"Every line should have an opinon".......2007-01-31
I simply can not put into words, what this book can do for a struggling artist. This and "The Animators Survival Guide", Scott McCloud's Trilogy on comics, and a good book on anatomy, are the only books you'll ever need on drawing. The offer wisdom and guidance that no "How to draw" book ever will. These guys all have been in the artistic trenches, experienced it all, and impart to the new generation wanting to do this stuff, how to do it. I'm not even an animator, more a comic artist who doesn't draw comics, but every time I hit a block or wall, these books give me the inspiration to push beyond "Great". They give me the much needed kick in the rearend, leading from "I draw" to "I am an artist".
All you'll ever need are these books, and I would suggest that ANY artist buy this book, and the others mentioned right this minute. The Preface to this book is enough to break down many walls a beginner or intermediate artist might be behind, and when they come crashing down?
You'll draw like you never thought you could ever have.
Awesome book.......2007-01-15
This was a gift for my niece who is an artist and she absolutely loved it.
She said she couldn't wait to use the book and that it gave her so many ideas. Highly recommended.
Great Drawing book! .......2006-03-22
He shares his great knowledge how to observe figure...
Great teacher, and great art work, great person.
If you have chance to take his drawing classes, take his classes.
Two thumbs up!!.......2005-07-19
A very useful book to give more life and energy to your illustrations and animation drawings!
Brings Art to Life and Life to Art.......2005-07-18
The focus here is primarily on the use of assymetry through straight and curved lines to show the direction of force in the body. This is covered in other books, but not this extent. Other methods treat this material as secondary to contour and gesture, here it is the focus of a drawing. The book is filled with excellent ,forceful examples of using rhythm, shape, and line to bring out the life in a subject.
There is one weakness here. The author does cover many things beginners need to know, but goes over them very quickly. While a beginner could learn from this book, perhaps a little experience with the basics would be helpful before coming to this book.
The author is an animator and besides appealing to other animators, his clean style would appeal to those interested in sketching or reportage, a subject which the author devotes a whole chapter to.

Buy the Water color School instead.......2006-03-04
The title of this book is misleading it says its equal to 1 year of water color lessons. The book is divided in "days" of lessons but all that it does is explain water color techniques wich take about half a page then proceeds to show you examples of his students and explains each and every one of them in incredibly boring and painful detail. I already read about half of the bookand find it lacking as a learning guide. This book is only good as a compendium of Watercolor techniques and methods, if you skip all worthless reviews wich are about 3/4 parts of this book that is...
A great idea, but not executed very well..........2003-01-31
The book is based on art courses the author taught. Unfortunately, I don't think the author is a very good painter, so it is hard to take the lessons very seriously.
The book has some worth, teaching you how to see shape, then shades, composition, and then executing paintings. It builds one lesson on another. But the bottom line is the paintings aren't anywhere near as good as Jan Kunz, or other well-known artists. So it is hard to take the author's advice.
I am sorry I bought the book, and will probably sell it to someone else. But if you like the author's paintings, you will enjoy this book.
What would I reccomend instead? 'Watercolor School' by Hazel Harrison, or "Painting Beautiful Watercolor from Photographs" by Jan Kunz.
the only books you'll ever need for watercolours.......2003-01-10
As an addict of how-to art books, Michael's are the ones I return to constantly. Whether you're a beginner or a regular watercolourist you'll find all his advice useful; his assignments challenging. Best of all are the examples of his students' responses to the assignments, with Michael's appraisals and comments. So supportive always - he just makes you want to try it for yourself. Let's hope Michael Crespo's out-of-print books get to be republished; I'd love to see the one on oils...
The Best Art Class I Ever Had.......2002-11-16
Woody Allen said that "Ninety percent of success in life is just showing up." This is true for art skills too. Crespo has made this easy in this book. He helps us to realize that our efforts are art and that art should be fun.
For example, Crespo's Day 1 of the second semester is an exercise encouraging artists to "begin again." He stated, "Remember: relax, love what you're doing, and don't take yourself too seriously. Let your critics do that" (p. 138).
I am starting through this book for the second or third time. I don't know if I will ever be a famous artist, but now I know that I am an artist. Crespo's exercises help me find work to do and help me to focus on principles. Every exercise yields one or several paintings that I can display. Right now I am doing a series of 3 paintings. One in normal value, one in high key and one in low key. I am having a lot of fun.
The exercises have really helped me improve over the years. Anyone can learn something from this book. But the best thing is that you can feel good about what you are doing. You always have plenty of critics; Crespo is someone who encourages you to suspend criticism and to enjoy creativity and growth.
Exceptional Book on How to Watercolor.......2002-07-12
This is an exceptional book of graded lessons on how to watercolor. It is completely different from any other "how to" book on watercolors that I've seen, (which to me are mostly "show off" books). Crespo is genuinely dedicated to teaching students - while teaching technical skills, there is a wonderful sense of humanity, love for teaching, and awe of the mysterious essence of nature which shines through. Instead of having illustrations which show only master watercolors, (as many books do - a good way to discourage the beginning watercolorist right off the bat), most of the examples Crespo gives are of his own students' work, and only a few of his own. He points out what is wonderful about the students' work, (which is such a refreshing change from critiquing student work and pointing out in graphic and gorey detail what is wrong with it!) The lessons are carefully graded, building on what has already been learned. The assignments are stimulating and fun, with just enough challenge to not feel overwhelming.
I can't say enough good things about this book. As in all the best teaching, what shines forth in Crespo's is not only his knowledge of technique, but his love for the medium, his students, and life.
Book Description
Structured and practical in approach, David Bellamy's guide has amateur painters painting pictures right from the start. The well-known teacher-artist helps students to learn techniques by producing actual sketches, studies and watercolour paintings in this inspiring and practical guide. The book is divided into three main parts. The first section covers all the practical aspects of watercolour painting; the second section is more challenging, requiring students to take a little more initiative and develop their own style; and the third shows how to paint the many different elements of the landscape. The course includes numerous practical exercises which highlight the key points covered in each chapter and there are 12 demonstration pictures with clear, step-by-step instructions.

Beautiful step-by-step illustrations that REALLY take you step by step and are clear. I think you'll get the most out of this if you're not an absolute beginner, but I'd recommend it for anyone's collection of watercolor instruction books.

The Cambridge Companion to Bartók (Cambridge Companions to Music)
ASIN: 080326108X |
Book Description
The world knows Béla Bartók as a composer. The essays contained in this voluminous compilation disclose a side of the great Hungarian previously known to relatively few persons: Bartók the man of letters. Theorist, performer, collector, scholar, and composer, Béla Bartók is internationally renowned as one of the most important and influential musicians of the twentieth century. Throughout his life he wrote lectures and essays that dealt with virtually every aspect of European music. These essays, previously scattered in specialized journals, deal with the wide range of interests and expertise: folk music and musical folklore, the music of his contemporaries and great predecessors, a brief autobiography, the structure and performance of his own music, the sale of sound recordings, and music education.

Batok is the man!.......2001-06-16
I am a music composer and I have found the essays by Bartok compiled in this book very interesting and helpful. For example, there are several essays describing how Bartok organized many of his compositions. There are also several essays describing different types of folk music such as American, Rumanian, and Hungarian. There is an essay on the 'So-called Bulgarian Rhythm.' I definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in learing about different types of folk music or anything about Bela Bartok and is compositions.

Book Description
The pride and passion of simply following England has a habit of turning into something nasty. Is it down to laddish excess, or is this the legacy of hundreds of years spent invading other lands for king and country? This book finds some surprising answers to these questions that have troubled the football authorities, police, and politicians for more than a decade. Along the way it discovers that it is not all bad news either. Football tells more than a few home truths about England. Anger and joy, boisterous celebration and street confrontations, the prize of victory and the despair of yet another penalty shoot-out—these are the moments that no England fan will ever forget. The book explores what those moments say about the English as a nation, with contributions from John Peel, Billy Bragg, Dominik Diamond, Pete Davies, and John Williams. Music and nostalgia, tabloid excesses and public-order policing, the fate of the English male and the misery of losing out to our bitterest rivals one more time are detailed as part of a bigger picture beyond the touchline.
