Book Description

$19.95 gatefold paper * 1-58685-261-2 * March 8-1/2 x 10 in, 144 pp, 140 Color Photographs & Illustrations Rights: W, Design Hidden in idyllic isolation, the haciendas of Old Mexico strike powerful chords with their rich mix of myth, history, and impressive architecture. With the surge in popularity of hacienda restoration throughout Mexico, the time is ripe for the release of The New Hacienda in paperback. Travel behind the scenes with authors Karen Witynski and Joe P. Carr as they open the doors to Mexico's remote country estates and reveal innovative interiors, artifacts, and antiques that echo the hacienda's original architectural splendor. The New Hacienda looks at the ways in which designers and architects have integrated the visual culture of the hacienda and blended Mexican elements in new homes on both sides of the border. From ancient stone walls and arcaded portals to cobbled courtyards and grand salons, hacienda style comes alive with a spirited mix of once-forgotten objects and contemporary furniture.

5 out of 5 stars An eye-opening source book of interior design.......2003-07-26

The collaborative effort of Karen Witynski and Joe P. Carr (joint owners of Texture Antiques, an Austin, Texas-based interior design firm and gallery specializing in hacienda style, Mexican colonial furniture and architectural elements), The New Hacienda is an eye-opening source book of interior design showcasing ideas drawn from Mexico's remote country estates. Full-color photography and raptly descriptive text combine to present the flavor and history of homes on both sides of the border. An impression-forming and memorable showcase spotlighting deep brown and yellow colors, and artifacts of Mexican culture. Also very highly recommended is the Karen Witynski and Joe P. Carr collaboration, Mexican Country Style

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring Book.......2002-06-13

The New Hacienda is a beautiful and inspiring book for anyone who loves Mexico's art, design, and hacienda-style culture. From traditional architectural elements to colonial antiques, the book reveals many rich details for those seeking ideas and inspiration in creating a hacienda-style home of their own. I found the book's Resource section especially helpful for contacting design sources here in the states. Also, after writing the authors at their site I found out that they have restored a colonial hacienda in the Yucatan which is now available as a vacation rental and Mexican Design Center.

5 out of 5 stars Book Review--New Mexico Magazine.......2002-06-09

"Mexican Country Style" and "The New Hacienda"
Both of these books are helpful in understanding the reinterpretation of Mexico's indigenous styles and architecture, in the latter case, particularly the transformations that haciendas surviving the land reforms have undergone in recent years...In "The New Hacienda", colonial antiques and historic objects are shown intermingled with contemporary notions of art and comfort, rendering a visually pleasing balance between old and new. Also included is a guide to Mexican haciendas, which may be visited...Both of these books will thrill anyone with an interest in interior design.

5 out of 5 stars The New Hacienda--Latin Style Magazine; 9/01.......2002-06-09

The New Hacienda garnered the prestigious La Pluma de Plata (Silver Pen) Award from Mexico's Ministry of Tourism. Presented to authors Witynski and Carr by Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo, the award is a testament to the book's distinctive celebration of Mexico's restored haciendas.

1 out of 5 stars To much use of other people's photos and information.......2001-08-02

This book has lots of beautiful pictures but hardly enough of true haciendas. It is lacking originality and exterior/interior photos of the haciendas themselves. Text content is "ok" but repetitive and sounds like that from other books. Very overpriced for what it presents. The authors mention that they are building their own "new" hacienda. If they have such a true love for the old ones why didn't they rescue one from ruin??? Very commercial in my opinion.

      Book Description

What the plantation has been to the history and literature of the American South, the hacienda has been to Mexico and the American Southwest. In Remembering the Hacienda, Vincent Pérez makes the case that the hacienda offers the emblem of an "antebellum," agrarian social order that predates the United States.

It is the site in which the Mexican American community's "heroic," genteel forebears lived in dignity and pride, and it is the heritage from which they were cast out as "orphans," both in mother Mexico by the Revolution and in the American Southwest when the wars of 1836 and 1846-48 and capitalist land grabs dispossessed the Mexican hacendados. The hacienda, Pérez argues, had its own orphans, too: Indians, mestizos, women, and peons.

To trace the importance of the hacienda and its heroes and orphans in Mexican American culture, Pérez examines five novels and autobiographies: Jovita González and Eve Raleigh's Caballero: A Historical Novel (written in the 1930s and 1940s and later published by Texas A&M University Press), María Maparo Ruiz de Burton's The Squatter and the Don (1885), Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo's Historical and Personal Memoirs Relating to Alta, California (1874), Leo Carrillo's The California I Love (1961), and Francisco Róbles Pérez's immigrant autobiography "Memorias." The last work is Pérez's own grandfather's life narrative.

          Book Description

This work is an ethnohistorical investigation of the social and economic structure of the vast estates granted to the Cortés family in southern Mexico. Lolita Gutiérrez Brockington deals with landholding patterns, agricultural production, and the social organization and use of native Indian and African slave labor on these estates, thereby shedding a great deal of light on this little-known early colonial period.

I am by far not an avid comic book collector, but I have to say I absolutely love Usagi Yojimbo. Stan Sakai keeps the Japanese history and culture vibrant and true to form through our wandering Rabbit Bodyguard! The artwork, inking, lettering are beautiful and expressive and the stories themselves are interesting, exciting, and keeps you wanting more. I highly recommend this series for anyone who loves reading.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best, but still not bad........2003-03-11

I wouldn't say that this is Stan Sakai's best Usagi book, but it is still head and shoulders above just about any other comic.

Though it is titled "Lone Goat and Kid" (a nice reference to that classic samurai manga "Lone Wolf and Cub"), they don't appear "on-screen" until the last story. The most of the stories are stand-alones, which is unusual in UY comics. The stories that revolve around the kite festival are quite enjoyable. Sakai is very interesting even when his main characters don't appear in a chapter because he is explaining something technical like how kites are made or how swords are fashioned (see UY 9 "Daisho").

The "Blood-Wings" story is interesting, but the Komori Ninja have never been as compelling to me as the Neko Ninja. (Though they aren't as bad as the Mogura Ninja.)

"Lone Goat and Kid" is something of a let down when you get there, if one is familiar with Lone Wolf and Cub. If not, then it's a nice, average Usagi tale in a book that is full of them.

Do NOT attempt to buy this book used. It can only be used once, due to a login code that comes with the book. As much as this book and the game it describes are worthless, if you are required to have this book, just pay your fee and try as hard as you can to convince your professor that this game is a waste of time. There are much better ways to learn how to run a company and to find the maximum point of a profit curve.

This book, and software, was written by a professor at the University of South Carolina. He first introduced it in the 1980's. He has been cashing in on it ever since by attempting to update it every few years. He requires all of his students to buy it, and use it. It is poorly written, in need of clearer explanations, and in my opinion is nothing more than a rehashed introductory accounting textbook. What a ripoff! If you want to learn corporate finance don't buy this book. I'm watching you Leroy.

The 100 Most Difficult Business Letters You'll Ever Have to Write, Fax, or E-Mail could well be the most useful book you'll ever own. It is not a book that gives forms for business letters or even suggests wording for particular situations -- there are numerous books that perform those services. Rather, this is a book on a subject that has never been addressed before: how to use your correspondence to solve problems -- that is, to cope with and resolve the problems and crises that arise so distressingly often in business.

When there is a tension-driven need to compose a letter about a problem that puts your reputation, your money, or your entire future on the line, Bernard Heller tells you the best strategy to employ, and the actual words and phraseology you need to overcome the problem, to come out ahead.

The 100 Most Difficult Business Letters You'll Ever Have to Write, Fax, or E-Mail is the only guide to business correspondence you will ever need.

After reading The 100 Most Difficult Business Letters, You'll Ever Have to Write, Fax, or E-Mail, you will be able to:

I refer to this book all the time. The author has obviously had much experience working in the corporate world. The situations are quite common and the letter-writing style is terrific. In each case, the issue is handled in a well-organized and non-threatening manner. I have used many of the letters almost verbatim, and I have always gotten the response that I want.

One would have to be smoking crack to think any of these letters would be appropriate or helpful in the situations described - not to mention the ludicrous reasoning behind the letters in the first place. I have to say a few of them had be on the floor in fits of laughter. I began to wonder if this is really a humor book.

                              Book Description

Drawing upon a case study of a plant closing in Wisconsin and the results of national labor force surveys showing the displacement of millions of workers each year, this book examines the consequences of the rise in economic instability. Among those consequences are a productivity slowdown, increased disparities in earnings and income, and higher average unemployment. Moore assesses the extent of job loss nationwide, its costs to the individuals directly affected, and the way in which the incidence of displacement and earnings loss has shifted over the past decade, affecting groups long sheltered from labor market turbulence.

To reverse these trends, the book argues, an employment and training system that will give employers an incentive to invest in the skills of their employees is needed. Federally funded training programs have not improved the earnings ability of displaced and disadvantaged workers, and state-sponsored programs tend to exclude those most in need of assistance. Moore suggests direct employer investment in the general skills of employees as a remedy to both failings.
