    4 out of 5 stars Professional-quality art, but..........2005-01-24

It's obvious professional mecha toy artists worked on this book. The book is packed with well-rendered mecha and clear diagrams on the transformation process. You learn how to break down a normal, everyday vehicle and fold it into a robot with a minimum of artistic "cheating" with proportions.

While most how-to-draw books try to simplify the drawing of a complex subject, this book attempts to complicate the process of drawing over-simplified mechs. Remember those Go-bots that were neat, but not as complex or organic as the Transformers? Plex designed them and it shows. The book teaches you how to design simple, clunky Gobots and Power Rangers robots that can easily be translated into toys. If this is what you want, this book may be for you. If you want a greater variety of mecha styles to learn, or more inspiration on how to come up with your own styles, I'd recommend the great books by Sherard Jackson of Antarctic Press and the How to Draw Manga volumes translated from Japanese published by Graphic-Sha: "Giant Robots" by Hikaru Hayashi and "Mech. Drawing" by Katsuya Yamakami.

The pro-Plex propaganda smattered throughout the book reads like a corporate statement of a company about to go IPO. You shouldn't have to pay so much for a blatant advertisement.

Buy the book if you really want to draw transforming robots and like the particular design aesthetic that Plex embraces.

4 out of 5 stars A useful introduction to drawing transformable mecha........2004-10-17

The first thing that is readily apparent upon flipping through the book is that the presentation is very straightforward and to the point. There is a LOT of artwork and comparatively little text, which presents a good step-by-step visual tutorial for drawing.

There are a great many types of transforming robots discussed in the book, with one or more examples for each. Everything from aircraft to cars to insects to dinosaurs, and more.

The art quality is very good, with an obviously professional hand behind the pen.

There are a couple things that detract from this book, however. Firstly, there is almost no reference to the mechanics behind the transformations - no hydraulics, gears, etc. The book's origins in the toy business are evident here. Second, there are no references to other mainstream transformers - like Macross Valkyries, Transformers, etc.

Even with these minor quibbles though, I still have to give this book 4 out of 5. It can be a very good introduction to drawing transforming robots. Just be aware that it's an introduction, and not an advanced guide!

Let's Draw Manga: Transforming Robots, is a great book, written by a notable company. The moment I opened the book, I knew that I was going to learn alot of things, and I was very excited. I am one who is also getting into the manga biz, and I also love to learn whatever I can, from what ever can teach me. And this book showed me that I can take practically any object in this world, and turn it into a robot.

By using the techniques they show you in this book, you are able to turn planes, trains and automobiles into any kind of robot imaginable. And with the techniques they show you on how to transform a animal, the possiblities are quite endless, depending on your limit of imagination. By using the tips and tricks they taught me, I was able to transform a PlayStation1 into a robot!

I found this book very promising in my future as a manga artist, and I'm sure you would be able to learn as much as I, or even more.

2 out of 5 stars Uninspiring for general use. OK for researching PLEX........2004-08-03

The book has a good premise, and the cover art is interesting. Unfortunately, the contents between the covers fail to live up to the promise.

If you can avoid choking on the force-fed propaganda that the PLEX company is, and always has been, the only company in the world that makes transforming robots, you'll be tripped up by the boring designs and uninspired art. While there is good art and the occasional basic concept to be found, they won't be on the same pages.

There are several much better books on the same subject. If you must consider purchasing this volume, please get hold of a copy and flip through it first before committing to purchase.

What drags this book up from the depths of uselessness is that it's a rough guide to the way PLEX designers think. If you need to sketch a couple of robots that mimick the simplistic PLEX look, this book gives you some design boundaries for avoiding too much mechanical elegance or visual appeal.

"You Can Draw Transforming Robots" is an excellent resource for the Amateur or Professional artist. This book thoroughly examines almost all of the different types of Transforming Robots, from the unforgettable Optimus Prime Mack Truck to the Valkyrie style Robots from the Macross Saga. Each type of Transforming Robot is broken down into its simple shapes, making it easy to understand just exactly how the Robots Transform. Once you understand the Transformations of the Robots the book then gradually adds detail to the Robot to show you the multiple levels of intricacy, until you see the robots final detailed form. If you love Transforming Robots like I do, you will definitely want to pick up this book.

When I received the book and looked at it, all I could see are just boxes, page after page, BUT I WAS WRONG.

Drawing transformers are not simple, but after I read this book page after page, I realized that these boxes transformed into ROBOTS I dreamed to draw ... SO, this book is like the bible of understanding how to draw Transformers, the author are incredibly simplifying this amazing art...
My advice! It's for young and adults artist for sure.

I've purchased every English-language how-to draw manga book I could find pertaining to mecha. This one ranks near the top.
Some books I've seen give good instruction on the step-by-step of how to draw, but are lacking in inspired designs. Others have good art, but are lacking in teaching you the thought process and steps needed to render your own work-they're just showcases.
Jackson-sensei manages to accomplish both his roles as teacher and source of inspiration. The book includes everything from what equipment to buy to get started to how to add character and personality to a mech.
The book covers a tough subject: transforming robots. Yet it manages to convey its concepts clearly in a manner highlighted by beautiful art.
Mr. Jackson ought to get a job at Hasbro or Takara. His designs definitely follow a the "Transformers" design philosophy, yet are unique in their detailing. The transformations look like they really work too.
What made me happiest was the last page, which promises a forthcoming volume titled "You Can! Draw Mecha".

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Photographers of the Twentieth Century.......2006-07-21

Along with Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa and George Rodger, David "Chim" Seymour was on of the founders of the photographer's collective, Magnum. I have known many of Seymour's images for many years. However, Seymour has always been overshadowed by the two great masters Cartier-Bresson and Capa.

This volume is the first comprehensive retrospective of Seymour's photographic work and features 150 images, many of which have never been seen before. From 1932 to 1956, Seymour was a chronicler of some of the world's most important historical events. His photographs do not have the sheer bravado and manic energy of Robert Capa or the crazy brilliance of Henri Cartier-Bresson. What sets David Seymour apart is the humanity of his images. His photographs of war orphans are some of the most powerful and deeply sad images that I have ever seen. Seymour was also a master but in a more subtle way.

I am so happy that I discovered this book. I knew that David "Chim" Seymour was a major artist of the Twentieth Century. This volume has allowed me to better understand his genius. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars CHILDREN AND HUMAN NATURE.......2005-07-29

This book is filled with incredible photographs, capturing the spirit of humanity (especially children), when the world around them isn't always so bright.

I was mesmerized at the depth of emotion that David Seymour's photographs reflect. This publication is truly an incredible work of art.

5 out of 5 stars great book, great man.......2001-08-12

This book is a biographical gem. It reviews the life and photography of David Seymour in an understated style of writing which was the man himself; bald, spectacled, yet powerful in his humanity and in his skill at nurturing friendships with photography as a shared interest. He lived a romantic European life of high times and tragic personal losses including his own premature death in 1956.The photographs are brilliant. Foreground and background tell a story in many of the photos. It is not a book of nudes or still-lifes. It is more intimate than that.

                        Book Description

The market fall during the week of April 10th to 14th, 2000, is a timely reminder that modern finance is unable to monitor the "health" of a market. "A Rational Approach to Unsystematic Risk, Re-Thinking Modern Finance" enables market managers to determine the health of their markets.

Unsystematic risk is composed of financial, operational, economic and strategic risks. Systematic risk on the other hand, is the day-to-day share price risk exhibited by a market. New financial models, based on heterogeneous investors' expectations, derived from John Burr Williams's Dividend Discount Model demonstrate that portfolios consist of 80% unsystematic risk and 20% systematic risk. In essence, unsystematic risk is vital to managing markets, portfolios and companies.

A wide range of financial issues from corporate risks, portfolio management, stock exchange management, market players and market manipulation are discussed. These topics inform us on how unsystematic risk can be used to better manage your investment funds and your companies.

For example, in the first half of the 1990s, the New York Stock Exchange exhibited the Weak-Form and Strong-Form of market efficiency, 84% and 81% of the time, respectively. (The Efficient Market Hypothesis is finally quantified in this book.) The best managed, stock exchange during this same period (out of 9 in the US, Europe and Asia) was Hong Kong, exhibiting Weak-Form and Strong-Form of market efficiency, 100% and 91% of the time, respectively.

Unsystematic risk is used to optimize portfolios to provide better risk-return relationships than the market can provide. Yes, the market can be beaten on a risk-adjusted basis, and markets are only as efficient as the market players and market instruments, i.e. markets are not efficient.

The examples in this book demonstrate how one can build a risk-minimized or a return-maximized portfolio, using dynamic programming techniques.

Both example portfolios provide risk-return ratios of 2.96 (4.86% risk & 1.64% return) and 2.08 (5.23% risk & 2.52% return) respectively. This is much better than the market portfolio of 3.57 (5.79% risk & 1.62% return). If your fund manager does not believe this ask him to read this book.

If you are interested in how cash flow affects your company's share price, this book explains how unsystematic risk is created by cash flow and how you can use this information to manage your business in such a manner as to maximize your share price. The examples, from the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange, show that Nestle is better managed than Matsushita but a local company, Genting Bhd., is better managed than either of them. Their average risks are 0.478, 0.933 and 0.170 respectively. The risk-ranking scheme presented in this book recognizes the 'super-blue-chip' category. No company made it to this category, not even the multinationals.

The risk-ranking scheme presented in this book, ranks the total company risk, unlike the ranking schemes used by rating agencies such as Standard & Poors, and Moody, which use credit risk to rank companies.

This book is the first step to improving the U.S. competitive position by altering the commonly held perception and handling of corporate risks. Which came first, abominable writing or the computers on which that writing is wrought? Either way, say Patricia T. O'Conner and Stewart Kellerman in You Send Me, "much of what passes for writing in cyberspace is dreadful." Sending e-mail, joining chat rooms, and putting up Web sites is so easy that you might think the writing doesn't matter. Guess again. "When you write well, you connect," say the authors. "When you write badly, you don't." Some of You Send Me--lessons on grammar, punctuation, spelling, and confusing words--applies to all writing; the rest is tailored to online writing, particularly e-mailing. There's advice on writing subject lines, getting to the point, and getting the facts right. The authors recommend politeness and discretion, the use of the Shift key, and the inclusion of greetings and closings. Ask permission before sending attachments, they advise, "don't put anything in an office e-mail that you wouldn't want the whole office to see," "go easy on the Forward button," and "never hit Send in anger." And remember: "The less time you spend thinking about your message," they say, "the more time someone else has to spend reading it." --Jane Steinberg

                        Book Description

Patricia T. O'Conner, the bestselling language maven who demystified grammar (Woe Is I) and writing (Words Fail Me) for legions of delighted readers, now takes on the challenge of polishing our electronic language skills.

E-mail and the Internet need not be the death of good writing. In fact, the computer could be the best thing to happen to literacy since the printing press. Since we're all writing all the time, You Send Me helps us polish up our language and social skills in cyberspace.

Dealing with subjects like etiquette ("To E or Not to E"), beefier writing ("The E-Mail Eunuch"), and civilized English ("Go Configure"), the authors deliver everything you need to know to achieve virtual savvy. If you'd like to upgrade your e-mail and other online writing, this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars A Useful Edition and Addition on Language.......2002-08-12

If you want your grammar and writing lessons sane, sober, serious, skip this book because the jokes, plays on words and plain old fun will drive you crazy.

But if you need light, useful advice about writing in cyberspace, or quick reminders about using numbers correctly, office etiquette, or brush-ups on grammar and writing, and have a laugh in the process, this book is for you. I highly recommend it.

O'Conner's books (Woe Is I, Words Fail Me, and now, You Send Me) remind me of an editor I work with who is a pun a minute. She can't stop herself and every conversation with her takes such twists and turns that the less articulate are left several sentences behind. If I didn't know that editor, I'd think that O'Conner and Kellerman had to have spent hours creating her more painful plays on words for some of their chapter and section titles:
                        Grammar a la Modem
                        Lurk Before You Leap
                        Go Configure
                        Clone Rangers
                        Myth Information
                        A Click and a Promise
                        Help for the Whomless

And on and on and on. I suspect it just spills out of them, fed by their obvious exuberance for their work.

But all of these little plays are wrapped around very helpful bits of logical suggestions and advice delivered in a conversational style. While ostensibly meant to deal with the horrific onslaught of wretched writing that shows up in
our e-mail, much of the book's advice can be applied to other writing. The team also reminds us of the need for accuracy in numbers and other facts, pointing out the difficulties so many people have with noticing what should be obvious exaggerations or faulty understanding of numbers.

O'Conner and her husband-coauthor divide this book into three sections:

The Virtual Mensch, which examines protocol issues--when to use e-mail, the need for subject lines, choice of e-mail names, keeping the reader in mind and more.

Alpha Mail, which focuses more closely on better writing (with such advice as divide long sentences into shorter ones, break the message into paragraphs); eliminating cliches, which includes a list of cliches followed by an authors' comment, e.g., acid test (Give it an F), diamond in the rough (cubic zirconium),
draw a blank (so fill it in), easier said than done (Then say it); the need for the writer to re-read an e-mail before sending it, and other topics.
Words of Passage, which takes the authors right back to their real issue,
language. Among other topics, they take us through easy lessons on it/its/it's/
and who/whom, subject-verb agreement and punctuation.

This book is a handy addition to the bookshelf of any editor or writer interested in how the language is or should be used.
