As an architect, Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841) is considered one of finest in German history, having established a "new," patriotic German style based on the Gothic style; as a painter, draftsman, and designer of furniture, interior fittings, and stage sets, he created some of the best examples of 19th century art. His work was so admired by King Frederick William III that Schinkel acted as state architect of Prussia for nearly his entire career, designing many public buildings, palaces, and royal country estates, including the Royal Theater and Altes Museum in Berlin. So highly was Schinkel regarded that his contemporaries deemed him a genius and biographies were written about him during his lifetime.

Karl Friedrich Schinkel (Prussia 1781-1841 Berlin) was appointed Surveyor to the Prussian Building Commission shortly after the Franco-Prussian war. He designed a series of buildings that became symbols of Prussia's cultural ambitions and national pride. The general disenchantment with France led Schinkel to design in a Neo-Greco style that symbolically recalled the political and moral freedom of Athenian Greece.

GOLDEN PENINSULA.......2006-10-09

This fantastic book was recommended to me by someone I had corresponded with in the Bay Area, and he was persesion perfect. I had known about Filoli, the mansion used in Dynasty, and the palatial Carolin's, but this book educated me greatly on the shear amount of mansions on the San Franscisco Peninsula. The houses are simply spectacular and the vintage images seep off the page. The text is well researched and the book is easy to navigate. If you have any interest in beautiful mansions, or the Bay Area, or just have an appreciation for great books, then I cannot conceive of any possible way you would not be thrilled with this purchase...Highly Recommended.
