Customer Reviews:
Great resource for the starting Illustrator.......2007-07-31
This is an excellent, easy read for those interested in illustrating children's books. I bought this book along with Writing with Pictures (which I do not recommend) and found this to be an incredibly valuable resource for someone NEW to the field or illustration student. The book is filled with interesting insights into the minds of various illustrators, tips for processing ideas, understanding how the basic process works when dealing with a publisher and writer, etc. It also has a great brief history of children's book illustration, and talks about what is happening today, as far as media, market, etc.
Unlike many "how-to" books, this one is actually fun to read- and very easy to finish. I have been bored to tears with how-to books in the past- but I finished this within a couple of days. It is filled with inspirational illustrations on every page, and being a very visual person, I found it delightful to read.
If you are looking for specifics- exactly how to lay out a page, exactly how to prepare a portfolio, (though it does give tips) exactly which publishers to send your work to- then you will find this book disappointing. However, if you are new to this field and want a basic overview (and a bit of encouragement) before getting a very specific book- this is the best buy out there.

A Fantastic Book!.......2007-07-10
As a hobby illustrator and a great admirer of Children's Illustration books, this book has provided a generous overview of the world of picture book publishing. Whilst, no area is covered in great depth, it's simplicity and wonderful illustrations provided more than enough information for the interested reader.
To self induluge, I would have loved to have seen some Australian illustrators mentioned though such as Mem Fox, Shaun Tan and Graeme Base as they are considered wonderful Picture Book Illustrators.
I showed this book to some of my collegues and they loved it!
THIS BOOK IS INCREDIBLE!.......2007-03-16
If you're interested in illustrating for children's books and such, don't miss this book. Full of information, how-to's, pictures, experiences, this book could very well be the aspiring children's artist's Bible! Believe me, you won't be wasting your money and this book will easily help you break into the industry as well as teaching you HOW to illustrate for children. Buy this book!
Beautiful book, fantastic overview........2007-02-24
This book is filled with lovely illustration examples. I find myself flipping through it all the time just because it's so pretty. The content is solid for an overview; you get history, types of media, practices, advice and resources. While I still feel a little overwhelmed by the process of submitting work this book has been a valuable resource.
PERFECT!.......2007-01-05
Books on this subject are hard to find, and this one is a gem! I absolutely LOVE this book! The layout is perfect with tons of illustrations and examples while keeping the text interesting and useful. I've been reading it before going to bed every night and almost want to get back up to put the theory into practice! Very practical and an enjoyable read, higly recommended for all illustrators out there!

Dinah Shore's cookbook.......2007-07-25
I use to watch Dinah Shore on TV, and she would have a
cooking segment, and she was wonderful in telling you how
to prepare the food she was making. Watching TV, you
can't ask a question, but, You didn't have a
question, she said everything you needed to know.
I use her cookbook, also and she has great recipes!

Customer Reviews:
Life revealed in fiction - You have to check it out!.......2006-03-07
WOW! What a great writer. "Someone's in the Kitchen" is the first novel of Eric Pete's that I had the pleasure of reading. I was surprised at how wrapped up I got in the characters. It was like knowing things about people you weren't supposed to. One of those times, where you overhear something at the office water cooler and cannot wait to share with your closest girlfriends. Enjoyed the realness in the fiction. Had a difficult time putting the book down. You have to check it out... Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to catching up on Mr. Pete's other novels.
The kitchen will never be looked at the same way again.......2005-06-23
This book demands a sequel. I could not get enough. I wanted more and more. The writing was incredible and the characters while flawed were likeable. I highly recommend this book it was very entertaining.
Reality Check.......2005-01-18
This story has a little bit of all of us in these characters. We may not act it all out, but it's in our hearts...the good and the bad. We've had our hearts broken, we may have even broken a few ourselves. We wanted that forbidden fruit and may have had it regardless of the consequences. This story hits home. If you're honest with yourself (no one else has to know) you're going to find yourself somewhere in this book.
Eric Pete Hits His Stride.......2004-07-07
After reading and enjoying Pete's first effort, Real for Me, I was anxious to sample his second novel. Reading Someone's in the Kitchen was like being swept along for a great joyride. In 242 pages Pete grabs your attention and takes you into the world of Reggie and Neal, but it is not a fantasy. The characters are real. You know these men and women. They are your friends, family, and co-workers. They are the people you love and the people you love to hate. It is a story about love, loss, dreams, disappointments, and growth. Pete writes about life. Enjoy the ride.
Oh yes, someone is in the kitchen.......2004-06-29
Eric does a wonderul job of developing his characters and developing the plot in this drama filled book. I found myself rooting for some characters and feeling sorry for others. If you love drama, as I do, then get this book.

Ron Chernow, the National Book Award-winning author of two astoundingly comprehensive biographies of prominent American financiers, now examines the ultimate decline of such power brokers and the corresponding rise of international money in The Death of the Banker. This surprisingly concise (but no less illuminating) volume opens with an expanded version of a speech on "the dwindling role of the financial intermediary" that he presented early in 1997; it concludes with condensed versions of his earlier books on J. P. Morgan and the Warburgs that show how the essence of financial power has changed in the 20th century.
Book Description
"For anyone interested in the world behind the business-page headlines, this is the book to read." --Publishers Weekly
With the same breadth of vision and narrative élan he brought to his monumental biographies of the great financiers, Ron Chernow examines the forces that made dynasties like the Morgans, the Warburgs, and the Rothschilds the financial arbiters of the early twentieth century and then rendered them virtually obsolete by the century's end.
As he traces the shifting balance of power among investors, borrowers, and bankers, Chernow evokes both the grand theater of capital and the personal dramas of its most fascinating protagonists. Here is Siegmund Warburg, who dropped a client in the heat of a takeover deal because the man wore monogrammed shirt cuffs, as well as the imperious J. P. Morgan, who, when faced with a federal antitrust suit, admonished Theodore Roosevelt to "send your man to my man and they can fix it up." And here are the men who usurped their power, from the go-getters of the 1920s to the masters of the universe of the 1980s. Glittering with perception and anecdote, The Death of the Banker is at once a panorama of twentieth-century finance and a guide to the new era of giant mutual funds on Wall Street.
"Chernow . . . delivers a sound, accessible account of the forces shaping capital, credit, currency, and securities markets on the eve of a new millennium. "
--Kirkus Reviews
Customer Reviews:
Top notch historical overview of investment banking.......2007-02-15
Published in 1997, this book, marking the modern transformation of banking, is a small addition to the Ron Chernow continuum of great American historical writing about finance; Hamilton, Rockefeller, House of Morgan and the Warburgs.
What's next? I can not wait.
an introduction to the history of merchant banks.......2006-08-28
Ron Chernow, who has degrees in English literature from Yale and Cambridge, has written excellent biographies of the Rockefeller, Morgan and Warburg families. In this book, which essentially is a spin-off of his other books, he explains how the economic niche that JP Morgan and the Warburgs inhabited, that of the middleman between the very wealthy and corporations and aspiring entrepreneurs, has disappeared in today's world of telephones, fax machines, the internet, the SEC, and mutual funds and venture capital.
This book grew out of a talk he delivered on the topic, with a brief summary of the Morgans and the Warburgs appended. Oftentimes talks given at conventions are in part written to fill time; this seems to be the case with this book; anyone with a bachelors in economics could summarize it on a page or two without any loss of meaningful detail, the second part is a short look at the lives of the subjects of his other books. Stylistically, the focus is on the use of elegant English, to such an extent that the book suffers under it. There certainly is a place for beautiful English in historical works, as anyone who has read Macaulay's History of England knows, but not as its own reward.
Those who want to familiarize themselves with the economic history of the great merchant bankers in an unthreatening way free of all too much economic jargon will greatly enjoy this book. PhD economists, on the other hand, will probably feel that Chernow ought to get to the point.
Excellent!.......2002-01-22
Brief, to the point and informative. A great anthology of how the financial world got from where it was to where it is now. Chernow is a master financial historian.
Nice little introduction to the history of banking in the US.......2000-06-15
I was disappointed with Chernow's tome on the Morgans, partly because, as he states in this book, it lacked thematic content. I don't think Chernow is right about banking and finance generally becoming 'democratised', even if it is changing. Global finance is still controlled by a very few fund managers and bankers, albeit with an eye to the profit margin. It may be the populace's money, but they do not decide how it gets used, and this is the crucial power in our time. Nevertheless, this is a good introduction to the subject and always readable.
Fascinating Introduction to Banking.......2000-04-07
This book provides a fascinating overview of the evolution of banking from its origins as an offshoot of general merchandising to the complex subject it's become today. Chernow skillfully and entertainingly reveals how bankers have gone from being all powerful "Masters of the Universe" to much less exalted financial bureaucrats. Chernow could have gone further, though, and extrapolated to explain how this is the natural product of capitalism, where the only true "Masters" are the vast bulk of consumers.

Book Description
This is the first book by a sociologist devoted exclusively to a general sociology of mathematics. The author provides examples of different ways of thinking about mathematics sociologically. The survey of mathematical traditions covers ancient China, the Arabic-Islamic world, India, and Europe. Following the leads of classical social theorists such as Emile Durkheim, Restivo develops the idea that mathematical concepts and ideas are collective representations, and that it is mathematical communities that create mathematics, not individual mathematicians. The implications of the sociology of mathematics, and especially of pure mathematics, for a sociology of mind are also explored. In general, the author's objective is to explore, conjecture, suggest, and stimulate in order to introduce the sociological perspective on mathematics, and to broaden and deepen the still narrow, shallow path that today carries the sociology of mathematics.
This book will interest specialists in the philosophy, history, and sociology of mathematics, persons interested in mathematics education, students of science and society, and people interested in current developments in the social and cultural analysis of science and mathematics.

Book Description
This book examines racial and ethnic discrimination in the labor markets and workplaces of western Europe. Scholars from ten different countries set out the experience and implications of this exclusion for two main groups: the more established second and third generations of post-war migrant descent, and the "new" migrants, including seasonal and undocumented workers and refugees, who are vulnerable to extreme exploitation in unregulated working environments. The book finishes by addressing the implications of these issues for trade unions and employers in Europe.
