which there are inevitably circles of exclusion. The authors, comprising financial authority experts and academic specialists, expand the concept of exclusion beyond its typical social dimension to incorporate all actors, be they individuals or institutions not permitted to contribute to financial market regulation as a public good. As they point out, this may take the form of political, economic or indeed cultural exclusion. The book examines the conflicts that arise between various interests and how these are managed within the process of regulation.

The book has a focus on political financial sector reforms at the global level with special emphasis on how these reforms are implemented in the EU. The authors conclude that financial governance has to be embedded in broad legitimization structures, encompassing the participation or representation of a variety of interests affected by it, if they are to be deemed democratically legitimate. Furthermore, inclusion also has to show substantive effects on governance outcomes.

This volume opens up the debate about the future of financial market regulation and hence, policy makers, NGOs, researchers and scholars will find this interdisciplinary book of great interest. It will also appeal to political scientists, economists, financial market participants, regulators and economic policy makers in general and academics of sociology, political science, economics and finance in particular.
