Book Description

"A happy and unexpected coordination of images, linguistic and photographic." -- Jay Parini

Inspired by the writings of Robert Frost and his view of man and the natural world, professional photographers Betsy and Tom Melvin present beautiful, and sometimes poignant, scenes of the New England landscape in some of its many moods and seasons.

Each full-page color photograph is accompanied by a poem, verse, or phrase from Frost which, though often familiar, may provoke us to savor the New England environment anew. The imaginative pairing of photographs and text also conjures up some of the same ambiguity, profundity, and freshness continually offered in Frost's poems.

2 out of 5 stars Not what i expected.......2007-05-22

Not alot of reading goes into this book. Alot of beautiful pictures with what seem like exerpts from his poetry. Didnt love it. But I do like it.

4 out of 5 stars nice idea.......2001-09-26

This book elegantly pairs Frost's poems with corresponding photos. Often the poems accompany a two page photo spread. The photography is good, although the image quality on paper isn't fabulous. It's nice to read his poems and have images of New England bring them to life.

Late in life, the American novelist and conservationist Wallace Stegner left California, where he had lived for half a century, to move to Vermont. The reason, he said, was simple: there is more wilderness to be found in the pine forests of western New England than in the Far West. John Elder supports Stegner's claim, writing in Reading the Mountains of Home that the abandoned farmsteads of so many of Robert Frost's Vermont poems have now reverted to wild lands, dense with fallen logs and snags, full of bird and animal life.

A longtime resident of the state, Elder uses Frost's great but little-known poem "Directive" as a touchstone by which to guide his discussion of how modern humans can truly inhabit a landscape--in this case, a landscape that had been developed for generations and then all but forgotten. In such places, Elder writes, the issue is not one of wilderness versus civilization, that old trope, but the wildness that endures at the edges of settled places, wildness that is accessible to people all around the world. His celebration of returning greenness, of the forest's seasons, and of his own life in the woods makes for engaging reading indeed. --Gregory McNamee

    Book Description

Small farms once occupied the heights that John Elder calls home, but now only a few cellar holes and tumbled stone walls remain among the dense stands of maple, beech, and hemlocks on these Vermont hills. Reading the Mountains of Homeis a journey into these verdant reaches where in the last century humans tried their hand and where bear and moose now find shelter. As John Elder is our guide, so Robert Frost is Elder's companion, his great poem "Directive" seeing us through a landscape in which nature and literature, loss and recovery, are inextricably joined.

Over the course of a year, Elder takes us on his hikes through the forested uplands between South Mountain and North Mountain, reflecting on the forces of nature, from the descent of the glaciers to the rush of the New Haven River, that shaped a plateau for his village of Bristol; and on the human will that denuded and farmed and abandoned the mountains so many years ago. His forays wind through the flinty relics of nineteenth-century homesteads and Abenaki settlements, leading to meditations on both human failure and the possibility for deeper communion with the land and others.

An exploration of the body and soul of a place, an interpretive map of its natural and literary life, Reading the Mountains of Home strikes a moving balance between the pressures of civilization and the attraction of wilderness. It is a beautiful work of nature writing in which human nature finds its place, where the reader is invited to follow the last line of Frost's "Directive," to "Drink and be whole again beyond confusion."

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hope for Co-existence.......2002-09-27

This is an unusual book. John Elder has written a book that blends the rhythms of life with the rhythms of nature.

Using Robert Frost's poem "Directive" as a springboard, Elder guides the reader through a series of year-long hikes that provide a rare glimpse into the writer soul, family and surroundings. His musings transport the reader from the glaciers that shaped his the plateau for the Village of Bristol, VT., the farmers who struggled and more often than not, failed to scratch a living from the rocky soil that surrounds his adopted home.

He carries us from broken china to Abenaki settlements, meditating on family relationships and deeper relationships with the land.

This is a beautiful example of nature writing, a work that draws a balance between the machinations of civilization and the beauties of wilderness. By inviting the reader to follow the last line of Frost's "Directive," to "Drink and be whole again beyond confusion.", Elder creates a sense of hope that Vermont's balance between nature and culture can speak to the rest of the nation.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding book.......1998-10-31

I have read many of the reviews of Reading the Mountains of Home--both before and after I studied the book itself--in various magazines and newspapers, and, while many of them summarize accurately and manage to convey fairly clearly its complex and compelling structures, the musical grace of the sentences, the unique of John Elder's vision about the interlinking of language and place and time and family, of Robert Frost's "Directive" and of the concept of wilderness in America. There is a sense also in which he has taken nature writing--a broad genre forever in evolution--and brought it to new heights through this creative interweaving.

But what I notice most is the book's quiet heroism. By this I mean simply that the author exhibits the courage to put all of his deepest convictions, his most strongly held beliefs, the raw stuff of his very life in a place for all to see. One does not see this very often in books. We need more writers like John Elder. We need people like John Elder, people who have the courage to write from the deepest parts of themselves for the greater good of all of us and the larger home we call earth. If there were six stars I would give it six stars.

5 out of 5 stars Smart and moving and insightful........1998-07-25

While this book still has value, it is a crime that it is still being sold given that video technology has expanded so rapidly...no doubt, no one can keep up, but while this is an exceptional book for 94 through say, 98...it is way behind now...
you'd be far better off buying a more uptodate manual and hopefully someone will update this one...avoid paying anything for this other than at a garage sale...

The content is great. However, the binding is easily the worst I have ever seen in a professionally produced book. The ENTIRE book came apart upon its first reading! Don't expect to pass this down to your grandkids.

                  3 out of 5 stars pretty good.......2001-10-04

I have a mixed review for this one. The content is top notch and i definitely enjoyed it. However, when I started to read it it started coming apart at the binding. I did not put the book under any undue stress, just normal, gentle reading and it fell apart. This of course upset me and has made me very hesitant to purchase the others in the series.

                  5 out of 5 stars It's not pornography!.......2000-01-04

I really enjoyed the latest edition of Blab. Each one gets better and better. The art is stimulating and intriguing. My wife calls it pornography, but I call it pure art.

A cross section of the artwork of Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez, The content of Love and Rockets sketchbook vol.1 ranges from experimental to more polished commercial work. Images of popular characters in early incarnations (Penny century circa 1979 as "Blondee") as well as beautiful Id revealing sketches make this required reading for Love and Rockets fans. The sketchbook doesn't feel like a vanity publication because both Gilbert and Jaime are not afraid to reveal embarassing Highschool work as well as images rejected by their publisher.

This is a very good introductory book for beginners from a finance and accounting perspective.

3 out of 5 stars Unhelpful textbook for accelerated courses.......2005-11-24

I experienced the textbook and Self-Study CD, with no other study guide.

I used this textbook with an online course (compressing 16 weeks into 8) and it was the most unhelpful textbook I have ever encountered! Perhaps with more time it would be clearer, but my fellow online students agreed that this was a difficult text to work with in a short time. A basic Accounting course should be a prerequisite, although that does not ensure success. The book assumes you have taken it. I hadn't but struggled along anyway - I highly recommend Wikipedia.com as a study aid.

This textbook does not give clear definitions. If you enjoy reverse-engineering, this will not bother you. New concepts are presented in a convoluted manner, not This = That, but a whole paragraph on This without saying what it actually means, along with a series of (finished, not step-by-step) examples. You are meant to "get it" in context.

Tip: know your terminology and several synonyms. Study questions and tests often use different words and phrases for concepts in the chapter than what they were initially named or stated as.

The CD provides a quick-reference glossary (equivalent to the back of the book), chapter summaries, practice tests, and handy Excel worksheets for many of the chapter problems. The tests were good, but remember the Tip.

Another Tip: a squishy Stress Ball or Ergobeads product is a wise investment for frustration management (if you don't take to this subject like a duck to water).

                      Book Description

What has happened to the magic of learning? Playful illusions, spellbinding games, and lifelike automata were once integral to education. Artful Science reveals the exhilarating but paradoxical intertwining of enchantment with enlightenment in the early modern period. A cross-disciplinary guide to intellectual high and low life of the eighteenth century, Artful Science makes the case for the pedagogical opportunities inherent in an oral-visual culture. Barbara Stafford draws on an extraordinary range of historical sources and popular imagery, exploring from a new perspective the perceptual cognition that she so deftly analyzed in Body Criticism. Her important reinterpretation also casts many well-studied paintings as instances of an instructive art of demonstration.

Artful Science opens by describing the evolution of mathematical recreations and their relationship to the middle class's increasing leisure time. Subsequent chapters focus on the problem of distinguishing legitimate science from virtuoso fraud; the public performance of experiments; and early attempts to create informative and attractive natural history exhibits. Throughout, Stafford emphasizes the concern for telling truth from fiction in a world of alluring technology. The enlighteners' relentless association of sensory evidence with deception led to the submergence of a "tricking" oral-visual culture by "serious" mass literacy drives, Stafford observes. Yet sophisticated teaching techniques and ingenious learning machines made abstractions concrete and appealing to ever-widening eighteenth-century audiences. With the modern computer graphics revolution always in view, Artful Science suggests fresh means for putting intelligence, enjoyment, and communicative power back into thinking with images.
