A Deserved Classic But Incomplete.......2006-11-20

You'd expect a book with the title "Graphic Design Manual" to be comprehensive, covering all the fundamentals of graphic design. This book falls far, far short of being a complete guide to graphic design. To give you an idea of how short, the book has a dozen pages of text. That's it. I know graphic designers are fond of pictures but 12 pages of text out of 172 for a manual? (I'm reviewing my copy which is the 1965 edition.)

That said, this *is* a good book on design. The little text that there is is informative and the graphics nicely illustrate and extend the text. Much of content of the book has to be generated by the reader himself, as he reads the brief introductory text and then studies the examples.

Hofmann's approach is logical and hierarchical. He starts off with the basics and illustrates each with a simple series of graphics. Then over the course of a few pages the examples get progressively more complex but still depend upon and illustrate the point/s being discussed.

I highly recommend this book to someone who wants to learn or refresh their grasp of the fundamentals of design. Hofmann is a master and the graphics he has chosen for this book are compelling and informative. This book is probably beyond the novice level as it is so compressed, with very little discussion of each point but a lot of examples. A beginner will be hard pressed to follow the development of examples without some more guidance as to what he is looking at and how the more complex graphics relate to the original point. But still, you will learn a lot from this book, especially if you return to it later in your design education.

In short, despite its title this book does not cover graphic design, it covers the elements of design, things such as the dot, the line, text and illustration and the interplay between these elements. You will not find any discussion of important principles such as hierarchy, alignment, grids, layout, color (in fact all graphics are black and white). This is however a valuable book that deserves careful study and will teach you a lot about the fundamentals of design.

Bible of graphic design???.......2003-10-18

Even though Armin Hofmann has made a grand contrubution to the design world, I surely don't consider this book as a beginners manual. The one book that I can only consider to open the beginners horizon is "A History of Graphic Design" by Philip B. Meggs. In the long run, this is a good book, but not for the freshman.

This book gives the necessary background for the study and appreciation of Italian painting and sculpture from about 1250 to 1550. It tells how the artists learned their craft, the organization of their workshops, and the guilds they belonged to; how their customers or patrons treated them and where their work was displayed-churches, civic buildings, or private homes. The book discusses how art was made-tempera, oil, panel, canvas, fresco; it surveys the characteristic types of Renaissance art-altarpieces, portraits, tombs, busts, doors fountains, medals, etc.

Excellent text, horrible pictures.......2006-04-06

Bruce Cole has a well-deserved reputation for high quality scholarship and exposition. This book is an excellent synthesis of current knowledge about the role of the artist in society, his materials, and the types of work he might create.

Sadly, the illustrations accompanying the text are worse than any I've ever seen. They're of unbelievably low quality. If you took a low-quality scanner from the mid-90's, kept it on the 'text' setting instead of 'graphics', you would still get better images than the mess that's in this text. It's more like a fourth-generation mimeograph.

They are basically unusable. And that is unacceptable in an art history text. There is no grayscale - just large blurred black blobs. It's as if a creeping fungus made a home in the book, and refused to be dislodged. The fact that this book is in print as such is an insult. With even pedestrian-quality greyscale images, this would be a fantastic text.

interesting collection of essays.......2002-05-17

Over the last 30 years there seems to be a greater interest on the part of art historians in the nuts and bolts issues of how art is created. The works of E.H. Gombrich come to mind, or "The Academy and French Painting in the Nineteenth Century", by Albert Boime. This rather disconnected set of essays by Cole examines the material issues facing the Renaissance artist.

What did paintings cost? How was the artist valued? What expectations surrounded the conception and construction of the work of art? How did the original setting differ from our encounter with these works today? These are some of the questions addressed here. This is not a coffee table book, and the illustrations are low quality black and white (at least in the paper back edition).

Like the other book by Cole that I have read, "Titian and Venetian Painting, 1450-1590", I wish this book was twice as long. Many of the questions touched on here are only given a brief answer, but the information that is here is fascinating. I am not an Art Historian, so I can only guess at the authors reputation (now head of the NEA). My sense is that he is one of those historians with a breadth of knowledge that is quite rare in these days of specialization, and that his viewpoint shows a high degree of originality. My only complaint (aside from the 100 or so color illustrations that could have provided more details) is that the writing style is not as graceful as some of the masters of this genre.

Good reference book.......2006-06-22

This is a good reference book. It offers basic information on business writing, and has many templates for various business situations. Would recommend it highly, especially to somebody starting a first job.

I wish I could send this one back.......2003-07-05

I purchased this ebook online and agree with the previous people who were dissappointed with it. I was pretty upset to find that the letters were not very professional at all. They indeed would be ok for a quick note but other than that i dont see any use for it. I needed help with a bid proposal and was shocked to find that the letter was a one page three paragraph letter. It was not at all professional and would definately not win me a bid. And last but not least, you couldnt even copy and paste text because the text is not text. Its scanned and therefore you cant copy and paste into a word doc. I just wasted $.. for nothing. Oh well a lesson learned.

I was extremely looking forward to recieving this book in the mail. All of the reviews stated that this book was excellent for the busines writer. I, on the other hand completely diagree. I work in a professional atmosphere and need a book that will emulate the professionalism of the company in which I am employed. The author has geared this book towards people with absolutely no writting skills what so ever. The sample letters that are supposedly consice and right to the point are so simple that a child could have written them. Going through this book I saw letter after letter that contained on average three sentences for the whole content of the example letters used. I understand that letters that get right to the point are the most effective, however I was hoping for many examples of a certain type of letter than just one for each subject. The author wrote each letter using a made up business with certain characterists and stated that one could rewrite the letter to fit the characteristics for their own busines. In order to do this, one would have to completely rewrite the whole letter. What is the point of spending money on this book to just have to write your own letter anyway?

I SENT THIS ONE BACK-.......2001-06-28

I ordered The McGraw-Hill Handbook in hopes that this was finally the book that would be approprite for the business professional. This book contains sample business letters that were so simple, a child could have written this book. The sample letters were on average three sentences long, which can be useful if you are informing someone of a schedule change or a quick thank you note. However,when you have much to cover in a letter or want to be absoultely clear on how to put a delicate subject the right way as to not offend someone, this book then becomes no longer useful. The author stated that the letters are based on real life scenarios which in fact is true. Anyone in a business atmosphere will need to write letters that thank the client for some reason or request a meeting with someone regarding business. However, the examples that she uses are targeted so precisily to the type of business that she made up that if anyone trying to use their own business in the letter, would no longer have an example to go by. This book was extremely disappointing. So dissapointing in fact that I will never buy another book from this author again.

The Handbook of More Business Letters is an inspirational source for every letter you have to write. While focusing on business, it is also a useful reference in the home library. It covers everything from complaint letters to condolence letters. The book is well organized and easy to adapt to contemporary, real life situations. It makes a great gift for the business people in your life.
