Book Description
This comprehensive book covers all aspects of provision of ice rinks and swimming pools. Highly illustrated with photographs and diagrams, it gives guidance to architects and others on the design of the whole facility, from structural considerations to building services.
Sport in all its many forms is enjoyed every day by hundreds of millions of people around the world and provides significant social and physical benefits for its participants. At the same time it faces intense competition for a share of their leisure time and disposable income. To retain its international and universal appeal, sport must offer both participants and spectators easy access to well designed, high quality facilities and ancillary services. The design of these facilities offers a particularly high profile challenge to architects and designers. Few other types of public building or facility are likely to be used by such a high proportion of the population.
The definitive comprehensive reference, with the authority of the Sports Council
Covers the whole facility

Book Description
What might Baghdad and Manhattan look like after a nuclear assault? The relevance of such a question lends a more than chilling aspect to this little book, which pieces together the "before" and "after" of a story whose moral we seem to have forgotten. Before: snapshots taken of Hiroshima after the atom bomb leveled the city in 1945. After: a set of extraordinary photographs by Harold Edgerton, hired in the 1950s by the U.S. government to document its nuclear tests.

Flawed but Entertaining.......2005-07-18
"You Did What?" is a collection of tales of decisions that were at best foolhardy and at worst disastrous. Various authors contribute to this work, and the quality of the chapters varies as a result (there are quite a few examples of bad grammar and poor sentence structure throughout the book). Overall, the book is entertaining. Different subjects of varied historical significance are covered, from the Trojan Horse debacle and President Harrison's refusal to wear a coat at his frigid inaugural, to the "Heidi Bowl" and the bad career decisions of several TV actors. This is a quirky book that's rather light on any deep historical information or insight, and the mistakes in writing can be disconcerting. Overall, though, it's worth checking out for some lighthearted reading.
Entertaining, but at least one glaring mistake.......2005-01-29
On page 219, Thomsen writes that Ronald Reagan divorced Jane Wyman, "everyone's favorite mother from 'Father Knows Best'."
Maybe he meant Jane Wyatt, who WAS the mother on 'Father Knows Best' or maybe he misplaced Jane Wyman, who was certainly no one's favorite mother on 'Falcon Crest'. The similarity of these actresses ends with the similarity of their names. Their appearance and acting would not be confused by even a casual inspection. This is an error which could easily have been avoided with only the slightest effort at research, which was evidently not done.
I found the book quite entertaining and enlightening until I got to that page. A simple, avoidable error like that one makes me question the credibility of the rest of the book.
About MacLean Stevenson.......2004-11-21
The book makes a mistake about Mr. Stevenson (Blake on MASH). The book says MS left MASH and in no time was on hello Larry. Excuse me! Hello Larry began about four years after MS left MASH.
Very good light reading for the amateur historian.......2004-10-07
Personally, I enjoyed the book. There was much I learned from this book. I knew very little of the Galveston Hurricane. I did not realize that "New Coke" is still made in certain parts of the country. I never realized that Napoleon's big mistake at Waterloo was in having the wrong adjutant in charge. Or how the Kaiser's hatred for his mother helped in causing World War 1. This and many more interesting tidbits are top be found in this book. The only problem with this book is that most of the entries are fairly modern.
By turns maddening and fascinating.......2004-09-23
Reading this terribly uneven book was the most irritating experience I've had in a long time. Its title seemed to indicate a tongue-in-cheek approach to history's gaffes and goofs, in the vein of "The Darwin Awards". Instead, the reader was often treated to rather ordinary recititations of history. The tale of Watergate was told in a straightforward style without entertainment value. The barbarian invasions of the Roman Empire were a dull, unfunny and undetailed summary (in only 7 pages !) of 400 years of Roman history. Other stories held my interest better, not due to the writing but because of the unfamiliar subject matter. The story of Ferdinand de Lesseps' first attempt to build the Panama Canal was an example. But even this tale, which tried to poke fun at de Lesseps' folly, just wasn't funny.
The book, subtitled "Mad Plans and Great Historical Disasters," is less about the folly of human beings than about the unexpected (but not mad) turns that human activities take. Who knew ahead of time that aspirin would have value while heroin would become a social scourge?
I'll say this for the book: as annoying as it was, I kept coming back to it until I finished it. That's worth 3 stars.

Everybody Was Nuts.......2004-11-17
Mad Man In Waco makes it painstakingly clear that just about everybody involved in the debacle at Waco was round-the-bend ego-tripping in a veritable orgy of self-serving agendas and sub-rosa purposes: It's hard to "spot the real loony" amid such a cast of characters. There was of course the sexually and religiously insane Vernon Howell (aka David Koresh) with his need to salve his childhood feelings of inconsequentiality with his self-adopted "messiahship." But equally dotty was the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, willing to bend its authority and its might in order to attract headlines during a budget crisis. And there was no shortage of bats in the belfry among the leadership of the FBI as it attempted to establish a level of authority that bordered upon undeclared martial law -- and a level of "command and control" and "psychological operations" that could only lead inexorably and inevitably to the fiery final conflagration.
The book also documents that "force" which may be the most dangerous of all: A sensationalistic media with a 24-7 "need to feed" and thus bringing to bear the pressure of a "watching world" on all participants.
Still something of a cipher, though: The followers of Koresh. The book does an excellent job, in the first half, of documenting the history of these offshoots of Christianity (Millerites, Adventists, Davidians and then "Branch Davidians") but must be excused for being unable to answer the one compelling question: Why? What impels otherwise rational people to follow charismatic leaders like Howell/Koresh to such a tragic ending? The book does not quite answer that -- but it certainly frames the question, and provides a compelling look at the national mindset in the late 20th Century.
Too many Mad Men.......2002-01-14
This is the most balanced treatise I have seen on the topic. The authors explore the facts thoroughly, and come to the cnclusion that both sides blew it. Most people seem to have an agenda, and want to place blame on one side or the other. This book provides insight into the lives of Koresh and his followers, as well as the government personnel involved, and discusses all the agendas, all the mistakes, and the few failed attempts to straighten things out. If we *really* want to learn from the tragedy at Waco, this book is a great starting point.
I found the book to be flippant and insensitive........1999-05-19
A book that was written in ninety days can hardly be well researched, nor can it come to any conclusions based in reality - at least this is what I have come to believe after reading this about the tragedy of Waco. Bailey and Darden are critical of everyone and everything involved with the entire case, but they do not attempt to actually understand Koresh's point of view, nor do they seem to have tried to read any of the explanations put out of Koresh himself. Undoubtedly there were problems with the way the events were managed (or mis-managed) by the American government as well as the way that Koresh and his followers reacted but what the authors neglect to realise is that Koresh was highly intelligent and certainly believed in everything that he was doing.
Really, I was unimpressed by the flippant handling of a sensitive subject and I would not recommend this to anyone that actually wants a balanced account of events.
An outraged and insightful telling of the Waco story..........1999-01-05
"Mad Man" is a hybrid fact/op-ed piece in which media, law enforcement, and religious lunatics are playing a deadly, unconscious game of hot-potato with a stick of dynamite and not quitting until the fuse burns down to the charge.
By the end of the book, media, feds, and all believers in religion throughout history are charred beyond recognition. When asked what slant he put on his book, Brad Bailey said, "Oh, I tried to be balanced."
Boy, he wasn't kidding. This book is scorched earth, and it is hard to disagree with his conclusions.
"Mad Man" has several stylistic anchor points. It is hard fact reporting, it is a sort of a reporter's diary, it's a Tom Wolfe-ish cultural documentary and commentary, a critique of religion, and a hard-core, make-you-sick grisly Police gazzette story, all laced with Bailey's trademark stunned, outraged, and eloquent rants.
The reader develops a sense of awe at the work that went into getting "Mad Man" out. You can feel Bailey killing himself banging out a thick book under a deadline more appropriate for a newspaper article. You sense two take-out cheeseburgers and a carton of smokes a day, seven days a week; you imagine the man turning in the manuscript, crawling into bed, and sleeping for four days.
Bob Darden's summary of Davidian history is comprehensive and factual, delivering essential background on the people and philosophy which led to the Waco debacle.
Many books have been written about the standoff, from all kinds of angles -- pro-law, anti-law, pro religion anti Koresh, pro-Koresh, media critiques, etc., but this is a book that lights the flame thrower and spins it freely in all directions, roasting the entire event and all participants, including every one of us in front of our TVs. And for that reason, this is perhaps the definitive book on Waco.
brilliant writing, thorough coverage.......1998-03-16
The book is *brilliantly* written. And it points out that *everyone* involved was at fault. Koresh. The FBI and ATF. The media.
Yes, Koresh was somewhere between lunatic and demon in human clothing. But that in no way absolves the feds for their thorough mishandling of the case. I don't presume to judge from God's view, but from the jury box, the feds were
Guilty! Guilty! Guilty!
The book isn't perfect. The authors consistently confuse the terminology of M16 (fully automatic weapon, incredibly difficult for most of us to ever own legally) and AR15 (the semi-automatic version, legal for anyone without a felony conviction), but otherwise they seem to have their facts nailed down pretty tightly. (Yes, I was familiar with a great deal of this long before I found this book!)
About all that's missing is the pathetic showing of the state at the trial, but they finished the book before that, and it wasn't their focus, anyway.

Customer Reviews:
Read ALL you can by Robert Bly!.......2007-09-28
I was blown away by the information in this book! I wanted inside secrets to help me have a successful business, and that is exactly what I got. Not only "secrets" but plenty of right-on advice! If you truly want to be a successful freelancer, then this is one that should be on your shelf. This is the 2nd book I've read by Robert Bly, and I will read all I can get.
Everything You Wanted to Know About Being a Copywrighter.......2007-09-24
This book is loaded with lots of good information and gives you a very precise picture of the copywriting business. Whether you are interested in writing advertising copy or other types of free lance writing, it's an excellenct resource book for any writer to have. The information was well organized and easy to reference. Highly recommended.
You Should Read This!.......2007-07-28
Considering a freelance career in copywriting? Then you should read this. Once again Bob Bly has come up with a clear, concise book that touches on all the basics you need to know to get your new business up and running.
I bought this years ago when I was starting out as a professional copywriter, and it was--and is--an invaluable resource.
Tremendous Valuable Information.......2007-04-10
In Secrets of a Freelance Writer, Third Edition, Bob Bly does a tremendous job sharing information about starting out as a freelance writer. I liked that he has updated the information so it's valid and applicable to the 2000s (first decade). Although it's an advanced read - long chapters and sections - it's filled with tremendous amounts of information. I feel I got my money's worth and will gladly take on the challenge of other Bly books, knowing I'll have bundles of reference information in my collection.
Gotta have it........2007-04-05
SECRETS OF A FREELANCE WRITER by Bob Bly is a bit of rehash. Yes, I know, this is a thrid edition and is supposed to be an updated rehash, but there is also a lot of content here from some of Bly's other books, such as The Copywriter's Handbook. The thing is, there is also enough new and valuable content here to make this another "must read" for copywriters.
This book also very closely mirrors Peter Bowerman's Well-Fed Writer with much of the same content. That's not necessarily a bad thing and just adds confirmation to the advice being given.
I wont begin to talk about what you might take away from this book. Different people are going to take away different ideas. But suffice it to say, you WILL learn a lot here. Even though this plate has leftover vegetables, the meat is hot off the grill.
Book Description
While many freelance writers struggle to earn a living wage, Bob Bly has proven year after year that it's not only possible to earn far more, it's possible to to transform words into a $100,000 a year freelancing business.
Customer Reviews:
Great Guide to Financial Freedom!.......2006-12-06
Thanks to Bob Bly's books, and this one in particular, I've successfully made the transition from corporate attorney to freelance copywriter! Bob Bly gives step-by-step, easy to follow tips, instructions and ideas for building a successful writing business. Some authors discuss theory at length - not Bob Bly. He touches on theory only when it's critical to understanding the concept. Otherwise, he sticks with practical, 'here's what and how to do it' type of information. If you're considering a freelance writing career, don't pass up this book! /s/ Lynn Roberts, Attorney-turned-Writer
We've Changed Printers.......2006-08-18
Maury Erickson of Filbert Publishing here. I'm one of the people who published this book.
I thought I'd take a moment to reply to a couple comments on this Amazon page.
Yes. I totally agree. In the beginning of our publishing history, we dealt with some definite quality control issues. Thing is, we were hoping to create an earth-friendly product made by local talent. Clearly, that vision didn't work well in the long run. Suffice it to say that we're now printing this title elsewhere and the finished product looks fantastic.
Bob Bly is one of the most generous individuals we've ever dealt with. He's as nice in person as he appears in his books. The information he provides honestly works. You don't need a big-time education. You don't need to be blessed by luck. Just a little elbow grease and know-how will take you very far in the freelance writing profession. Just ask my wife. She's a Bly fan and is currently reaping the benefits.
I appreciate your comments and wish all of you the very best in your freelance endeavors.
Good advice on a wide variety of writing related topics.......2006-07-02
This book is a compilation of previously published articles and covers a wide variety of topics such as: book proposals, technical writing, setting fees, speaking etc.
I found a great many golden nuggets of information in these pages. I'd recommend this book for all those who would like to get a good taste of the breadth of Bob's wisdom.
As others have mentioned, the binding is not the best, but I was gentle with the book while reading it, and didn't have any pages fall out. Even with the binding issue, I consider this a worthwhile investment.
If I had purchased it, I would have returned it.......2006-04-01
I was given this book as a gift and made it to about page 20, at which point I threw it in my recycling bin.
I'm sure there is valuable information to be found in the book somewhere, but the quality of binding is so exceptionally poor that it was a pain to read even before the pages start falling out.
It is great that Mr. Bly makes over $100k a year, though disappointing that at this point in his career he is cutting corners to up profits by self-publishing such an utter rip-off.
Fantastic Guide.......2005-09-30
Bob Bly's books are a godsend. They are easy to follow and honest about the business. A must have.
Customer Reviews:
Not the best book on the subject, but a nice supplement.......2004-01-06
That's probably not really high praise, but this book just doesn't seem as useful as "The Well Fed Writer" or some of Bob Bly's books on the subject of freelance copywriting.
To her credit, the author is sometimes strikingly blunt and honest, admtting that it will probably take years for most to reach a six figure income (if ever). But she also seems to spend a little too much time patting herself on the back and occassionally becoming to harsh. I don't know, maybe she was going for a brutally honest approach. It does work at times but it also is off putting at other times.
She does offer some ideas that others don't really cover in their books. Still, I would recommend getting "The Well Fed Writer" first and then supplementing the information there with this book. It certainly can't hurt to include it in your arsenal if you are seeking to become a freelance writer.
A mixed review - but mostly I liked it.......2003-04-26
...Overall, I found the thoughts shared in this book to be valuable for anyone who wants to be a freelance. And frankly, I appreciated Nancy's honesty that earning a six-figure income from writing takes time - sometimes 10 years or more. Personally, I'm weary of reading authors who promise overnight success. Nancy's views on long-standing hard-work to success seems to be more in keeping with my experience...
Some good advice, but not worth buying.......2002-05-02
I started reading this book, and while it seems to have some good points, the writing is pretty bad (strange for a book on writing to be poorly written). She keeps repeating herself over and over, about how successful she is. While trying to inspire, she is also depressing, that it may take years or decades to get yourself established. I don't think so...sounds like she's just trying to make money from this book, yet wants to discourage any new competition! Take my advice and buy the "Well Fed Writer" by Peter Bowerman. His advice is better, his writing is funny and very readable, and he doesn't speak to the reader like they're a moron. Which Flynn does, by the way.
Hubris.......2001-06-17
If you're a Type A personality, this is the book for you. If you're not, I suggest 'Secrets of a Freelance Writer' by Robert W. Bly or 'The Well-Fed Writer' by Peter Bowerman. Both authors deliver accurate, detailed and practical information; but, unlike Ms. Flynn, they do it with grace, style, humor and a modicum of humility. Both Bly and Bowerman lack hubris.
I agree with the reviewer from Massachusetts: the overall tone of this book depresses me. Ms. Flynn is condescending at times. For example, she writes: "Have a problem with networking? Get over it." She reminds us in almost every chapter how successful she is. While this may add validity to her ideas, the tone gets tedious. So does wringing every last dollar from a client.
To be fair, Ms. Flynn's section on avoiding sexist language is useful. Buy Bowerman's or Bly's book. You'll be able to make a good living as a freelance writer and still look at yourself in the mirror. As Ms. Flynn writes: "Making $100,000 as a freelance writer is not for everyone." Thank goodness, she is right.
$100,000 Worth of Knowledge Well Worth It.......2000-10-20
Before I read Nancy Flynn's book, I had contemplated doing freelance business writing work, however, I had no idea what types of projects there were, let alone what to charge. I thought that a few hundred dollars an issue was a good price to charge for a newsletter. Boy was I wrong, and I have Nancy to thank for expanding my vision.
Not only does her book help the aspiring young (or old) writers develop fees for their projects, it helps the inexperienced writers broaden their business with supplemental products. That alone can double a writer's income. I didn't even know what a media list was before I read her book. Now, I not only know what it is, but I know how to use it to maximize my business writing income.
Anybody who has even remotely considered freelance writing or starting their own business writing company needs to read this book. Not reading it could cost them a fortune.
