Whether it's a weekend home, a shady retreat out in the garden, or just the memory of a summer spent at the beach, many of us associate a specific place with a feeling of getting away from it all. It's a place one goes to feel removed from the stresses of modern life and leaves feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Of course, your idea of a getaway depends on your definition of relaxation, and Chris Casson Madden's Getaways serves up a variety of exemplary, sometimes lavish, retreats, such as a 58-foot boat; a family farm with a menagerie of horses, ducks, geese, and goats; and a compound in the Hudson River Valley with its own natural waterfall. Several celebrity getaways are featured as well, including Michael Keaton's cabin on his Montana dude ranch, a boathouse on the Hudson River that serves as Toni Morrison's creative inspiration, and Katie Couric's country home.

Not all of Casson's getaways are the typical weekend or summer homes. Some are year-round retreats or even special rooms within a home. Donna Kaplan's re-created 19th-century French bathroom, with its antique glass perfume bottles, tapered candles, and fireplace, leaves her well rested after a long soak in the cast-iron tub. Lynn von Kersting and Richard Irving's Sunset Boulevard home has a pool and a porch filled with bohemian furnishings, cozy paper lanterns and candles, and lush tropical flowers and plants--a perfect spot for entertaining friends. Bob Levenson's garden getaway is a backyard arbor consisting of four intertwined gingko trees layered with clematis and climbing roses.

These imaginatively decorated and diverse retreats should inspire those with beach houses, cabins, and the like to consider how the elements of a "getaway" can be incorporated into their second home. And those currently without a getaway may be motivated to simply set aside a room or space outdoors that can serve as a sanctuary from busy otherworlds. --Kris Law

Book Description

A haven, a retreat, a special place that offers a sense of sanctuary--this is a getaway. And as Chris Casson Madden discovers in her beautiful new book, a getaway can be found in myriad forms and in varied locations. Whether it's a log cabin in the mountains, an elegant villa by the sea, or even a cozy suburban house lived in year-round, a true getaway encourages family gatherings and personal renewal.

In Getaways: Carefree Retreats for All Seasons, Chris celebrates the easygoing spirit that creates such havens. She uncovers a harbor hideaway on a New England island, a one-room cottage by the race tracks of Saratoga Springs, a sleek farmhouse in the Malibu hills, and a Hudson Valley treehouse built for two little girls by their father. Other delightful retreats include a fragrant garden arbor in a Long Island backyard, a fifty-year-old yacht moored off the coast of California, and Chris's own stone house in the suburbs of New York. She visits the private escapes of renowned architects, designers, and artists, as well as the weekend homes of Katie Couric, Michael Keaton, and Toni Morrison. Along the way, Chris discusses the importance of creating a getaway to our physical and spiritual well-being. She also reveals the simple design elements that can inspire a feeling of comfort and warmth in any house.

In describing her rebuilt boathouse, Toni Morrison speaks of "a vision of a place you've had in your mind and when you find yourself there, you recognize it." With more than two hundred glorious photographs, Getaways captures the essence of that vision and encourages readers to add its richness to their own homes.

I've read dozens of decorating and vacation home books and this was worth every penny...I totally enjoyed reading it!

5 out of 5 stars Ideas, Pictures, Variety of Styles!.......2004-12-20

Getaways provides 224 pages of large, gorgeous, color pictures. There are antiques, piles of books, bedcoverings, lamps, gardens, accents, and fixtures... there are a variety of styles displayed and too much to mention. Each picture creates its own feeling and it is easy to pick & choose to make your own perfect 'getaway'. We used some basic ideas for wallcoverings, flooring, curtains, and lighting to make our perfect little escape!

5 out of 5 stars A Ton Of Great Decorating And Design Ideas!.......2001-09-17

I saw this book in an expensive little shop in Gatlinburg, Tennessee last August, and later bought it cheaper over the internet. After reading several negative reviews here, and knowing the quality of this volume, I can't understand why people would not love this book. Contrary to what two reviewers state here, it is not a small volume and the photographs are extremely well done. They range from a picturesque dock out over a body of water to sunrooms, bedrooms, libraries, old desks, etc, with associated text, and most here can be done by people with any decent and modest budget.

I just wish I had this book last year when we had a house built, but it is useful now anyway. It is a treasure worthy of more than five stars.

5 out of 5 stars A TRUE GETAWAY.......2001-08-01

Ms. Madden captured the essence of getting away, and right in your own home!! I thoroughly enjoyed this book; it gave me several ideas that I could apply to my own living situation. It's fun to just step into the homes of people that we'll never meet. The photos and text were just great. Keep on writing Chris we love it!!!

This book allows one to dive into the lives of the rich and famous and see first hand the enviromment where those such as celebirites go to relax. This book is creative and one of a kind!!!

This book is very out of date. The author has been in business for a number of years and sounds like he needs to update the way he does things. Pictures are very boring and stale.

      A Desert of Broken Dreams...

In the ENDLESS SANDS myth comes alive, and darkness is a salvation from an eternally scorching sun. Against that lie the dangers of a desert land filled with religious strife and political turmoil. Cities are the only shelter against the empty desert, and water equals power.

Ree Soesbee's utterly original fictional culture of the Endless Sands draws on a combination of ancient Morocco, Middle-Eastern Persia and Antioch, and the lands of mystery outlines in the ancient tales of the Badiya people. Cities are dominated by the strong, and the weak must do whatever they can in order to survive. It is a harsh world, but if you can master it, it can be paradise.

                Book Description

It’s time to imagine a new Canada without Quebec. After forty years of the Quiet Revolution, the province has made its point clear: it is a distinct society, and its political values are incompatible with those of the rest of the country. Instead of letting the threat of separation determine the national agenda, Canada needs to recognize that Quebec will never be satisfied within the Canadian federation and stop making concessions to it. In this new edition of the national bestseller, Reed Scowen makes the calm, persuasive argument that it’s time to reaffirm who we are as Canadians and forge a stronger, more prosperous nation without Quebec.

                Book Description

The time has come to call it quits, to ask Quebec to leave Canada, and to forge a new nation without it. Time to Say Goodbye is a powerfully argued challenge to Canadians to accept that Quebec’s national aspirations can never be satisfied within the confines of Canadian Confederation, and furthermore, continued efforts to accommodate Quebec damage Canada in ways it can no longer afford.

Canada without Quebec will be a more prosperous, generous, and hospitable nation than the linguistically and politically distorted one that has emerged from the past twenty years – since the first coming-to-power in Quebec of the Parti Quebecois. Reed Scowen, an anglophone Québécker and former member of the Quebec legislature, argues that Quebec’s political identity is based on language and ethnicity. Quebec has become an authentic nation-state. The rest of Canada has no comparable political ideology and will never comfortably accommodate Quebec.

While many do not share the caustic view of Quebec Premier Bouchard – that Canada is not a country – many do worry that Canada, without Quebec, will break apart. But Scowen suggests that the breakup of Canada will be more likely the result of the continued, futile manoeuvres to satisfy Quebec’s national aspirations. Far better, he argues, to take a positive view: build a country based on the values, traditions, and procedures that the other nine provinces share.

5 out of 5 stars an excellent book, entertaining and informative.......1999-10-30

Reed Scowen (the author of this excellent book) presents a reasonable plan. I'm a Canadian citizen, I intend to remain one, and I accept his plan to let Quebec go. I now believe after having read this great work, that both Canada and Quebec will be better off after we've gone our separate ways. I suspected this already before, but now I'm sure. I also hope British Columbia joins the USA union.

3 out of 5 stars A book sure to appeal and appease hardline separatists........1999-10-26

Reed Scowen may mean well with his book, his solution is sure to put smiles on the faces of Quebec's hardline separatists while leaving other Canadians empty handed. There is no magic bullet between these pages that fairly puts an end to the unity debate. A yes vote in a referendum would offer a more viable solution. Throw in everything that separatists have been demanding and top it off with Canada being the "bad guy" and the solution you end up with plays right into the hands of Quebec's separatist premier. Mr. Bouchard, known for his martyr complex would surely play Scowen's solution over the top to win the world's sympathy and the scorning of Canada. Although well written, Scowen's book doesn't offer a viable solution to the unity issue that has continued to plague Canadians for the majority of this century.

                Product Description

For most North Americans, the practice of sending First Nations children to aboriginal boarding schools is a chapter in history that seems best forgotten. But the generations of children who were rounded up and sent to those faraway schools won't ever forget the day-to-day reality of that "chapter." Often taken without warning or time to say goodbye to their families, children as young as five had their hair cropped short and their clothes taken away. Then they were deloused, dressed in uniforms and forbidden to speak their native language or practise their traditional arts, religion or dances. No Time to Say Goodbye is a fictional account of five children sent to aboriginal boarding school, based on the recollections of a number of Tsartlip First Nations people. These unforgettable children are taken by government agents from Tsartlip Day School to live at Kuper Island Residential School. The five are isolated on the small island and life becomes regimented by the strict school routine. They experience the pain of homesickness and confusion while trying to adjust to a world completely different from their own. Their lives are no longer organized by fishing, hunting and family, but by bells, line-ups and chores. In spite of the harsh realities of the residential school, the children find adventure in escape, challenge in competition, and camaraderie with their fellow students. Sometimes sad, sometimes funny, always engrossing, No Time to Say Goodbye is a story that readers of all ages won't soon forget.

5 out of 5 stars Ben Wicks shows but the tip of the iceberg.......2007-02-06

Images of Guernica burning in their minds, recalling the Zeppelin and Gotha raids of World War One, the authorities in Britain in 1938 plotted the most massive transhumance of humanity ever conceived. To their credit, within 72 hours of Neville Chamberlain's announcement that the UK was at war with Germany, some three and a half million vulnerable non-combatants - mainly children under 13 years of age - were evacuated from the cities of Britain to "safe" rural locations.

They came from Tyneside, from Teeside, from Merseyside, and of course from Thameside. From teeming slums, from elegant Georgian townhouses, from leafy suburbs, from upper or middle-class families, or from underemployed or unemployed working class homes.

Ben Wicks chronicles this unprecedented event. Following the planning process, from as early as 1924, he narrates the steps, the fears, the analyses that led inexorably to the decision to shred whole families to pieces, to commit to the charity of strangers the care of Britain's future, Britains youth.

The history of human social development is the history of the perpetual conflict between an agrarian lifestyle, and the life of city dwellers. The evacuation of more than 3,500,000 city folks to rural communities in the Great Britain of 1939 is but one more chapter in this history. But it is a poignant chapter. Three million displaced persons is a statistic; one such is a tragedy. Mr Wicks delves beneath the statistics to expose the tragedies, but also the triumphs. From interview to interview with the displaced children, we slowly piece together a picture of a Britain slowly shrugging off the class consciousness of the `20s, gradually emerging from the prudery of Victoriana, and preparing itself to meet and overcome the ultimate challenge of Nazi Germany.

If I had to make any criticism of this book it would be its brevity. Yes, the author had to pick and choose between thousands of personal accounts. Yes, some editing was essential. But the story of over two million children ripped from the bosom of their families demands to be told. Mr Wicks has exposed the tip of the iceberg. The other ninety percent remains, still, hidden.
