Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is THE premium book on color.......2007-02-11

As an artist who uses color in my work, this book has been invaluable. The color wheel has always been my primary reference for color combinations; however, since reading Johannes Itten book, an entirely new world of understanding and enlightenment has evolved. I love this book for how it has enriched my knowledge and passion for color.

4 out of 5 stars The Art of Color: The Subjective Experience and Objective Rationale of Color.......2007-01-19

A little expensive, but well laid out and designed. On quality paper. Thoroughly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Eye-opener on harmony of colours.......2006-06-27

This book of Johannes Itten is a good example of the use of colour in the antroposofic way. He connects the different colours with moods and feelings, religious symbols and even gives it a spiritual dimension. For me it was an eye-opener on the aspect of harmony. Itten emphasizes that the eye and mind are always looking for balance, harmony in the sense of a grey-tone. If a work of art does not reflect this kind of harmony, for instance because of a distonality in the use of colours, the eye and mind get restless and agitated. But if used on purpose this aspect of colour gives a work of art a very strong impact and makes it a masterpiece.[...].

5 out of 5 stars amazing!.......2002-02-20

This book might be expensive, but what do you expect for such genius. I love this book, and would recommend it to anyone into color theroy. Itten is a color genius, and this book proves it.

5 out of 5 stars Itten is a true master.......2001-08-14

I'd studied physiology and neuroscience, later switching careers from a medical path to that of a designer. I've dived into many sources for my self-education/training. Itten is the grand-master of color; no other book I've read compares to those of Itten. His teachings have enlightened me in ways that I'm amazed by, touching on scientific, psychological, behavioral, and the most personal aspects of color as a study and an experience. It's changed the way I look at my environment, and it's changing the way I use color in my work as a designer.

I'm so impressed with the value this book has had to me, that I bought Itten's book on Form and Design, even though I didn't necessarily feel lacking on those aspects of design. It's rather because of the likelihood in the quality and richenss of knowledge I'll gain, as I did from this book.

The book could be more cool if the price was low. I think about $50.00 dollars New. How about that. I'm not kidding. I want the book so bad.

5 out of 5 stars A terrific follow-up to one of the greatest movies ever!.......2001-06-14

If you were as curious as I was to how Tron achieved such a beautiful look, this book will clear it all up. It goes behind the scenes of the pre-production and post of Tron. There are amazing chapters that tell every detail of the painstaking tasks that were done in order to make the movie what it is. Awesome pictures surround the full-color book making it great for disscussion. Fully recommended.

Give a cheer: another pompous blockbuster is knocked down to size and turned into a source of unstoppable laughter. Hot on the heels of Bored of the Rings comes an indispensable parody of the most humorless big screen epics of all time: The Matrix and its completely confused sequels. In spite of featuring a lead actor who can barely speak, and quotations from philosophers most of its audience hadn’t read, the movies spawned an immense following. Now the entire trilogy has been transformed into comedy. You’ll recognize the pretentious themes—twisted realities, paranoia, and godhead—and the distinctive imagery: dark glasses, impractical long coats, slow-motion bullets that are deadly in more ways than one, and strange robot thingamajigs. They’ll all come in for ribbing.

Don't let the hair band photos fool you. There are enough good stories and pieces of sound advice in "Rock Star 101" to enlighten any type of musician. Author Marc Ferrari was the guitarist for such rock acts as Keel, Cold Sweat and Medicine Wheel. Major label deals, music videos, world tours, major motion pictures ... he's done it all, and he's not afraid to share the lessons he's learned from his experiences.

Ferrari is a friendly and accessible writer who does a good job of explaining how his passion for music drove him from his parents' garage to the stage at Madison Square Garden. Along with his personal stories, Ferrari mixes in plenty of usable advice. Here are a couple of notable nuggets from the book:

                                            - Own your logo and artwork. If you hire a graphic artist, make sure it's on a "work-for-hire" basis, with an agreement that you can use the art as much as you want without any further payments to the artist. Ferrari also recommends that a recording contract state that the band owns its logo. Otherwise, you may have to pay a fee to license your own logo from the label.

                                            - While publishing royalties and other revenues may be slanted more toward the songwriters in a band, Ferrari believes income from merchandise sold at live shows should be split evenly. "As long as all band members are on the road together for the same tour, there's no reason why monies related to touring shouldn't be split equally," he writes.

There are points in the book about which I disagree. For instance, Ferrari recommends giving your demo to everyone you can in hopes that some day it'll get into the hands of that one person who can launch your career. There's some merit to this idea (exposing your music to lots of people is a good thing), but it leaves your success or failure up to someone else -- someone who you may never even stumble upon.

I believe musicians should assume more control over their careers. You shouldn't spend your time and energy seeking out one person who will lead you to the Promised Land. Instead, you should invest your resources into creating great music and building relationships with a growing number of fans who support you.

"Rock Star 101" also offers tips for living on the road, how to assemble a business team, the ins and outs of publishing, endorsements, money management and more. All in all, a pretty good read.

Rock Star 101 should be required reading for any aspiring musician seeking a professional career in the music industry. Mr. Ferrari's approach is warm and enlightening. Unlike many books that are couched with cynicism, condescension or scare- tactics, this book illustrates, in simplistic fashion, basic entrepeneurial tactics that musicians should employ. It is the perfect "first book" for musicians to read.

5 out of 5 stars Want to make it in the music biz? You need this book!.......2002-08-05

Any struggling musician that's serious about succeeding in today's music industry would be doing themselves a big fat favor by reading Ferrari's latest book, Rock Star 101! Once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. As a bassist who's played in several bands with Marc, it's incredibly interesting to see the world of music through his eyes and perspective. After being a musician for more years than I'd like to admit, I even learned quite a bit from reading his book, as it's virtually impossible not to learn from another musician's point of view anyway. But especially from a guy whom is as seasoned and well respected as Marc is. The ingredients to his success are quite simple; the first is talent; the second is dedication, perseverance and hard work. Period! You'll see that if you believe in yourself and work hard, you stand just as good a chance as any to make it in music!

Marc has done what no other has done before him. He's written a book for the rocker, by the rocker. Finally, a book has been written about what today's musician needs to know in order to succeed in today's music business. This book will surely benefit any musician, no matter what style of music, or what instrument you play. Marc shows you the ins and outs, the ups and downs and the dos and don'ts about working in a band that will surely benefit any rocker who's just starting out, or is well on their way to success as a musician in a rock band. Marc leaves no stone unturned regarding how to conduct yourself in the music business and he writes from his personal experience. For example, early in his career, he was playing in a Lawrence, Massachusetts based rock band and drove an old, beat-up 68 Chevy Malibu that was so completely covered with snow one winter, that it wasn't until spring when the snow started to melt that we realized the city snow-plows had pushed the snow-buried car 20 yards down the street! The only reason he wasn't driving the car that winter, is that we were too broke to afford the 50-dollar carburetor to make it run! In other words, the author, who begins his career from humble origins, flat out leads the musician to success, while conducting himself respectfully, and in a business-like manner, while still retaining the image of a wild and far-out rocker, bent on making it in the music business! No one ever said that you don't have to be smart to be a rock & roller! Marc proves that you don't have to be a square either, in order to conduct yourself in a businesslike and professional manner along the way. You'll see that it's always business before pleasure in Ferrari's world. But once the business is finished, it's time to enjoy yourself and reap in your hard earned rewards, the way only a real rocker knows how! You'll learn about what to look for, what will benefit you and your band, what can help you, harm you, or what can even kill you! You learn from his experience and see the music business and rock & roll lifestyle through his eyes. He knows...he's been there!
One good example and sure fire way to end a talented musician's career is through drug-abuse and crazy women! Marc neither condemns, nor does he preach about the stereotypical "rock & roll lifestyle", however, he does make his point, but lets you, the reader and musician arrive at your own conclusions and decide what's best for you!

The two words music and business are far separated in any typical rocker's world. But the author intelligently and cleverly shows the musician how to separate the music from the business of music, while still combining the two logically into a perspective that you will easily understand. Marc shows you how to survive the rock & roll gauntlet and onto success without loosing your mind in the process. The book provides excellent and practical advise that's absolutely essential for success in today's ever-changing and fickle music industry, where the changes of musical styles and trends seem to have no end in sight. But if you truly believe in yourself and persevere, you stand a good chance to succeed! Marc lets you in on the secrets of the music trade and will prove that if you follow the guidelines that are outlined in his book, there's no way you can fail! He proves without a doubt that some of the smallest and most trivial things that are usually overlooked by most people, can make huge impressions on the folks that you're counting on the most to help you along in achieving ultimate success and the fulfillment of your lifelong dream of being a successful musician!

If you take this book to heart, you will without a doubt succeed as a professional musician. Even if you're not looking to get a record deal, this book will still help you to succeed in anything music, and by also giving you that upper edge that your friend's band hasn't got! However, if you are seriously intent on that elusive recording contract, again, if you follow the path Ferrari sets out for you in this book, you'll without a doubt achieve your goals. So if your serious about succeeding in today's music world, get this book! To not own it would be a talented musician's first mistake!

The period between the World Wars—the era of sexual liberation, Prohibition, the rise of organized crime, and the Great Depression—was also the classic era of American pulp magazines, the subject of this fascinating volume. Pulps, with their lurid color covers depicting the thrills of sex and violence, and with stories to match inside, fuelled America’s dreams—and nightmares. For a few cents they offered everything young men wanted: sex, action, adventure. But they also fostered the talents of some of the greatest popular writers of the century—Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Raymond Chandler, James M. Cain, and Dashiell Hammett, among others—and virtually invented the genres of science fiction and hard-boiled crime. From the cheap thrills of the “hot” and “spicy” pulps and the sexual sadism of the “shudder” pulps to the weird worlds of the fantasy, sci-fi, and horror pulps, this book displays their art and tells their history, capturing the original magazines in all their sleazy, sensational glory.

This book is well worth the price. It is full of color covers of pulp magazines from the 1930s through the 1950s. I've owned it for many years, and I still love browsing through it. If you don't already know about Bud Plant, then also check out his site. You'll go broke ordering from it. What a wonderful collection!

5 out of 5 stars What the glory years of pulp magazines had to offer.......2001-06-07

The colorfully covered, cheaply printed pulp magazine of the 1920s and 30s great out of the 19th-century dime novel and served as the forerunner of the comic books and paperback novels of today. In its heyday, pulp magazines were a staple of popular culture that offered every genre of readership the thrills, adventures, and entertainments they craved -- often to the dismay of parents, teachers, and clergy! Virtually creating the now popular literary genres as science fiction and the hard-boiled private eye mystery, these magazines were the incubators of such American literary talents as Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Raymond Chandler, James M. Cain, Dashiell Hammett, and a legion of others. An outstanding recommendation for personal, academic, and community library collections, The Classic Era Of American Pulp Magazines tells the complete story of these colorful pulps and those that wrote and published them, with a wealth of colorful cover art giving today's readers an accurate sense and taste of what the glory years of pulp magazines had to offer their enthusiastic readers.

Peter Haining has published a huge number of volumes on a variety of topics, which tend to be both well illustrated and very carelessly researched. This latest addition to the stack unfortunately follows that pattern.

First the good stuff: the book offers a large number of well-reproduced covers from a wide variety of pulps. The images are photographs (two are out of focus slightly), and so do not have the problems seen in several similar recent books which had electronically-scanned covers displaying a color palette nothing whatsoever like the actual covers.

Now for the bad part. The text is mainly just a description of particular magazines which happen to be in the author's personal collection. Where the text departs from what is really just a catalog of the collection, to provide background on publishers, specific titles and authors, the material is so riddled with errors as to be of very limited use and reliability. So much of the text is clueless, every reader will have his favorite (and different) gaffe. Mine is the reference (p. 203) to "famous American space artist Chester Bonestall." He's apparently not as famous as I thought!

To summarize the contents: Chapter 1 provides a confused account of the origins and types of pulp magazines. Chapter 2 is devoted to the very-soft-porn pulps usually sold from under the tobacco shop counter. Chapter 3 deals with detective, crime and gangster pulps. Chapter 4 covers the "spicy" pulps and their imitators. Chapter 5 introduces the weird fantasy pulps, of which the best and best known were WEIRD and UNKNOWN. Chapter 6 surveys the "shudder" pulps which featured heavy doses of sadism and torture. Chapter 7 fairly casually dips into the huge sea of science-fiction pulps. Finally, chapter 8 shows us a little bit of the little-known world of British pulps and pulp publishing. (About half the space actually is devoted to paperbacks rather than pulps.) Notable complete omissions from the book are the most popular pulp genre, westerns (perhaps half of all pulp titles at peak), and the justice-figure pulps such as THE SHADOW, DOC SAVAGE and the SPIDER, which are the best remembered pulps today. Also largely ignored are the general fiction titles, such as BLUE BOOK, ARGOSY and ADVENTURE. With such omissions, the present book cannot be considered very valuable even as a pictoral survey of the pulp era.

Buy it for the cover reproductions and you won't be too disappointed. But if you try to read the text, you're in for dismay and frustration.

                                            5 out of 5 stars Eye Candy.......2001-05-08

Obviously the politically incorrect covers are the first attraction. You can't ignore the cultural significance of the covers and thus, if you are a teacher of semiotics or visual interpretation, I can't think of a richer source. Congrats to the publishers for printing such a glorious book. For those more interested in what's between the covers, Haining gives insightful critical analysis of the different genres. A great gift for anyone; a wonderful coffee table book for yourself. It's worth every penny.

                                                Book Description

Women's Employment and the Capitalist Family responds to the growing recognition of the economic, social, and electoral importance of women. This original study draws upon an interdisciplinary approach which fully incorporates both empirical and historical material.

Ben Fine provides a critical assessment of the literature which examines the changing labor market participation of women. He explores such issues as the domestic labor debate, the role of patriarchy theory, gender and labor market theory, the capitalist family, and the position of working women in the economy. He uses demographic and historical factors such as the movement towards mass consumption through factory production to explain the timing of women's increasing dependence on waged work. Although economic issues are the main focus of the book, it also considers non-economic contributing factors, making full use of historical and empirical material.

Women's Employment and the Capitalist Family is written from a marxist-feminist perspective, and argues convincingly that this approach offers a greater challenge to the orthodoxies within economics and sociology which have as yet been untouched by postmodern theories. Despite its theoretical focus, the book avoids technicalities and will be accessible to a wide, interdisciplinary audience.
