Book Description
Available for the first time in a Yearling edition, the classic, inspiring story of a dog who triumphs against all odds, by the bestselling author of The Cay.
Helen adored her beautiful golden Labrador from the first moment he was placed in her arms, a squirming fat sausage of creamy yellow fur. As her best friend, Friar Tuck waited daily for Helen to come home from school and play. He guarded her through the long, scary hours of the dark night. Twice he even saved her life.
Now it's Helen's turn. No one can say exactly when Tuck began to go blind. Probably the light began to fail for him long before the alarming day when he raced after some cats and crashed through the screen door, apparently never seeing it. But from that day on, Tuck's trouble--and how to cope with it--becomes the focus of Helen's life. Together they fight the chain that holds him and threatens to break his spirit, until Helen comes up with a solution so new, so daring, there's no way it can fail.

Virginia 5th graders review The Trouble with Tuck.......2006-08-04
Our summer school class just finished reading this fun book. It is about a thirteen year old girl named Helen and her dog, Tuck. Helen and her family live in California in the 1950s. The trouble mentioned in the title is that Tuck, a Labrador Retriever, is losing his sight. Helen does not want to give Tuck away because he has saved her life twice! Even though he starts to act strange, Helen knows that there is a way to help him. Want to find out how? Read the book!
I would recommend this book to other kids. In the book, Tuck inspires Helen to have more confidence as she tries to save his life. This helps me to remember to never give up! This book reminds me of when my dog saved my cousin when she fell in the pool. A funny part in the book happened when Tuck went through the screen door. This book was a good combination of comedy and adventure with some tragedy mixed in to keep it interesting. In my opinion, Theodore Taylor wrote a great book but the ending was a little boring. I hope you read this memorable novel.
Great book at a great price!.......2006-03-10
My sister recommended this book to me, and, surprisingly, it's difficult to find in our local bookstore. Therefore, I was happy to see that it was available on Amazon.com. I love the story about the little girl and her dog, and, if you're an animal lover, this book is definitely a must-read for all ages!
'Tuck' shows no sign of imagination.......2005-08-27
Why do people write books so uninspired and idiotic such as this one? And why do they think kids will like them? "The Trouble With Tuck" tries to be heartwarming but never succeeds. There's a fork, but no meat.
The book is filled with gravity-defying life-saving stunts performed by the blind dog to save his dear Helen, which does absolutely nothing to the story but prove that it's a smart dog. There's another thing: the dog is BLIND. HELLO. Did the author do any research? Dogs have mediocre eyesight as it is. Going blind would not put them at a risk of death.
I read this is in the fifth grade for school. Yes, our teacher was that stoned.
The Trouble with Tuck by Theodore Taylor.......2005-02-28
In The Trouble with Tuck by Theodore Taylor, Tuck bursts through the screen door chasing after some cats. He apparently never saw the door this one hot day in August. This is the start of the story of how Helen and Tuck fight the struggles that tie Tuck down and threaten to break his courage, until Helen comes up with a plan. Although I have never been to California, Theodore Taylor makes me feel like I have.
Helen is one of the reasons I love this book. Even though she is shy and ugly, she would give up anything to help Tuck. I feel that there is a special bond between Helen and Tuck, which cannot be broken. Helen comes up with a plan that cannot go wrong in her mind.
Helen's brothers, Luke and Stan, make fun of Helen and say she whistles a lot. Then Tuck comes into Helen's life, and things begin to change. Tuck seems to help Helen overcome her shyness, and Helen stops whistling. Tuck saves Helen's life twice, and now it's Helen's turn to help Tuck.
Mr. Ishihara sells vegetables at Montclair Park and encourages Helen to follow through with her ideas. He gives Helen a brilliant idea that will change her life forever. Mr. Ishihara is another reason why I liked The Trouble with Tuck because he is encouraging and helpful.
The characters in The Trouble with Tuck remind me of people who live with you and me. Stan and Luke make fun of Helen, just like your family probably does too. Theodore makes the characters seem so real. When Helen whistled, someone in her family would shout, " `Will you stop it, Helen?' or `Helen, go whistle in you room!' ".
I like many things about The Trouble with Tuck. I like how the author makes the characters seem like people I know and how the events in this book are well described. I also like how the author, Theodore Taylor, makes Helen and Tuck have a special bond. I enjoy reading how Tuck and Helen are best friends.
Although I like many things about The Trouble with Tuck, I dislike a few things. I don't like how the author jumps from present day to past and back again. This isn't my style because I like stories that are in order. Although Helen comes up with the plot, I don't like how Mr. Ishihara helps her to solve the plot. I also don't like how Helen's grades are starting to slip because she's focusing more on Tuck than school. Even though I dislike some things in this story, it's still a good book.
Theodore Taylor also wrote The Cay, a book about a boy that goes blind. When I found out that Tuck went blind, I immediately thought Taylor writes all of his books about blind people or animals. This, however, is not true. I just happened to read two books by him that have blind people or animals. Taylor now lives in California, where this story takes place. Some of the events the author has gone through have affected the book.
The main part of The Trouble with Tuck is about blind dogs and how to help them. If you like to help dogs, this would be a good book for you because the main focus is on Tuck, a blind dog. That's why The Trouble with Tuck is such a good book.
This book was written in 1981, which wasn't that long ago. The story could still take place today. If you had a dog that went blind, you could do exactly what Helen did, but I'm not going to tell you what Helen did because you have to read the book.
I love this book and encourage anyone to read it. Helen loves her dog from the second she sees him, and now he goes blind. Helen comes up with a plan that she thinks cannot go wrong, but can it? That's up to you to figure out the plot.

Although I like many things about The Trouble with Tuck, I also dislike many things about the story. I don't like how the author refers back to events that have already happened. This isn't my syle, but I guess it's his. Although Helen comes up with the plan, I don't like how Mr. Ishihara helps her to solve it. Captures the essence of hunting, fishing, and life.......2007-05-22
This is a collection of magazine articles written by Gene Hill in the early 70s about fishing, hunting, the outdoors, and life. The stories are short (4 pages or so), and several (or even the entire book) can easily be read in one short sitting. The stories are about the sights and sounds and images and smells of hunting and fishing and the pleasures of being outdoors. In my opinion, Hill has captured the sentimental essence of the joys of outdoor life in these stories. I agree with Hill that there is something special about being outside after a new snowstorm, and he is right on about the machinations that one must occasionally go through to bring a new shotgun or fishing rod past the wife! As I read these stories, it made me recall old fishing trips (and even old long-forgotten gear!), walks through the woods, and dogs who were good friends. I only give this book four stars for two reasons. First, the price is rather steep for a thin (162 page) book (although it is a nice hardbound). Second, as good as these stories are, they still fall well short of those of the master of this genre (Robert Ruark - check out `The Old Man and the Boy'). A good read though.
Mostly Tailfeathers.......2002-09-21
This is the first Gene Hill book I have read. Although I enjoyed reading all of the hunting stories, Mr. Hill could have been writing about French poetry for all I care. His writing is that good. This book will have you laughing, thinking and probably hunting. I look forward to reading more Gene Hill.
Fond memories, sometimes even our own.......2001-12-14
Gene Hill was one of my favorite writers and one of the first I ever began to follow. Field and Stream isn't much without him. This is a beautiful book. One of my favorite stories is "Things Homemade." Mr. Hill writes, "The men of the house thought nothing of being able to put the set back in a bucksaw, deliver a reluctant calf, spokeshave a hickory limb into an ax handle, and all in the same afternoon." If you'd like to remember those times, even if you never saw them, get this book.
Mostly delightful.......2000-11-07
As the title indicates, stories of mostly birds and bird hunting in this book. As usual, Hill writes with a relaxed but concise style that makes the reading easy. I thoroughly enjoyed this one.
Best of the Outdoor Writers.......1999-04-19
Mr. Hill had an unusual talent for conveying emotions and grassroots feelings surrounding his beloved outdoor shooting sports. The way he felt about his dogs, friends, family, and the time spent afield literally jump from the pages in a way that all outdoorsmen will relate to on a nearly spiritual level. This man loved the out-of-doors gunning sports and those of us who love and live the same will forever be blessed for Mr. Hill's unique ability to bring our own feelings of the sport to life in his wonderful pages. "It was so cold that morning and I had on so many layers of clothing that the only way to get into the truck was to fall over like a log ..." Many passages in this collection of short stories assembled from a Sports Afield magazine series are humourous to the point of outloud laughter and other pieces will have the reader quietly closing the book while holding back a tear. Many outdoor shooting sports enthusiasts will probably not be able to put this book down until it is completely read.

Sometimes subtle, always funny.......2005-03-22
Cartoons are a combination of sight gag and brief caption that either emphasizes or contradicts the visual. The cartoons that appear in "The New Yorker" excel in both areas. Most in this collection are satirical in nature, poking good, clean fun at some of our most cherished institutions. To understand some of them, it is necessary to either understand current political or social events, but for most of them, no additional knowledge is required. For example, there is the cartoon of military men around a table with maps of the world and the speaker says, "Gentlemen, being a superpower is no longer enough. We must become a super-duper power." Funny enough by itself, but in the context of the nuclear arms race, the satire is hysterical.
My favorite is the one where two snakes, one larger than the other meet. The smaller says to the larger, "Not THE Monty Python." On occasion, you must know something about literature to make sense of the cartoon. For example, there is the king finding a nail on the floor and then further down the hall, there is a horseshoe. There is also one where two men named Wilhelm and Jacob are arguing about the plot details of a story about a child walking through the woods.
I really enjoyed this book, going through all the cartoons in one sitting. Sometimes I laughed, a few times I groaned, but in all cases I smiled.

The Code Book: The Science of Secrecy from Ancient Egypt to Quantum Cryptography
ASIN: 0130889768 |
Book Description
This book introduces a wide range of up-to-date cryptological concepts along with the mathematical ideas that are behind them. The new and old are organized around a historical framework. A variety of mathematical topics that are germane to cryptology (e.g., modular arithmetic, Boolean functions, complexity theory, etc.) are developed, but they do not overshadow the main focus of the book. Chapter topics cover origins, examples, and ideas in cryptology; classical cryptographic techniques; symmetric computer-based cryptology; public-key cryptography; and present practice, issues, and the future. For individuals seeking an up-close and accurate idea of how current-day cryptographic methods work.

Progressive Smooth Learning.......2006-12-23
It's written in such a manner that someone with no cryptology knowledge can pick up and follow the text, and continue through smooth progressive chapters. I have only two years of my EE degree done, but i think anyone who can do arithmetic and has an interest in cryptology can read this book like a novel and take a good portion of it all with only reading and excercising with your brain. I read it and did all the exercises as well absolutely independently. I feel i have a solid grasp of all its content.
Book Description
Labor Pains: The Corporate Campaign Against the Healthcare Industry chronicles recent attempts by organized labor to increase union membership in the rapidly growing healthcare industry. A "corporate campaign" is a sophisticated array of strategies and tactics with which economic, political and pshychological warfare is waged against companies from which unions seek concessions. The objective of corporate campaigns is tarnish the reputation of the target company and undermine key relationships with stakeholders such that management chooses to yield to labor's demands rather than risk further economic harm. Because there is a pool of $6 billion in potential union dues in the health care industry in terms of employees not currently union members, organized labor is pressuring health care employers to impose union membership on health care employees without giving those employees an opportunity to express their opinion on the question in a secret ballot election.
