Book Description
For designers working in every medium, layout is arguable the most basic, and most important, element. Effective layout is essential to communication and enables the end user to not only be drawn in with an innovative design but to digest information easily.
Making and Breaking the Grid is a comprehensive layout design workshop that assumes that in order to effectively break the rules of grid-based design, one must first understand those rules and see them applies to real-world projects.
Text reveals top designers' work in process and rationale. Projects with similar characteristics are linked through a simple notational system that encourages exploration and comparison of structure ideas. Also included are historical overviews that summarize the development of layout concepts, both grid-based and non-grid based, in modern design practice.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for designers.......2007-09-28
It has a lot of examples and explanations of grid and grid-related layouts.
A good reference guide for designers, whether they are students ore professionals.
essential structure.......2007-09-05
You may think this book is a little dry, but it is really essential to learn how to use and when you can violate the grid when creating layouts for print or web projects. A must have for any student in graphic design. Also try Kimberly Elam's "Grid Systems" book if you need additional resources.
The big book of clarity and chaos.......2007-07-21
What a strange publication. Divided into two sections the first explaining grid formatting with actual printed material and the second revealing how to design print without a grid.
There seems a contradiction here because the grid, used intelligently, will allow a whole range of graphic options to be presented with clarity. Some of the print examples reproduced in the first section do show this with perhaps the most useful item a grid thumbnail for each piece, unfortunately I thought it was rather too small on each spread despite being the key to explaining each format. From past experience, designing magazines, I would start work on a grid by concentrating on the text type size because it is the least flexible of all the elements on the page. This point really wasn't made enough of in the book's chapter: Grid Basics.
The reproductions show a reasonable range of design solutions, essentially print though there is an example of corporate signage. Missing are magazines (consumer or trade) timetables and the like. Without a grid this type of printed matter really wouldn't exist.
The book's contradiction, to my mind, start with the second section: 'Grid Deconstructions and Non-Grid-Based Design Projects'. The forty items shown seem to have a couple of common threads: their design is essentially arbitrary which makes them look very messy and frequently their typography (display and text) is used as a design element which makes the words unreadable. Their design is the opposite of grid stimulated creativity, in other words visual chaos.
Some of the examples are quite amazing. On page 180-181 twelve pages of a calendar are shown, totally useless as its impossible to see the days and dates. Pages 188-189 show eight spreads from a design school journal showing irregular shaped blocks of text creating a sort of collage. I doubt anyone made the effort to read any of it. What is interesting about this second section material is that so much of it comes from educational establishments. In the real world all this designer whimsy would be rejected by the client on sight of the first dummy
'Making and Breaking the Grid' is well printed with 175dpi and the layout is adequate and for a book about grids you would have thought its own grid would have been included but it is strangely missing. Overall I felt that because the contents present two opposite design ideals the book's editorial concept is rather flawed.
From my experience there is only one book that really explains it all: Muller-Brockmann's Grid Systems in Graphic Design published in Switzerland and full of good solid, practical, hands-on information. This book's only purpose is creative clarity.

good.......2007-06-23
I really enjoy this book, though it is not my absolute absolute favorite. It is still a good addition to any designer's collection and it is written by one of the most knowledgeable in grid design.
It is well-thought and very interesting. A bit unlike the other grid books - in a good way.

One of the best graphic design books for exploring the grid. Lots of photos with grid diagrams -- everything from print to web projects are featured.

Book Description
Making and experiencing stories, remembering and retelling them is something we all do. We tell stories over meals, at the water cooler, and to both friends and strangers. But how do stories work? What is it about telling and listening to stories that unites us? And, more importantly, how do we change them-and how do they change us?
In The Story Is True, author, filmmaker, and photographer Bruce Jackson explores the ways we use the stories that become a central part of our public and private lives. He examines, as no one before has, how stories narrate and bring meaning to our lives, by describing and explaining how stories are made and used. The perspectives shared in this engaging book come from the tellers, writers, filmmakers, listeners, and watchers who create and consume stories.

Greatest stories ever.......2002-01-01
Ever since I was about three (I'm [age] now) I've listened to almost all her stories... my parents recorded them off the radio for me, and i usually listened to them when I went to bed. I still have "jack was born a lazy baby" going through my head. For the longest time, I had memorized the entire story "jack in the army", haints and all... This is probably the most influential part of my childhood, and when I get kids, I'll give them the same tapes I used to have.
Storytelling gem in words and photographs.......2000-10-19
Jackie Torrrence has rightly earned a reputation as the "First Lady of Storytelling." She has elevated the art of "porch style telling" to new heights, with her expressive facial and hand gestures, beautiful diction and direct approach to her listeners. Unfortunately, because of medical concerns she is not able to perform any longer, though she continues to work with apprentices in the art.
How fortunate, then, that we have this book of her favorite stories, with wonderful photographs on every page that come very close to capturing the essence of a "Jackie telling." Sprinkled liberally throughout are Jackie's tips for telling these stories, as well as her personal philosophy about the various types of stories included. Most inspiring, though, is her sharing of her personal story, of her positive outlook on life and the will to accept and work with whatever burdens we might face. This volume is highly recommended for lovers of story everywhere.
THANK YOU JACKIE!.......1998-06-22
Until a week ago I was ignorant of Jackie Torrence's existence. "I don't know how effective this book will be for someone who is unfamiliar with this wonderful lady" states an earlier review. After hearing just a snippet on NPR about the book, I rushed to get it, and have truly enjoyed it. Jackie has made me a storyteller! Parents, aunts, uncles, educators, sages, grandparents, and anyone who enjoys entertaining should open this book. Jackie provides traditional stories with cues and suggestions on how to bring the words alive. The book works. I'll never be Jackie, but my nephews love my new-found talent. The photographs are heartwarming.
This book is a gift from the fairy godmother of storytelling.......1998-06-15
Jackie Torrence is truly one of the greatest living storytellers and has been at the very heart of the Storytelling Renaissance. To hear her is the best, and audio--even video--tapes cannot help but lack the fire and energy of Jackie herself. This book is sheer delight for someone who has heard and seen Jackie--I could hear her as if she were sitting beside me again. I don't know how effective this book will be for someone who is unfamiliar with this wonderful lady, but it does offer many specific, powerful techniques for storytelling performance that are effective even for the beginner. For those of us who know and love Jackie, it is a treat to sit down and hear and see her in these exquisite photographs which truly, as well as still photography can, capture the magic of Jackie Torrence's quicksilver expressions and dancing hands. If you can't have Jackie, have this book. But do what you must to hear and see Jackie in person too!

Book Description
Much research has been done on the social messages conveyed to children reading or listening to fairy tales. In this highly original study, the emphasis shifts from content to linguistic expression. The language and linguistic organization of a dozen versions, old and new, of the Little Red Riding Hood story are analyzed using a variety of theoretical approaches, including Critical Discourse Analysis, Conversational Analysis, Functional Grammar and Critical Stylistics, to uncover the contribution of fairy tales to the discourse of gender relations over time.

Fairy Tales, Linguistics, and Feminism.......2004-07-08
Recently, Catherine Orenstein authored a book about Little Red Riding Hood through the ages, titled 'Little Red Riding Hood Uncloaked', studying the tale's influence in popular culture and vice versa. The book made great armchair reading for anyone slightly interested in the subject.
Now Alessandro Levorato has published a more scholarly study of the famous fairy tale in 12 versions published over the past 300 years. She takes the seldom used linguistics approach to studying the tale, breaking down each tale into word choices and meanings, as well as other nuances of grammar and language usage. This is not easy reading, but it is meaningful. Levorato's study is divided into six main sections with a final section summarizing the conclusions drawn from the entire study. The texts of the twelve versions show how society has changed, especially concerning gender issues. The book is recommended for anyone interested in any of the primary subjects of fairy tales, linguistics, or gender issues in literature. It should be made available in any reputable university library, too.
For anyone wondering which versions of the tale are analyzed, here is a list of the authors and titles:
1. Oral version: 'The Story of Grandmother' (l5th-l6th c., French)
2. J. Perrault: 'Little Red Riding Hood' (1697, French)
3. Brothers Grimm: 'Little Red Cap' (1812, German)
4. Sabine Baring Gould: 'Little Red Riding Hood' (1895, British)
5. James Thurber: 'The Little Girl and the Wolf' (1939, American)
6. Catherine Storr: 'Little Polly Riding Hood' (1955, British)
7. Merseyside Fairy Story Collective: 'Red Riding Hood' (1972, British)
8. O.F. Gmelin: 'Little Red Cap' (1978, German)
9. Angela Carter: 'The Werewolf' (1979, British)
10. Angela Carter: 'The Company of Wolves' (1979, British)
11. Chiang Mi: 'Goldflower and the Bear' (1979, Chinese)
12. Roald Dahl: 'Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf' (1982, British)

The Comings & Goings of David Beckham

Book Description
This extraordinary book charts David Beckham's rise to celebrity during his years in Manchester.
At the age of 3 David Beckham's parents gave him a Manchester United shirt as a Christmas present, beginning a relationship with the club that was to last a quarter of a century. He signed schoolboy terms in May 1988, eventually joining United as a trainee in July 1991 and moving up to Manchester to begin what was to become an extraordinary story.
From relatively early days, right up to his departure for Real Madrid, Eamonn and James Clarke, the Manchester paparrazi, have recorded his unofficial story-even before he came to prominence as a player and well before his meteoric rise to iconic status.
They were there when he was a young player finding his feet at the club, there to see him out and about with girlfriends or team colleagues, there when "Posh Spice" arrived on the scene, and there to see him becoming a proud father and family man.
And they were the first to photograph him, with the cut above his eye, walking in Manchester after the boot-kicking incident with Sir Alex Ferguson, when it began to dawn on everyone that David Beckham's time at Manchester United was almost over.
In an introductory text, and through extended captions, Eamonn and James Clarke describe their work and encounters with David Beckham. The two brothers have worked as the Manchester paparrazi for the last 10 years. Their images appear regularly on the front pages of the press in the UK as well as internationally in magazines.

Customer Reviews:
Fundamentals Superbly Communicated.......2000-11-26
Don't be misled. This is a manual, not a textbook. Wilkie demonstrates in her own writing precisely the same fundamentals which she recommends to others in need of strengthening their skills. She offers "9 Rules" for:
* Better Business Writing
* Pithy Presentations
* Lively Listening
* Meaningful Meetings
* Publishable Prose
What she calls "Rules" are actually guidelines. As I read this book, I was reminded of so much of what I learned while reading the fiction and non-fiction of E.B. White. He and Wilkie seem to be in almost total agreement on how to think clearly as well as to write effectively. What gives this little book special value is its direct relevance to so many different business applications. If you are having problems with both oral and written communications, if you wish to have your "messages" be understood and (better yet) have greater impact, read and then re-read this book. It would also be an excellent holiday or birthday gift for school, college, and university students. Just a thought....
Simply Excellent.......2000-03-30
Helen Wilkie, in less than 150 pages, gives you clear and easy-to-follow guidelines for business writing, presentations, listening skills, meetings, and getting articles published. As a former Corporate Communications Specialist, I found Helen's tips to be right on the money and an excellent reminder of what effective communications should be. I recommend this book to those starting out in their business careers and to those with many years of memos, meetings and presentations behind them. If you are looking for a book on business communications - put this one at the top of your list.
What a warm and inviting way to learn about communication!.......2000-03-28
Helen Wilkie knows her stuff has a wonderful writing style that makes the facts fun to read and easy to remember. It's light hearted and the content is solid and factual.
New Must Have Desk Reference.......2000-03-28
When I finished reading Message Received and Understood I was thrilled to realize that I have finally found an up-to-date desk reference on business communication. Then I quickly realized that I will use many of the tools that I have learned from this book in every part of my life.
Ms. Wilkie writes with a very clear style and in a "to the point manner" that I appreciate very much. I know that I will be referring this book to many of my colleagues and clients.
Communicating explained in plain English.......2000-03-27
In an era where speed is prized, Helen Wilkie's Message Received and Undersood! provides answers quickly to the irks and quirks of business communication. Lively, filled with practical examples, it is a "must have" reference book for developing and finetuning your communication skills.
