Harry Callahan (1912–1999) was one of the most influential photographic artists of the twentieth century. A master of modernist experimentation, Callahan explored a range of subjects—from landscapes to city streets to portraits of his wife—and techniques throughout his career.

Wonderful biography of a gifted artist.......2007-08-29

This is a wonderful book on the creative life of one of the 20th century's most creative photographic artists. It is so much more than a "mere" biography.

What sets this biography (which a generous sampling of Callahan's work) apart from other books in this genre, is its elegant focus on the creative aspects of photography. In discussing Callahan's dedication to constant experimentation, choice of subject matter, his visual approaches to a particular shot, selection of themes and improvisations, sequential ordering, and the all important print process, the book provides a rare invaluable resource to the inner reflections of an artist at work (and play). Callahan's lifelong body of work is testament to the fact that an artist need not travel to the ends of the earth to find beauty; beauty is not just in the eyes of the beholder, but in the dedication and loving attention to craft and creative experimentation in one's backyard.

Ever since Harry Callahan died in 1999 I have been waiting for a major evaluation of his undeniably historic contribution to twentieth century photography. "Harry Callahan: The Photographer at Work." is another of several tantalizing introductions to Callahan's oeuvre that fails to dig deep enough and wide enough to make much of an impact on those passingly familiar with his body of work. There are only a very few photographs that have not been published before.

I want a catalogue raisonne or as close to it as the holders of his photographs can aspire to. I want a significant analysis of the imagery that goes far beyond the oft repeated "magical, mysterious, intuitive" pieties of most current writing including the book under review. I want a writer with a vivid imagination to sit down with all the grass photographs, all the Eleanor photographs, all the Cape Cod photographs and say something that allows the viewer to appreciate the psychological depth of Callahan's imagery.

Alternative View.......2005-12-24

Any decent photographer knows about the work of Ansel Adams. Sure, he is well known for his black and white work, but many of us have wondered about his work in color. This book presents some good photos, but the main thing is the text (and there isn't too much of it, which is good). It includes analysis, but also comments from Ansel himself (articles, interviews, etc.). Definitely worth reading. I was going to just breeze through the pretty pictures, but when I started reading the text, I had to read all of it.

I got a copy of this recently and it is a truly interesting book.
The use of colour displays a profound vision and shows a great
understanding of the necessity for colours to work together in an image,
sometimes harmoniously, sometimes in contrast.

It is truly as great as the B&W work Adams is so well known for?
To be honest no, but he was still working towards a vision of
how to use colour in his work, so it remains a work in progress.
Given another 50 years I have no doubt that Adams would have
colour work every bit as good as his B&W.

You could learn a lot from the images in this book, possibly
all the more because it isn't a really polished work which can
seem a bit inaccesible to us lesser mortals.

Will the Real Ansel Adams Please Stand Up.............2002-07-13

Many reviewers make quite clear a fact about Ansel Adams regarding his own colour photography: That he did not want it published, for his own lack of control over the medium was substandard to the exacting methods he employed in his black-and-white prints. Without reservation, agreed.

But what most of Ansel Adams' most fervent admirers won't admit was that this book of colour prints made from transparencies belie the legendary artist's alleged "genius" for composition. Many of the compositions within are colour versions of famous black-and-white prints, the most famous being Half Dome at Yosemite.

I wish that aspiring photographers' introduction to Ansel Adams be similar to that of a Japanese photography assistant I once employed. She had never seen Adams' work (not as popular in the Far East as in the States) prior to this book. Her words regarding this book were "he takes pleasant photographs of pretty subjects in nature." I later introduced her to Adams' black-and-white "greatest hits" that Little, Brown, also published. Her assessment: "His compositions are generally conventional, but not novel. But, with a red filter while shooting and many darkroom methods and formulas, he uses technique to bring drama to his prints."

Ditto. It was refreshing to hear this opinion of Adams, because my friend did not have the yoke of artistic correctness hanging about her neck to remind her to speak of Adams in reverent, hushed, tones as some great "master" as though he were the photographic equal of Rembrandt, Vermeer or Rodin.

What Adams' admirers most fear about this book is that it will lay waste to all the decades of carefully designed PR Adams' publicity machine and his heirs have promulgated in their hagiographic transmogrification of a pretty good artist and a peerless technician into "St. Ansel."

The truth of the matter was that Ansel Adams made pretty pictures of pretty landscapes. And, that's what you'll get in this book. If you want the illusion of great art, turn to any of his volumes in black-and-white.

But, if you want truly great, earth-shattering black and white photography that inspires both intellect and emotion, then turn to the true masters: Walker Evans, Albert Renger-Patzsch, Robert Frank and Leni Riefenstahl.

Ansel Adams at his worst.......2002-05-06

At first, I thought I would buy this book to complete my Ansel Adams collection, despite all the bad reviews. I found this book in a library and changed my mind. This book is not worth its price for 3 reasons.
1. The quality of the color prints is very bad. The colors have faded, probably because the pictures were taken decades ago and the color technology was not good back then. Don't let the cover fools you, it is probably the best one in the whole book.
2. The reproduction is even worse. The pictures are so small you can barely make out the details.
3. Adams took a very different approach for his color photographs. The viewpoint he chose is narrow and lacking in perspective, the two most serious sins in landscape photography.
It makes me think that, instead of trying to make a reader like Adams' color photographs, the publisher of this book is trying very hard to make sure that a reader will hate them - just to prove Adams' own point.
If you still want a book on Ansel Adams' color photograhs, wait until a better book comes along. This book is not even worth considering.

Interesting Perspective on the Limits of Adams' Genius.......2000-11-16

"I can truthfully say I can remember only two or three color photographs that are worth remembering." -- Ansel Adams

Ansel Adams long felt that color photography was not art and not consistent with his vision of his own photography. What we have in this volume are almost totally unpublished and unexhibited images from his transparencies that he chose not to publish or exhibit. In other words, these are mostly his rejects. So, this is like pawing through his working files of sketches rather than his finished work, in an unauthorized way. How does that make you feel? Hmmm.

For me, the benefit of this volume was to better understand the brilliance of how his processing of black and white images played into the success of his best work. This book contains 50 images that clearly do not have the full Ansel Adams feel and impact.

The strength of this volume is the plenitude of material on what Adams had to say about color photography in general and his own. These points are nicely characterized in the essay by James L. Enyeart. One of the key problems for Adams was that he could "see" the final black and white image he wanted to create in his mind before taking a photograph, but could not "see" the color image in advance. He was not one to take hundreds of exposures hoping to have one or two turn out to be interesting. The art of photography for him was always a deliberate one, not an accidental process. While many color photographers used Polaroid stills as tests in this way, Adams did not want to do so.

Another problem was that early color processing did not allow him the control over the final image that black and white processing did.

Perhaps the ultimate problem was that "the most difficult subject for color photography was landscape." "The image -- to the photographer -- is a very different experience from what the viewer might receive from it." Think of a photograph then, as "a simulation of a perception of the world around us . . . ." A color photograph tended to destroy Adams' preference for understatement, and desire to show subtle connections. In fact, you will often see poor photography literally shouting with color that overwhelms the senses to no purpose.

Harry M. Callahan took on the thankless task of picking out some images to put in the book. He did this solely on aesthetic grounds, reflecting his own taste. While I do not know what he did not select, I was interested to see that a few works seemed to carry off Adams' desire for subtlety in new ways by showing additional detail in the shadows that are missing in his parallel black and white images. A Concise Compilation.......2000-04-27

Harry Callahan was the most influential and important figure in photography throughout the last half of the 20th century. This edition of his work shows chronologically how Callahan's approach to the medium evolved and changed, while his vision remained ever faithful to modernity. The book begins in Detroit, where Callahan worked for Chrysler while pursuing photography as a serious hobby. It was also during this time that he married Eleanor Knapp, who would later become the subject for many of his strongest images. The accompanying essay by Sarah Greenough is succinctly written, blending biographical information to the photographs Callahan took throughout his long, photographic journey (Callahan died in 1999). Callahan's outlook on photography changed dramatically after having met Ansel Adams, at a photography workshop in Detroit. Taking some of Adams' philosophy and refining it, Callahan created his own style of photographing/printing, made apparent by such images as `Weeds in Snow' and `Detroit, 1942'. In these images and throughout the rest of his life, Callahan easily turned the simplest subject matter into monumental works of photographic art. The book provides powerful examples of this, in both black & white and color. After leaving his job to pursue photography full time, Callahan moved to Chicago and taught at the Institute of Design. Continuing the experimentation he began in Detroit, Callahan worked and refined his style during his Chicago years, utilizing double exposure, collage, close-ups, and the use of positive and negative space. The book then turns to Callahan's New England period. It was during this time that Callahan taught at the Rhode Island School of Design, in Providence. The book captures this period vividly, with images of varying contrast and mood. Here we see Callahan's ability at adapting to his environment by producing increasingly poetic images of nature, as well as urban and suburban street scenes. In his later work from 1972-1992, the photographs in "Harry Callahan" document the photographer's travels in other countries, with an increased attention on color. It remains clear by the images shown in his later years, that Callahan continued to explore photography by constantly challenging himself and the medium. Where most photographers are known for one particular style or body of work (Cartier-Bresson's `decisive moment' or Robert Frank's publication of The Americans), Callahan is known for many different styles and bodies of work. A d20 Modern RPG book.

A very intriguing setting.......2006-03-27

At first I only had this product in PDF form, and I now have the print version. Now that you have that perspective, I can begin the review.

I applaud Hyrum for making a Modern/Pulp setting based off of D&D. Not that there's anything wrong with d20 Modern, per se, I just feel that basing it off D&D is better for this particular setting.

Psionics: As a long time role player, I have seen several versions of psionic mechanics ranging from the AD&D2E Psionics handbook, to the skills and feats method presented here. I like the idea of being able to improve on abilities with some effort, and thus I'd have to say that FK's treatment of psionics is thus-far my favorite for a D&D-rooted setting. Especially the Advanced Psionic Skills section, where you need to meet prerequisites before you can even purchase the skill.

Hero Points: they serve a similar function to Action Points in d20 Modern, though the effect is different. I do like they advantage they give if you don't feel the need to spend them in a given level, and I like that they "reset" at each level. IMO that is one flaw of Action Points in d20 Modern, if they are not spent, or minimally spent, they continue to grow arbitrarily high. I've never been a fan of "sitting numbers".

Martial Arts: The idea of Martial Arts as a skills and feats system is not something new to me. I have seen it used to good effect in both volumes of Blood & Fist, as well as in Oriental Adventures.

Firearms Rules: Now here's something I really like. Build your gun, from the ground up. Added mechanics that I think really improve this section are: Accuracy, Penetration, and Recoil. Guns should be a bit better at accuracy than archaic ranged weapons. Since armor grants a Protection - it's like Damage Reduction - and reduces defense in Forbidden Kingdoms, this acts as an "armor piercing" rating for determining damage once your round(s) hit. Recoil . . . yeah, guns give you feedback. The more feedback you get, the lower the accuracy modifier. Sure, they only give you two example guns in this section, but with all the creation rules, it's more than enough. I especially liked the Showdown rules. Additional firearms statistics are given in the Equipment chapter.

Weird Science: Mostly useful for Steampunk and Tesla Time, although if you work outside the suggested timeline, there's no reason you couldn't create a character similar to Doc Brown from Back to the Future. An example item and weapon or two would have been a nice addition.

Aside from a few editing problems, the only other thing that detracts from this work is what seems like edition confusion. On the lists of class skills, some are based in D&D 3.0, others in D&D 3.5, and still others have both, giving this an "edition 3.25" feel.

For the printed format, I must say that I like the shape and size of the book. Having gaming books take up most of your section of the table has been a hassle in the past.

Great basis for pulp adventures, albeit some quirks.......2004-08-23

First things first: The FK-book comes in a nice and handy format with high quality illustrations. I wish other publishers would consider the same format. It is an easier read in the comfy chair, and does not take up the entire gaming table.

The chapters on the steam-punk and nazi-thug ages are most entertaining, setting the scenery and delivering some good points of inspiration. Unfortunately, as is so often the case with new and daring RPGs, there is a lack of ready-for-use adventures. Some stating adventures would be nice, especially since such are hard to find and otherwise would require a lot of GM-work. A user-friendly chapter with NPC-templates, locations and artifacts, similar to the D20 Modern Menace Manual would be a nice addition. Maybe even a time-line? The Cthulhu 3rd edition is a good example of an RPG with a lot of extra material for setting the stage.

The book contains all I would ever need on firearms, psionics and martial arts. Good. The weird science chapter could do with some examples ready for use in play, like war-of-the-worlds tripods, ray-weapons and rocket-packs...

The character classes are well done, and the dividing of hit-points into stamina and wound points is smartly done as well. The game clearly stresses simplicity, but inadverdently seems to appease the more reality-seeking gamers bent on detail and rules. The rules for auto-chases are much to burdensome in my opinion. Perfect for Car Wars but not for storytelling, counting reaction time seconds and rounds...

And, yes... Unfortunately the editing is sloppy. For instance: Some page references are simply "XX".

All in all: FK makes a good impression! It has some minor faults, but gives me a good basis for pulp adventuring. It is a book to build on. A revision would be nice, so long as the handy size and quality binding is kept in place. Far too many RPG books fall apart at the seems after a few flicks.

Would have been a 5, save for all the editting problems........2002-10-23

I would have never picked up this book, save that I won it at the 2002 GEN CON "Jenn Khan" contest.

Yes, it's 40 dollars, but I must highly recommend it once they make a revised edition.

8 new character classes are presented, and none are weak. It even includes two classes that use psionics; a psionic system far superior to the one that TSR published. The new prestige class are also wonderful. And the new skills would push this book up to 6 stars, especially with the stats fpor early 1900's cars and weapons.

Sadly, I could only rate this a 4, simply to the ABSOLUTELY SLOPPY editing. WHoever edited this thing should be burned in effigy. Many class description are worded purely. (One entire class does not have its benefits described; just the titles.) Numerous references to "page xx" were left in.

Still, I am looking forward to more stuff printed in this series. They just need to cut back on the price and get a new editor, stat.

You Would Do Well To Stay Away From This Man.......2005-11-01

David Lavender is adept at spinning little tales and throwing out one-liners at the expense of those gentle folks who put up with the man. However, Mr. Lavender is clearly deranged and that is never more evident than on the golf course. Should you be so unfortunate as to ever play a round of golf with this author, I assure you that you will become so unnerved by his unorthodox approach to the game (especially on the putting green) that it is unlikely that your own game will ever recover. By all means read the book, but never approach Lavender for a friendly game. If you should forsake this advice, I'm afraid the consequences will be gruesome.

Fantasy Golf is FUN!.......2005-09-13

I bought this book on a whim...I loved the title and that is what prompted me to purchase it. We all need a combination of golf, fantasy and sanity in our all too hectic, crazy lives. This book is a quick and fun read and filled with great humor by a bunch of golfers who don't take themselves too seriously. I felt as if I "knew" these guys by the time I finished the book and hope to someday meet Dave Lavender and play a round of "real golf" with him, although I am sure my handicap will prevent me from ever hitting the links with him...he's obviously far more talented them I on the green!

This book is a great read for anyone who wants a distraction and needs a fun release and a sure laugh. You'll enjoy this book, it's worth the purchase price! You'll especially enjoy hysterical commentary from all of the other Fantasy Golf participants, too. They, along with the author, certainly seem to be bunch of fun loving characters who make this book what it is...a great read! They all add to the fun of this "sane" book...all golfers needs to read this. This book will make a great stocking stuffer come holiday time for your favorite golfers, get it, they'll love it. The originality of the employment relationship lies in its flexibility. It gives managers the authority to organize work, but it also establishes limits on employees' obligations. The author argues that these limits are provided by four basic types of employment rule. Which one predominates in a given environment is the source of international diversity in employment relations. Drawing upon evidence from the US, Japan, France, Germany, and Britain, the theory is extended to show why such diversity extends deep into key areas of human resource management, such as performance management, incentive pay, and skill development. It also explains why the open-ended employment relationship continues to dominate work despite the growth of market-mediated work relations.
